Mike Leach is Making Friends Everywhere These Days
College Football, NFL April 28th. 2009, 1:45pm
A day after blasting Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach took a jab at the Texas A&M coaching staff after Aggies QB Stephen McGee was selected by the Cowboys: “I’m happy for Stephen McGee. The Dallas Cowboys like him more than his coaches at A&M did.” Could Leach have just been pissed that his QB, Heisman contender Graham Harrell, didn’t get drafted?
Oh, the irony: Harrell signed a free agent deal with the Browns and will take part in minicamp this weekend. He’ll have a difficult time making the team, though; nobody has roster room for four QBs, and it seems like the Browns have perished the idea of trading Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson. Cleveland’s No. 3 QB, Brett Ratliff, was part of the Mark Sanchez deal, but Peter King claims Mangini really likes him.

I think Anderson is gone once the Browns eat his $5 mill bonus. Would like to see an open competition but I doubt it happens.
The next meaningful bowl game that Leach wins will be his first.

Leach is kind of a little bitch.
April 28th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Is that a jab at the aTm coaching staff or the Cowboys? When I read it I thought he was jabbing the Cowboys, especially since he goes on to say, “The truth of the matter is that the NFL drafts quarterbacks notoriously bad,” said Leach, according to the Morning News. “That’s indisputable….”
April 28th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
seems like a Cowboys jab to me as well…
April 28th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
I hope Harrell doesn’t make the Browns, then the Vikings can snap him up
April 28th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
His point is that Harrell is a much better QB than McGee and the Cowboys were stupid to draft Mcgee over Harrell.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
His point is retarded if you have ever seen both of them play. He is sticking up for his guy but there is good reason that 250 some odd times teams passed up on Harrell.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
For all of Leach’s mad genius, he still can’t produce a solid winner. It’s a gimmicky offense that defenses can shut down… He probably needs to keep his pie hole shut and win more games (including A bowl game).

Could Leach have just been pissed that his QB, Heisman contender Graham Harrell, didn’t get drafted?
Hell, yeah he’s pissed. He just signs a contract extension after his best year coaching and his Top 5 guy slid to 10 and his all world QB didn’t get drafted. Every coach in the league will use that against him during recruiting.
Now, whether he is correct or not doesn’t matter. It is Mike Leach, he’s bound to say shit just to stir the pot.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
i like it.
fuck the browns

Stick up for your players – Good Coach.
Trash other players – Dumb Coach.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Great point. Completely overlooked that.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
a guy who wasn’t a Top 5 QB in the Big 12 (top 7?) was drafted ahead of his QB who put up monster #’s.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
Those monster numbers are a product of the system. Just check out Cory Hodges Sr. season at TT
April 28th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Kliff Kingsbury was great in the NFL…
April 28th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
who was the last big 12 QB to start for an entire season in the NFL? Vince Young? Big 12 sucks as a whole.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
longest winning streak this month for me on Streak for Cash – 6
good record (37-22-7)
really would like to make a late push and get in the high teens. only three days left in the month will make it tough …
April 28th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
There are 0 starting NFL QBs from the B12. Cant help Bradfords stock.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
McGee played in a pro system. That gimmicky offense Tech runs doesn’t teach you how to be a QB. Its a one read system, you key on one defender and depending on how he reacts at the snap it dictates your throw. There’s no progressing through reads or scanning the field, you look one way and throw it on one read. That weak shit doesn’t work at the next level.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
His point was this: McGee wasn’t the start for much of the back half of the season. The rumors were that he was benched by the coaches (hence they didn’t like him), while most reports openly admit it was due to injury.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
really? coach fran ran some gay option shit his first two years there. and he only played half a season before getting hurt in sherman’s system.
the rest? agreed.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
McGee is going to make a tremendous AFL2 QB. Assuming that league is still around.

Mike Leach’s offense is kind of a weird cousin of the Run N’ Shoot (anyone who uses Run N’ Shoot, the spread, and whatever Mike Leach calls his offense as interchangeable terms is an idiot). The Oilers used the Run N’ Shoot with Warren Moon to nearly make the Super Bowl twice in the early 90s.
Then that fateful day in Buffalo happened when they blew a 35-3 lead to the Bills. I still have nightmares over that.
I guess I’m not really disagreeing with your statement about Leach’s offense being gimmicky, but I don’t think McGee would be the best demonstration of any sort of “pro-style” offense.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
what do the previous B12 qbs have to do with bradford?
April 28th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
espnnews is gonna broadcast that hs pitchers game. i think hes going for 5 consecutive no hitters
April 28th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
ms621, I dont claim to have ever watched Tex A&M play, they haven’t been relevant in a long time, I’m just going by what his draft profile said.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
they suffered from the same stigma…that playing against conference-wide matador D’s on a loaded offense doesn’t exactly prepare you for NFL greatness where defenses actally are capable and, you know, TRY.
personally, i think bradford will be good as long as he goes to a smaller market.

An all-offense league has no starting NFL QB’s. The definition of frauds.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
They are the Titans now. Which means I don’t give a rat’s ass about them. Bud Adams took the team and records with him to Tennessee so its like they never existed in Houston. fuck them.

@ms261- you got us back with the Music City forward lateral

Not me. I was there. My nightmares have something to do with a certain kick being wide…..

I don’t blame you, watching A&M last year was painful at times. Sherman needs a couple more years to rebuild that program to what it was under R.C. Slocum and Jackie Sherrill.

I’ll agree with the “fuck Bud Adams” part, but I grew up with the Oilers, so even if they are in another city now I still like to remember parts of their history. Especially the time that Buddy Ryan and Kevin Gilbride got into a fight on the sideline of a playoff game.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
wade phillips started rob johnson in that game instead of flutie
April 28th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
it’s horrible..u have to look around on the page for the sports stories.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Robosack sucked
April 28th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
ill always remember that ms621. good stuff
April 28th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
To be fair, Purdue runs a spread. Brees is probably a top 5 QB. Orton has had a better career than 99% of QBs drafted in the 4th round.
Obviously playing against real defenses in the Big 10 on a weekly basis prepared them for the NFL. Unfortunately Texas Tech quarterbacks dont have that luxury.

I’m not a huge Titans fan at all, but that was pretty cool. And the radio call was classic. Especially the part where the radio announcer, after the TD, is screaming “And there are no flags on the field!” like he can’t even believe that there wasn’t a holding call or block in the back to fuck it all up.

I’d love to see A&M get back on its feet, I’m sick of Texas owning that state. I have my doubts that Sherman is the man for the job, but I guess we’ll see.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
live free or die hard was pg13 now terminator salvation is pg13. i hope its worth it
April 28th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
it will be. it will be.
and even if it isn’t, it’ll still be better than t3.
/t2 is my favorite movie of all time and i wish people making action movies would follow that model to the t

I have my doubts too. The Red River Rivalry has grown into one of the premier national rivals games (in the sense that ESPN promotes the hell out of it) and I wouldn’t mind seeing UT-A&M do the same.
Sherman has picked up a great QB recruit in Jamiell Showers, but if I was an Aggie I would worry that he is going to get too enamored with his own recruits. Jovorskie Lane, for example, was criminally underused last year.

T4 reminds me of transformers.

Anyone who watched aTm in the last few years would realize that they didn’t throw the ball much. And when they did, it wasn’t pretty. McGee made decent throws, but never anything like the throws you have to make in the NFL. I never saw him make more than 2 reads before tucking and running the ball.
Anyone who did any amount of homework would also know that McGee was the all time passing yards record for texas high school football before going to TA&M. Running the spread.
The Cowboys picked up a mildly more athletic guy (than Harrell) that hasn’t had to make tough reads or throws in 4 years. He hasn’t had much practice throwing the ball, or developed as a thrower since HS. Obviously they’re betting he’ll grow into a better QB than Harrell could. Me, I’m not sold on that. He took too many hard hits in college running the option for me to think he’ll have any sort of pro career.

im going to see it
April 28th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Are Big 12 QBs really that bad that two Iowa St products (Senecca Wallace and Sage Rosenfels) got the most run in the NFL last year?
April 28th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
ha. i forget theres a north division.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
me too. aggies are no. 2 behind the buckeyes on my list. loved kyle, loved everything about the program when i visited there.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
@spence. good thing you chose osu over tex a&m or you would be suicidal. the big 12 qbs probably aren’t as good as the media makes them out to be but they are better than most on here give them credit for. there are a lot of misses on qb in the nfl. it is just an unpredictable big jump. ps. i love leach and i am a ut grad.
