What Will the Bulls Do With Streaky Ben Gordon?
NBA, Video May 4th. 2009, 3:30pm
In 2007, Ben Gordon rejected a 5-year, $50 million deal from the Chicago Bulls.
In 2008, Ben Gordon rejected a 6-year, $54 million offer from the Chicago Bulls.
On July 1st, the streaky Gordon – who just titillated basketball fans everywhere with a memorable 24 ppg series against the Celtics – becomes an unrestricted free agent. His hard-driving agents seem to want Luol Deng money – 6-years, $71 million – even though Deng does everything well, and Gordon’s just a pure scorer.
“I love playing with Ben,” said Luol Deng. “We all want him back.”
Don’t see it happening. The Bulls can’t afford Deng, Hinrich (5-year, $47 million deal in 2006) and Gordon, as well as prepare for a financial future that should include Joakim Noah, Ty Thomas and Derrick Rose. So the Bulls will take a small PR hit in July when Gordon signs elsewhere, and then duplicate what happened in 2007-08: a big first-round triumph against the Heat, followed by a massive letdown in 2008 (33 wins in the year Bill Simmons predicted the Bulls would go to the Finals).
So next year, where will the Bulls turn for offense? John Salmons? Ha. Despite a 35-point explosion in game six, he only shot 40 percent in the series (31 percent from three) both of which were way, way down from his regular season numbers (47 and 41, respectively). Deng’s going to take a lot of his shots. One option could be to make Salmons the 6th man, and start Hinrich (who probably is a better all-around player, anyway).
They still don’t have a guy who can call for the ball in the post and make a move; Ty Thomas has zero back-to-the-basket skills, though his jumper is improving. So Rose-Salmons-Deng-Noah-Thomas is the likely scenario, with a decent bench two-some of Hinrich and Miller. Perhaps in the draft they can get a guy with some post game, like maybe Pitt’s Dejuan Blair. If anyone cares – one fan poll is running 60-40 to keep Gordon. Another spirited debate can be found here.
And even though this has nothing to do with Gordon, we had to link up this video of what might be the block of the year:

poor rappaport .
May 4th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Let him sign with the Pistons.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
I figured out what Dumars is gonna do. Sign Boozer, Artest and Gordon. Trade Rip and Prince.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Your hatred for John Salmons is approaching Brees-ian levels. Gordon’s not that much better of a scorer than Salmons, and with the Bulls’ surplus of perimeter players there’s no reason to pay Streak Money $12 mil a year.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
It’s not the block of the year when you block Scalabrine. Shit, Rose’s clutch block on Rondo at end of 3rd OT in Game 6 was better, all things considered.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Fuck Ben gordon. Sign and Trade.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Gordan is going to get overpaid and be a ball hog, shoot first player for another team. Good riddance, you greedy mother fucker.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Gordan, Gordon. Whatever, I had cocktails for lunch.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
They better be careful, or Lord Xerxes up there is gonna eat him.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

tailsfor lunch.be honest…
May 4th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Whoever signs Ben, at least we can all agree that Garnett is a bitch.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Kill your teams chances of winning a championship by paying a poor mans Gilbert Arenas? Do it Chicago.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
This would be like seriously overpaying Darren Sproles or something…you don’t pay a guy who can only do one a ton of money (which the Bulls were already burned by once when they signed Ben Wallace)
May 4th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Mark my words, whatever team Gordon is on next year, he will not be on that team the year after. Just oozes of a ‘what a terrible contract, we need to move this guy”
May 4th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
So the Knicks then. Great.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Sparty that was funny.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Not if the front office wants a huge cocksmack
May 4th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
check his record in games where he goes over 30 points, it isn’t that good over the last few years.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
And you’re fat, Tampa.
/both of you can go fuck yourselves.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
4th quarter, game 7, the quintessential Ben Gordon play. Chicago has worked so hard to get back to only 3 down, loose ball Gordon gets it, crosses midcourt and airballs a 3 with 22 seconds left on the shot clock. HE wanted to tie the score.
They need to let him sign elsewhere (nobody can afford to sign and trade, I don’t think) and install an offense, any offense.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Sportsgal- you’re fat too
May 4th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
i’m getting fat…
May 4th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Gordon puts up numbers. I believe its either the Czar or Hubie who likes to ask, “but are they winning numbers?” No, no they are not.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
The chipotle i just dropped in the toilet is fat……..these guys never cease to amaze me in their contract years, Next years numbers should be some of the best in league history with all the big money contracts comin off the books and becoming free agents.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
compared to you? I don’t think so.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Hold the phone. Im not morbidly obese over here. Just a big guy.
/Enjoy your cock sandwich
May 4th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
mmm…chipotle.
heaven wrapped in a tortilla.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
I like what Chuck said (first time I’ve agreed with him in years – he’s become out of touch with today’s NBA), “You can’t live by those jumpers, only die by them.” which is ultimately what Gordon did.
Also, in their careers, Salmons is a 54.4% shooter, while Gordon is a 55.4% shooter.
So for double the money, you get a guy who’s a slightly better shooter, eons worse defender, worse passer, worse rebounder, worse everything possible.
Makes sense.
Sign away, put Salmons on the bench.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
you must have meant 44%.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Good point. This compares to Gordon, who did shoot the lights out…
to the tune of 38% overall and 37% from 3, also well below his season and career averages.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
@sparty: No, I was citing TS% for both.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
give salmons credit. He’s a horrible, disinterested defender.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
ya know, i just learned all the new baseball stats. then you guys do this to me…
May 4th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Salmons had a bad hamstring. Give him a break. Hes a teammate not a ballhog like Gordon that goes a long way.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
i heard you were fat.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
Yea Im Black guy fat.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
With a healthy Deng back, you don’t need Gordon and Salmons. Gordon needs to walk and sign with an up-and-comer so he can ruin any chances at it becoming a true contender.
/looks at Michael Jordan
May 4th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
salmons is a pretty big gunner himself. he’s gotta get his.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
At least his shots are reasonable.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
I’ve been trying to make some kind of a deal for years like this…I’m chicago, and I trade some combo of 3 guys to Phoenix for Amare. But Phoenix is super cheap, and they’re not taking any salaries back, so they’re not taking Gordon or Salmons, or Deng. Hell, they gave Deng away a few years ago, for free.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
salmons shoots his fair share of crappy shots. And airballs. And solo dribbling exhibitions followed by contested 3’s.
You can keep him.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
if Salmons could play 82 games with only Scalabrine guarding him, he’d be an allstar.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
I would trade Deng, Heinrich and Thomas for Amare.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Been waiting all day for the C’s/Magic preview post….
C’s have back-court advantage. Magic have Dwight (who Perk has played well, but w/ KG for support). Rashard presents trouble for Baby at the 4. Baby can’t chase him out on the perimeter. Scal will have to play big minutes (Yikes!).
C’s in 7. I’m a homer, but I do believe C’s in 7.
Both benches are kinda weak.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
i actually like that trade for both sides. That’s the same trade i kept wanting Phoenix to make three years ago, before they severed ties with Joe Johnson (and when Ty thomas was only the draft choice). I always wanted Phoenix to run that same offense, but with 10 or 11 guys.
Chicago needs interior scoring. And Noah plays enough D to accomodate Amare.
May 4th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
Why not sign and trade him? That way some other team can guarantee themselves his services, Gordon gets a fatter payday and the Bulls get something for a former Top 10 pick of theirs.
May 4th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Dirt glad we see eye to eye.
May 4th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Let him walk or sign and trade. He will hinder Rose’s development.
May 4th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Deng IS more overrated than Paul Peirce and that’s hard to do !!!
I agree with the Amare trade scenario & D-Rose will shine regardless IMO
May 4th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Deng does everything well? One thing he didn’t do well, cost his team a chance at Kobe Bryant (the amazing “untouchable” Luol Deng)
