The ‘Cubs Suck’ T-Shirts Had to Be Turned Inside Out, But Why Not the Offensive Zambrano T-Shirts?
Baseball, Fans, Race May 5th. 2009, 9:00am
Who knew St. Louis was such a bubbling cauldron of racism? Joe Sports Fan attended a Cubs-Cards game at Busch this weekend two weeks ago and spotted a lout wearing this t-shirt.
Zambrano, who just went on the DL, has some anger issues (for further explanation, ask Michael Barrett), and we eagerly await his reaction once the Chicago media seek his thoughts on the t-shirt.

Anyone who has ever spent any time there?
May 5th, 2009 at 9:07 am

Ha! St. Louis sucks.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Whatever happened to Imig?
May 5th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Those emails are in regards to a biracial couple lip copulating on the cover of a Weekender-type publication, with no relation to the Zambrano Aztec Day Laborer t-shirt. I’m not saying St. Louis isn’t racist – it is, but at least make sure you’re promoting the right type of bigotry. But, to be fair, they do have a giant gay festival and parade downtown every year. So they got that goin’ for ‘em.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:13 am
that shirt offends me as a lawn mower, Zambrano is too fat to use a pusher.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:14 am
bsanders: whats the difference between latino racism and biracial couple racism?
May 5th, 2009 at 9:14 am
LOL
May 5th, 2009 at 9:14 am
I could go for some gooey butter cake from St Louis. Add some Imo’s pizza and i am good to fucking go
May 5th, 2009 at 9:15 am
this is bullshit the. the cubs DO suck. they shouldnt have had to turn their shirts inside out
May 5th, 2009 at 9:16 am
Nothing, they’re both bad. But the way TBL presented it made it sound like the emails were related to this two-week old shirt sighting, when it was really thousands of St. Louis residents verbally protesting the prominent display of a biracial couple on the PD’s Weekender magazine. I just wanted to make sure we were getting all the rampant St. Louis racism out there.

Bsanders -
You are doing the Lord’s work. Keep up the good work.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:18 am
Here in Florida you’ll never see a Me***an cutting a lawn….the’re all from Nicaragua & Guatemala. You can tell because they wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a sombrero
/tarbaby’d
May 5th, 2009 at 9:20 am
I didnt think TBL presented it like that… he posted this then got an email about another St Louis is racist example. But anyway yeah both are pretty gross.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:20 am
This is an outrage. Only Cubs fans should be allowed to make racist t-shirts about their players.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:22 am
See? We’re not racist – we have black friends!
And re: the shirt, another Hispanic as lawn care worker joke? How original.
This offends me as a comedian.

There are a lot of great Cardinal fans out there, just like there’s a lot of great Cub fans out there. But there are also SEVERAL living embodiments of all the nasty stereotypes you hear about each at every Cubs-Cards game. Shit, seeing what kind of people show up is almost as entertaining as the game.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:24 am
anyone who attends cards games – why are ’suck’ t-shirts turned inside out?
May 5th, 2009 at 9:26 am
anybody see where Joba’s Mom got busted for dealing meth?

Busch Stadium is really big on trying to create a “familial” atmosphere at their games. Not that there aren’t thousands of drunken idiots, anyway.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:29 am
probably because of the shirts in Boston that always said Yankees Suck on the front, but Jeter blows! on the back.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:29 am
I went there for a Red Sox series in 05. There was some guy chanting Red Sox suck. The usher walked up and told him if he did not stop rooting negatively they would ask him to leave.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:30 am
no wait — jeter swallows, that was it.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:31 am
It’s Cinco de Mayo for fuck’s sake!
May 5th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Jeter swallows, eh, I liked Jeter drinks Wine Coolers better.

Bills fans wear this shirt by the thousands to games, and no one cares

May 5th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Yeah, they’re real proud of the “best baseball city in America” tag. It’s a bit holier than thou, but if you’re interested in just relaxing, tossing back a few and watching baseball, it’s great. If you’re looking to get loaded and yell shit at the players and managers, then you’re probably going to be disappointed.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Tampa – no. please enlighten me.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Who’s meeting me at Chevy’s on route 3 after work today!!!!
May 5th, 2009 at 9:38 am
TY Duffy that Fukudome shirt is funny as hell. Cubs fans would wear that shit.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Not taking the bait.

Where’d Joba get his meth from? He got it from his momma…

tbl did this nice Zambrno post as an homage to his Latino readers in honor of the day
May 5th, 2009 at 9:42 am
Where do I get one of those shirts?
May 5th, 2009 at 9:42 am
I was told I might have to leave a PSU basketball game like 5 years ago for cheering negatively. Then the next game like everyone had negative signs and my yelling took a back seat, but an usher did think at one point I was going to fight the coach’s son.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:42 am
My office bringing in a taco bar today. Fuck ya!
May 5th, 2009 at 9:43 am
A lot of the best games are when your team is down about 6-1 in the 8th, basically no chance to win. Thats when all the drunk mocking fans come out of hiding. Insult after insult hurled at your own team thrown in with a bunch of mock cheers for the scrub reliever coming in. Always worth the price of admission.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:43 am
who were you rooting against joboo
May 5th, 2009 at 9:45 am
@St. Bear – that sounds incredible.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:47 am
I was just yelling how PSU should fire their coach.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:48 am
It’s as great as it sounds, and more. They have both marinated beef (strips, not the ground up crap) and chicken.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:50 am
Acting in my capacity as RAC, this T-shirt clearly meets all relevant criteria to be deemed racist. However, it would be a mistake to label the city of St. Louis and its baseball fans as racist.
Judgment for the plaintiff. Next case.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:51 am
This pretty much sums it up

Yet it will be done anyway. Hell with St. Louis.

@jason: sure you’re not really Paolo in disguise? He’s the resident judge here. You need to give out + and – and post a lot of smiley faces (which I don’t know how to do)
May 5th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Judging an entire city by a single t-shirt is what sadly passes for logic here sometimes.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Jason: how do you find in the “biracial couple kiss” case? By the amount of comments left on that article, St. Louis has to look bad there.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Nah, I’d say this is more like it.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Baseball is racist whats new.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:56 am
too funny
so blanket statements DON’T APPLY here? damn!
May 5th, 2009 at 9:57 am
Bsanders weren’t you shot in St.Louis?
May 5th, 2009 at 9:57 am
At least he didn’t spell it “brian”.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:58 am
I doubt if that had appeared in the Boston Globe the comments would be any better. Or if it had appeared in any city with a history of racial/class separation.
May 5th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Yep, three times by two black dudes, ergo all black people must be bad, right?

I can vouch that St. Louis baseball fans are pretty cool. They’ve always been very respectful when they take over the K when the Cards are playing KC.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:01 am
unrelated: anyone else not seeing fantasy updates on their yahoo teams?
May 5th, 2009 at 10:16 am
But mowing lawns is a valuable service–it’s not racist if you LIKE the race. To clear up a couple points
1. I don’t think that biracial couple photo generated “thousands” of letters; there really aren’t that many racists there, and not that many of them are literate.
- there’s a BIG difference between redneck St. Louis and the super-redneck areas surrounding it. The city/county are fairly normal (though a T-shirt like this suggests a middle-aged suburbanite who thinks he’s really clever).
- Ted Drewes’ concretes are the shiat.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:18 am
Yea I dont see any updates either.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:26 am
that’s a tough sell.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:31 am
The fantasy servers are in Mexico and have the day off for Cinco de Mayo.
May 5th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Zambrano is cutting the grass pretty damn short there. Is he mowing a baseball field?
May 5th, 2009 at 11:19 am
Biracial couple kiss:
This whole controversy was muchado about nothing. Basing any opinion off of anonymous message-board posters is a gigantic mistake. People say many things on a message board they would not say publicly.
And the truth is, my parents would be bothered by the picture. Discomfort with biracial relationships runs both directions.
Judgment for the defendant. Next case.

My favorite anti-St. Louis shirt is the one that says “St. Louis fans take it in their Pujols.”
