Despicable Baseball Fan or Capitalist? Nick Yohanek Catches Chris Coghlan’s Homer, Holds it for Ransom
Baseball, Fans May 16th. 2009, 2:30pm
Chris Coghlan of the Marlins (seen here with mouth agape) hit his first major league homer this week. The fan who caught the ball at Miller Park, Nick Yohanek, has his own blog. He detailed what went down next: In exchange for the ball, the pushy fan demanded a ball signed by Coghlan, a bat signed by Coghlan and a signed Hanley Ramirez bat. If you feel those demands are extreme, he calls this a “hobby.”
The Marlins tried to get away with just a bat; blogger said no dice. The Marlins team shrink was called in to negotiate. Mr. Blogger was sternly told he would not be receiving a Hanley Ramirez bat. Instead, he asked for tickets to a Marlins-Brewers tickets in June. Then Coghlan appeared, perhaps angry, and said, “You gonna give me my ball or what?”
He wasn’t the most polite or respectful guy about the whole process,” Coghlan said Thursday. “He told me he goes around a lot and catches these balls and holds them for ransom — even though he doesn’t say that he does, it seems that way.”
When Chris Coghlan is flipping burgers at Arby’s in Daytona Beach in 10 years, will this blogger still cling to this hollow victory? And really, is there that much value to Coghlan keeping the exact ball he clubbed out of the park? Why couldn’t the Brewers tell this loser to shove it and give Coghlan whatever ball they could find?
Can’t wait till this clown goes to Wrigley and gets his ass kicked.

i don’t think that guy asking for a hanley ramirez bat sounds excessive. what could that possibly cost them?
May 16th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
the dude should have been happy with the a fucking bat. what a douche bag. if he caught a 500th homerun i could see bats but a 1st career homerun? just give him the ball without asking for anything. again this guys is a douchebag.

In 10 years, the possibilities are endless

it’s a used baseball, no? If you’re the Brewers, offer him a new baseball in the package, and don’t listen to his counteroffers.
I hate Ebay and memorabilia collecting with all my soul.

this guy’s not even on the Brewers. Now I’m confused. Now I’m not. well whatever. Who is gonna buy that ball anyway?

and this guy is a cop? wow his supervisors should look into putting him on detail that requires absolutely no contact with people

Nick Yohanek should be run over by a bus

I have to go the other way on this. I understand the kid is a douche. But, he has something of value, he has the right to exploit it.
What if I go to a game and catch that ball. It’s the only time I am ever going to catch a home run in my life. I’m not going to let it go for free either.
Is it really that hard to get Hanley Ramirez to sign a bat?

From his own blog:
Unless I’m mistaken, I thought this novel length post on your own blog was your side of the story; and guess what, you still sound like a douchebag.
May 16th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
he does but why be a douche about it?…get a signed bat and move along…hanley ramirez has nothing to do with the situation and the ball has no value at this time to anyone except the douchebag and the guy who hit the homerun. at this time a major leaguer’s bat is worth more than a guy’s first homerun ball.

he want a hamburger, no a cheeseburger, and a hot dog….
He’ll get nothing and like it!!

WOW, the kid who is NOT a millionaire is the loser? How about this cry baby bitch millionaire give up what the guy wants, you would give me what I wanted or I would burn it on national TV.
FUCK YOU Chris Coghlan

Just heard the ‘Happy Youngster’ on the radio talking about the proceedings. He sounded reasonable.
I think they were going to offer him another ball or something at first, then he asked for the bats, signed “To Nick” (that way they don’t think he’s trying to sell them on eBay or something). The team kinda jerked him around and he decided to hang onto the ball. A team rep apparently promised him he’d meet Coghlan and Ramirez after the game and they’d do the switch then.
Can’t we make a ruling here? If you’re a fan and you catch a home run ball and the hitter wants it back, shouldn’t he have to give something up other than a ball? Maybe a signed bat? Personal picture?
Fuck, is the Marlins franchise REALLY tight for cash?

The kid has something of value that legally became his when it went over the fence. He asked for those bats and whatever as consideration for the baseball in return.
I’m not seeing the problem?
