Tony Romo Descends Upon Lake Lewisville in Texas, Tries to Top Tom Brady in the Hat Department
NFL, Trendspotting June 2nd. 2009, 4:38pm
Here’s Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (winless in the playoffs; that ends this year, for sure) in a boat on Lake Lewisville, in Texas, with his girlfriend, Jessica Simpson and presumably some teammates. Note the curious plaid hat selection by Mr. Romo.
Hmmm. A nod to Tom Landry’s hat-wearing ways, perhaps? A month ago, Tom Brady broke out a fashionable hat in NYC. Coincidence?
Or just a guy trying to protect himself from UV rays?
[UPDATE: More of the photos can be found here.]

This story is probably on ESPN with a “developing” label attached.
June 2nd, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Not that I like the hat, but it’s an extremely popular style right now…I hardly think it’s a “curious selection.”
/really wasted my time reading this?
June 2nd, 2009 at 4:52 pm
He’ll never do what Macho Man did for hats.
June 2nd, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Mort is reporting the hat is a gift from Simpson.
June 2nd, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Why isn’t there a “hats” tag? Athletes and their hats is emerging as the most talked about trendspotting thing of the summer.
June 2nd, 2009 at 4:54 pm
A nod to Tom Landry’s hat-wearing ways, perhaps?
Wasn’t he in Nickelback?

June 2nd, 2009 at 4:56 pm
i’ll see your macho man and raise you this kobe hat (circa ?)
June 2nd, 2009 at 4:59 pm
I liked Cedric Benson’s boat much better.
June 2nd, 2009 at 4:59 pm
Oh yeah. Definitely a TBL post. Welcome back.
Looks like Rome is doing a final burn on hats now too.
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:00 pm
KC Res …. first name NBA player to wear a hat walking into the arena at the Finals will earn a spot here and introduce the HATS tag.
how’s life in the heartland? how’s posnanski? whitlock behaving?
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:00 pm
That hat looks like it was made out of 100% recycled wicker chairs. It’s probably in Sasha Vujacic’s closet right now. A hand-me-down.

I’m gonna take a stab in the dark and go with Damon Jones. He did wear this suit to the all-star game. FF to the 19-20 second mark.

(winless in the playoffs; that ends this year, for sure)
I don’t even believe this, and I am a Cowboy fan. What leads you to believe that they’re even making the playoffs? For me, it’s not much. Our QB is this guy. Tom Brady is working his ass off. Peyton Manning is working his ass off. This jagoff is trying to qualify for the US Open and hanging around like a dumbass.
Our number one receiver is lazy, slow and quits when he doesn’t get his touches. Our supergenius offensive coordinator can’t call running plays. We’ve got an INT throwing gunslinger of a QB. Our run defense is the world’s worst. Our Nose Tackle thinks his job is to try and get sacks, leaving blockers to block our lousy linebackers. Our secondary is really expensive and really terrible.
We’re totally winning a playoff game.
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:16 pm
Baron is not in the playoffs, but there should already be a hats tag
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:16 pm
A man and his hat are soon parted.

Thread jack: no one cares
/thread jack
soccer post was earlier today sorry you missed it
Nope. Didn’t miss it.
And the point of a thread jack is regardless of whoever cares. But that’s okay. I’m sure we’ll get another post on Cleveland/Ohio sports within the next 10 minutes. I’ll add it onto that one.
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:17 pm
is it just me or does jessica look like she is inhaling a hotdog in that pic?
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:19 pm
/fixed because it is true
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:20 pm
The Kaka signing is unconfirmed. Spanish radio station is reporting it. Kaka’s agent and Milan deny they have reached a deal.
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Speaking of Tags…I find it very hard to believe that the Erin Andrews tag has only 4 posts in it. Ms. Pageviews has appeared wayyyyy more than 4 times on this piece of real estate.
/soon to be over-run by the HATS tag
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:26 pm
I’m sure we’ll get another post on Cleveland/Ohio sports getting owned again by a Florida team again within the next 10 minutes.
/fixed because it is true
You’re just saying that because Orlando…and University of Florida…and the Florida Marlins…and…nevermind.
The Kaka signing is unconfirmed. Spanish radio station is reporting it. Kaka’s agent and Milan deny they have reached a deal.
Saw that plus he’s saying he’s going nowhere. That said, Perez and Galliani are both in Madrid. Guess we’ll see.
If true though, that’s an obscene amount of money to pay for one player.

air france flight did crash in the ocean, everyone dead
I heard the pilot landed the plane exactly like Sully did, but because it wasn’t near NYC, no one cared or showed up to help them
/too soon, right?
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:37 pm
i heard the pilot tried to land the plane like sully did but then he remembered he was french and surrendered to the sweet sweet release of death.
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Cowboys just also cut Gregg Ellis. If you run a 4/3, jump up and sign this guy.
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:43 pm
americans were on board
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:52 pm
What’s the money line of if TBL owns a hat like Romo?
Even?
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:56 pm
thats gotta suck balls man. a lot of people dont like flying and i can just picture someone getting on a plane for the first time and now they are in the atlantic
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Before the pictures were taken or now?
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:59 pm
how’s life in the heartland? how’s posnanski? whitlock behaving?
Posnaski almost wrote his, “Royals are finished for the season” column last week. I suspect that’ll be Saturday’s column.
Whitlock is being called a reverse racist for noting that three middle aged white men control a bunch of black athletes on the court. He’s right.
Otherwise, the heartland is a bit wet right now, but all is as it should be this time of year. Royals stinking, most everyone is talking about the Chiefs, and just waiting for college football.
June 2nd, 2009 at 5:59 pm
americans were on board
then I take back what I said. I was hoping it was all French people.
I took Air france from Miami to Paris to Cairo once, and felt like burning my clothes when I got off the plane from the B.O.

Tartan,
Now.
June 2nd, 2009 at 6:10 pm
I can’t imagine if a certain cagey scenester showed up on US Weekly wearing a bowler hat. TBL’s server couldn’t handle that.
June 2nd, 2009 at 6:15 pm
actually got a wicked hat that’s a blend of bradys and romo’s 2 summers ago in LA. surf shop on the cultural hearth known as huntington beach. it was an impulse purchase and the wife refuses to let me wear it in public.
i usually wear it when i BBQ in the backyard.
June 2nd, 2009 at 6:23 pm
TBL,
Thanks for not letting me down. Good to have you back.
June 2nd, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Per the hat thing… yeah, that’s going to be this summer’s fashion thing. I was on the river a couple weeks ago for a long weekend and the frat and sorority kids were wearing them. It appeared the style hasn’t reached the Middle Missouri Methheads yet. Per a conversation with one of the girls, Justin Timberlake started (ahem, restarted) this trend last year or something. I dunno. I just opened another beer and adjusted my codpiece.
June 2nd, 2009 at 7:01 pm
KC,
I’m still rockin’ the merkin.
June 2nd, 2009 at 7:04 pm
1. Lets not judge Romo’s work ethic on daily rag photos. Sure he is not Brady or Manning but he is certainly better then 1/2 the leagues qb’s and did so by working his way from an undrafted free agent.
2. Our number one receiver came from the worst team the last decade and came into a injury ravaged team midway through the season. From all reports he has been working his ass off for this season.
3. Our Nose tackle is undersized and is used more as a pass rusher by the coach. But still ratliff is a probowler.
4. The Secondary is actually really cheap and just really young right now.
5. That world’s worst run defense was better then 20 other teams last year.
As a Cowboys fan I certainly do think a playoff win is a possibility but I still have my doubts. But seriously the glass isn’t as empty as your comments make it out to be
June 2nd, 2009 at 7:45 pm
I think the Cowboys are doomed as long as Wade is the head coach. He works well in some situations–he wasn’t too bad in Buffalo, as I recall, even if he sucked here in Denver–but this doesn’t look like one.
June 2nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh?
Oh, it looks good on you though.
