Relish Randy’s 300; He’ll Be the Last One For Awhile. The Next 300-Game Winner Will Be …
Baseball June 5th. 2009, 12:15pm
CC Sabathia? That seems to be one popular guess. All he’ll need to do is average 18 wins over the next 10 years! That should be no prob – he’s won 18 games once in his nine-year career so far. If Pedro Martinez can get an arm transplant, he’ll need just eight more seasons while averaging 11 wins. Of course, that’ll mean he’ll be pitching until he’s as old as Jamie Moyer.
Guess this makes Randy Johnson’s feat all the more impressive. After the jump, a chart: player, age, win total.
CC Sabathia 28 122
Carlos Zambrano 28 99
Mark Buehrle 30 128
Jon Garland 29 110
Jake Peavy 28 91
Roy Oswalt 31 131
Johan Santana 30 116
Andy Pettitte 37 220
Pedro Martinez 37 214
Roy Halladay 32 140
The logical conclusion: Maybe Bert Blyleven’s 287 wins are more impressive than his dull resume indicates?
Nah.

i dont see it ever happening again.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Pfeh. Wins are one of the single worst statistics in sports. I think Jose Lima won 20 one time. It values longevity far more that ability.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
If I had to pick one out of those I’d take Halladay. I really don’t see anyone doing it though. Possibly ever again.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
Or 9 wins over the next 20 years. Or 10 or so (suck at math) over the next 18 years (that is, if he pitches until he’s the same age RJ is now). The point is, at least one of those guys will get there, and knowing where they’re at now doesn’t really help much. It will be the one who stays healthy into his 40s. Posnanski made the point recently that every 300 game winner had at least a dozen wins in their 40s.
I think the most likely candidates from that list are Sabathia, Buehrle, and Halladay.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Phil Hughes and/or Joba
June 5th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
sic?
Oswalt deserves better than the 131.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
If Pettite averages 12 wins for the next 7 years, he’ll get there. If he gets back on the juice, maybe he has the best shot.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
i think itll happen again, but its definitely a dying milestone, with inning caps and crap.
halladay’s a good bet.
i’m really cranky, sitting on the floor of a data closet programming a router in a shitty ass smelly hospital
June 5th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Yankees are always good so CC has a shot. Hes the only one.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
10 of the 24 300 game winners won their 300th game after 1980. Anyone who thinks it will never happen again should read this.

Cole Hamels, under the wing of Jaime Moyer the past few years, has said he wants to pitch until he’s Moyer’s age, I believe.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Tyler Clippard.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Danny Almonte could be the sleeper pick here.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
I think Buehrle isn’t getting enough credit here. He has averaged 14.75 wins per season for 8 years and if he keeps that up, he’ll have 137 after the ‘09 season and be 30 years old. He needs another 11 seasons of 14.75 wins to make 300 and that would make him 41 years old. Buehrle isn’t exactly the type of guy that puts a lot of strain on his body and his no-DL career to this point suggests great longevity. I think he has a 50/50 chance of making it and that may be better than most others.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
He has a huge injury history and his back is made of bleu cheese. He aint last’n.

mark prior’s picture perfect mechanics will allow him to win 300
/a hundred+ years? really?
June 5th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
won’t happen again because guys who can do it make so much money there’s no incentive to pitch 20 years. back in the day, these guys had to keep pitching to feed the kids/demons/wives. that’s the most important reason it won;t happen agan
June 5th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
@ sponge
so you’re a sadist?
cuz you’d have to be one to get it up in this place

June 5th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
@Vezina – you forgot that they also have to feed their egos.
If a guy has the skills, stats, and the circumstance to get close to the milestone (which usually gets them into the Hall) he’ll pitch until someone tells him to stop.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
gsg, can you share a tip on this avatar uploading you master? i have blue sideways G and no cure
June 5th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
lol. i hate Laugh Out Loud, but i did at that one. +1, since Paolo isnt here for scoring
i scared the shit out of some nurses walking by in the hallway, they saw my feet sticking out in front of the door and thought i was a junkie or something
June 5th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
hey GSG, now that you’ve got that avatar up, i can’t tell what it is. It looks like a stick figure drawing on a napkin, but we can’t read the caption.
please put up a link to it, as i am quite curious.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Ghost i get your point, maybe we do this–for players or pitchers who have started big-league careers in the past 5 years, who will play for 20? assuming pitchers are more fragile
June 5th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
@Gfunk…that article does absolutely nothing to support the notion that there will be more 300 game winners.
I don’t see it happening.
June 5th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
plus, ghost, now that i re-read your post, just to get close means he has a monster contract. i’d rather bet a bunch of money on no one doing it again than on someone, and that includes a lot of people

Please please please do not endorse the notion that Paolo is responsible for scoring.
June 5th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
The one I have up now is Frank Grimes, and the napkin one is Gil from the simpsons:
June 5th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
I’d bet money that we’ll have a 300 winner again. Few have done it, but that’s why it’s a milestone for the Hall since it’s a rarity.
And for some reason it’s not letting me link the pitcure of gil.

cursed just looked at your website. Disgraceful article on Tait. I suggest your next be how unlucky Cleveland is. Indians current, shitty owner has a hear attack last week but survives. Their previous, great owner now dies today.
Are you the TV personality or the poker player?
June 5th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
johnson’s one of those, like koufax, who didn;t need to win 300 to get in HOF. you win multiple cy youngs, not to mention WS titles and WS MVP, you don;t need to hang around
can anyone help with the avatar tips? i’m 42 and lazy, explaining why i don’t know more about this
June 5th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Of course, that’ll mean he’ll be pitching until he’s as old as Jamie Moyer
Moyer still has a chance
/Satchel Paige’d
Actually, he just has to average 14 wins until 2012.
June 5th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
@ Vezina – Go to gravatar.com and set up an account. Make sure that you use the same E-Mail as you do here.

If Tim Hudson can somehow recover, he has to average 15 until he’s 44

June 5th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Jamie Moyer is at 250. He’s still pitching at 46. Is there a steep physical decline from 46 to 51? He could enter next season needing 40 more wins.
June 5th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Ty, and 50 more pills
Ghost, thanks for the avatarosity
June 5th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
sorry to purport that idea, Jay. Paolo’s comments amuse me, if only for the weirdness/out of left field factor most of them contain
June 5th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
please please please do not endorse the notion that Jay is responsible for asking you not to endorse the notion Paolo is responsible for scoring
