NBA Draft: A Look at the Non-Lottery Teams
NBA Draft June 11th. 2009, 2:45pm
Because we’re geeky about the NBA draft, beginning tomorrow, we’ll take a team-by-team look at the lottery leading up to the draft on June 25. Here are a few thoughts on the rest of the first round.
15. Detroit Pistons – Offensively-challenged (3rd lowest scoring average in the league), they’ll probably lose Iverson, Rasheed and McDyess. They’ll need to go big, but that’ll have to be addressed via free agency. Pick: Gani Lawal, Georgia Tech. Maybe he’ll be good enough so we can quit hearing about the alleged greatness of Amir Johnson.
16. Chicago Bulls – Brad Miller’s got one more year and the team still lacks a consistent interior scoring threat. Pick: The best post scoring presence in the draft, Pitt’s DeJuan Blair, if he falls this far. If not, Wake’s James Johnson, though soft, could be the guy.
17. Philadelphia 76ers – Can they get a starting PG to take the place of Andre Miller? Assuming Flynn, Curry, Jennings, Lawson and Maynor are off the board, that leaves Wake’s Jeff Teague (who’s a scorer, like Louis Williams), UCLA’s Darren Collison, and St. Mary’s, Patty Mills. Pick: Collison’s a pure PG, but so undersized that we’d look elsewhere and take a chance on Mills, the Olympian.
18. Minnesota Timberwolves – With three first-round picks, they can patch serious holes. The only guys on the roster with potential logevity – Foye (SG), Jefferson (C), Love (PF). Assuming they go PG with the first pick, two names jump out here as potential SFs (if you don’t like Corey Brewer): DeJuan Summers of Georgetown and Sam Young of Pitt. Pick: Young, though SG Wayne Ellington is intriguing, since Foye can play some point.
19. Atlanta Hawks – Biggest need: PG for Bibby (Acie Law isn’t the future, apparently). Pick: Ty Lawson of UNC. Improved significantly as a senior.
20. Utah Jazz – Boozer’s opting out. Millsap’s a free agent. What will Okur do? Pick: All signs point to a power forward, and Tyler Hansbrough seems like a logical fit. The Jazz like surprises … what about Luke Harangody? Nice inside-outside player; Derrick Brown of Xavier wouldn’t be a bad choice, either. Austin Daye’s way too soft for Jerry Sloan, but he’ll probably be considered.
21. New Orleans Hornets – Struggle badly scoring and rebounding, and the team could undergo a significant offseason overhaul. Pick: LSU’s Marcus Thornton. Local kid, and a better scorer than FSU’s Toney Douglas. Could be a nice wingman for CP3.
22. Dallas Mavericks – With Jason Kidd a free agent, would you prefer to draft a new PG, or go with the Barea/Terry combo? What about unloading occasionally problematic/injured SF Josh Howard? Pick: Arizona’s Chase Budinger and Dirk would form the best white shooting combo in the league.
23. Sacramento Kings – Such a mess. How much longer do they wait on Hawes/Thompson? We’re going to have them take a SG/SF scorer at 4, since no PG other than Rubio has value there. Pick: Jon Brockman to team with former UW teammate Hawes? Give the 2nd worst rebounding team in the league a banger like PF Jeff Pendergraph of ASU.
24. Portland Trail Blazers – Pick: UNC’s Danny Green could replace Travis Outlaw if the Blazers’ starting SF leaves following next season.
25. Oklahoma City Thunder – Can’t find a center his late, and assuming they take Rubio at 3, you’ll have to assume they look for a PF here. USC’s Taj Gibson adds toughness, MSU’s Goran Suton is a fundamentally-sound player, and a sleeper would be LSU center Chris Johnson for shot-blocking ability. Pick: We’ll lean Gibson here because he seems to have a mean streak this team lacks.
26. Chicago Bulls – Pick: Your new instant offense gunner after Ben Gordon leaves: Miami’s Jack McClinton. This spot is probably early for him, but the guy’s a scoring machine.
27. Memphis Grizzlies – With Thabeet at No. 2, the frontline is set. Conley and Mayo are good in the backcourt. This team should be one season away from a playoff spot. We’d consider trading this pick, or perhaps select a scorer for stretches when Mayo runs cold. Pick: Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks qualifies.
28. Minnesota Timberwolves – For a moribund franchise, stashing a Euro seems crazy, but why not? A new GM is unlikely to try this, since he may only have three years to turn things around. Pick: Was looking for a big, athletic Euro … and Victor Claver fits that description. You can thank Chad Ford for this one.
29. Los Angeles Lakers – With Odom and Ariza possibly departing, a SF is the top priority. Pick: Tennessee’s Tyler Smith has a nice skill set, and we’d give him a slight nod of Damion James of Texas because offensive ability.
30. Cleveland Cavaliers – Has to be a power player, preferably for defense, just in case they can’t land Shaq, Amare, Z-Bo, Rasheed, Bosh or whomever. Pick: For interior toughness, plus the ability to step out and hit a jumper: Gonzaga’s Josh Heytvelt.

the talk of Amir pretty much stopped around All-Star break.
June 11th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Not sure geeky’s strong enough. I would’ve gone with socially crippled…
/Hurry football season, hurry
June 11th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
except that tyrus thomas is becoming that guy.
June 11th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Is Thomas dead?
/Worst. Draft. EVAR.
June 11th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
i’d love to see a breakdown of TThomas baskets this season. other than dunks, how many times do you think he got the ball and went to a move? his jumper improved, but he was on the bench during crunch time of most of the Boston games (in favor of Miller)
June 11th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
And they’re working out Hansbrough… We’re becoming the Duke of the NBA. Draft/Recruit guys that are thought to be winners but lack the talent to get there. Except, Tyrus Thomas of course.

Meeks is just as streaky as Mayo, if not more so. Meeks drives too much and his 3 is veryyyyyyyyyyy spotty.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
kid keeps improving, as does Noah. Noah will do the dirty work, and Thomas will be the style.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Is this real? Are they really considering bringing him in? What kind of pieces would that require them to send to PHX?
June 11th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
No Shaq talk, please. PLEASE!
June 11th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
These arent projections are they. No way Mullens falls out of 1st. And I know you dont have him in the lottery.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
here are your shooting details for thomas.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
yes, i have mullens at the back end of the lottery. sad but true.
Shaq nearly went to Cleveland at the AS break. that was the rumor.
Ty Thomas – Blair is a more polished player right now than Thomas is. smarts, rebounding, inside moves. thomas is just a freakish athlete who looks like he’s still growing into his body. i like that he can leap, and his dunks/blocks are nice, but blair, offensively, is an upgrade
June 11th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
T-Will all day
June 11th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
he is? how so?
June 11th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Thomas is trade bait
June 11th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
You dont like Thomas Bo? Cavs need to get Blair or Hansbrough.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I’d say Blair’s back to the basket game is leaps and bounds ahead of Thomas. But Thomas can shoot from 15 feet…and over a defender because of his length and jumping ability. Blair can’t.
I see Blair as being Sean May but with desire and weight room discipline.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
my trained GM eye tells me he has much better post moves (drop step, pivot, hook), a softer touch, better feet, and is a smarter rebounder in that despite being undersized, he was one of the best (best?) offensive rebounders in the nation. that said, he’s prone to dumb fouls.
of course, this is purely subjective and you could feel the same way about Thomas, but …
June 11th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
How is lawson not available at 17 then there for hawks at 19?
June 11th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Hold on TBL…
Yet at pick 19…
Tell me how that works?
June 11th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Word.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
So Damion James ISN’T backing out of the NBA Draft?!?! Clown, can you verify this?
/ Avery Bradley and Jordan Hamilton better show up at Texas ready to fill big shoes.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
I like him but he expendable. He needs to be apart of a package deal to bet a solid big.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
we’ll see how good blairs moves are against grown men. i bet kinda like oden’s.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
If you really think about it there are tons of shitty big men in the NBA and the way Blair treated Thabeet is a good example of what he can do against 60% of guys. How tall is Thabeet like 7′3″ or some shit. Thats one inch lower than Yao. I wouldnt write that guy off.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Withdrawal deadline is this coming Monday. I kinda hope he stays in the draft. It’ll open up things for Sexy Dexy winning the Naismith next year.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
hakeem nicks
June 11th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
blair vs. gtown stud fresh Monroe: 20 pts, 17 rebs
blair vs. Thabeet: 22 pts, 23 rebs
if he can avoid the dumb fouls, i can see him as a nice PF. i can see him having a nice long, solid NBA career.
monroe and thabeet are consensus top 5 picks (well, monroe is when he exits)
June 11th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Big tuna- I was just going to post that. Apparently TBL has 30 guys being taken in the top 15 and Ty Lawson getting drafted twice.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Outlaw started 6 games last season. I don’t think small forward is a position Portland will be drafting for this year with Batum, Webster and Outlaw all on the roster.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Bo- not writing him off, but i think it is foolish to say that a kid that is only a sophomore is a more polished player. he was good in college, no doubt. but some people talk like he is the next Mound Round of Rebound.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
@ Clown: If Damion comes back, Texas will def run shit this year. If he goes, everyone else has to step up, including some people I don’t know are capable of stepping up (cough cough Gary Johnson). I think Dexter will emerge as a leader of next year’s team, and Wangmene is healthy which helps, and I know you saw Avery Bradley at the dunk contest. I’m ready for next season.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Winner
June 11th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
so was darko.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
You shut your mouth. He’s coming back to school.
/daydreaming of a frontcourt with Lawal and Favors
June 11th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
oden had no moves in college, just a manchild.
i hope oden is ok. really, i do. that guy looks like he has a fragile psyche. all those reports about him never looking/acting happy … being in portland far from friends and family …
get your mind right, greg!
June 11th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Maybe a little longer considering Hawes has played 2 seasons and Thompson just finished his first.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
bruce pearl just twittered that tyler smith is staying at UT.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
And olowakandi
June 11th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
GTech always gets screwed over by guys leaving early.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Texas should easily take 2nd in the Big 12
June 11th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
you’re content with Batum/Webster when Outlaw leaves? He’s going to way $
June 11th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
PEEE EEEEEEMMMMM ROUND UPPPPPP (clap clap clap-clap-clap)
June 11th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Crittendon leaving set the program back at least 2 years.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Pearl just lost a previous PG committment to Matta.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
TBL Thanks for the career long fellatio

Why can’t I find a blogger like that? Like TBL.
/ Kevin Durant, sung to the tune of “Jessie’s Girl”
June 11th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Conley did the same to OSU, but he went top 5 cant blame him. F4 run helps.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
I’m not sure how I feel about Tyler staying at UT. If he can find a position and develop a jump shot, he’ll be great. He was great year before last, but last year he tried to do way too much and was a liability more often than not.
And yeah, losing Craft to OSU hurts.
June 11th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Tenn has a good chance to get the top 20 player from in state Sean.
June 11th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Tyler Smith can step in front of a bus.
/bitter Hawkeye alum
June 11th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Duder: Who’s that? I’m hearing all the local kids are choosing the Memphis camp over TN.
June 11th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
So… Lawson unavailable at 17, but available at 19? Thoughts?
June 11th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
aren’t the bulls looking at the Israeli guy, TBL?
MY work DNS blocker just classified SI.com as bikini/lingerie so I can longer access it. Anyone know a way around that?
June 11th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
@ Sean John, check out Parrish’s article, they are forced to go to Memphis because they are a nike AAU team and one kid wants to get invited to the nike camp. They don’t have a choice.
Also, I would just like to state for the record I think DeRozan is going to be the biggest bust in this draft, the guy isn’t going to learn to shoot a jumper.

June 11th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Hoops World and Draft Express have both said he’s staying in the draft. If that changes it’ll be interesting in terms of the numbers because Texas is only losing AJ and Wretchley and would add the three signees, Jai Lucas and maybe J’Covan Brown who is hoping to get cleared by the NCAA this week. Anyway, even without Damion we should be sick next season.
June 11th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
yeah, that looks like a mistake.
