The Mob Knee-Capped Tim Donaghy in Prison?
Courts, Legal, NBA, The Mob June 11th. 2009, 9:00am
Two months into Tim Donaghy’s 15-month prison sentence, a press release claims the disgraced referee was attacked by the mob, and apparently the injuries were so severe that he’s going to be released early - June 17 - so that he can have surgery. It’ll be terrific fodder for the guy’s book, which he’ll complete at a halfway house in Tampa. Assuming, of course, the mob doesn’t rub him out before it’s completed.
Donaghy’s release date has recently been in question due to concerns about his medical condition. Donaghy was injured during an assault in November of 2008. During the assault, another inmate claiming ties to the New York mob beat Donaghy with a heavy object. Donaghy suffered severe knee and leg injuries that will require surgery.
We’ll offer a write-in vote for Matt Damon to play Donaghy in the movie that will inevitably be made.

David Stern is sitting in his office, wondering who to punish for Donaghy surviving the assault.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:08 am
is the guess that he owed them money, or he ratted them out to the feds?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:11 am
My guess is that if he ratted them out, he’d have a lot worse than knee injuries. I’m going with he owes money.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:11 am
I think that he owed them money. If he ratted whoever out to the feds, he’d be dead. They kept him alive so he’d pay them back.

Puh-Lease…. Some guy in the joint wants to score points, so he beats on this guy in Jail. Of course Donaghy might oweguys more money,or he might be told to keep his mouth shut. He was helping the mob make money by telling them the refs, not the actual gambling part. But he aint gonna get beat down in the joint for that. Waste of time even having that conversation between connected guys. Now if he gets in the radio booth for team Federal, then it’s time to talk about getting some doctors to come in and perform the operation.

I’m going to go with the guy that has Jersey in his name.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:23 am
@ Jersey
Exactly. Why on earth would Donaghy owe anybody anything? He was the inside guy. I am guessing he recieved money, not paid it out. He probably got a beatin’ because he got pinched and didn’t keep his trap shut.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:26 am
This guy doesnt even crack the top 10 of most corrupt NBA officials.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:28 am
Didn’t Donaghy have a gambling problem too? Isn’t that how he got himself in that mess in the first place?

I thought he was placing bets on the games as well?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:29 am
He had a gambling addiction. I think he owed money initially and started fixing the games to pay it back.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:29 am
Maybe Timmy D’s just an asshole.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:32 am
sounds about right

Who plays Stern? David Cross looks enough like him to pull it off…

cnn story detailing his gambling addiction

He was also sharing this information with the connected books. Even though he was making money by affecting the outcomes (I can’t really call it fixing), the bookies were probably collecting huge sums with the information they knew from guys like m… err… I mean degenerate gamblers.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Even though he was making money by affecting the outcomes (I can’t really call it fixing)
he was fixing totals. He was calling fouls to get teams in the penalty early in the fourth, and then cheap whistles late, to increase the scores of games to get them over the total. That’s what he was doing for the mob.
For David Stern, he was fixing games, as instructed.

maybe Timmy D shoulda found this guy

My money’s on Jon Voight
June 11th, 2009 at 9:49 am
I’ve just always thought of fixing games as actually affecting winners and losers. To do that, you gotta have a player or coach on the take… I thought Donaghy’s information helped tipped the bets in the terms of covering spreads.
June 11th, 2009 at 9:50 am
Let’s be real, some version of Seth Rogen/Will Ferrell is gonna get the rights to this…..

This same Matt Damon?
June 11th, 2009 at 9:56 am
Thank you mob guys from the fans everywhere that he f’d over and C-Webb thanks you too.

Stern sits in office giddy this morning as his plan is working… Donaghy will be available to ref potential game 7!

Can I suggest David Spade making a dramatic turn?

I think this is just how the refs in the NBA are instructed to perform. How many teams don’t end up in the penalty in the 4th quarter, at least on their home court?
