Derrick Rose, Did You Really Need to Be Photographed Throwing Up Gang Signs?

We don’t speak gang, but according to some folks in Chicago, what you see here is NBA Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose flashing a sign for “Gangster Disciples gang, which originated on the South Side of Chicago.” The photo, which appears to have been snapped at a party in a haze of “smoke,” is undated.
This is not to say that Rose is/was affiliated with these seedy characters. Perhaps he’s just have fun flashing gang signs – some people think that’s funny. We will not opine on the redness of his eyes.
Rose has largely avoided trouble with the law – with the exception of a speeding ticket and the recent SAT snafu. He was, at times, unguardable in the epic series against the Celtics. He’s only 20, and as long as he can avoid a sophomore slump, there’s no reason to believe he can’t become one of the league’s top point guards – right in whatever group is behind CP3, Tony Parker and Deron Williams.
Assuming he can avoid trouble, of course.

From Chicago. Had to go through some training regarding gangs as a camp counselor a few years ago.
There are two huge gangs in the South Side of Chicago. Rose is flashing the sign of one of them, and the dude behind him is flashing the sign of the rival gang. So yah, non story. It’s two kids fooling in front of a camera. Like JPQ said every teenage girl has pics like this on myspace

There won’t be ever any serious investigation in the NBA or US professional sports in general with regard to gang affiliations of multiple players, and I am not being critical in that regard.
So many of these guys turned to the gangs for a hazardous form of father figure in their youth, and now that they’ve made it it is a matter of respect and tribute.
It is still not a good idea to flash such signs for cameras though, and they should just stay undercover if they are associated with any prominent gang.
