Department of Apologies: Derrick Rose
1-liner, NBA June 12th. 2009, 11:45amDerrick Rose: It seems silly that a 20-year-old NBA player should apologize for throwing up gang signs in a photo. Who hasn’t done that? Derrick Rose of the Bulls apologized anyway: “I want to emphatically state, now and forever, that Derrick Rose is anti-gang, anti-drug, and anti-violence. I am not, nor have I ever been, affiliated with any gang and I can’t speak loudly enough against gang violence, and the things that gangs represent. In posing for this picture, I am guilty of being young, naive and of using extremely poor judgment. I sincerely apologize to all my fans for my mistake.” On the media side of things, the Trib tracked the story all afternoon; the Sun-Times had nothing until Rose apologized. (Trib)

I assume this is in jest, right?
Actually think it was a good apology, no matter how canned.

Excellent apology, and the Sun-Times are shaming the good name of Roger Ebert.

If it was LeBron throwing gang signs, would Stern have apologized for him?
June 12th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Of course not, Stern would have marketed it.

Here we go again. Some irresponsible blooger says that Derrick Rose is in a gang, and now look what happens.

And also fined him a trivial amount to avoid the appearance of a double standard.

Glad he didn’t slip up and say anti-semetic

At least his public persona is.

You’re right Bem, Stern should change the rule. He should change it to where players have to be out of school for at least two years before filing for the draft. Here’s an extra kicker for you, players who are found to have knowingly committed NCAA violations whiole in school are subject to being suspended and fined by the NBA for their actions. I know you guys aren’t going to like that but the NBA and the NCAA have to start thinking proactively and this is one way to do it.
