ESPN Isn’t Going to Grab a TV Guy to Be Ombudsman, Is It?
1-liner, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings June 17th. 2009, 5:30pmESPN: Is the WWL ready to tab lifelong TV guy Don Ohlmeyer as its new ombudsman? Ohlmeyer is famous for hiring Dennis Miller to work in the MNF booth … you know how that worked out. He also thought Norm MacDonald wasn’t funny (wrong) on Weekend Update. Other not-really-relevant info: He’s buddies with OJ Simpson, went to rehab once, and if you want to believe his wikipedia, has a longstanding feud with David Letterman. Just a guess, but this wouldn’t work out half as well as a print person with no connections to preserve or future employment to worry about. You know, like the the previous ombudsman. [Deadspin]

Sort of. It wasn’t as much he thought he wasn’t funny as he wouldn’t stop doing O.J. jokes on Weekend Update.

does espn need a ombudsmen when there are roughly a billion blogs pointing out even the smallest mistakes espn makes on a daily basis?

does espn need a ombudsmen when there are roughly a billion blogs pointing out even the smallest mistakes espn makes on a daily basis and ESPN demonstrates on a daily basis that they don’t give a flying fuck about anything the ombudsman says?

Do yourself a favor and go to the link in the Deadspin article that goes to Norm’s ESPY monologue. If you want to know why Ohlmeyer thinks MacDonald isn’t funny, wait until the last joke.

I think, since The Mag and website blow, that a “media” person is a better choice this time, whether it be Ohlmeyer or not. Print is dying, remember!!!

i was hoping it would be will leitch so we could see deadspin implode from all fellatio that would be going

Schreiber’s column was must read. As I said before, I have my doubts about a guy who once fired the funniest guy on SNL because he wouldn’t stop teasing his golf buddy. It has more to do with that than his general television background. I don’t trust people like that pontificating about media ethics.

Norm Macdonald is/was about as funny as watching paint dry.

i agree 100%

@JayV & mrejr: Wow, did you just get tired of his shtick or simply never found Norm funny?
June 17th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
Norm was definitely one of the most polarizing comedians around. Either you think he’s a genius or you hate the guy. I’m not interested in arguing whether he’s funny or not. I’m just saying that Ohlmeyer let personal issues and personal issues alone influence his decision. And that’s a bad choice for someone who’s about to be tabbed an ombudsman.

The only bad thing Norm Macdonald ever did was help contribute to artie lange’s career

“I got fired from here last year for not being funny. Now I’m back as the host. Which means I either got a lot funnier, or this show got a lot crappier.”

Hernia, you missed it:
starting on about Monday, a few people determined that EVERYONE and EVERYTHING sucks.
EVERYTHING! steroids? Lame!
football? he/they suck!
comedians? nobody’s funny!
movies? THEY ALL SUCK!

Norm = Genius.
Rumor: The movie “Rounders” was loosely based on Norm’s gambling.

I don’t think Norm has snob appeal like you suggest. I know I like him because he doesn’t have the traditional Larry the Cable Guy predictable punch lines to his jokes (or lack thereof). Don’t get me wrong, he’s predictable. You knew every Weekend Update would have “O.J. Killed Them,” “Germans Love David Hasselhoff,” “Madonna’s a Whore,” and various “crack whore” jokes, but they still made me laugh out loud every time. I don’t think that that kind of humor is “smart” by any stretch.
