NBA Draft: No. 9 Toronto Raptors
NBA Draft June 18th. 2009, 1:45pm
Trade Bosh?: He’s the face of the franchise. By far Toronto’s best player. But he wants to opt out next year. So do you risk losing him then for nothing, or do you try and trade him now? One would assume his value will be less at the All-Star break.
Buh-bye: SF Shawn Marion’s a free agent. So is SG Anthony Parker. Toss in Bosh and you could be looking at three new starters.
Needs: If Bosh stays, a SG and SF. Calderon is an above average PG, and Bargnani is coming off his best season as a pro, and he’s only going to be 24 in October.
The Pick: Likely candidates include Gerald Henderson, Tyreke Evans, DeMar DeRozan, and maybe Gonzaga’s Austin Daye.
Of the first three guys, we like Henderson as the best shooter, Evans as the best attacker, and DeRozan as the best athlete. Henderson’s probably the most-ready to step in and start, but Evans might have the most upside. Daye could give the Raptors the thinnest and most versitile frontline in the league (with Bosh and Bargnani).
Part of us thinks Daye might be a reach here, but he’s also intriguing because you’d now have three bigs that could either play inside or step out and hit a three.
We don’t think DeRozan or Evans will available here, and Daye’s still a bit soft for our liking. We’ll go with Duke’s Gerald Henderson.

I’m from Toronto, and I absolutely HATE the idea of Bosh as our franchise player. He’s a second-banana at best, maybe even a third. Of all the class of ‘03 guys, the furthest he’s managed to lead us is to the first round. That is not a “franchise” player. He is surrounded by a good amount of talent too. Teams would kill for guys like Parker (underrated), Calderon (one of the most efficient pg’s I’ve ever seen play), and even Bargs (who I believe will be better than Bosh and you can quote me on that).
I also think they’ll pick up that Gerald Henderson guy, simply because the team needs a slasher following Marion’s (assumed) departure. We got Evans to get rebounds now so our centre position is okay, finally.

Karma is right that Bosh is never going to be the #1 guy on a championship contender. Having said that, he would be a tremendous ’second banana’ on any team with a great perimeter player.
As for the talent that surrounds him, it’s super weak. Parker is inconsistent and can’t defend like he used to. Calderon is competent and doesn’t make too many mistakes but he is limited by the fact that he’s not quick enough to play the drive & kick game. He’s also a liability on the defensive end. Jury is out on Bargiani but I was encouraged by last season’s growth. Evans is a 12-18 minute role player who will do rebound and play defense.
My personal preference would be for them to blow it up and start over by moving Bosh and Calderon but that’s unlikely as the GM has a mandate to win now rather than rebuild. I hope Henderson is the guy if it comes down to a choic between him and DeRozan.

Meant to mention that the rest of the roster is terrible, hence the assessment that the talent around Bosh is ’super weak’.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Madness. Parker is mediocre at best. Calderon you can make disappear by physical play. Bargiani will be nice, but at best a second coming of dirk.
Bosh is like a poor man’s KG and will always be miles better than Andrea. Letting him go or not is a tough one, I for one love bosh’s game and think he’d be sweet in a pick and role offense. He’s gotten better every year he’s been in the league. Plus he can play amazing D when he’s not the only true option in an offense.
Toronto could use any player at any spot but PG and PF (if bosh stays). That being said, just go for a finished product. AFter the Joey Graham and Araujo busts I would like a finished product.

JP Loss-man is signing with the USFL. Great job Donohoe & Mularkey on picking a guy in the 1st round who isn’t one of the top 100 QB’s in the NFL

Pistons have been strong after Bosh for a while now. They also have thier eye on either Wade or CP3. Dumars fucked up the Darko draft, but he isn’t stupid no matter what Bill Simmons wants to think.

We’ll be back up next week, TC has finals this week, glenn is on business, and my boss told me to start doing work or I’m fired. We are having a meeting to sort this shit out this weekend. Thanks for the concern man.
I have real high hopes for us. My team needs to get in line first. I can’t carry us every day. How am I gonna knock TBL off the throne if I don;t get help…

agree – bosh is a solid #2, but he can’t be a #1
if im toronto, i deal him now, rather than wait for his value to drop at the AS break when they have to unload him
June 18th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Orl- Tor rumor going around down here
Hedo, Gortat, Alston for Bosh
June 18th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
then again .. how many franchise players are in the league? definitely not 30 – probably not even 15. you need a wingman or to be built like the pistons from a few years back with strong balance and defense.
bosh as a #2 … would probably be at or near the top of #2 players (better than gasol)
June 18th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
That deal would be great for both teams… Hedo a sign and trade Irish?
June 18th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
yep. same with Polish Hammer
Howard/Bosh/Lewis/C Lee or Air France/ Nelson looks pretty good to me
who knows. only a rumor but you never know
June 18th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
That would be a good trade for both teams. Hell I bet Hedo would really like toronto, fair bit of turks here. A front court of bosh, howard, and lewis would be pretty mental. Although how could they afford all three? Just let bosh walk after the year?
This is really it, there is only a few guys who can put a team on their back and win a game. CB4 is not one of those, but he has a very polished offensive game, and for a team with a couple options can be very productive on both ends. I think Colangelo should really try to convince him to stay. It should also be noted that CB has really busted his ass all these years up north. He hasn’t missed too many games and has improved every year in the league. Great asset for any team.

No way Bosh is a better franchise player than Gasol was in Memphis. Gasol led the Grizzlies to the playoffs (though he got swept) when the like of KG, Kobe & Shaq, and the Spurs were roaming the West.
Gasol is only 28…Bosh will continue to improve but he would not be better than Gasol at the moment. I don’t trust that guy’s game at all when I see him play.
Also, I actually like Parker. Given the right fit, I think he would play the Ariza role well for another team.
Also, I would take a guy like Calderon over the likes of Rafer Alston any day. Dude can straight up ball…his injury slowed him down last year, but when he’s healthy, he’s one of the most efficient guards in the league.
What I’m actually hoping for is that Rubio’s stock drops down (it won’t) and the Raptors grab him. That kid is going to be special IMO.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
@Irish: I would bet anything that you guys take another one of the point guards that WILL fall down to you, and with a team like that, another young quick position guard would do wonders for this team. I’m kinda excited for the magic to get Bosh now.
/Knicks are going out of their way to get tracy mcgrady, causing me supreme pain and anguish.

No way in hell the Magic trade Gortat.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
That is just flat out absurd. Bosh wishes he was the player Gasol is.
Really, TBL, you can’t seriously think Bosh is better than Gasol?

Alston will most likely be traded. Anthony Johnson picked up his player option so he will be back. ty lue is gone. We will need another PG
June 18th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
how do you know? he’s never been in that spot. what did gasol do before memphis? first round flameouts. bosh has been to the first round, too. and he has better stats. you put him next to wade and why couldnt they be thE East’s versino of Kobe/Gasol?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
CB’s problem is despite a pretty complete game (few post moves, great facing up, great range and jump shot for a PF) he has no real ‘goto’ move, can stuggle to get good post position against good defenders and he’s not athletically dominant. Hes a very polished and effcient player, and definitely does not have Gasol’s post game. Any team with a tough interior defender or that can committ to doubling will stop him from scoring in crunch time. Case in point, they still haven’t scrubbed out the blood stains on the ACC floor from what Howard did to bosh in the playoffs last year.
Yeah, if he had a great wing player like wade where it would be harder to double him and keep things a bit more spread out, it could def work as a kobe/gasol type thing.
Yeah, the sun is a rag, probably was The Star. Lots of turkish people in T.O. had a lot of turkish friends in high school. Great culture and food! Also, those motherfuckers do not play! Our starting strongside linebacker was 5′7″ 145 lb turk who just used to mash shit up! Guy was one of the toughest people I’ve met. Had a fierce unibrow.

Gortat is nice. Hope they dont trade him
