Bob Ryan’s Three Hard and Fast Steroid Truths
Baseball, Drugs, Media Gossip/Musings, Shady McShady June 19th. 2009, 12:30pm
When you read Bob Ryan’s latest column, don’t you feel get the sense he’s going to roll up to Ortiz at Fenway this weekend with either a cup seeking for a pee test, or ask the slugger what’s really in those “eye drops?”
1. All sluggers are suspect.
2. All Caribbean-based sluggers are doubly suspect.
3. All Dominican sluggers should be booked and read their Miranda rights.
Is he onto something with point #3? We went to Baseball Reference and pulled the Top 10 home run hitters from the Dominican.
1 Sammy Sosa - Alleged of PED use by the New York Times.
2 Manny Ramirez – Suspended for 50 games from baseball this season for failing drug test.
3 Vladimir Guerrero - Only connection so far is a trainer who worked with A-Roid and Tejada, among others.
4 Albert Pujols – Has repeatedly – and vehemently – denied cheating.
5 David Ortiz – Everyone, Red Sox fan or not, suspects him.
6 Alfonso Soriano – As of this moment, he hasn’t been linked to anything.
7 Miguel Tejada - Named in the Mitchell Report.
8 Raul Mondesi - Best years were in the 90s, and essentially has been a non-factor since ‘03. Could just be that he’s off everyone’s radar.
9 George Bell - Star in the 80s and early 90s, some writers should probably call him up
10 Aramis Ramirez – Wants all steroid users named! That’s going to look bad if he pops up on a list.

June 19th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
/obama’d?
June 19th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Hold on. I thought it was wrong to speculate about steriod users in baseball? Or does that just apply to blogs?

Who are the top 10 white HR hitters to start playing in the 80’s-current?
June 19th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
So Bob Ryan can performance enhance his face but David Ortiz can’t improve his ability to hit a baseball?
June 19th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

June 19th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

well i kinda see his point, juiced up dominican and carribean ball players are stilling jobs from juiced up homegrown white and black(read: upton brothers and andrew mccutchen) american ballplayers
June 19th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
3. All Dominican sluggers should be booked and read their Miranda rights.
This is the most racist thing I’ve read in a long damn time. (everyone together now: if he said that about black players, Jesse Jackson would be all over FoxNews by now. And rightfully so.)
June 19th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
stilling = stealing
/im a moron
June 19th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
You can easily make a similar list for any race in baseball. What a baseless/racist story by Bob Ryan. Pretty sure people have been fired for a lot less.
June 19th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
/fixed
Just stop at all players are suspect.
June 19th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
go to your corner for that low blow
There can be low blows?
June 19th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
To be fair to Ryan, Olney has brought this up several times as well. It’s not just the Dominican, Steroids are less culturally maligned in Latin American countries because they have, you know, big actual problems to worry about.
June 19th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
his excuses are two-fold 1. he is old 2. he is from boston. how coule we not see this? coming ecspecially from the guy who said he wanted to slap a woman on tv?
June 19th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
That’s racist.
That’s also racist.

If Pujols is clean, he’s arguably the greatest baseball player of our generation. I keep getting the feeling his name is gonna come up this summer. I keep getting the feeling Vlad and Poo-holes names are coming out eventually.

Bob Ryan is the Boogeyman! BWWWAAAHHHHH!!!!
A complete list of baseball players who have been suspended under Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program (since 2005):
Name Team Gms.
Alex Sanchez Rays 10
Jorge Piedra Rockies 10
A. Montero Rangers 10
Jamal Strong Mariners 10
Juan Rincon Twins 10
R. Betancourt Indians 10
R. Palmeiro Orioles 10
Ryan Franklin Mariners 10
Mike Morse Mariners 10
C. Almanzar Rangers 10
Felix Heredia Mets 10
Matt Lawton Yankees 10
Yusaku Iriki Mets 50
Jason Grimsley D-backs 50

Jose Guillen * Royals 15
Eliezer Alfonzo Giants 50
Henry Owens Marlins 50
J.C. Romero Phillies 50
Sergio Mitre Yankees 50
Manny Ramirez Dodgers 50
How he said what he said was wrong. Racist? Maybe.
What he SHOULD have said was basically that 90% of the players suspended for taking steroids were Latino, which means they’re just dumber than the other players, right??????
June 19th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Huh, a white, Irish guy from Boston with a head the size of a Winnebago said something that could be taken as racist. You wanna talk about color? Well, color me shocked.
June 19th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
That’s racist.
60% of the time, you’re right every time.

I am unclear on a couple of issues.
1. Where does the factual data come from in the Mitchell Report?
2. If somebody fails a drug test from 2002 but were never disciplined for it, then why does anybody care now? Is it only because he lied about it?
Until the MLB really does something about it and makes everybody take drug tests then the only thing that will keep happening is ruined reputations instead of improving the game of baseball. Plus, no more homeruns? I dont think the MLB will stand for that. Fans come for the long ball and that makes money. End of story!!

go phil
June 19th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
“That’s racist.”
It was supposed to be. Not to offend, just going for sarcasm.
June 19th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Go David Duval
June 19th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
This is the first time that I’m rooting for Phil. Probably be the last time, maybe if he doesn’t win this one I’ll root for him when he returns again.

Once again, I’ll say this: once you(the collective “you”) exhibit the same level of disgust and vitriol towards the NFL players that have tested positive, then I’ll take you seriously. Until then, take your phony outrage somewhere else.
