Ricky Barnes is 28 years old. Just 4 years ago he was the next big thing in golf. He finished 21st at the 2003 Masters as the low amateur and then he turned pro. He kind of disappeared after that. Now he’s leading the US Open at the halfway point after shooting rounds of 67 and 65.

The New York Times interviewed him after his strong Masters showing in 2003. They humanized the heck out of him.

”Just taking it easy, playing the field type of thing,” said Barnes, who had a steady girlfriend about a year ago. ”I’d love to meet a gal who would sweep me off my feet. I’m only human, you know.”

He’s friends with Natalie Gulbis – they both went to Arizona together.

He’s also got a temper. He was reprimanded and fined after the 2004 Australian Open.

Barnes, the 2002 US amateur champion who was once hailed as the next Arnold Palmer, was caught on television attacking a tree with his club during Saturday’s third round.

Then in Sunday’s final round, which he began only three shots off the lead, Barnes slammed his club into the ground after his first tee shot and remained in a bad temper as he shot a 78.

And that’s all we know about Ricky Barnes right now. I’m sure if he holds on to win this thing, we’ll find out a lot more about him. Like if he found his WAG or he still attacks plants. If I were him, I’d ask Gulbis if she wants to catch up after this.

Third round play resumes around noon. The final round should wrap up Monday morning. Weather permitting.
