Hasheem Thabeet Wants Nothing to Do with Memphis
1-liner, NBA Draft June 22nd. 2009, 10:45amHasheem Thabeet: He feigned injury (shoulder) and passed on a workout with the Grizzlies. Rubio wouldn’t work out for them, either. ESPN’s Chad Ford on the situation: “They don’t spend any money anymore. They don’t have a commitment to put a winning team on the floor right now. It’s not where an agent wants to send his star pick.” The only reason the Lakers have a title right now is because Memphis gave away Pau Gasol for nothing. Will the franchise treat OJ Mayo and Rudy Gay the same way before having to pay them? The pick here, no matter what agents are feeding Ford, has to be Thabeet. The Grizz have a point guard in 21-year-old Mike Conley. [ESPN Insider]

The Grizz have a point guard in 21-year-old Mike Conley.
^^
And…that means what? Conley is not exactly the second coming of Chris Paul. I’d rather have a number of players over Thabeet: Harden, Rubio, Curry…

If Blair can dominate Thabeet, what do you think Millsap or Jason Thompson will do to him. Let alone Amare, Boozer, or Bynum.

how do you know Rubio is going to be the 2nd coming of CP3? you spent a No. 3 pick on Conley … he started to come around late last season. you let one PG leave for overseas and you traded another (lowry).
not only would that be a setback, but you’re not drafting a need. this team is a mess inside with no rebounding. im a ‘need’ guy, hence thabeet

The Grizz are the Clippers without Billy Crystal.

I’m a BPA guy, and I’d draft Thabeet. He’ll be great.
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:02 am
Exactly. It’s amazing how good a PG can look if you have an All-Star-caliber PF and C like CP3 has in West and Chandler
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:03 am
Marc Gasol is not bad
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:04 am
hence Sam Bowie…
hence Darko Milicic…
Conley is not that good. I don’t see a frontcourt tandem of Thabeet and Marc Gasol being very formidable in any way shape or form.

Nick, what do you think of the Jamison rumors? I realize that wouldn’t solve the Cavs big man problems, and isnt the only move needed, but I’ve always loved Jamisons game.
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:13 am
You have that backwards. Chandler scores zero points a game without CP3 throwing up the oop and Paul creates space for West to hit his jumpshot. He makes them all-star caliber.

conley had 1 year at OSU (he was very good) and then has struggled because a) has no teammates, b) he’s still 21!!!!
give him a full season with the job and mayo/gay and let’s see what he’s made of.

coop- The Wiz say Jamison is not available

I love how every Cavs rumor gets a post on this site

11.7 ppg and 6.1 apg. He was pretty good but let’s not get too excited. I think he’s just undersized. They have him listed at 6′2″ but I think he’s only 6′0″.
He does have the quickness though. I just don’t think he’s a top five or ten NBA PG.
Thabeet reminds me too much of Greg Oden…

irish, just because they say he isn’t available doesnt mean much, especially since that deal was rumored before the trade deadline also. I agree that its pretty ridiculous how everyone from Shaq to Yao to Wilt is being pursued by the Cavs and it makes “news”.

old?
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:23 am
I know there’s a lot of DC folks that frequent this site. What the hell are the Wizards doing?
Why wouldn’t you make a guy like Jamison available. That franchise needs to break it up and start rebuilding. If they can find anyone to take Arenas’ contract, great. But that isn’t happening.
This Barnes guy is choking real bad.

@coop- dont forget about Scottie Pippen. maybe you haven’t heard that one
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:23 am
So give him one year with the teammates that he already had?
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:24 am
@LOSV – Defensively stout but offensively limited.
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:25 am
I would maybe put him in the 15-20 range.

@clown- still around? i thought you would like this shirt

@coop: Don’t think I want Jamison. He’d be fine if it were one year, but his contract sucks, and he’s already old.
@Souv: Conley was amazing at tOSU. Never turned it over, got to the rim with ease, played disgusting defense. He’ll be fine in Memphis. He’s already answered the one question I had for him, which was his 3 point shot (41% last year, which blew my mind). He’ll be just behind the big dogs (CP3, Deron, and that crew) in the 7-10 range with potential to be top 5-6.
Rudy Gay is nothing. I like Mayo. Gasol is a bit above average. That team blows.

If we were in the 90’s I’d like Thabeet a lot more. Mutumbo had great value because he was a guy that could guard Robinson, Olajuwon, Shaq, Mourning, Ewing, Malone and a little later, Duncan. There were even solid 2nd tier guys like Smits, Divac, Vin Baker (he used to be good, I swear), etc.
But now, Thabeet’s value (if he can stay on the floor) is going to come only occasionally against Howard and Yao while he mostly guards guys like Nick Collison and Spencer Hawes.
Of note, Memphis placed worse in the league on offense than they did on defense.
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:57 am
@NickP – Don’t you think a lot of that has to do with the guys he played with and the lack of competition in the Big Ten that year?
Granted Oden missed the non-conf portion of the season but c’mon…Conley is NOT a superstar. This is one of those places where stats aren’t going to measure it.
He’s a good player but he doesn’t have the skills that Williams, CP3 and other have. This might sound like a low blow because you’re a Cavs homer, but I’ll take Jameer Nelson over Conley all day.
June 22nd, 2009 at 12:00 pm
but I’ll take Jameer Nelson over Conley all day
i’d take Rafer Alston over Conley all day

yeah they should definitley waste a pick on someone who doesnt want to be there. thabeet doesnt want to be there? so what he has to play there if they pick him right? right? [phone ringing] uhuh yeah i heard of steve francis. uhuh you mean he wasnt drafted by the rockets but was drafted by vancouver/memphis grizzlies and refused to play for them and forced a trade? ok i gotta golater fuckface. [hangs up phone]

Conley played just as well in the tourney against non B-10 teams. He shot beter than Rudy Gay last year, who people seem to love (defies all logic).

Going BPA every stinking year – looking to sell jerseys instead of address weaknesses – is how the Grizz got as bad as they are. Frankly, if Thabeet is too iffy and and you don’t think you can sign (or move) Rubio, just draft Jordan Hill and be done with it, I say.
And in every other league that isn’t completely run by it’s marketing department, that’s exactly what a team like the Grizz would do.
