Didn’t ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit learn to play nice while at Ohio State? Between what you’re about to read and the Steve Breaston ‘worthless’ comments, you have to wonder if someone needs to check their ego.

A reader sent us a link to this Dec. 4 column in the St. Petersburg Times, where Herbie drilled an ESPN reporter on air:

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit took a swipe at one of his own, ESPN reporter Joe Schad. When talking about which coaches might fill various openings, Herbstreit said, “(According to) Joe Schad, every coach in the nation is up for some of these jobs. One of them will stick!”

We poked around the Worldwide Leader in an effort to ascertain why a wealthy, on-air personality would heartlessly slam a young reporter at his own network. Our sources say this isn’t the first time Herbstreit has taken a shot at one of ESPN’s intrepid team of college reporters, and Herbstreit has been told by higher-ups to apologize to Schad for his transgression. No clue whether or not that’s actually happened.

Man Herbie, what a letdown. We’ve long been a fan. And this year, because your star has risen meteorically at the network, suddenly, your shit don’t stink. How much gloating will we be forced to endure when OSU pounds Florida in the National Title game?
