The Wolves Gave the Keys of the Franchise to David Kahn, and Suddenly He’s Drunk with Power
NBA June 24th. 2009, 3:30pm
Since David Kahn narrowly beat out Bill Simmons for the coveted Minnesota Timberwolves GM position, here’s what’s happened on his watch:
* Gotten rid of coach Kevin McHale
* Tinkered with the idea of trading Al Jefferson (it was floated by the Suns, apparently; Kahn denied it)
* In what analysts are calling a weak draft, Kahn has acquired a 4th first-round pick (5, 6, 18, 28). The 5th pick cost him his best scoring guard (Foye) and his best shooter (Miller)
The last team that we can remember with four first-rounders was the 1999 Atlanta Hawks, and as Slam’s Lang Whitaker noted, it took them nine years to reach .500. Here’s a look back at that ‘99 draft for Atlanta:
10. Jason Terry, Arizona - Good scorer left for Dallas in 2004.
17. Cal Bowdler, ODU - An unbelievable bust who was out of the league in three years.
20. Dion Glover, Georgia Tech - Injury-riddled career, but showed signs of being a decent reserve toward the end of his days in Atl.
21. Jeff Foster, SW Texas State - Traded to Golden State; has carved out a nice career as a strong rebounder.
[Granted, 1999 was a weak draft, but the Hawks passed on Corey Maggette (13), Ron Artest (16), AK-47 (24), and Manu Ginobili (57).]
One would assume Kahn is working the phones to see what he can parlay the four picks into. Would the Grizzlies (2nd overall) bite if the 5th and 6th picks were dangled? Then, the T-Wolves could get Ricky Rubio to run point, and pick up a project like BJ Mullens at 18 or a guard like Jeff Teague/Toney Douglas and then grab a swingman with some experience (Budinger? Summers?) late in the first-round. Use the two second-rounders for SGs who can score (McClinton, Meeks, Ellington, etc).
How disgusting of an uphill climb is Kahn looking at? As of right now, one day prior to the draft, this is what his starting lineup looks like: Telfair at PG, Brewer at SG, Gomes/Smith at SF, Love at PF, Jefferson at C. Gross. That’s barely a 25-win team, and easily the worst-shooting team in the NBA. His bench consists of unimpressive big men who likely will become surly due to splinters (or get dealt) because none of them are stealing minutes from the franchise guys inside.
Good luck, guy.
David Kahn Is Going Loco! Adios, Foye And Miller! (Barkley’s Mouth)

Not quite the same, but the Bulls had 6 of the first 34 picks in the 200 draft and turned those picks into Fizer (3), Crawford (8), Bagaric (24), Guyton (32), Voskuhl (33), and El-Amin (34).
June 24th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Fizer went #4. Sorry.
June 24th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
if that’s not an epic fail, i dont know what is.
June 24th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
If he hits with the 5th and 6th picks thats actually not a terrible starting lineup, not terrible at all. But can anyone recall a time when one of these wholesale instant rebuilding with 2 or 3 young players worked? Good teams are better built by adding pieces slowly, as needs are identified.
June 24th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Katz, Kahn, what’s the difference?
June 24th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Kahn should send the 28th pick to Orlando for Rafer Alston
June 24th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Dwight Howard on Jimmy Fallon tonight
June 24th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Roll the dice my man. Minnesota sucked ass with Miller and Foye. This is all he could do. Picks 5, 6, 18, 28 is a great way to start. Add Thorton and K-Love(Who developed nice last season) You could have a hell of team. Now just get a coach who can mold and develop these guys and its the Portland Trailblazers.
This draft sucks because the Projections suck. Jordan Hill, Thabeet, and B.J Mullins are projected way too high. While guys like Terrance Williams, Dejan Summers and Jeff Teauge are mid to late first rounders. TO me this is a solid draft. Scouts are just basing this thing off Potential. That is what kills them in the end.
June 24th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
If Kahn doesn’t make this deal, the T-Wolves still are barely a 25-win team. Might as well put your own stamp on the team.
June 24th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Cleveland
June 24th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Love (15 and 10 post All-Star in less than 30mpg) and Jefferson is an excellent tandem to build around. It’s a better foundation than what Memphis and Sacramento are faced with.
If I can’t package these picks, I take Curry (worth the gamble with so many draft picks), the other remaining guard (Harden, Derozan, Evans, Rubio), Mullens (it’s a crappy draft, especially at this point, so it’s worth the gamble again) and then hope a guy like Sam YOung falls to the end of the 1st round.
June 24th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Doing something drastic with a losing franchise is drunk with power? Isn’t the biggest complaint about the NBA is that most front office people won’t make a big move to improve their team? He’s trying to shake up both his team and the city.
And Mike Miller sucks.
June 24th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
jamal crawford to the hawks?

ATL would have Joe Johnson and Crawford … that’s not a bad 1-2 backcourt in terms of scoring
June 24th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Spencer Im just fuckin with ya. That whole draft sucked dog nuts.

Speedy and Acie Law to the Warriors. Maybe the Hawks will take Rafer now

Isiah Thomas> TBL > NSR
June 24th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
the t-wolves probably now have 6 guys to play 2 positions. and no SGs, seeing as how Brewer hasn’t displayed any shooting ability so far in the NBA.
right now, they look like a plodding team … at a time when nba scoring is up, and teams are going to the 1-4 look.
yeah. brilliant.
i would sooner have given the 6th pick to DC for Butler
June 24th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
You sound like Mel Kiper with all of his “Wildcat Formation” Bullshit.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Why would that possibly be a consideration from Wash’s standpoint? Caron is awesome.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
How many teams do you think are going to move to the 1-4 look? 3? 4? There aren’t enough talented centers in the league to do that. And just to clarify, Orlando lost in 5 games.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
But in the 1-4 look that all of the teams are looking to do, aren’t there only two positions: post and perimeter?
June 24th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Butler would be the last guy DC would give up.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
And just to clarify, Orlando lost in 5 games.
and Phoenix still missed the playoffs
June 24th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
I would argue it is a weak draft because all of these guys have glaring holes in their game. There are plenty of guys that can’t shoot, evans, derozan, holiday, rubio. guys that are too small like harden, curry, flynn etc, bascially everyone has major flaws in there game.
I think you are better off sitting around the back end of this draft and finding a quality starter on the cheap. Sam Young is my favorite but guys like Derrick Brown, Summers could be steals and I love Heyvelt (sp?) ellington and green in the second round.
I think Derozan is going to be the biggest flop. The other two guys I think will bust based on their college games Johnson and Terrance Williams, I know guys love him but when people match his strength and quickness every night out and force him to shoot jumpers he will be in trouble.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Are you really taking that as an insult? I was using it as a point of reference that there might not be as big a rush to emulate Orlando’s offensive style. Bit testy, no?
June 24th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
not at all chief. i love reading your comments about basketball
June 24th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Me too. He is essentially K-Love.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
So you agree that teams aren’t going to emulate the team that was dominated in the finals by a clearly superior offense and coach and superstar?
June 24th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
I think his court vision will help him with that and we will not force shots.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
I agree there’s some value there. I’ll be surprised if Sam Young isn’t starting and producing by season’s end on a decent team. I also like DeMarre Carroll and Jeff Adrien (as a Powe/Millsap-type energy guy) as well.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
@Hef- why not? they made the Finals. had to be some recipe for success
June 24th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
This guy really wants Hakeem Nicks
June 24th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Hef, im all for you digging your heels in the sand to make an argument … that’s fun.
but here? where you work, when a new boss comes in and completely flips shit upside down … does anyone feel safe? what’s the mood? their backcourt right now consists of Kevin Ollie, Telfair, and Corey Brewer. really. adding rookies is an elixir? they’re going to suck something fierce, maybe for 2-3 years. by then, a new coach has come and gone, and the wolves are still loitering in the basement
June 24th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
As a Phoenix fan I’ll be the first to say that relying too heavily on the 3 point shot is a bad idea. We did it for four years and were beaten every year. I liked this Orlando team but I never thought they had a shot. That’s not a dig at you, if anything it’s a dig at my favorite basketball team’s consistent failure.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
You think I’m arguing for the sake of arguing? I’m arguing because I don’t think everyone’s going to run to the Magic store to buy into their offensive scheme. And when it comes to failing businesses like the TWolves, a shakeup is exactly what’s needed. They’re not going to win this year, but then again they weren’t going to win anyway. They might as well tear down and build for the future while Jefferson is young.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
We did it for four years and were beaten every year
but never made the Finals. You have told me before you liked the Magic. I know you weren’t trying to dig at me
June 24th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
I agree 100% on Adrien, I always thought he was the best inside presence on UConn.
I know I stated my opinion of Thabeet back during the tourney but I think his ceiling isn’t as great as everyone thinks, defensive presence yes, but do you really want a top 5 pick that can only block shots and rebound marginally well and has suspect post moves. The only plus to his offensive game is that he runs the court well for a 7-3 guy.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
The Magic made the Finals in the East. There’s a big difference between the East and the West (especially 3-4 years ago).
June 24th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

are the wolves doing a impression of a certain franchise known for sucking in biblical proportions?

The Magic made the Finals in the East
and took out the favorite on the way. you have to give them credit for “dominating” the Frauds from Cleveland
June 24th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
I do. I give them a ton of credit for beating Cleveland. I had a lot of fun watching them dismantle the Cavs. I especially enjoyed watching Nick and Spence pout like babies about it.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
i cant believe im the first one to do this
KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNN!
June 24th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
The Magic had a great year, but maybe other teams should hold off on jumping on an unproven strategy. I think the Magic are uniquely built with the pieces that they have, so trying to copy it would probably not be a great idea.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Jesus christ, mrejr, that article was cumbersome.
Couldn’t even finish it.
Simmons blows.

I have never given a shit about Bill Simmons, but after reading that article trashing my beloved Buffalo Braves, I now wish on him rectal cancer
June 24th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
@Nickp: yeah it was but after reading the list of complete failures by the clips i am going to say that the clips are the worst professional sports franchise in existence. and i am going to ask , is there a professional sports franchise asking to be contracted to put their fans out of their misery as much as the clips? i say no.
June 24th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
If Griffin’s knee blows out within the next three years, I wouldn’t be opposed to the NBA moving the Clippers to Seattle and renaming them the Sonics. And I like the Clippers too.
June 24th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Is anyone under the impression that Foye and Miller are any better than kind of, sort of useful? If they were, I would have thought some team that actually needs starting swing players would be the one to pay for them. Worst case scenario is they actually have to use the 5th pick and take a combo guard who has a much higher ceiling than Foye does. Thats not so bad.
June 24th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Do not agree. The good teams will emulate Orlando. They were the number 1 Def in the league. Teams that strive for this will be successful. The 1-4 type thing they do has more to do with personnel than anything else. When you have the best rebounder in the league and a horrible rebounding PF you may as well do it.
June 24th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
whoa. why are you minimizing the trip to the finals? what don’t you get about …
* winning game 7 in boston
* dominating (mostly) the Cavs for 6 games. the cavs, regardless of what you think about them, were the best defensive team, statistically last season, and they were overwhelmed by the Magic
just a hunch, but the David-Goliath theme could be at play here. Don’t have one of the league’s 5-10 franchise players? can’t be like Boston and rent 3 HOFs for a title? well, why not try to get 4 players who hang on the perimeter and bang 3s, and have one guy inside.
Bulls took Boston to 7 with this lineup (mostly): Gordon, Rose, Hinrich, Salmons, and pick-a-big. They were exciting. The 3 helped.
I’m not saying it’s a definite trend, but it certainly looks like it could be one.
i’m all for zigging when everyone else is zagging - hell, this site has lived off that for 3 years - but what the Wolves are doing RIGHT NOW seems insane.
