Yardwork: Memorable Night for Mariano, Chad Gaudin’s Chin and Bat Tricks
Baseball June 29th. 2009, 11:30am
Yanks 4, Mets 2: The Yanks swept the Subway Series against the injury-depleted Mets, who scored a total of three runs in the three game set and need to make a trade. Badly. Even Jerry Manuel said it’s a no-brainer. Mariano Rivera notched his 500th save and even got his first career RBI, working a bases loaded walk in the ninth off K-Rod of all people. Mike Francesa will be soaking in the glory all day this afternoon, and he was at Citi Field on Saturday night in front row seats, so I’m sure he’ll have something bad to say about their new park.
Padres 2, Rangers 0: Chad Gaudin and his Gossamer chin dominated. Through eight innings, the Rangers lineup managed just one hit while fanning nine times. Scott Hairston drove in both runs for San Diego.
Tigers 4, Astros 3: Brandon Inge smacked a two-out, two-run shot off José Valverde in the top of the ninth helping Detroit avoid the sweep. Russ Ortiz was impressive for Houston, going 7 1/3 innings and giving up two runs on six hits. Fernando Rodney is 17 for 17 in save opportunities, but for the life of him, he can’t put his hat on straight.
White Sox 6, Cubs 0: Chris Getz stole home! On the very next pitch, the always even-keeled Carlos Zambrano hit DeWayne Wise and was out of the game one batter later after walking Scott Podsednik. Not a good night for Big Z.
Phillies 5, Blue Jays 4: After losing four straight series, the Phillies took two of three in Toronto and Brad Lidge bounced back from an ugly appearance on Friday night, earning his first save since blowing two straight. He’s blown six on the season. Aaron Hill hit two home runs and has 19 on the season to go along with 56 RBI. We all saw that coming.
Braves 2, Red Sox 1: Rookie Tommy Hanson improved to 4-0, pitching rather flawlessly, going six innings and allowing just two hits. Hanson beat the Yankees last week, which is impressive since New York and Boston are the only two good teams in all of baseball. Chipper Jones and Garret Anderson both went deep for Atlanta.
Royals 3, Pirates 2: Greinke got his 10th win, but the Halladay cronies (he’s hurt but still has 10 wins) will dismiss it since it came against the Pirates. His ERA is 1.95.
Jim Leyritz’s signature bat spin at the plate isn’t so interesting after seeing this:

bigben – Here’s the rotation for the next few years: Lowe, Jurrjens, Hanson, Medlen, Kawakami. Maybe Hudson instead of Kawakami, if the team picks up his option. That’s some depth right there. Now, if we had some guys that could hit…

TB 5 Marlins 2
fastest team evah to reach 100 hrs and 100 steals

and still in 3rd.

Hudson would be necessary, or another signing. Kawakami scares the shit out of me when he’s on the mound. That with the projected bullpen would make it one of the top staffs around.

I agree somewhat, but put it in context. He’ll be the fifth starter. Also, Hudson’s coming off of Tommy John surgery. If he doesn’t automatically qualify for the option year, he might not be around.

@jpq: That was amazing. They don’t make drugs like they used to.

ha ha, the pirates stink. that 1.95 era rose thanks to the lowly pirates. they played greinke better than the superior AL, and had a winning interleague record to boot.h
June 29th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
You should check out the stats on the Pirates before you scoff at the fact that Greinke shut them down. They are 11th in BA, 21 SLG, 15 OBP, 18 in SB, etc. I could go on and show you that this team may not win a WS or be very exciting to watch, but as far as hitting goes, they are middle of the pack.
June 29th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
The blown save statistic is not even an official MLB stat and it is beyond stupid.
June 29th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
hint: the save stat is dumb too.

Please re-read what I wrote before you start throwing your Johnny Ray cards at me:
“but the Halladay cronies will dismiss it since it came against the Pirates.”

I was speaking to the commenters.

Oops, my bad. I will now suplex myself.

If Roy Halladay beat a D-III college team, I’d still be impressed. He’s a fucking horse.
