NFL List Week: 5 Best Receivers in Football
NFL June 29th. 2009, 1:00pm
Sat around boozing Saturday in Chicago with an old friend and a former NFL draft pick (no longer in the league). We attempted to compile a list of the five best WRs in the NFL. Since we could not find a compromise on the fifth player, figured toss it out here to see if a consensus could be reached:
* Randy Moss of the Patriots
* Andre Johnson of the Texans
* Larry Fitzgerald of the Cards
* Anquan Boldin of the Cards
Plenty of names in the hopper for the 5th choice. Indy’s Reggie Wayne received the strongest support. There was some discussion of Denver’s Brandon Marshall. Cleveland’s Braylon Edwards was briefly mentioned. Calvin Johnson of the Lions has the raw talent, and might be there one day, but it’d help him if he had a QB. Hines Ward of Pittsburgh is past his prime, but because he does everything well, he was considered.
Greg Jennings of Green Bay was not part of the discussion, but perhaps if we were talking with the Packers’ front office, he might have been - did you see how much money they gave that guy? Probably not receiving as much credit as he deserves: New England’s Wes Welker, who was tied for 1st in receptions in 2007, and 2nd in 2008. For a moment, we lobbied for Plaxico Burress, but his lack of speed and penchant for laziness overshadowed his hands and red zone dominance.
A name that, in hindsight, should have been right there with Wayne for the 5th spot: Carolina’s Steve Smith.
Not anywhere near the discussion: Chad Ochocinco, Terrell Owens.

Reggie Wayne
Andre Johnson
Randy Moss
Larry Fitz
TO

Calvin Johnson is better then all of those on your list, right now, other than Fitz. True story.

Dwayne Bowe enters the discussion this year
/Todd Haley’d
June 29th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
I’d get Boldin the fuck off that list personally.
Steve Smith is better than him by a nice margin.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
I love watching Wes Welker, but he probably benefits from having superior receivers draw coverage away from him.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
1. Fitzgerald
2. Moss
3. other
June 29th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Moss
Fitz
Wayne
A. Johnson
C. Johnson
Smith is too streaky, lets see what Marshall does without Cutler, White put up some good numbers last year. Boldin is great, but how much of his stats are good because of Larry?
June 29th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Is there a tougher receiver going over the middle than boldin?
among the elite receivers, he’s also one of the fastest. prick? sure.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
/truth’d indeed.
seriously, what more do you need from the guy to put him in that list of right now. why does one need a big resume? he is better than most of them. otherwise, TO should most definitely be on your list.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Fastest? I’d wager he’s among the slowest elite receivers in the game.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Dwayne Bowe enters the discussion this year
/Todd Haley’d
Maybe, but he has hands like Roberto Duran which isn’t good if it is your job to catch passes.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
1. Fitzgerald
2. A. Johnson
3. Wayne
4. Moss
5. Megatron
June 29th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
He had a hell of a rookie season. I think the question could go both ways.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

/Jerry Jones’d
June 29th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
yes…brandon marshall.
1. moss (easy)
2. fitz
3. andre johnson
4. megatron
5. reggie wayne
braylon edwards has the talent to be in the discussion as long as he fixes his stone hands, which is quite possible.
hines ward isn’t in the discussion. not now, not ever. cheap crackbacks and getting first downs aren’t what no. 1 WR’s are supposed to do. he’s a no. 2 and always has been.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Expect Santonio Holmes to have a breakout season
June 29th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Except for Larry, most of the guys mentioned are pretty much a prick.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
I call shaninigans.
And Calvin Johnson has the potential to be the best receiver in the league by a wide margin- just throw the ball in his direction and he wins.

Marques Colston is at worst in the second five
/when healthy

June 29th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Marques Colston is overrated because Brees is still underrated.
/now that’s a true story
June 29th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
He is the truth. But if it were that easy, they would have won like, you know, one game.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
I think you have to go with Reggie Wayne here.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
@spencer: you mistake his “cheap” crackbacks for him playing hard. Just because almost every other receiver doesn’t go hard every play doesn’t mean you should talk smack on him. He has had that rep for YEARS and yet doesn’t get called for it… why?… because it is 100% within the framework of the rules.
Overall… Fitz makes every other receiver look like a joke with his combination of production, effort, and attitude.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Hands down Steve Smith in the top 5. Not surprised he still gets overlooked though
June 29th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Reggie Ball was the worst QB in D-1 and he could still complete passes to him.
/god i hated reggie ball
June 29th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
/just sayin’
June 29th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
1. Fitz
2. Moss
3. Andre Johnson
4. Steve Smith
5. Megatron
Close (in this order): Wayne, Boldin, Marshall, TO, Jennings, Roddy, Colston
June 29th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
I hate lists. Andre Johnson, Fitz, and Moss, then everyone else.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Expect TBL to break out the dong photo 3 or 4 times this season.
/true story

Wayne
June 29th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
We’ll see about Wayne this year
/when the shutdown corner isn’t covering Marvin
I’ll always remember that game in Denver when he threw like 9 passes in a row to him on the final drive, because Champ Bailey was on Harrison

Because I’m an optimistic 49ers fan: Michael Crabtree! Now if he can only start running…
June 29th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
MATTRYAN,
Colston has 3000 receiving yards and 32 starts. He’s a 1,400 yard guy if he could ever stay on the field a whole season, or even a complete game.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Marques Colston is at worst in the second five
/when healthy
//stay healthy, damnit!
That’s okay. We got Robert Meachem.
/goes to corner to cry
June 29th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
correct
so does usain bolt
June 29th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
KC Resident,
I guess Bowe stopped wearing his contact lenses. I don’t remember his exact timeline, but I believe he dropped everything his junior (or sophomore?) season. Then somebody discovered he had something like 20/200 vision. And then once he got that corrected, he caught everything in sight.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
It might not be nothin, but I swear there’s a guy with a gun that looks just like Marvin Harrison just down the street from where you live TBL.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Agreed.
among the elite receivers, he’s also one of the fastest. prick? sure. Actually he is considered slower for a receiver. He breaks a lot of tackles and therefore has a lot of long runs so it looks like he is always running by guys but he actually has just run through them and then is off to the races.
As for him being a prick, come on TBL. This guy had one episode last year. Aside from that, his team lied to him the previous year promising to redo his deal. Then they said they wouldn’t. he begged for a new deal/trade. When it didn’t come he said he wouldn’t be a distraction and would shut up and play football. I sang his praises all year for that because he didn’t say one word all season, absolutely shredded on the field, got knocked out cold and came back and played with his jaw wired shut. I wouldn’t call him a prick for one 30 second argument he got into with his O.C.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
he’s a bitch and you know it. by “playing hard” do you mean being to big of a bitch to take on defenders head on so he resorts to waiting until they’re not looking?
and he’s a WR, not a guard…blocking doesn’t come into the equation for no. 1 WR’s.
and as a RECEIVER, he’s a good possession WR, nothing more.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Looking at this list and the suggestions in the comments made me realize WR’s must be drastically overrated, because only one of the WR’s in the concensus Top 10 or (Fitz, Moss, Boldin, Wayne, Megatron, S. Smith, Jennings, C. Johnson, A. Johnson and Marshall) has a Super Bowl ring.
/fwiw
June 29th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
Hakeem Nicks
June 29th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Spence, I understand if you don’t think he’s an elite receiver, but you have to agree 800 career catches, 10,000+ yards (he’ll get there this year) and 72 TDs in 11 seasons, while playing in one of the few remaining run-first offenses, is above and beyond a mere possession receiver.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
I agree to an extent, but then I remember that the Cardinals are still a 5-11 team without Fitz.
And the only thing keeping Moss from a ring are Gary Anderson and David Tyree.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
If I told you a receiver was 20th in the league in receptions, fifth in yards, sixth in yards per catch, seventh in yards per game, and tied for first in touchdowns, where would you rank that guy?
June 29th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
that minny team was unreal
June 29th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
I have no idea what makes you think this…I’d wager he’s in the bottom third of receivers, speed-wise.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Andre Johnson and Fitz at the top (with AJ slightly better but with far less hype). Both have the best combination of skills. Megatron is almost there, and there’s a significant drop-off after the top three (Smith, White, Boldin, Moss, etc).
June 29th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
ftw!!!
June 29th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
R. White
Boldin
A. Johnson
C. Johnson
Fitz
June 29th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
fine…i’ll give you that. he’s a DAMN GOOD possession WR.
but he’s still a logwasher.
June 29th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
In no particular order …
Randy Moss
Reggie Wayne
Larry Fitzgerald
Steve Smith
Wes Welker In Very Hard Decision Over Anquan Boldin
June 29th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
bigben, I hope for your sake that your list is in no particular order, and second of all, Roddy doesn’t belong in the top five. I will entertain top ten arguments, but no better than that. FWIW, here are mine in order:
1. Fitz
2. Randy Dandy
3. A. Johnson
4. Megatron
5. Wayne
June 29th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
I heard D-Bow is out of shape and a disappointment right now. Get that guy on a diet and hell be ready for Sundays.
Fitzgerald
Andre Johnson
Randy Moss
Chuck Johnson
Steve Smith
June 29th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
you’re joking right?
we’re talking NO. 1 WR’s here, not cute little slot guys that are a product of their environment. id love to see how welker would do as a no. 1 without moss keeping safeties 25 yards deep right off the bat.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
JJ Stokes was pretty breathtaking to watch, but I see this is an active Top 5 list.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Antonio Bryant anyone?
June 29th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Who knew Paolo was Bill Simmons?
June 29th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
June 29th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Fitz
Moss
Steve Smith
Magatron
Andre Johnson
Smith’s number 2 left carolina and he is still commands double teams. Did I mention that he is shorter than most running backs in this league. But good list, should have saved it for Friday!!!!
June 29th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Correct.
And Robby White is a homer pick, but get the F out of here if you believe a top ten is questionable. 2008:
-4th in yards
-5th YPG
June 29th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
well i didnt clock him when he took that short pass and went the distance against hte Falcons in the playoffs … but he looks fast to me. someone can probably find the stats about him taking short passes and going for long scores.
remember, he’s playing 2nd fiddle to fitz, too. you put him on ATL in place of Roddy White and Bolding is putting up monster stats

Any top 5 list without Calvin Johnson is a joke. He had ZERO help last year and an awful QB situation and still put up as good numbers as anyone.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Hilarious anecdote, given that poor vision should be sorted in about one week of lectures.
If you’re going to dock boldin for being a douche, do recall that Steve Smith has sucker punched a team mate, breaking his eye orbital, while the guy was on one knee. Guy is king douche.

Ben’s two rings would like to have a word with you.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
nope. that is why teams weren’t willing to offer the cards very much for him. nobody offered #1 pick.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm

June 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Calvin Johnson
Andre Johnson
Fitz
Moss
Wayne
June 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
I’m gonna come back to this because it’s ridiculous. 20th in the league in receptions, fifth in yards, sixth in yards per catch, seventh in yards per game, and tied for first in touchdowns. That’s Megatron from last season. Unreal. The only worthwhile player on an 0-16 team, and has guys like Dan Orlovsky throwing him the ball. Fitz is the real deal, but I’m willing to bet his numbers take a hit without a really good quarterback (which Warner is).
June 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Guy’s a beast, seriously. He is better at every aspect of being a receiver except team/QB help.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
pit’s D and running game would like to have a word with big ben for claiming those two rings as his.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
How many times are we going to have to go over how illogical the “rings argument” is with a team sport like football.
Do I have to go all Marino> with this?
Roethlisberger’s QB rating of 22.6 in Super Bowl XL is lowest rating of a winning quarterback in Super Bowl history. Real stud.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
I don’t know about the full top 5, but anyone who doesn’t have Andre Johnson in their top 5 has zero credibility.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Wheels beat me to it, but feel free to come back in a few years with a couple rings. Hell, Roeth’s rookie season was even better in terms of W-L (and don’t forget that team was 6-10 the year before) and he reached the conf. championship.
That being said, Ryan looks absolutely solid as an NFL QB.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Ben’s two rings would like to have a word with you.
Trent Dilfer has 1 less than The Hood Ornament.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
You think Marino would trade in those gaudy stats for two rings? I think so. Roeth sucked balls in the first Super Bowl, but if you say that his D and run game won him the second, you didn’t watch the game. He did everything he needed to, to let his team win. If you don’t think all those great Raven’s defenses the past five years wouldn’t have killed for a QB like Ben, you are crazy. He does what he needs to, to win.
I also agree with Roethlishotdog. Ryan will be a solid pro, but I just don’t understand the Ben hate.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
except for that whole snap count thing.
na, he’s good.
flacco on the other hand? dogshit.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
he’s a douchebag who isn’t a good QB…what more is there?
June 29th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
you know who sucks?
Jerricho Cockery
June 29th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
No Chance.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Why not? Isn’t that why they play the game. To win? Maybe I’m just wired differently.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
This misses the point to say the least. Does Marino need to trade the stats for the rings to say he’s better? That’s the question, and the answer is no.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
who said anything about brady quinn or the team i support?
we’re talking about big ben here…stay on topic.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I would never argue that Big Ben is better than Marino. That’s foolish, but what I would argue is that you can’t discredit him because he won two rings. That’s crazy. Sure he sucked ass the first one, but didn’t he do enough to get his team there in the first place? Doesn’t that count for something.
I’m just saying, that I would take two rings over great stats and no rings, and I think the majority of players would say the same thing. Maybe I’m naive in thinking so.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I hate Pitt, therefore I hate Ben. He’s guilty by association. Plus the argument is always classic when a “Ben sucks” is thrown out.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
We got off topic when Ben got brought up in the first place. I just think it’s funny that you say that you don’t like him because he’s just a douche bag. At least bigben_wishhewas_MATTRYAN says he doesn’t like him because he hates his team. I can roll with that.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Don’t confuse hate for jealousy
/city of champions’d
June 29th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Sure you can. And I just did. His TEAM is great, but he is not important. A better QB may actually allow that poor D to take a rest every now and then.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
A certain golf fanatic hates Big Ben more than ever after that 81 at Beth Page, from the pro tees. (speaking of, did anybody hear him knock Tony Homo on PTI just before the open?)
Roethlisberger is pretty hard to knock at this stage, since he played so well last year, and behind that not so hot O line.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
wheels…but you knew i was a browns fan. hating pit should’ve been assumed.
and i don’t like him because he takes way too many sacks, isn’t that good yet gets talked about like a GAWD.
bradshaw sucked too, and if it weren’t for joe namath, he’d be the worst HoF QB. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RINGS!?!?!?!?
June 29th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Hines is a bitch? Safties kill wideouts all the time when they are looking for the ball or going over the middle. To think a WR is cheap becuase he enacts some legal revenge is horse shit.
/long time poster, first time poster. I will hang up and listen to your thoughts.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
You just made my point. He is important. How can a guy touch the ball more than anyone else, and not be important. He may not be great statistically speaking, but he gets shit done. That’s my point. You can’t win two Super Bowls and not have a competent QB. You can get on a great roll and win one, but not two.
June 29th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
now that was impressive. i’ll give him that much without any backhanded compliments or criticism at all.
actually there is just one criticism…his swing is ugly. but golf isn’t about “how” it’s about “how many.”

so? you tackle the guy with the ball. that’s the point of playing defense.
what’s the only logical thing to do when you have a shitty OL? of course!!! hold onto the ball even longer!!!
June 29th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Spencer - speaking of golf, have you had the chance to play the Quarry yet in East Canton? If not, it gets my recommendation… take the time to get down there and play that course.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
now that was impressive. i’ll give him that much without any backhanded compliments or criticism at all.
Not even that he had a pro for a caddy? Or that he had a drop at one point, and he held the ball for 15 seconds too long?
June 29th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Touche. Obviously I’m a Steelers guy. He’s definitely not a God, but I’d take him over 3/4 of the league’s starting guys right now. I can understand the hate as a Brown’s guy. I feel the same way about the Ravens and Ray Lewis. You want to talk about a guy that’s overrated. He jumps on the piles after tackles are being made, but still somehow has the announcers on their knees, washing up his balls.
/slow day at work’d and opening up another can of worms
June 29th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
second by default…flacco sucks, anderson sucks, quinn sucks.
id take a healthy palmer over big ben any day.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
To think a WR is cheap becuase he enacts some legal revenge is horse shit.
/long time poster, first time poster. I will hang up and listen to your thoughts.
First, that revenge is no longer legal. There’s the Hines Ward rule now.
Second, you blew your closing remark. Nice try though.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
i may hate ray lewis, but i wouldn’t call him overrated. what he does in terms of positioning and getting his team in line is invaluable. it’s what a MLB should be doing.
tackles are a gay stat anyways…the colts issued something like 750 tackles on only 450 defensive plays, so who cares about that? i’d take ray murda on my team any day.
if you wanna talk overrated ravens…the discussion begins and ends with flacco. have you heard a bad thing written about him? the dude is FUCKING TERRIBLE.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
Ray Lewis > all Shitsburgh Steelers LBs
June 29th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
I especially love when Bens 22 QB rating in the first SB is brought out. It conveniently ignores 3 spectacular playoff games leading up to that game:
@ CIN 14 of 19 for 208 yards 3 TDs 0 INTS 148.7 Rating
@ IND 14 of 24 for 197 yards 2 TDs 1 INTS 95.3 Rating, 1 shoestring tackle
@ DEN 21 of 29 for 295 yards 2 TDs 0 INTS 125 Rating
Did the 23 year old have a bad SB, sure, but 90 yards with 2 min left last year made up for it.

Lewis is good. He threw a temper tantrum three years ago, near the draft and got them to focus on making the defense good again. They drafted Hala Ngoti. That’s the last negative press he’s gotten. And it was undeserved.
Flacco sucks, but he’s not asked to do too much. I love the Ravens, on offense, with a lead. It’s beautiful to watch.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Ed Reed > Troy P
June 29th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Stupid facts. What good are they anyway when I know he’s good in my heart?

mcclain is UNDERRATED as hell. dude is a fucking battering ram.
watched a replay of one of the steelers ravens games from last year…jesus christ. none of us would make it off that field alive. those games are must-see for football fans.
troof.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
/that’s a bannin’
You can’t ban the new guys. They provide the fodder.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Ed Reed is the lone guy I like on the Ravens, but he’s not > thatn Polamalu. They are two different players playing the same position. Polamalu is a run stuffer, and Reed is a ball hawk. I’d go with Reed = Polamalu.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Lot of Steeler jealousy here.
Coop is right on. Ben had a crappy superbowl but his play got them there. Let’s be honest Pitt has had good runnig teams and solid D for years but it took ben to get over the hump and win in the post-season.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I’d go with Reed = Polamalu
nah
June 29th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
I’m just giving him shit because I know him.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
polamalu looks like a used tampon.
and reed is better. but polamalu did embarass flacco in the AFC champ game which made me giddy with glee.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
Reed > any defensive player
June 29th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
jealous of a bunch of toothless, meth addicted, cousin fucking hillbillies?
na.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Ed Reed brings the pain, in addition to being a ballhawk.
Troy P is a ballhawk in his own right.
Based on last year, though, and how everybody in the whole world watched Ed Reed singlehandedly win two or three games for the Ravens, i’ll go Ed Reed.
Unless we’re talking about speaking intelligible English. The it’s Troy P.

Shit, my first post and I end up getting served. Woe is me. Couldnt agree more about missing football. Maybe the powers that be will take notice that there are 132 comments here and 8 about some kid who played basketball in Europe becuase he couldnt score 800 on his SAT.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
no fucking way.
the closer you are to the ball, the more important you are.
haynesworth (unless he gets lazy from his fat new contract), ty warren, merriman, james harrison, demarcus ware, t-suggs and shaun rogers are all more important.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Ryan as a rookie 16-11. Ben as a rookie 17-11.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
False. Good all-around coaching in each helped the D get there.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Ronde Barber>Reed/Polamalu
June 29th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
I’ll bet Haynesworth already weighs 400 lbs. That contract had 41 million guaranteed dollars. The best contract Tennessee even considered wasn’t even 41 million fake dollars.
You know he’s going to get lazy.

June 29th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
dirt…yea, that’s what im worried about.
but the last two seasons, he was so fucking good…
June 29th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
oh, and I promise you. Hala Ngoti is as valuable as any of those guys, except Shaun Rogers, who didn’t belong in that sentence. He’s a pussy and a crybaby.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
true story…ngata is good.
fuck that shit about rogers…he was a fucking beast last year and you know this.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
I dunno Dirt. D-Ware might be a tad more important to his team.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
So suddenly Bill Cower became a good coach?
You’re right it must have been the defense that threw 7 TD’s and made a season saving tackle against the Colts in the 2nd round.
Cower was the coach when Neil O’Donnell, Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox were the QB’s. Those teams had good defenses and solid running games but didn’t win. Hell O’Donnell gave away Super Bowl XXX on his own.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
That’s the thing - they DON’T play the same position (a fullback and a tailback aren’t both running backs). One’s a SS, the other’s a FS. They’re asked to do 2 different things for their teams, and they’re both fan-fucking tastic at it.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
but the last two seasons, he was so fucking good…
both contract years. The season prior he was really good too, except he stomped Andre Gurode’s head open. He needs to need, or he’s full of behavioral problems. I have low expectations for that guy in Washington.
Plus, nobody plays hard in Washington.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
This is rich coming from a Steeler guy. According to Steeler fans and the media, they should’ve renamed the Lombardi trophy after him. I admire your attempt to have it both ways, though.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
I dunno Dirt. D-Ware might be a tad more important to his team.
Best player in the whole league. Utterly unblockable. Love him to death..
however…
if you can occupy 2/3 blockers and let Ray Lewis run free - yikes. That’s valuable.
I was fucking with you Spencer. The Shaun Rogers deal last year was a great deal for Cleveland, and he played great for them. He was a little out of shape, even for that shape, though.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
True story.
@FloridaSteel, exactly. Ben took Cower’s career from pretty good to great.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
I really have a hard time with that dude’s name. Halata Ngoti. I always want it to be Hala.
Anyway, he’s worth 40 million, too.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
ngata is a straight up thug tho. the dude fights with everyone.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Ha! Cowher probably gave him a huge thanks for a memorable Super Bowl performance.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Do Steeler fans have an inside joke about not spelling Cowher right?
June 29th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Never said Cower was a great coach…infact what I said was it took Ben to get over the hump and win in the post-season.
The media still wants to change the name of the league from the NFL to the Bill Bella-cheat league. Th genius invented the game don’t you know. As far as the trophy, ESPN would have you think it’s the Tom Brady trophy.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Agreed.
He did have a great postseason. Wait…
June 29th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
He is a Raven. They all fight with everyone. All they do is fight.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Havent heard that in almost 50 comments, please see 121 for explanation.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Best coach in the NFL in the last 10 years? Shanahan. He could take bigben…MATTRYAN and spencer and turn them into 1,000 yard backs. He was shit for the front office, but his offensive scheme just flat works.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Do Steeler fans have an inside joke about not spelling Cowher right?
When you choose the Hurricanes over the Pens you lose an H. Standard procedure.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Yeah, he did some good things for them. The two rings are big, and he certainly didn’t hurt them in those two postseasons overall. But the fact of the matter is that he is not an elite QB. His importance is minimized because of their offensive style and elite D, and he still makes way too many mistakes. Then media fawns over him likes he’s elite. It’s the same phenomenon as with LBJ, but more vehement because LBJ is at the very least top-2.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
shanny is my favorite, but lets not sell belichick short now…
hate the dude, but cheaty mccheaterson is paul brown/bill walsh level tits.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Best coach in the NFL in the last 10 years? Shanahan. He could take bigben…MATTRYAN and spencer and turn them into 1,000 yard backs. He was shit for the front office, but his offensive scheme just flat works.
I think Denver won one playoff game in the last 10 years under Shanahan. So i’ll politely disagree.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
So you agree that they won that Super Bowl in spite of Big Ben’s play. I’m glad we can agree.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Don’t forget he was shopping for all the groceries, which he sucked at. Personnel wise he sucked ass. Scheme wise he’s a genius. He’s gonna look like it again when he’s coaching Barber, Jones, and Choice next year.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
U of Oregon in the house. Seriously getting to watch that guy up close for three years was the shit. He was a monster, just tearing up three blockers at once. And he’s so agile that BAL will stand him up at times. Damn.
Well if that’s who you’re comparing him to then I guess he’s all-world. He’s not actively bad, like those tools, but he is not very far above average either. He’s good enough, but that doesn’t make him good.
June 29th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
yea, but with that shit roster (that he admittedly put together)?
his coaching overcame his own management shittiness. plus, his offensive scheme was so fucking good…
June 29th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
Shanahan has proven to be incredibly mediocre since Elway left.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
My exact thoughts.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
He’s a one side of the ball guy, so if you want to talk about one side of the ball guys, Tom Moore can enter your best coach of the last 10 years conversation.
The answer is Belichick, and Shanny loses.
As for Shanny in Dallas, I don’t know. I think Jerry Jones was hoping somebody last offseason still thought Jason Garrett was a genius, and was willing to hire him away, but nobody did.
Dallas needs to get a fullback and run two tight end sets all the time. That’s by far and away their best lineup. Save Barber to run the clock out, as much as you can.
If this list were worst 5 receivers in football, Patrick Crayton would be the tops.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
I agree with that.

Billy Mays, new celebrity spokesman for Lipitor, did not die because he had a bruise on his brain.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
with that OL? absolutely. them some BIG hosses up front in dallas.
worst WR’s in the NFL? id have to say dennis northcutt is on there.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Lefty, don’t even get me started on Peyton Manning. I am not a Colts fan, but man do I love me some Peyton Manning. I’d paint that dude’s house. He really is a wonderful football player.
If the Cowboys knew what they were doing, they could rush for 3000 yards next year. But they’ll probably throw it 500 times instead. Fuckers.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
I’d throw it four times a game if I was in charge in Dallas. Garrett’s insane.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
To be fair that has been their primary formation they have been practicing in training camps thus far. Marty B is going to see a lot more time opposite witten.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
fuck yea.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
If that’s true, then they’ll win the NFC. Football is that easy. Get the ball, ram it down your opponent’s throat, run the clock out.
I have reservations about another season of Big Flo at left tackle. That’s my biggest concern. That, and stopping the run with Jay Ratliff playing nose guard.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Oh yeah. I hate the ‘Boys (Philly Fan) but it’s almost painful to see them waste all this talent the last couple years. It would be cool to see them pound it, I love the running game and they could pull it off.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
First good football post in 3 months and I miss it, damnit!
God I love how NBA posts morph into Kobe v LeBron and football posts morph into Steelers are the AIDS plague on society (which they are)
My Top 5:
1. T.O.
2. Lee Evans
3. Josh Reed
4. Roscoe Parrish
5. Whoever the Bills 5th WR is
/homer’d
For Real:
1. Andre Johnson
2. Fitzgerald
3. Moss (for the 8 games he tries)
4. T.O. (for the years like this year when he will shut up and play)
5. Chad (I hate him, but I think he’s gonna be a beast this year)
* Calvin Johnson, but I’ve never seen him play other than at GT
** I also like Greg Jennings, but he gets no love anywhere
June 29th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
jpq - If Megatron was on an even halfway decent team, he’d be top two in the league, and probably top one. He’s way way way better than Chad Javon Ochocinco.

//still true

I dont even know how it happens, its never the actual steeler fans, but people just start hating and then we are forced to defend greatness.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
younglefty: really don’t disagree w/ that, but like I said, I have never seen one second of him in a Lions uni. I HATE Johnson more than almost any guy in the league, but something tells me he is gonna bring it this year. Actually, I hope I’m wrong, because I don’t want to see him get paid-lol
June 29th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Just to keep with the general theme of things.
June 29th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
As a cowboys fan it is much more painful. I can remember one game last year where they actually pounded it. It was the Washington game in Washington. They ran out like the final 8 minutes just rushing.

** Right at the top the post says 5 Best Receivers In Football. It does not say Best No. 1 Deep Threats, Slickest Receivers, If They Did Not Have A Good Quarterback, Fastest Receivers, and quite a few others designations that too many douchebags, starting with Spencer again, transformed this list into something else …TBL Godfather comes up with a great idea for a post again, but then too many douchebags here end up trying to transform it into something else!
Go get your own blog if you want to make a different list than what it says at the time you fuckin’ losers!
