The New Over-the-Hill in Baseball: 33
1-liner, Baseball June 30th. 2009, 2:30pm33: According to the baseball oracle known as Bill James, “more players — and especially more GREAT players — find 33 to be their most punishing season, the year that long fly balls stop leaving the park, the year that groundballs stop rolling through the infield, the year the bat feels heavy in July and August.” And this is why the stat geeks love James: A-Rod, Soriano, Ortiz, Renteria, Berkman, and Byrnes, to name a few, are all 33, and all struggling mightily this season. James goes on to point out a ton of Hall of Famers who tanked at the age of 33. [SI]

mild threadjack: USA hockey just announced their camp for the winter olympics. We are so fucked.

I believe the correct answer is A-rod, who counter to popular belief is not struggling mightly.

The correct answer is Byrnes

a-rod is still on pace for a 30 home run season (short season after hip surgery) and Ortiz has been declining for more than just this season. Berkman has always been up and down, Byrnes was a flash in the pan two seasons ago with 50 SB, Soriano we now know is older than he originally said he was, and i got nothing on Renteria (don’t pay attention to him.)

Bill James parties.

Exactly, A-Rod is still having a decent season. Brynes is/was good defensively even though he’s slipped. Can’t really argue with James, though.

Berkman just got off to a horrible start. He’s raised his average, OBP, and OBPS significantly and steadily over the past month, and he’s still on track for 30+ homers and 100 RBI. I’ll bet the house his BA is back above .300 at the end of the year.
Big Puma cares not for your stats.
