So, About That List of Alleged Players Who Supposedly Failed a Drug Test in 2003 …
Baseball, Courts, Legal June 30th. 2009, 12:30pm
A reader who was fishing for fantasy baseball information stumbled upon this link, which has an unauthored post titled “Rumored steroid list (UNCONFIRMED).” The website then lists 104 names of baseball players. The list is already being discussed here. And as Tim Marchman points out, the list could be a hoax or incomplete or just not accurate, and one name is missing: Jason Grimsley, who, according to court documents, failed a drug test in 2003. We emailed Rotoinfo about its post, but have not heard back. A re-posting of Rotoinfo’s list after the jump (with screengrabs in case they yank the post):

Who the hell is Terry Adams? Dan Smith? Are these friends of Rotoinfo?
June 30th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
so many of those guys were on my fantasy team.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Meh
June 30th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
One thing we do know — the risk paid off for Craig Wilson.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
no jeff bagwell? color me shocked.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Bags had a great whizinator. He was smart enough to purchase the caucasion one to fool the tester.

Assuming it’s the definitive list of stars and superstars that used, the following superstars should now be even further elevated given their accomplishments in the steroids era:
Frank Thomas
Ken Griffey Jr
Greg Maddux
Randy Johnson
June 30th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
frank thomas is a douchebag.
he should be on the list even if he was innocent.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
This is practically the who’s who of baseball. Call me crazy, but I feel like steroid use is equally distributed among the haves and the have-nots. Feels like someone looked at rosters from 2003 and generally picked the best players to put on the list.
That being said, if this is real… holy crap.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
If this list is confirmed than that 2004 Sox title is a complete fraud and i will do cartwheels. I love seeing Ortiz and Damon’s name out there.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Love how the 1st 8 listed are Sawx. Won’t believe it until we see proof though.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Greg Maddux will be the most underappreciated player of this entire era.
He had more wins than Clemens, and didn’t become part of his team’s rotation until a full two years after Clemens did.
/last I checked, strikeouts count as one out, same as a ground out
June 30th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
NOMAH!!
June 30th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
That must be why Rincon is the only Twin on the list.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Greg Maddux will be the most underappreciated player of this entire era.
As will Griffey, didn’t use steroids to impact his performance and he didn’t use them for a speedy recovery from an injury. Some of the names on this list are awesome.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
I wonder if this is legit? If it is I would love it.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
So all these guys were too cheap / lazy / dumb to get HGH?
June 30th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
where’s duckworth?
June 30th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
No way this is the official list, these guys are grouped by the teams they played on. Someone just went through and picked out pretty obvious juicers and filled the list up to 103 players. Plus no Grimsley.
Not hard to do though. Take this for example, and check out 3.5.01.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
im probably bigger than some of those guys on the list. what the fuck were they doing taking steriods
June 30th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I didn’t realize that Frank Thomas played quarterback for the Steelers
June 30th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
and guys like Griffey and Maddux deserve more dap because they didn’t fall into the steroid culture that spread like a plague all over Major League Baseball. They obeyed the clubhouse rule and kept their mouths shut knowing others were doing it and their numbers would be deflated because of it.
/if these two names surface, i’ll look like an asshole.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
True, but what way would you have them listed? Alphabetical?
June 30th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Don’t forget Chipper Jones. I think he is the most underrated star in baseball. He is a first ballot hall of famer and no one really talks about him much.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
A lot of Sawx and Cubbies
June 30th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Don’t you think you’re jumping the gun reprinting this without any kind of verification? I know you want to be first, but it’s pretty thin.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
No MN Twins (other than Kenny Rogers and David Ortiz)
To be honest I was half-expecting to see Torii Hunter, Joe Mays, Joe Nathan, Jacque Jones, Rick Reed, etc
June 30th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Don’t you think you’re jumping the gun reprinting this without any kind of verification? I know you want to be first, but it’s pretty thin.
It’s a rumor. It’s also genius, because we know somebody has the list, and that they’re willing to leak names, especially in the face of vehement denials by guilty parties.
So make up 103 names, write them down, and just wait for the fireworks. There’s not a single name on that list that I recognize that surprises me. There’s also quite a few I don’t recognize.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
I assumed Chipper would be on there, ala Juan Gone with all the hammy issues…
June 30th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
No Jim Thome… but this reads like a who’s-who of baseball from 2003. I find it hard to believe that more AAAA players weren’t nailed. If anyone needed roids it was guys like that. So I sort of doubt this list is true.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
king felix not a surprise intellectually, just never thought of him. Used to be fat, not fat now. IS HE PUDGE?
June 30th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Definitely. I’m surprised someone hadn’t done something like this sooner. While this is strictly unconfirmed rumor, that list appears plausible at first glance.
Everyone forgets Chipper and Scott Rolen.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Also, remember in 2003 the White Sox decided, as a team, not to be tested because not pissing = positive test (5% of all MLBers had to test positive for testing to occur in 2004). IIRC, the MLBPA made them piss, but I’m not sure. Here is the story from the NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/23/sports/around-the-majors-quiet-role-of-white-sox-in-testing-for-steroids.html
June 30th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
a) not first, as it was discussed elsewhere
b) remember, when the 2003 test was administered, it was done so with this caveat: the tests will be destroyed and never see the light of day. from 2003-2007, the players were given a heads up on when the tests were coming (that’s been written).
June 30th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
I think this is a fake. There are just too many big names on there and not enough lower end guys on there. You would think that in all of MLB, there would be some more guys who tried them, but still didn’t thrive of of the “help”.
If it is true, I love it that there isn’t a single Twin on there except Ortiz and we all know he did this after leaving MN.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
If this were true, it would be as satisfying as Thanksgiving dinner. I don’t think it is though.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Anyone else havin trouble loading the site?
June 30th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Hello Big Lead Readers. I just saw that you were looking for some info from roto info. They posted the link from my our web site Move the Needle.net We created the original post yesterday.
http://movetheneedle.blogspot.com/2009/06/2003-steroid-list-leaks-out-rumored.html
We did not create the list, it was emailed to us. We assume anybody could make up a list like this and we do not think it is real. Though the names on it mostly make sense. Yes there are some names missing that have been outed like Grimsley. We doubt that our little blog would have the first and only scoop so that is why we do not think it is legit. It is listed as rumored and unconfirmed in our posting.
Feel free to hit us up further if need be.

June 30th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Prob not true, no Travis Hafner.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
a) not first, as it was discussed elsewhere
My bad. Ok, so you’re second. It’s still thin. Nothing more than conjecture in a nice, numerical order.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Being proud that your team accidentally didn’t have any steroids guys is foolish. Satistically, it seems like this just means that your team didn’t have many good players.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Felix Rodriguez != King Felix
June 30th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
No mike piazza. Man i hope this list is legit.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Since when was Felix Rodriguez
a) King Felix, or
b) fat
The answer is
c) a mediocre middle reliever who’s last name is Rodriguez, not Hernandez.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
yep…looks like paolo fucked it up with another retarded commenting edict.
typical LA homer…or wherever he’s from.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
this list seems to be written by team, which was probably pointed out already. The first 8 were Red Sox in 2003!
June 30th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
How did Felix Rodriguez finish 20th in NL MVP voting in 2001? He pitched 80 innings, didn’t start a game, and had zero saves.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
I am mentally challenged.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
typical LA homer…or wherever he’s from.
I’m not even going to joke about it. Ban that retard, today.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I feel like this list is a bit too convenient to be for real. They tested like 1,100 guys and these results are like 80 - 90% household names. Also, I look at a guy like Galarraga and am dubious. It seems like an awful weird thing to do when you just recently beat cancer and your career was kind of at a natural end anyway.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Divine Right.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Wait, so what did Paolo do? And I’m not the only one who is frightened by him?
June 30th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
bagwell, biggio, luis gonzalez, steve finley, caminiti
things that make you say “hmmmmmmmm……”
June 30th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
I pray that no one goes to this site. This is called a blog stunt or something for traffic. Go away Needle.net.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Right. Why would you hold on by filling your body with drugs when filling your body with drugs just saved your life? Why would you hang around an extra year doing steroids? Just for the extra million dollars? That doesn’t even make any sense.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:00 pm

Wow, so chemo and anabolic steroids are kind of the same thing? Them roids really are getting a bad rap then. And Galarraga signed a 500k contract for 2003 after total career earnings of $55 million. Obviously I have no idea if he used or not, but lots of people actually point to his cancer as evidence that he might have usedearlier in his career. And if you believe that then the idea that he would be using in 2003 is kind of out there.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
BREAKING NEWS…Baseball stars have/do take steroids. Also, think this list is probably fake for many of the reasons above, but also because many players were taking designer steroids or HGH. Which by all accounts were not detectable by the current methods, or required a blood test.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Kinda sad when you’re getting ethics lessons from Deadspin.
If you believe this list is accurate, commence kicking yourself in the balls …. NOW.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
Seems sketchy how the list leads with all Red Sox players… talk about an unreliable “source” - not even worth re-printing at this point.
/ not a Red Sox fan
June 30th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Well, it does seem like it jumps into Orioles then the rest of the AL East.
I’m not trying to make the least sound legit, but there seems to be many other ways to attack it than the order it was put in.
June 30th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
why would u even post this obvious fake list?
June 30th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
this is exactly why “blogs” get killed. Why not just throw out 104 names and see what happens. Nothing bad can happen, right?
C’mon. The crazy thing is it could be right on. Reality is it just does not matter.
Here is the scoop: baseball players are cheaters; soccer players are pussies; football players earn their money; and hoops players love to cash their paycheck.
Aside from that - it does not really matter.
PS - golfers are mostly white.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
Wasnt this the fake list that came out that supposedly had the people on the Mitchell report right before the Mitchell report came out? Definite fake.
Hilarious that someone could look at that list of 103 names though and somehow thinks this only causes a fraud alert on the Red Sox championship. Bias much?
June 30th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Yeah, theres definitely no football players doing anything illegal.
I hope you asked the same question when a former Red Sox board member led an investigation that found no Red Sox players at the time were found to have any ties to steroids.
I do agree though, I’d bet that no World Series team in the past 10-15 years was without at least one roider. Its sad but something baseball fans will deal with forever.
