NFL List Week: 5 Best Storylines This Season
NFL July 1st. 2009, 3:45pm
1. Tom Brady’s Return.
In the last full game he played, the Patriots lost to the Giants in an epic Super Bowl. New England entered last season as the Super Bowl favorites … Brady went down in the 1st quarter of the season opener and depending on what you read, he may or may not have fully recovered. They’ll open this season as the favorites once again, though Belichick’s right hand man is now in KC. Worth noting: Since Brady begun dating Gisele – now married, of course – he hasn’t won a Super Bowl.
2. He Who Shall Not Be Named vs. The Packers.
Yes, we all despise him, and thus we will not deign to mention him by name. Oct. 5 in Minnesota will be seismic; Nov. 1 in Lambeau, moreso. Wishing you luck, Ted.
3. New QB Eras in Chicago, KC, Detroit, New York.
Jay Cutler in Chicago eclipses Mark Sanchez in New York, but not by much. (And puhleeese stop acting like the Sanchez era in NY is overhyped. As we’ve mentioned before, it appears CBS is going to nationally-televise his first career start against the Texans.) How will Matt Cassel respond to being the man in Kansas City? Surely a few of you think he could have been a one-year wonder. On the backburner: Matthew Stafford in Detroit, but at least he’s got a weapon in Megatron.
4. Jailbirds/Arrests/Meltdown/Character guys.
Vick. Plaxico. Vince Young. Stallworth. Will anyone take a chance on the first two? Young’s a backup, but perhaps not for long; Stallworth may not sniff the field this season, but he was never a major factor, anyway.
5. QB/Coach Tandems Potentially on the Hot Seat.
* Brees and Payton in New Orleans. Who cares if you’re passing for 5,000 yards if you’re not in the playoffs? Payton is alternative thought of as a genius and overrated. Got defense?
* Romo and Phillips in Dallas. Jones jettisoned TO to make life easy on Romo, who hopes to shake those December struggles. Phillips probably needs a run to the SB to keep his job.
* Edwards and Jauron in Buffalo. One of the worst offenses in the league was 5-1 … but later lost 7 of 8 in a tank job that would have claimed the scalp of most coaches.
* Palmer and Lewis in Cincinnati. Lewis has survived three seasons of descending victories; Palmer’s coming off an injury. There’s optimism, but not from us.
Honorable mention: Post-Dungy era in Indy, life without Madden, and can Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco do it again?

Between the age, the injury, the woman, and the hats, I’m dont think the Tom Brady of two years ago is ever returning. I could really see him struggling early on, he’s not going to suck, but there wont be any undefeated seasons again.
July 1st, 2009 at 3:52 pm
ryan, yes. flacco, god no.
looking good valentine!!!
July 1st, 2009 at 3:54 pm
If Brady comes back strong, I will never question his desire as a player ever again.

7. How many eyebrows will Joe Flacco have next year? Answer, still one.
July 1st, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Amen. Brady was one of the only reasons to like Boston.
/Leaving the mother of your child while she was preggers for a “model” who looks like a Tranny is bound to give you tons of bad karma.

So because CBS is televising the game it isn’t overhyped? I think that is the defintion of being overhyped. Doesn’t the dude have 16 career wins in college?
July 1st, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Ryan can and shall…. Flacco will be exposed as mediocre at best this year.
He reminds me of another QB in recent memory that is consistently bailed out by his defense and gets too much credit for being a major factor………

QB/Coach Tandem- Zorn and Campbell. Campbell is in the last year of his contract. Danny boy likes to shuffle coaching staff as well.
Don’t think Sanchez is going to be the savior the Jets think he is. And certainly not in his rookie year.
#6 for me is what happens with the Labor Standoff between owners and players.

I have a difficult time seeing Brady coming back as anything but great.
July 1st, 2009 at 3:57 pm
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Sean Payton is the kind of coach who would run a double reverse on 4th and goal from the 1.
/because there’s no possible way the defense is expecting it
//if Payton can stop out-thinking himself on those 4-5 plays a game, look out
///not optimistic that it will ever happen
July 1st, 2009 at 3:57 pm
it’s a bit unrealistic to assume 16-0 with 50 TD’s in the regular season even if he never blew out his knee.
but it’s also his knee, not his throwing shoulder, head problems, or a hidden ankle injury.
brady got his rehab out of the way during last season for the most part and was able to do nearly a full offseason of regular offseason work. he’ll be fine.
the post dungy era is much more interesting than coach/qb’s on the hot seat.
this list needs more controversy.
July 1st, 2009 at 3:58 pm
coop way to go out on a limb, no undefeated season. brady is still a god of qb’s. he gets a hot wife and a sweet hat (right tbl?) and everyone thinks he won’t still be awesome. he got hurt. he is back and will be fine.

Im going with all Atl. Matt Ryan is in for a rude awakening. Off the schedule from last year, Det, STL, Oak, KC, and on comes the NFC/AFC East, just a bit tougher.

spencer, I’ll say this about the NFC South:
*Atlanta won’t repeat (no NFC South team ever does)
*The Saints probably don’t have the defense to win big
*Jake Delhomme is this close to being washed up
*Tampa Bay wasn’t that bad last year

My fantasy team last year.

jay…i agree with all of that, but im just not prepared to live in a world where a dude who blew ass at K-State leads an NFL team to the playoffs.

Just remember in December that you’ve got Mike Mularkey coaching him. He had his “blind squirrel finds an acorn” moment last year. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I know. I ask in jest but there’s some honesty to it. I think the Saints have made strides to improve their D — if Gregg Williams can’t motivate Charles Grant and Will Smith, they might as well be cut right now.
Houston – I expect a 2-6 start, followed by a 7-1 finish and another offseason of “Here comes the Texans!”
Raiders – who else is good in that division? OK, San Diego. But Denver has imploded thanks to McDaniels and KC is still building its talent pool.
Marvin – the only way is if the cheap-ass Mike Brown decides to eat his contract. I doubt it.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:15 pm
You are nuts, sir. JP Loss-man (nice, btw) turned himself into a wannabe by sucking at the position. And Mularky has far superior offensive weapons to use in ATL with his schemes than in BUF. The offense will not be the question mark for Mike Smith this year.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:15 pm
I’m praying that the Saints will find a defense, and there are signs of optimism. Gregg Williams is a million times better than Gary Gibbs. Jonathan Vilma is going to kill people in his defense. The Saints have potentially 4 good corners this year (Greer, Porter, Gay, and Jenkins), and Sedrick Ellis should get a lot better.
However, that may not be enough to offset the fact that the Saints probably have 2 NFL-caliber linebackers on their roster right now, and Charles Grant and Will Smith begin the year on 4-game suspensions.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:17 pm
jay…you’ll love jenkins, he was the fucking best at OSU. if he sucks, i’ll paypal you a dollar.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Charles Grant and Will Smith begin the year on 4-game suspensions.
CRAP! Completely forgot about that!
Oh well…it’s not like they were going to be getting sacks in those games.

“But he’s so big!â€
this guy is JaMarcus Russell before he gets on the free food buffet. Once he gets to about 280, I’d say the makeover will be complete.
@jay- pat white?
@Reaaazy: read this, and get back to me (Palm-Beach Post…)
White continued to struggle throwing the ball.
He hit the cross bar on one pass during red zone, threw an interception to Jason Allen (who went up and snagged the ball while covering Armstrong), suffered a batted-down pass by rookie NT Lou Ellis and was so off on a throw into the corner of the end zone that was that it bounced off Parcells’ golf cart.
Parcells immediately moved the cart 20 yards away.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:17 pm
They will be this year. If you watched enough KSU games you would know that Freeman is a mental midget. If he is starting from day one, the NFC South just went from 4 contenders to 3. That division could have an 8-game winner as its rep to the playoffs. Have you seen the schedules? They get the NFC East and the AFC East I believe, and ATL gets every one of the NFC East teams after their bye week. Ouch.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:18 pm
I thought most players despised Gregg Williams (particularly in WAS and JAX), and that’s why he’s bounced around so much.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:18 pm
I am not by any means a Josh Freeman supporter. But he inherits the best team of all the rookies.
Basically you make him sound like a 1-A version of Joe Flacco, and he rode the right circumstances to the AFC Championship last year in spite of being pretty damn mediocre.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:19 pm
@jpq: In regards to Mularkey’s offense first year in buffalo-
“He rallied his team to a 9-7 record by the end of the season… sparked by a six-game winning streak during which the Bills scored more points than in any other similar stretch in franchise history.”
July 1st, 2009 at 4:19 pm
b/c the public knows everything about that whole situation we have the right to pass judgement.
please, who really gives a shit. it’s not like that kid won’t be taken care of anyway when both parents and step parent make millions a year.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:22 pm
And Mularky has far superior offensive weapons to use in ATL with his schemes than in BUF.
hey Matty Ice: They had Lee Evans and Eric Moulds as and Travis Henry and McGahee as RB’s. What more did he need? Kelly Thurman and Reed?
Also, look up his tenure w/ the Fins and Cam Cameron also. He’s another Payton-type guy who loves the WR reverse on 4th & goal from the 1, just to do it.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:22 pm
That dude was going to suck with Bill Walsh coaching him.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:26 pm
If you think the Raiders stand a chance at anything but another 10 losses, you need to quit bogarting and pass.
Denver didn’t really “implode.” We lost a strong-armed QB with rocks in his brain who could teach Joanna Krupa diva-ness, nearly all of whose production came versus weak defenses, who had evidently demanded a trade through a surrogate before McDaniels was even hired.
If Shanahan had stayed, we’d have had the same big problems: no D-line and a crushing schedule.
We’re pretty much where we were last year, but with an actual defensive coordinator instead of the historically awful Bob Slowik. Dunno if that will help much, but it’s a start.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:27 pm
“He rallied his team to a 9-7 record by the end of the season… sparked by a six-game winning streak during which the Bills scored more points than in any other similar stretch in franchise history.€
and then just needed to beat a Steelers team at home that rested all their main players to clinch a playoff berth. They shit the bed. Ask anyone in Buffalo. It was one of the worst losses in franchise history. The next year, they went 5-11 and he quit.
You can save all these comments and stick them to me in December if/when I’m wrong, but I’ve seen this guy’s act for 8 years and he sucks
July 1st, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Steelers flying under the media radar this season is fine by me. Let the NY and Dallas media darlings collapse.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:28 pm
ATL is going to have sick offensive skill guys this year, but the o-line scares me. The left side is set, but the right side??? Not so much. But they have a legit #1 WR in Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez at TE, Harry Douglas in the slot and Jenkins as the posession WR. Then they have one of the best fullbacks in the league (Ovie) and a beast as at RB in Turner. The offense will be just fine, but damn is the D going to need a ton of help.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:29 pm
I thought his movement was because Daniel Snyder paid for him like he was supposed to be Buddy Ryan and Dick Lebeau combined, and looked for a quick ride out of town before they realized he wasn’t
I don’t think that means he’s a bad coordinator. He’s just not a God
July 1st, 2009 at 4:30 pm
We’re pretty much where we were last year, but with an actual defensive coordinator instead of the historically awful Bob Slowik. Dunno if that will help much, but it’s a start.
So you haven’t improved on defense but have gotten weaker on offense and that’s somehow similar to last year?
In what universe is Kyle Orton = Jay Cutler?
July 1st, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Baltimore is a much better team than Tampa. Tampa’s D is not capable of carrying a rookie like Ballmer’s was–and even though I don’t think much of Flacco, I’d take him in a New York minute over Freeman, who is simply worthless.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Steelers flying under the media radar this season is fine by me.
Not at all. Still penciled in for 10+ wins and at least a 2nd round playoff game. Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Yep, for sure.
Our first 5 picks or so were all defense, so I hope they are quick learners. I hope Mr. Dimitroff is right once again…
July 1st, 2009 at 4:36 pm
I don’t think that means he’s a bad coordinator. He’s just not a God
he’s one of those “Good as a coordinator who can’t be a good head coach”. The Bills have cornered the market on them in the last 10 years:
Wade Phillips
Gregg Williams
Mike Mularkey *
Dick Jauron
/* see above on my real thoughts-lol
//Williams wasn’t liked on the Bills, either
July 1st, 2009 at 4:36 pm
steelers are gay and they, and their fans, will receive their proper judgement in the afterlife.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:37 pm
He’s do for a come-down after hitting on the first 5 picks from his first draft. ATL desperately needs Jerry to play well at DT this year.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:37 pm
I don’t think Kyle Orton is as talented as Jay Cutler, no.
But I also don’t think we got necessarily weaker on offense. The two had nearly identical INT/TD ratios, and the shining star that is Jay-Jay led us to the exalted position of…16th in the league in scoring offense. Step down, Joe Montana!
We finished last season with seven running backs on IR and still averaged nearly 5 yards per carry. The offensive line is young and excellent. Assuming Marshall returns, and he likely will, we have a very solid set of receivers (Marshall, Royal, Stokely in the slot, two excellent tight ends).
I suppose what I’m saying is, it wasn’t all Jay. He had a lot of help. In fact, it could be easily argued that he underachieved with what he had.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:39 pm
jpq…so what you’re saying is that once jauron gets fired, the bills are going to try and pry norv turner away from SD just to run the table?
July 1st, 2009 at 4:40 pm
That was Shanahan’s fault.
/firing him was absurd.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:40 pm

spencer: I think Wann-stasche would be the pick. They like hiring good DC’s who can’t coach a lick. Norv is on the wrong side of the ball for the living corpse that owns the team.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:43 pm
I’m just glad Steve Fairchild started getting blasted by the Buffalo fans/media–so he could come back home where he belongs, at Colorado State.

July 1st, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Nope. The zone blocking scheme was actually Gibbs’ deal, with a big assist from Bobby Turner. Turner stayed, and so did Rick Dennison, who’s been coaching the same scheme here since Gibbs left.
I’m not a revisionist historian. Shanahan was a great game day coach, one of the best ever. But he’d moved into the Late Roman Empire period of his tenure–things had gone rotten in the building and he was blind to it.
He also couldn’t ID defensive talent if his life depended on it and had gotten to the point where he thought he could simply outscore everyone and still win big.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:52 pm
You should pray for that… letting Tony Homo steer the ship = no playoffs.

Coach Shanahan wasn’t fired. General Manager Shanahan was fired, and Coach Shanahan resigned shortly thereafter.
July 1st, 2009 at 4:59 pm
All that crap about Flacco and some of the later comments got me back to thinking about one of our discussions at the end of the last football season:
Joe Flacco has more playoff wins than Tony Romo
/and I have as many as Romo
July 1st, 2009 at 5:00 pm
+135
Be careful what you wish for. Shanny LOVES Romo. And in recent seasons, hasn’t loved running the ball nearly as much as he’s loved throwing it.
July 1st, 2009 at 5:01 pm
The “z” was originally a mistake while attempting to hit the shift key with the left hand, and type “OMG”
Also used in all-caps, ‘ZOMG’ is generally used in a sarcastic manner, more often than not a humiliating fasion. It is also used as a device for stating the obvious.

@Jay: Now that you mention it, I also have as many playoffs wins as Romo.
/But I have less turnovers.
July 1st, 2009 at 5:11 pm
If you’re keeping score at home, when it comes to Roethlisberger, playoff games and Super Bowls are won by teams. When it comes to Romo, the fact that his team didn’t win is all his fault. In case you were wondering.

Bizzaro.
They no longer have Rex Ryan. Hello, drop-off.
@JPQ – The Bears beat you to Jauron. I had to watch that egghead try and run my team for a few seasons. He hired John Shoop and the screen-pass-on-3rd-and-26 offense. Hardest football I’ve ever had to watch.
YL – Is it really that much of a foregone conclusion that Wade is out after this year? I think he sucks too, but if the guy wins just one playoff game this year, he’s coming back IMO.
July 1st, 2009 at 5:23 pm
excuse me, i just cant wait for football. seems as if the superbowl was 3 years ago
July 1st, 2009 at 5:26 pm
SC – He’s out. All that remains to be seen is whether Garrett is gone too. I think the ‘Boys are due for another down year this year. Winning one playoff game is a tall order. After all, Romo is their quarterback.

@lefty & mrejr – I just laughed for about 3 minutes straight due to your discussion over at my page. Comedy gold. That just inspired a post for tomorrow.

LOL. spencer, irishmafia and i had a discussion about who’s the worst ran franchise out of our three favorite teams.
guess that discussion must have ended like the one trying to decide which white guy looks dumber in a pork pie hat (cue picture on top of this post)

They have a better defense than Tampa does. I don’t particularly think that’s some crazy stretch. Tampa fell apart at the end of last year and looked positively ancient.
Besides, how many good D-coordinators have left Baltimore over the years? And how much did it generally affect their bottom line?

I have abstained from the hat discussion…. But upon further review – TOM BRADY GOT A FREE BOWL OF SOUP WHEN HE BOUGHT THAT HAT. GOOD GOD!

Shit, I left and didn’t respond to RomoTalk.
All Romo had to do to have a playoff win was not fumble a snap. It is entirely his fault.
All of this has to do with the fact that the MSM tried to convince the world that he was an “elite” quarterback. Basically because he’s on the right team and he’s fucking a celebrity.

Good to see TBL getting an early start on his “Drew Brees is overrated” wackiness. Cause we all know the last thing any franchise, let alone the Jets, needs is a quarterback who COULD throw for 5,000 yards if need-be.
Yeah, Drew Brees is really on the hot seat… (shakes head in disgust.)
