1. Tom Brady’s Return.
In the last full game he played, the Patriots lost to the Giants in an epic Super Bowl. New England entered last season as the Super Bowl favorites … Brady went down in the 1st quarter of the season opener and depending on what you read, he may or may not have fully recovered. They’ll open this season as the favorites once again, though Belichick’s right hand man is now in KC. Worth noting: Since Brady begun dating Gisele – now married, of course – he hasn’t won a Super Bowl.

2. He Who Shall Not Be Named vs. The Packers.
Yes, we all despise him, and thus we will not deign to mention him by name. Oct. 5 in Minnesota will be seismic; Nov. 1 in Lambeau, moreso. Wishing you luck, Ted.

3. New QB Eras in Chicago, KC, Detroit, New York.
Jay Cutler in Chicago eclipses Mark Sanchez in New York, but not by much. (And puhleeese stop acting like the Sanchez era in NY is overhyped. As we’ve mentioned before, it appears CBS is going to nationally-televise his first career start against the Texans.) How will Matt Cassel respond to being the man in Kansas City? Surely a few of you think he could have been a one-year wonder. On the backburner: Matthew Stafford in Detroit, but at least he’s got a weapon in Megatron.

4. Jailbirds/Arrests/Meltdown/Character guys.
Vick. Plaxico. Vince Young. Stallworth. Will anyone take a chance on the first two? Young’s a backup, but perhaps not for long; Stallworth may not sniff the field this season, but he was never a major factor, anyway.

5. QB/Coach Tandems Potentially on the Hot Seat.
* Brees and Payton in New Orleans. Who cares if you’re passing for 5,000 yards if you’re not in the playoffs? Payton is alternative thought of as a genius and overrated. Got defense?
* Romo and Phillips in Dallas. Jones jettisoned TO to make life easy on Romo, who hopes to shake those December struggles. Phillips probably needs a run to the SB to keep his job.
* Edwards and Jauron in Buffalo. One of the worst offenses in the league was 5-1 … but later lost 7 of 8 in a tank job that would have claimed the scalp of most coaches.
* Palmer and Lewis in Cincinnati. Lewis has survived three seasons of descending victories; Palmer’s coming off an injury. There’s optimism, but not from us.

Honorable mention: Post-Dungy era in Indy, life without Madden, and can Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco do it again?
