The July 4 Weekend is Nearly Upon Us
Golf, Movies, Soccer, Tennis, Video, WAG July 1st. 2009, 5:45pm
This is what you may be doing this weekend – behind the wheel of a boat with a bikini-clad WAG giving you a rub. Mr. Robot is a lucky fellow. We’re t-minus 24 hours until the holiday begins. Our weekend posting schedule we be as follows: Whenever the mood strikes us. There will probably be something Wimbledon-related; maybe something on Manny’s return, and probably any earth-shattering NBA moves. And no, Gortat-to-Houston does not qualify. We’ll be talking Transformers tomorrow. Jozy Altidore said it was terrible, and 17-year-olds know movies, so we officially have no hope for it.
Wish we had spent today like Steinberg: On the golf course with Tiger, Tony and Jessica.
After the jump, Steven Colbert on soccer.

Why waste the time?
July 1st, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Wish we had spent today like Steinberg: On the golf course with Tiger, Tony and Jessica.
Looks like Jessica found the weight she supposedly lost. Any guy, queer eye or not, will tell her those horizontal stripes are not slimming. WOW she got junk up in that trunk
Also funny that Homo played in Tiger’s event in DC. Sure (s)he didn’t get heckled much
July 1st, 2009 at 6:08 pm
So, since the O’s went and fucked over last night’s good momentum by choking today and losing, how can I watch the Phillies game if that’s blacked out here? Usually I’d prefer the O’s, but obviously, they played. MLB.tv blacks out the Phils games in the area.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Wow, they gave up four runs in the ninth? And why didn’t Sherrill come in to start the inning?
July 1st, 2009 at 6:15 pm
Closers usually don’t close in non save situations.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Tony probably pulled a Costanza and incorporated pastrami sandwiches into sex or something.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:22 pm
Well it was a 4-run lead, Johnson though, quickly gabe up a 2-run shot to Youkilis, who’s owned the O’s this series. Then Sherrill just couldn’t get it over the plate, three walks. Fuck this is making me angry. Sherrill loves to make it interesting.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:33 pm
Good to see the Canadiens are overpaying for everyone they can. And why not, it worked for Tampa last year.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:34 pm
I love Abby Clancy.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Thanks for bringing your fastball, but it might be a sound idea for perennial losers to have their best guy out there against a team like the Red Sox.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Good to see the Canadiens are overpaying for everyone they can. And why not, it worked for Tampa last year.
TSN said today that Komisarek got 10 calls in the 1st hour of FA. Funny to see the Canadiens panic (also Edmonton w/ Khabi after they lost Conklin)
July 1st, 2009 at 6:38 pm
@Buckner: Has Sherrill been that shaky? He had only given up two hits in his last eight appearances (before today).
July 1st, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Yep. Hugely overpaid for Camilleri when his season was by and large a product of playing with Iggy, and giving the Pens sixth defenseman over two million a year? Boy oh boy.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:41 pm
We’ll be talking Transformers tomorrow
July 1st, 2009 at 6:42 pm
As of late, he’d been great. Of course, he let two on last night before closing the door. But I’m just speaking in general terms, there always seem to be men on base when he’s saving a game.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Hopefully, this doesn’t hurt his trade value at all.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:46 pm
What are the canadiens doing? Are Montreal and Calgary combining teams? Because thats the only way they are going to have enough players dressed for each game.
July 1st, 2009 at 6:48 pm
You talk as if Sherill is Mariano Rivera and an automatic win. . .
July 1st, 2009 at 6:58 pm
mole: there is this guy (Bucky Gleason) in Buffalo who made a living crucifying the Sabres for losing Briere, Drury, McKee and Campbell. He literally wrote for a YEAR about how the Sabres mgmt sucked and how they blew it. He KNEW Drury and Briere would have taken HUGE discounts to stay w/ the Sabres.
Then, Silver wrote this yesterday. Loved it.

July 1st, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Pistons sign Ben Gordon, Adrian Wojo at Yahoo! Sports reports. 5 years/55 mil.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-gordonpistons070109&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
July 1st, 2009 at 7:08 pm
11 mil a year for a guy who when on is dangerous but besides that does nothing well. good riddance you grouchy one dimensional fuck.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Don’t totally disagree, but he did work last night, it was a day game, and the Orioles play Anaheim tomorrow. Not irrational to try to give him the day off.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Chicago has spoken.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Overpaid much? Can’t believe Dumars’ stupid ass gave him that kind of money. Moron.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Yikes, that’s a terrible signing. Really glad he’s not going to be taking up $11 million on Chicago’s cap. They have Deng for that.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Mole, I know you’re sad to see Gill hit the highway.
No matter the sport, it seems like any signing is a panic move/gross overpayment in the first few days of free agency.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:23 pm
didnt gordon used to be loved
July 1st, 2009 at 7:25 pm
I tend to agree, unless it’s with regard to resigning your own guys. I’d be much more comfortable committing big money to someone already proven in my organization.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Another stroke of genius by Joe Dumbars. Not so fast, Cleveland. The Central title is no longer a lay-up.
/sincere
July 1st, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Fair point on the night game/day game, Taguchi.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:32 pm
Still is, to an extent. Not worth $11M a season. He’s Bobby Jackson.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:34 pm
@umm…hockey fans: Martin Biron’s name is no where to be found. Khabi should have been the first goaltender to go, but shouldn’t Biron be up there too?
July 1st, 2009 at 7:38 pm
I have to disagree with mole on the Cammalleri signing. I actually like him. Of course, it could all be because he played at Michigan.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:42 pm
my love for him ended with the season. his departure helps clear up the logjam of small guards the bulls have. if gordon had some of hinrich d then he would probably be similar to dwade but like sc said he is bobby jackson.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Did the pistons lose Stuckey, Hamilton, AI or Bynum to free agency? It seems like if you were going to pay someone 11 million dollars it would be in the front court, where Sheed may go and that leaves them with McDyess, Maxiel and Kwame Brown. That seems to be there need
July 1st, 2009 at 7:54 pm
*their need
July 1st, 2009 at 8:01 pm
The problem is that he is Bobby Jackson but thinks he is Michael Jordan.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:01 pm
wouldnt it be funny if kwame brown has a break out season? i actually wish he would have like 2-4 good years in a row because that dude has to be tired of his name being associated with being bust. i kinda felt sorry for him after mj mind raped him over and over again even though he has made more money in one year than i will see my whole life barring a lotto win or spot on the real world which i could easily turn into many spots on many spots on celebrit reality tv shows
July 1st, 2009 at 8:03 pm
what did mj do to mind rape him
July 1st, 2009 at 8:05 pm
\
drafted him, practiced with him. mj was notorious for being a task master in practice. as a 18 yr old kid being badgered by mj must be like your hero taking a giant shit on you

Micheal Lehan’s “When Nothing Else Matters”, which is essentially a hatchet job on his comeback with the Wizards, has a bunch of great MJ destroying Kwame Brown stories. Highly recommend it if you enjoy reading about Jordan being a dick.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Micheal Leahy is the author

i dont whether that is a insult or not .i just listened to the song(its a country song so i listened to maybe 15 seconds of it) and i havent determined whether i should be upset or not.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:35 pm
PINIELLA BLOW UP!!!!
FIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!
July 1st, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Wow, Joe Dumars really is a dumbass.
Signing Gordon and Charlie V just because you could???
July 1st, 2009 at 8:38 pm
My problem with Detroit signing Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva is what they’re going to do with Rip and/or Tayshaun. You can’t play all four of those guys on the court at once, regardless of who the fifth is – Rodney Stuckey, Kwame Brown (who can still opt out) or a possibly re-signed Antonio McDyess.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:39 pm
mrejr – It’s not an insult. It’s in keeping with your stance on celebreality shows.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Yes, everyone Joe D did it for the fuck of it. He did it to make Detroit worse. Don’t you know that’s what he wants? He WANTS to make the Pistons win 20 games a year. Jesus fucking christ.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:42 pm
that everyone of them should be ended and the cast and crew executed?
July 1st, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Souvenir – Explain this blowup. I just flipped it over and missed. IS he ejected?
July 1st, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Answer to my own question earlier about Biron…
Man…the NHL isn’t wasting any time. Big names aren’t going off the NBA board for at least a few days.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:46 pm
nothing big…he went out there and yelled and threw his hat on the ground.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Settle down man. The thing is Joe Dumars is looking dumber and dumber every year. He is not purposely trying to suck, but sometimes, people suck and don’t even know it.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:49 pm
@NDub – Yeah, he got launched. There were guys on first and third, two outs, with the pitcher up. Wells grounded to 3rd, ball was bobbled and there was a bang bang play at first.
Wells looked to be clearly safe and he was called out. Cost the Cubs a run. Lou came running (I use that term loosely) out of the dugout and immediately tossed his hat. Immediate ejection.
Not a stellar blow up, but Piniella got his moneys worth. Little lip reading it was clear that he told the umpire to, “Go fuck yourself. He was fucking safe you asshole.”
July 1st, 2009 at 8:50 pm
mrejr – Sort of. It’s about how stupid all that shit is and how these no talent assclowns are famous for no reason.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Rondoman – People trash that guy on here all the time and were pretty bad with it today. The guilt built a championship team from the ground up. Why don’t people think he can’t do it again? Has he made blunders? Yeah, Darko is the big one. But he’s also made some great moves. I guess it’s looking through your own prism (as trading Chauncey good [cap space, begin dissassembling team that peaked two years before] or bad [traded your best player for a selfish bum who ruined the season]).
I’m just pissed because people are calling this guy like he’s actually a real MORON blindly running a front office or purposely running a franchise into the ground, as if he doesn’t have or understand its best interest.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:53 pm
mrejr – I like Sammy Fuld being called up. May as well give anyone and everyone a shot at The Show. Kid playing well tonight and he’s another left handed bat.
Looks to have a great arm too. Wonder who is going to be demoted for Aramis on Monday. Can’t be Fox. Hopefully not Blanco.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Ha ha ha ha ha! Awesome. I’m sure I’ll be seeing that one on the highlights tonight.
I’m watching Ghost Hunters on SciFi. That’s right, I said it.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:55 pm

July 1st, 2009 at 8:57 pm
it would be high comedy if bradley got sent down.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Are the Canadiens exempt from the salary cap this year? Are they paying these guys in loonies or whatever the fuck they use up there? Gionta, Camalleri, Gill and taking on Gomez’s shitty contract.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:59 pm
Not that I don’t agree but they couldn’t send Bradley down without A. his consent and B. passing him through waivers. Not that I think B. would be a problem.
July 1st, 2009 at 8:59 pm
Darko is a bust, no doubt, but whoever they picked there wasn’t getting any PT under Larry Brown. And, as NDub pointed out, it’s pretty tough to argue with the results.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:06 pm
He can’t be.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:07 pm
I’m not trying to pile on the Pirates but, it appears they aren’t done dealing. Matt Capps would actually be a good piece to trade because people overpay for closers.
I know the Cubs need a bullpen arm…
July 1st, 2009 at 9:09 pm
you walk around your town popping kids balloons, stealing candy from babies and pushing the soft spot on babies heads until they cry or you cause serious damage dont you mr. buzzkill.?
July 1st, 2009 at 9:10 pm
Christ the Twins should trade for Capps, but Bill Smith engaging in trade negotiations makes me nervous.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:14 pm
I believe his name is actually Buzz Killington.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Oh I like the dude and would love him for around three million. He is the highest paid, on average, winger out of this class, that is retarded. And lol @ the Rangers making Gaborik the second highest. Talk about high risk. Love that guy to death but man he’s Rick DiPietro without the pads.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:26 pm
WHOA HOLY SHIT I misread that. Gaborik is getting SEVEN POINT FIVE a year!
Wowowowowow what a bad signing, I’m so sorry rs27.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:34 pm
so the nhl has lost its damn mind whe it comes to contracts again? does this mean there will be another lockout? [crosses fingers]
July 1st, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Love the Madden signing by Chicago though.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:37 pm
No but the cap will drop between two and five million at the end of next season and some of these teams are going to be absolutely fucked. There are going to be a ton of huge trades next year to get under the cap, should be fun.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:37 pm
In further defense of Dumars, I’m pretty sure he was very sure he was getting Carlos Boozer, until about 3.30 yesterday.
Does that justify paying Charlie Villanueva that kind of scratch? No.
They were always paying Gordon 11 million, though. Which is gross.
Also, if Charlie Villanueva is worth 7 million, what’s Gortat worth? What is Brandon Bass worth?
July 1st, 2009 at 9:39 pm
that’s easy…1 MILLion dollars [puts pinky to the corner of mouth]
July 1st, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Oh and by the way, this latest Pirates trade is a winner simply because it opens up Fletch jokes every night Hanrahan pitches.
Goddamn what a trade. He looked good tonight, definitely has some nasty stuff if he can control it and avoid TJ. Rest of the team bit a dick though.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:47 pm

Daniel Sturridge to Chelsea. Yeah baby.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:52 pm
That’s old news, has the tribunal set a fee yet?
July 1st, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Tell me about him mole. All I heard was a PK guy that can play both ways. Short-handed goal scorer and whatnot.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Nope, they’re thinking around 5 mil though I think.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:56 pm
Went to Michigan.
/all that matters
July 1st, 2009 at 9:56 pm
Not a goal scorer really but former Selke winner, hell of a leader, and can shut down players with the best of them. One of the better two way players of the last decade and a huge reason Brodeur put up some of the numbers he did. Watch that fraud’s stats drop again this year.
July 1st, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Dirt – You gotta start reading SC’s blog. He had that earlier this afternoon.
/not a ssp if it’s not my blog
July 1st, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Most teams have 2-3 guys making 7 mil a year. I call that value and a tradeable chip down the road, if necessary.
The summer of 2010 will have a lot more money out there, especially when the economy gets better. Teams will throw tons of money at guys that don’t deserve it once a few of those bigger names sign.
The Gordon and Villanueva contracts will look reasonable by next FA period.
Sort of like when guys like Ochocinco and Boldin get top notch deals but two years later they’re not even top 10 after guys like Fitz, Lee Evans and Bernard Berrian get contracts.
July 1st, 2009 at 10:09 pm
Leave it to the Rangers to sign the wrong Marian for 2 million more. What the hell are they doing? Gaborik is nice but who knows if he’s healthy. Not only that they are right back up against the cap again even with the Gomez trade. But its ok because they gave Brashear 1 million more than Orr got from Toronto. This team is so mismanaged. Brashear and Avery? Why? I hope Gaborik has 70 goals in his stick because the Rangers don’t have one other scorer on the team.
I guess this means Antropov doesn’t come back even though they could use his size and touch. Oh well. The battle for 8th place begins tonight!
July 1st, 2009 at 10:14 pm

i need to see this monthly commenter ranking only to hope to find out a certain someone is ranked 9,000th due to incessant ass kissing. it would surely make my day, or at least hour.

Dead last: anyone who uses the phrase “nice get” whenever there is an interview. Gonna be a whole bunch of ya tied for that spot.

Um…what the fuck? Anybody? Mole, you drinking?
I thought the same thing TSH. He couldn’t have picked a worse name. Not even Ron Mexico approves of that.

Awesome. Also, anyone who says “wahhhhhhhhhhhhh” before going into their mockery of said comment. Hate it.

Please people, it’s called ‘G’ now. Isn’t it? Any why hasn’t Georgetown sued them for stealing their logo? Those commercials need more mime dance troupes.

The lesson, as always, is fuck the Yankees. Douchebags.

I’m an odd bird.
I think I am probably the only person on the planet that likes both the Cubs and the Yankees. Cubs because of where I’m from and Yankees because I’ve always liked Jeter and their history.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:08 am
The Cubs and Yankees with money are like a mule with a spinning wheel: nobody knows where he got it, and damned if he doesn’t know how to use it.
July 2nd, 2009 at 12:09 am
I’m kinda on the opposite end of the spectrum. Although, my dislike for the Cubs has only really materialized in the last 5-6 years. I just think that now, not always, but now, Jeter is overrated as hell. But good lord, I don’t want to start that debate again.
Also, being an O’s fan, and a peace advocate, I would still punch Jeffrey Maier in the face repeatedly. Would be worth the jailtime.

See kids? This is what being an O’s fan will do to you. Say it with me now- “Friends don’t let friends root for the Orioles”

It was me, for some reason I felt the need to put it in quotes. Was listening to the forty minute version.

I want to freeze it in the winter and skate on it. And then melt it in the spring and drink it.
