Cuban Prospect Defects
1-liner, Baseball July 2nd. 2009, 5:00pmAroldis Chapman walked away from the Dutch hotel where the Cuban national team was staying yesterday and doesn’t plan on going back. Chapman is one of the top lefty pitching prospects in the world. Right now, he’s hiding out in Europe waiting to head to Miami. “I walked out easily, right through the hotel door, and I hopped into a car and left. It was easy. Now the plan is to sign with a major league team.” I wonder how much the Yankees will sign him for? The anticipation is killing me. (ESPN)

Is Chapman a traditional Cuban last name?
My favorite part from the story:
Yes, they’re the only team mentioned. And sadly, they’re probably one of three teams that actually have a shot at signing him.
A distant second: Buster Olney asks if he’s a left-handed Stephen Strasburg

For a 21 year old? That’s a lot of cigars.
