Happy 4th of July Weekend
Kickoff Weekend, Video July 2nd. 2009, 5:15pm
Well, it’s been a banner week here at The Big Lead dot Com. We laughed. We cried. And now, we BBQ and drink. It’s a major holiday weekend. As TBL mentioned the weekend posting will be light at best. Luckily, Marcin Gortat signed his offer sheet before we clocked out for the weekend. Otherwise, it may have been lost in the shuffle.
TBL suggested I send everyone out for their festivities with Real American. I thought, “Yeah, that’s pretty American and obviously badass, but it’s been done.” Hell, my friends and I have been bumping that video since we first figured out what YouTube was way back in college. You guys deserve something bigger and better. Something epic. Something utterly Americana.
With that in mind, I present to you the greatest episode of True Life that MTV ever saw fit to film - I Have A Summer Share. Beer, pizza, the Jersey Shore, cheeseballs, dance clubs, and Tommy - this video has it all.
Happy 4th everybody. May desirable mates sniff your pheromones.

You know what’s a fun movie to watch on the 4th of July? Wet, Hot American Summer.
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:21 pm
God bless America.
Have a safe weekend folks, i’m out.

They say this before all Purdue football games. Hokey Indiana Americana, but it did sound good on a cool fall Saturday afternoon

i like hokey and americana. nice read jpq.
July 2nd, 2009 at 5:44 pm
@shawn: yeah, I looked on youtube and was surprised it wasn’t up there (at least I didn’t find it). 70,000 people yelling it at the end sounds pretty cool
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:00 pm
JPQ, I’m a hoosier as well… Went to IU. and even though I despised them back in the good old Keady vs. Knight days, I’ve actually grown to respect and like Purdue more than IU. I love Painter and the school just keeps progressing as a university.
That said, IU as a campus and way of life and… GIRLS destroys purdue.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Been asleep so I’ll just post random thoughts here.
Marian Hossa is an idiot: ‘if there were no cap I’d still be in Detroit’. How fucking dumb are you? Did you not learn about saying stupid shit after leaving the Pens last summer?
Rob Scuderi just got rich and good for him, but I’m not freaking out about losing our fifth defensemen.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:12 pm
That said, IU as a campus and way of life and… GIRLS destroys purdue.
@mama: You got that right. We win on engineering and astronauts, and not much else-lol
I was there during the Keady/Knight days. They were classic

Dallas is an odd place for Gortat. Dirk will be thrilled, obviously. Do the Mavs have a PG yet?
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Lakers got Artest according to cbssports
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Yup, just saw that, Duder
wow, so you lose ARiza, and get someone older, with a worse shot selection, and a ton of crazy
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Dallas is an odd place for Gortat. Dirk will be thrilled, obviously. Do the Mavs have a PG yet?
I hope they aren’t counting on JJ Barrea. I don’t see how they have the flexibility to offer Gortat anything, myself.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Well according to espn.com, USC and Oklahoma are a huge rivalry.
So I don’t know who to believe.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:49 pm
If the Celtics get Sheed, are they the favorites?
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:49 pm
Plus Ron needs the ball way too much to be effective in the triangle. Artest and Kobe will blow up sooner or later.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:49 pm
But, also a lot better.
Not sure how much they have to pay Artest, but someone is going to fuck up big time when they sign Ariza.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Ruck: I’d say no.
still waiting to see who else Cleveland gets to help LeBron.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Dallas is offering the full Mid Level to Gortat, who accepts that on an offer sheet, meaning that Orlando now has something to match. Orlando has the go ahead from ownership to match up to the midlevel, but they may match and then somehow sign and trade, because Gortat wants to start somewhere. So (and sparty brought this up earlier) it may be a sign and trade for Gortat and for Brandon Bass, on both sides.
I heard yesterday the Mavs were offering Jason Kidd a 3 year deal, but didn’t hear anything else about it just yet.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Cavs will end up signing Carter or some second tier guy. Lame.
July 2nd, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Is there any sensible reason for the Mavs to sign Kidd to a 3 year deal?
Anyone?
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Astros-Padres game has been delayed for a while due to a swarm of bees in left field.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:01 pm
Can you imagine if this was a Yankees or Sawx game how big it would be on ESPN? Player interviews about the bees and all. Now it will hardly get mentioned.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:03 pm

July 2nd, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Is there any sensible reason for the Mavs to sign Kidd to a 3 year deal?
Anyone?
No. None. They’re trying to stay a contender, because Dirk has an ETO for next year, so they can’t relax for one year (plus, they need playoff games to make money at the AA arena), so they’re trying. But no. Not even that he shot better this year, or that they have no other PG’s. There’s no reason, no good one anyway. Except Mark Cuban refuses to believe he made a mistake in trading away Devin Harris.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Love America, SUCK IT YOU FOG BREATHERS!
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:08 pm
Point of contention, Vermont boy: the Mavs play at American Airlins Center. The Miami Salvatores play in AA Arena.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:12 pm
How much are they offering Kidd?
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Artest, Kobe, and Pau could be Phil’s MJ, Scottie, and Rodman 2.0.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:20 pm
i am copyrighting this nickname right now for kobe, artest and pau
the westside connection: the gangsta(kobe) the killa(ron) and the dope dealer(pau)
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:22 pm
This could possibly be a problem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westside_Connection
Of course you have “The” at the beginning.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:25 pm
hey if mitch richmond, tim hardaway and chris mullins can be called run tmc then im sure ice cube, mack 10 and wc wont mind if kobe, artest and pau steals their name
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:28 pm
ice cube and wc
mack 10 no longer fucks with the west side connection
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:34 pm
So are you already counting Lamar out?
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:43 pm
Point of contention, Vermont boy: the Mavs play at American Airlins Center. The Miami Salvatores play in AA Arena.
I stand corrected. Thanks Clown.
Also, I haven’t heard what the $$$ is for Kidd yet, but whatever it is, it’s far too much.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:43 pm
Mark Cuban brought the Mavs to relevance.
And slowly but surely, he’s taking them back to a level of shittiness they haven’t seen since he arrived.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:46 pm
I can’t believe the Cubs are paying Soriano 17mil a year.
Damn. The Yankees get tons of crap for spending freely and not winning a championship, but how it it’s like the Cubs get a free pass. They spend money on absolutely horrible contracts and can’t even win a playoff game.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:46 pm
um if i dont they could be called The Four Horsemen® but lamar isnt really on kobe, artest and pau’s level.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
And slowly but surely, he’s taking them back to a level of shittiness they haven’t seen since he arrived.
It’s may be fun to knock them, but they’ve won 50 games for 9 straight seasons. They just need to get Dirk some help. A center who can catch and finish is a great jumping off point.
Obviously, I hate the Kidd deal, but I did when it happened, too.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Wow.
Ted Lilly makes 13 mil and Fukudome makes 12.5 mil. They signed Bradley to a 3 year 30 mil deal.
/God I love to see the Cubs suck
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:51 pm
I know. But it is sad to see Dirk kinda wasted the last couple of seasons because of the lack of talent around him. I like Dirk, always have, just seems like getting out of D might be the best chance for him to win a ring someday.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:52 pm
As much as everyone hates on the Pirates on here, they have the same amount of wins as the Cubs so what does that say?
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:55 pm
I like Dirk, always have, just seems like getting out of D might be the best chance for him to win a ring someday.
I am actively rooting for Dirk to leave Dallas, and end up somewhere that he gets a fairer shake, even if it is as a 2nd banana (like to Dwyane Wade, for instance).
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:56 pm
My coworker just brought a working girl into the office. WTF.
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:56 pm
So, Dirtheavy, you a Mavs fan then?
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:57 pm
the the cubs should be contracted?
/thats a bannin’
July 2nd, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Remember when the Yankees lost a playoff game because there were too many bugs on the field?
/they’ll use this story as a segue into talking about that
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:00 pm
So, Dirtheavy, you a Mavs fan then?
Yeah. I was a frustrated Mavs fan during the pre-Cuban era, and before that, I was an angry Mavs fan during the Tarpley administration.
/thats a bannin’
Mrejr, I see you added that apostrophe!
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:02 pm
Remember 3 and 4 years ago when ESPN claimed that Ohio State/Michigan was the biggest rivalry in the history of Earth?
And in Pat Forde’s column, it’s #7 today, right behind Texas A&M/Texas Tech
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:02 pm
i wanted to church it up a little bit
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:03 pm
My coworker just brought a working girl into the office. WTF.
A hooker? Where do you work, at a bus station? At a free clinic? At an hourly rate motel?
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Anyone who knows me knows I’m not a Cavs homer. I rip on them more than my aborted son. But if the Cavs get Ariza, I genuinely think they got the better player this point than the Lakers do if they get Artest.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Yeah but is that really saying that much?
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:05 pm
wow, maybe to help with his tps reports*.
* denotes dick.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:17 pm
That’s ridiculous. What’s bigger than OSU/Michigan than Oklahoma/Texas?
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:20 pm
Oh, it’s just for the 2009 season. I guess that makes some sense because Michigan will still be somewhat down, but in historical terms it’s gotta be OSU/Michigan and Okie/Texas 1 and 2 in whatever order you prefer.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:25 pm

July 2nd, 2009 at 8:27 pm
that is ridiculous. i haven’t read the column, but
1) OU/Texas
2) OSU/Michigan
3) Bama/Auburn
after that, who cares
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:36 pm
USC/UCLA?
UF/FSU?
Not arguing that they are bigger than those above, but people do care about those.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:39 pm
OU/Nebraska
USC/Notre Dame
Older quality rivalries.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:39 pm
I’m one of the few Buckeye fans that could care less where my rivalry ranks. It seems like our fan base or Bamas fan base want so desperately to have their grudge match be the “biggest.” When in all actuality, they’re regional. Utah fans could care less what happens at the Big House. Same with Duke and UNC.
Obviously these are all big rivalries, but who the hell cares which is the “biggest.” That’s something Mike and Mike can ruminate on for three hours.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:40 pm
And I stole the term “ruminate” from Ty Dictionary’s thesaurus.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:41 pm
yeah. i wanted to avoid in-state rivalries, but then i thought of the story about an alabama fan killing his auburn cousin or something from a couple years ago, and decided to include that as well.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:42 pm
if they still played every year it would be right up there.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:43 pm
No love for the Minnesota/Wisconsin battle for Paul Bunyan’s Ax?
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Hawkeye - I’m not sure if you’re a Gopher or a Hawk, but I’ll guess Gopher based on that comment.
What about Floyd of Rosedale? Iowa’s only Rivalry trophy until right about the time I left and they created the Heartland trophy between Iowa and Wisc…
Everything we play for is some form of a pig…
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:48 pm
I believe TBL is the only one here that has hatred for the Pirates. I’m just glad they got rid of those fugly red vests.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
I’m going with the Iron Bowl as the biggest rivalry. Lloyd Carr didn’t get canned for being owned by the sweatervest, but Bill Curry got run out of Tuscaloosa because he couldn’t beat Auburn. Alabama won the NC with his players under Stallings.
July 2nd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
SC - I thought about Floyd or the Little Brown Jug, but there is a special dislike with the Minny/Wisky game.
Besides, I’d rather forget about last year’s Minny/Iowa game
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:02 pm
Yeah but Cooper is still reviled in Columbus, mostly because of his efforts against the maize and blue (and in bowls).
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Truckers are weird folk. I just had to help some trucker that was late picking up the last shipment of the day load it onto his truck…wow. I understand 3 words he said. And one of those was ‘Hey.’ And he had the Drew Gooden Special, shaved head with a rat-tail, and hilariously corny tats. Couldn’t have been any more redneck unless he had a mullet.
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:09 pm
Agreed cursed, but it’s gotta go both ways IMO.
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Can someone please PLEASE give the Rockets good news? No Yao, No Artest and No T-mac next year. Ugh.
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Your third point is what if not good news?
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:31 pm
You answered your own question.
July 2nd, 2009 at 9:51 pm
I work for a small magazine in Beverly Hills. One of my coworkers is always out checking out hot women. He somehow brings one in today and introduces her to everyone. We’re all puzzled. After he walks her out, he comes back in and says that she’s a prostitute that he met at the starbucks nearby.
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:21 pm
ARTEST TO LAKERS!
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Ariza commits to the Rockets per Boston Globe
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Late on that one, Karm.
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:23 pm
Wonder how much they’re gonna overpay him by. Will he be more or less overpaid than Ben Gordon? I say less on the basis that he can do something other than shoot.
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:31 pm
Ariza was a good fit in a good situation. Most of his points came from Kobe being doubled or tripled.
Artest is definetly an upgrade, and I’m pretty sure Kobe and Phil will ingrain in his head that to win, he can’t jack up random shots.
Cleveland won’t be getting Ariza, Rockets beat them to it.
Sheed to Boston doesn’t make them that much stronger.
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:32 pm
Rockets got Ariza…
Sucks for Cavs.
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Radio here is reporting that the Cavs are inquiring about Deng? How the fuck does that work?
Wouldn’t that put them wayyyyy over the cap?
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Sucks for Cavs.
Morey obviously made this deal, because everybody was offering the same $$$.
Deng is under contract (a big, terrible contract) in Chicago, so they’d have to trade for him. Maybe for Ilgauskus. I don’t know why Chicago would deal for that old stiff though. Cleveland doesn’t really have much to trade, since right now they’ve only got 9 dudes, and no other salaries to match, unless they give away Mo Williams.
July 2nd, 2009 at 10:43 pm
eh, terrible - 5 years left, 60 million more. It’s not so terrible now that that’s what Ben Gordon is making.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:05 pm
Haven’t heard the Deng talk (once the only guy preventing Kobe from coming to the Windy City), but the only way that’s going down is a sign and trade with AV. So then the Cavs have nothing in the way of a PF and two of the slowest centers in the league to defend the pick and roll. Good luck.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Hmmm, they need a PF. Who could they possibly go after? Jamison? Or is he unavailable now?
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:14 pm
$33M for 5 years of a guy who can’t really shoot or create his own shot but is kinda sorta okay on defense? Great…
I’m still waiting for good news about the Rockets.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:16 pm
Oh and the Bulls already have AV, in NOAH, so that makes no sense.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:16 pm
I take back my previous statement upon further consideration. Jamison can’t be a PF. Definite SF.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:19 pm
Doug Collins pulls name out of Pistons coaching consideration. Avery Johnson now leading candidate.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:22 pm
That was fun.

July 2nd, 2009 at 11:39 pm
I don’t really understand why Ariza would leave L.A. you just won an NBA title and they were offerring around the same amount of cash as everyone else plus you were playing for your home town team.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:40 pm
Promote the intern. Now.
Nice pair, kid.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:43 pm
Okay, let me brainstorm with you guys: Are there more than six teams you should care about in the NBA?
LA, Cleveland, Orlando, San An, and Boston. And that’s all I got. (Maybe Denver?)
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:44 pm
Portland should they sign Hedo.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:48 pm
I’m a Sixers fan and I even think they’re boring as hell to watch.
But otherwise, Portland should be added. They’re fun, and I’m a Steve Blake fan. Then again, I’ll take college hoops of the NBA any day of the week.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Every team. At least, that’s what TBL told me. You know, since the NBA has a salary cap and all.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:53 pm
Fucking Bobby Abreu. Hits four homers all season, then goes all HR-Derby on us and hits two. Douchebag.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:53 pm
The Atlanta Hawks. Josh Smith is the perfect combination of crazy good and just plain crazy. He’s a never ending roller coaster.
July 2nd, 2009 at 11:55 pm
lefty- how many more years of Al Horford do they have? Joe Johnson?
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:00 am
They have at least 2 or 3 more years of Horford, I think, since he’s still on his rookie contract and it was his 2nd year. Johnson can be a FA next year I think, if he opts out. At least I think I remember hearing that.
Still think the Suns are morons for not paying him.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:01 am
Of course, you weren’t asking me, my bad.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:04 am
Damn, The Dead Girl and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead on at the same time. Works for me. I don’t know why I got back into newspapers, having to work on holidays and shit is the pits.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:07 am
SC - Billy’s right about Horford, and Joe’s a FA after next season. This will sound crazy, but he’s replaceable. The success or failure of that team depends on which J-Smoove shows up on a given night.
On another note, phenomenal work Andy. That’s top notch stuff. As I wrote in another place (not linking it, to avoid ssp and bannin’), my opinion is that how a site treats its commenters affects non-commenters’ perception of that site.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:10 am
Jeez, I can’t believe it’s been that long since Johnson signed that deal. I feel old.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:12 am
Wow I always thought RockYouLikeAIracane was actually Iracane.
That site sucks so fucking bad now, I used to love it, and now it’s trash. After they posted a bullshit blurb about Bowmeister getting traded and put a tag on it like ‘this really happened’, I lost all remaining faith, they have absolutely no idea about any thing outside of Philadelphia sports and Erin Andrews.
Oh well, the cool kids from there splintered off long ago and formed their own little soccer haven, so fuck it.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:20 am
I have mixed feelings on that site. They treat their commenters like shit which sucks. But, they still get some pretty good tips and post some decent stuff.
I dislike it more than I like it because of the commenter thing, because as lefty said, that affects facets of their site that I don’t believe they intended it to.
It’s definitely not what it used to be… But, I never commented there. Only here.
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:28 am
SC - Not sure if you read my (way too) long form stream of consciousness on the whole thing (you know where to find it, if not), but the gist is this: post-Leitch Deadspin had driven me partially away, and the comment ninjas finished the job. I probably read something on that site once or twice a week, and that’s mostly because somebody IMs me a link.
July 3rd, 2009 at 1:14 am
Thanks, guys, for the suggestion and the good words.
I’ll be around.
July 3rd, 2009 at 3:54 am
For the morning crowd I guess: got a text from a girl tonight that read “I wont ass” I can figure out if that is a drunk “I want ass” or if she is saying she wont do something else and then calling me an ass.
July 3rd, 2009 at 4:17 am
Only one way to find out, put it in her ass.
