Steve McNair Found Dead
NFL retirees July 4th. 2009, 7:21pm
Sad news out of Tennessee as Steve McNair and an unidentified woman were found shot and killed in Nashville today. Details are non-existent and no one has been arrested.
McNair was co-MVP in 2003 and was selected to 3 Pro-Bowls during his career. He also quarterbacked the Titans to their only Super Bowl appearance. He was 36.

this whole thing is very weird and sad. i hope they find out who was behind this or what caused this.
July 4th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
Ed McMahon, Farah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, Billy Mays, Karl Malden, Alexis Arguello, and now McNair. This has been an incredible two-week run.
In addition, Fred Travalena died, as well as Willie Roaf’s mom, who was the first black female justice on the Arkansas Supreme Court.

McNair was a good guy. Shame that he had to go out this way and at such a young age. 36?

Anyone up watching Roddick actually challenge Federer for a change?
July 5th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Yes. It figures that now will be the time that he decides to show up.
On an unrelated note, I submit this link, figuring that there will be no roundup today.
There is no doubt in my mind that TBL wrote this column under a pen-name. Look at #’s 1 and 2!
July 5th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Yeah, Nicks at #2 gives that away.
Roddick’s going Cleveland in this tiebreaker
July 5th, 2009 at 10:33 am
If Federer can come back from 2-6 in the 2nd set tiebreaker, Roddick’s blown his chance
July 5th, 2009 at 10:34 am
Game. Set. Match.
July 5th, 2009 at 10:38 am
Forget Cleveland.
Roddick just went Jana Novotna all over himself.
/look it up
July 5th, 2009 at 10:40 am
Had a friend in college who used to work at the same gym in Austin Roddick would frequent. Gives me even more of a reason to root for him. That and the old SportsCenter commercial.
“Stu, I’m a little upset you didn’t use my nickname on SC tonight.”
“What’s you’re nickname?”
“A-Rod” ( etc. )
/close enough
July 5th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Roddick tried to choke this thing away, but Federer’s not breaking Roddick’s serve. He can still win this thing
July 5th, 2009 at 10:57 am
So is this really live? Am I supposed to believe they didn’t cut away from the female doubles to join this the mens singles in tape delay?
July 5th, 2009 at 11:01 am
not that anyone cares but RIP NASCAR. the hallowed grounds of NASCAR at Daytona had the whole back stretch of stands empty. as much as brian france wants to believe its just the economy, hes dead wrong. people are tired of the way hes running things and it showed last night. last nights race was a joke and it falls squarely on his hands for making that piece of shit car named the CAR OF TOMORROW. people are sick of the way hes running NASCAR into the ground and if he doesn’t change things, the stands are going to be as empty as an IRL race
/end rant
July 5th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Texas,
I’m not a NASCAR guy, I’ve actually been to daytona though. But was last night not an awesome finish? I thought that was pretty exciting, and with the restrictor plates, it guarantees great finishes like that – so what was wrong with the ending? Why do purists hate it?
July 5th, 2009 at 11:10 am
the ending was awesome but the whole race was bland. the ending didnt make up for it. i love restrictor plate racing as much as the next guy
July 5th, 2009 at 11:24 am
Federer’s gonna win this thing and not break Roddick’s serve once. Amazing.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:25 am
TexansFan,
I’m going to the Brickyard in 3 weeks. My first NASCAR race. All I can say is, there are plenty of good seats still available.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:45 am
This is actually why I’m not too interested in Tennis anymore. Two guys never getting their serve broken definitely takes away from the intrigue. They’re just too good and serve too fast.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:50 am
my best friend is the biggest titan fan, as well as mcnair. hes at rothbury and i had to call and calm him down. this sucks, one of the first QB’s i actually loved since i moved over to the states.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:51 am
cursed, so true.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:54 am
It’s going to 5. Federer still hasn’t broke. It definitely doesn’t have the intrigue of last year’s match though.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Gotta give Roddick props. For a guy who has been a mental case for much of his career, he’s rebounded nicely since that debacle in the 2nd set tiebreak.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Everybody’s forgotten about David Carradine. So I think another athlete is on deck to complete this third trilogy of dead celebs.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:58 am
jay, based off what happened last year with the tire fiasco, i think that was a HUGE mistake. i hope goodyear corrected the problem but you can only do so much with this new car. i hope you get your money worth instead of having a caution every 10 laps because the tires EXPLODE

texansfan,
I have a good friend who lives near Indy, and his wife gets tickets through her work. Basically, I’m just paying for airfare for me and my wife, and I get to see a friend to boot.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Federer blew that opportunity for a break.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
This 5th set might go a while, given Federer hasn’t broke yet
/assuming Federer’s gonna win
July 5th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
It would be appropriate that the only serve that Federer breaks would be Roddick’s last one
/also assuming Federer’s gonna win
//but I think Roddick’s the better player today
July 5th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
After a nasty 4-5 game, I’m going with Roddick. Federer isn’t breaking.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
I dont’ know what’s more sad… that McNair died or my friends and I have been cracking jokes about his death this entire holiday weekend.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
NDUB, what’s more sad is that you haven’t bothered to share the jokes with the rest of the TBL community.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
This match is fucking great. Roddick needs to break in the next few games or advantage swings back to Federer.
Something feels wrong talking about tennis in this thread…

July 5th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Is there a play by play announcer? I only hear McEnroe. Can we show some excitement?
July 5th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
I know I’m gonna be in the minority here, but I’m not afraid. I’m tired of of them throwing out the “warrior” label to describe him. I was sick of it when he was alive, and I’m sick of it now that he’s gone. Everybody gets hurt. You play through it. Like all of the other NFL players wake up in the morning feeling dandy. But most of them didn’t miss 3-4 weeks at a time. And sooner or later, if your “style” causes you to get yourself brutalized, you change your style or don’t complain about it.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Another Roddick choke. That’s twice.
One point away from serving for the championship, having never been broken. You can’t keep letting him off the hook
July 5th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
I got pulled in wanting to see Roddick win, but, for Roddick to only break Federer’s serve 2 times and Federer having not done it to this point is just pretty damn boring. I’m sure this will be called an epic an all that and I’m probably in the minority, but to call this match “good” would seem silly to me.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
You can’t just simply trade points from here on out if you want to win.

July 5th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Nice of NBC to not show the replay. B/c we’d all rather see computer animated renderings of what probably happened.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Cuse/UConn was a good game before all the OTs, though. So, yeah, the basketball in the OTs obviously slipped in terms of quality, but it was coming to end a good game. This tennis match hasn’t been good before all these tiebreak games.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
This is like a football game where neither team can play a lick of defense, each team scores a touchdown every time it goes down the field, and the game will be decided on a missed extra point
July 5th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
It sucks that all Federer has to do is break once and he wins. One break the entire match and he wins? That’s crap.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
I’m a little slow, How was the first set 7-5 if Federer didn’t break Roddick serve yet?
July 5th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
The sad thing is that Roddick should already be on the plane with the championship trophy–after the 4th set.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Federer hasn’t broken serve
I think Roddick has 3
July 5th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Roddick has 2, I believe. One in the first set and then the one to go up 3-1 in the 4th set.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:04 pm

July 5th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Federer must have like 2 reserve tanks. He is digging so deep now.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Maybe they should just flip a coin to determine serve, play one game, and let that determine the winner.
/NFL’d
July 5th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
OK so it this match not evidence that perhaps, technology is a little ahead of the game or that maybe the dimensions on the court don’t work out at Wimbledon and that something needs to be changed either way? This is terrible.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Wow that’s one of the most dominant games you’ll ever see.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Or maybe ‘Roddickulous!’
July 5th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
moleman,
Any chance that the headline reads “Andy Serves Notice” or “Federer Gets Served?”
July 5th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
This is going to come down to unforced errors and fatigue. Neither player can touch the others serve.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
cursed, I think the dimensions of the court need to be changed. I don’t think it is just Wimbledon. I mean, this is an extreme example of the serve being dominant, but this is pretty much the plague on the sport right now.
That said, I don’t really know how to change the court because I stopped watching consistently a long time ago. But, they need some kind of change.

July 5th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Gotta give it to Roddick, pressure has been on him to answer the entire match it seems. And he’s come through everytime.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
However, if he loses it, all he has to do is look back at when he was up 6-2 on the tiebreaker in the 2nd set and lost
July 5th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
True Jay. I tuned in after the second set.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Today is a combination of several things. Conditions are dry and warm, which has sped the grass up to levels not seen in 15-20 years. (This is how Wimbledon used to play every year… Serve and volley won the goods.) The best player in the world is gritting out a day when he is not at his best during ground strokes. Roddick is playing his best match ever. He absolutely cannot miss, and that has never been his strength.
Not the BEST match I’ve ever seen, but it is getting better now. Every game means the title.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
if i was wearing pants, this match would have bored them off about an hour ago.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
This is Arena Tennis. The only thing missing is a net behind the players to bounce the long balls back into play
July 5th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Yeah but I thought old school Wimbledon had much more net play. These guys are just living on the baseline right? I haven’t seen too many slams at the net.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
You’re right. Neither guy has adjusted to come more to the net. I would think Federer would at least try it on Roddick’s serve, but Andy isn’t giving openings to do so. It’s also not in the repetoire of the greats now as it was when Borg, McEnroe and the greats of the 80’s played…
July 5th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Roddick putting on a serving clinic. Needed two big ones there at 0-30.
Fucking Deuce. Needs two more.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
NBC master control will be hearing from me if this runs into the Hy Vee Triathlon, which is scheduled to air at 3:00.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Absolute horseshit. Andy had the sun in his eyes.
Fuck that. Federer didn’t deserve to win.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
I hate announcer hyperbole, but it’s like Federer just willed himself to victory on a day when he was not the better player.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Choke.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
There’s a picnic table sitting behind Sampras?
July 5th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
So Fed wins the French sans Nadal, then goes on to eke out the narrowest of wins versus a sub-par opponent.
Dare I say fraud?
July 5th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
As referenced earlier, Jana Novotna choked. Roddick blew it.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
What the hell is wrong with you people? This was a great match. Would it have been better if Roger ran through him straight sets?
Nice to see the Swoosh giving Roger some love as well.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
Yeah I guess that’s the right way of putting it. His unforced errors the last four games were really really bad. Once it hit twelve it kind of had an inevitable feeling, Roddick wasn’t getting him to Deuce and Fed was.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
You can say it… You would also be completely wrong.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Clown, read the thread to find out what was wrong. Don’t confuse duration with greatness, they’re not necessarily one in the same.

July 5th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Not final yet. And they’ll pay whatever they have to in order to retain Barker if they did screw up. Versteeg would the one that goes. Pretty sure that they got it right, though.
July 5th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
I don’t think so, otherwise it would have been killed already, but the issue is whether it was an honest mistake or not (apparently). Seems like it was a delivery problem, like they didn’t use the right medium. Either way it’s in the NHLPA’s hands now, will be interesting to see what they do as their interest is for the players to get paid, and obviously enforcing the rule will get them paid more. Only time I remember this happening was when the Devils fucked up. I’m just goading you though, there’s no way they lose both of them.
