Media Moves: Marc Spears Leaves the Boston Globe For Yahoo Sports
ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings, NBA July 6th. 2009, 6:49pm
If you been paying attention to the dizzying last month of news and trades in the NBA, then you’ve probably also noticed a little battle brewing between Yahoo Sports and the 8-man armada of ESPN. Yahoo’s been cleaning up in scooping the biggest news – Shaq to the Cavs, Yao likely done for the next season, and Richard Jefferson to the Spurs. And they just beat ESPN again – we hear that today, Yahoo hired Marc Spears of the Boston Globe. Last night, Spears broke the Rasheed Wallace-to-Boston story.
When reached on vacation in New Orleans, Spears said, “I’d like to thank the Boston Globe for everything they’ve done for me. It’s a fantastic paper. I’m hoping and praying that everything in the future works out in the right direction. I’m looking forward to going to a great website.”
Perhaps the best story we’ve heard about Spears, who is 6-foot-7, involves Tony Allen of the Celtics. As we hear it, Allen was furious at Spears’ reporting of this story, and let Spears know about it in the locker room, saying, “Keep my name out your mouth.” Spears stood his ground and responded calmly, saying, “Tony …,” which infuriated Allen. Eventually, Allen, who is only 6-foot-4, backed down. (Some of the story is captured here.)
When asked about the confrontation with Allen, Spears laughed and said it was water under the bridge.

/fixed to make it look like they got the story first
//too easy
July 6th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Did Yahoo break the Shaq story? There was some discussion about that with those in the know, debating if it were Yahoo or Brian Windhorst. I couldn’t find evidence either way.
July 6th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
cursed,
Broussard at ESPN had the “Shaq to Cavs talk heating up” scoop like 2 weeks before it happened.
I was here when the actual trade went down, and I distinctly remember ESPN not breaking it first. When the first link was posted in a reply on this page, ESPN definitely did not have it yet.
July 6th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
can espn take credit since they said the story was eveloping for like a month before it happened?
July 6th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
my friend told me he just heard a crazy rumor that Nadal’s knees are fine and that the absences might be linked to PEDs. I told him he must have read it off of RogerFedererisGodandNadalisnt.com
July 6th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Spears used to work for the Denver Post and do local radio. Always sounded as if he’d just woken up after a bender.
I could relate. To the bender part, anyway.
July 6th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Spears sounds like he’s cut from the Will McDonough mold. I like it.
July 6th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Spears’ mugshot looks 1988ish.

/cool story about not backing down though

I like how TBL uses heights to determine the winners in fights he envisions in his head.
July 6th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Sources say and ESPN’s Tim Legler has learned that Yahoo hired Marc Spears of the Boston Globe.
Jay, this is how they do it
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4285489
Hope he doesn’t go into the witness protection program like ex Boston Glober Michael Smith seems to have done. Guy was on every 15 minutes two years ago, fill-in hosting Matzah and Meatball, on NFL Live 3 days/week. Now, he’s on once/month if he’s (we’re) lucky.

also, how many nasty emails did you get from nerdy mets fans? I’m trying to unload D Wright in fantasy

July 6th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
@TBL: Yeah, McDonough knocked him out in the locker room, right? That dude played for keeps.
Not many nasty Met emails, most of the ones I have spoken to have already tuned out the baseball season altogether.

Raymond Clayborn, and Willie D took him to the woodshed.

All the national clowns said it looked like Ariza was going to the Cavs, and if not him then Artest. Meanwhile Windhorst always said both were a longshot. He was unable to beat cursed for the “LeBron” using the N-word story though.
July 6th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
Montell Jordan would beat Spears’ ass.

Ehh, story was such a letdown, so many people don’t think it’s him, while I think it couldn’t sound more like him. If it’s a LeBron imposter, he’s better than Caliendo and Rich Little combined. Video has 60,000 hits though, so that’s ok. Good race war going in the comments, which is always humorous.

Just listened. That’s supposed to be LeBron? What?????
July 6th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
By the way, liked Donell Jones more than Montell.
July 6th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
Cursed, I see the link to the intro on the Mixtape as well but that doesn’t sound anything like LeBron to me.
July 6th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
cursed the problem is most people dont think its him, and even if its him no one cares. you even said you dont care.
ive heard some recent rumors about lebron that people would actually care about. youve probably heard the same.
July 6th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
I’m willing to bet money that tomorrow the Phils will score 3 or less runs.
July 6th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
SportsHernia, he’s not in the studio cutting those liners. Have you ever heard LeBron on the phone or through an ISDN line, the tone is bound to sound a little different.
And I’ve been listening to the dude since he was 15 – it’s him. DJ Whoo Kid is kind of a big deal, and he’s not going to risk his career by using LeBron’s likeness on his mixtapes and on his new radio show.
it’s him. I’ll wager any of Bernie Kosar’s debts on it.
July 6th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
I know exactly where you’re going with that. I think it’s going to blow out bigtime. But I’m not putting my name behind it..at this point.
As far as the LeBron “N” word thing, I could care less, you’re right. But people do care about the “N” word still. It still sparks a debate with a bunch of people. And LeBron is one of the most famous dudes out there, so if he’s using the term, people will talk about whether he should be using the term.

you have ’something for the honeys’ on your ipod? that’s diggin’ deep. how many songs do you have?
i’m not even at 500, but i wouldn’t deign to have that garbage on my ipod. i do have 2 songs from ‘Pink’ though. hell, i just downloaded my first AA Rejects song, and i now have 2 from Jack Johnson.
i imagine i’ll have tons more songs thanks to shazam, which is the greatest thing about the iphone
July 6th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
I’ll just throw this out there, and Im sure it will be received with profound insight but,
The performance by the US in the confederations is going to get people PAID. gooch linked with real madrid? even if it doesn’t happen but it’s real interest, thats laughable. I love the US but thats a big reach and would not turn out well.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Mancitys -
Here’s hoping guys like Gooch get paid by some mid-level teams that will play them. We don’t need guys like Gooch, Bradley, Davies, Jozy get money and bench time. We need them to play… A LOT. The more the better to get ready for next year in South Africa…
July 6th, 2009 at 9:09 pm
TSH, you should read this interview. You’ll like AK even more.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
Also, spending some quality time with the Reds tonight. They are down 16-1 to the Phillies in the 6th.
While I enjoy a good Reds’ ass beating as much as any other guy, FSN Ohio is doing a nice job with time filler talking and showing highlights of Harry Kalas’ career. Damn, he was good. That’s a huge loss, but I’m very glad he got to see a title before he passed…
July 6th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
Just downloaded it the other day, pretty awesome.

Liked the movie more than most guys I know, the father in it was HYSTERICAL.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
That movie actually wasn’t bad at all. Most movies based on Shakespeare have to try real hard to be bad.

July 6th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
@wallys
Couldnt agree more. I just want Dempsey to sign a one year deal, keep his transfer value, play out this season leading inot the world cup and then they can sell him. I do think its important for davies to move on to a better league. Training will be high, and he appears to have a game similar to Jozy’s in that they’re not nearly as affected by the rust as say, a clint dempsey or freddy adu. If he can get into the german league, or really anywhere south of where he is now, would be great for him.
I’m at a loss for freddy. I don’t know where he should go but he needs minutes.

Love the Pirates. Spot start every pitcher you can against them, the As, San Fran, San Diego, and Kansas City and riches will be yours.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
Don’t let ‘em give you any shit TBL. Nothing wrong with the AA Rejects. The last two albums kinda sucked, but before that, it was alright. And if anybody gives you grief over Lisa Lisa, they’re full of it. I guarantee if they know who that is, they also know all the words.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
4-5, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, BB
Shane Victorino’s current line in the Phillies raping of the Reds.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Not yet. $20 the NHL tells the Players’ Assoc. to eff off. They filed a grievance. The NHL itself had no problems with it today. NHLPA is the body that is throwing a tantrum over it.
Remember what happened the last time the owners and players went head to head? I think the owners won that battle…
July 6th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Jayson Werth Grand Slam, now it’s 5 R for Victorino. 22-1.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Over this issue? The NHLPA won and the Devils had to pay out big time.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Which is so much worse than the Yankees best ERA in their rotation … a paltry 3.83.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
That was 15 years ago. The power is in the hands of the owners now. I’m not worried until I see resolution from the NHLPA.
I think Versteeg will be fine. The Barker signing is just like the TSN headline says, “Avoiding a headache.”
July 6th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
here’s why the pirates suck. hampton opens the 6th with a 4 pitch walk to mccutchen. jack wilson swings at the first pitch he sees. i swear to christ not one hitter on that team has any semblance of an approach at the plate.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Yeah but I mean can they afford to give him a raise? They can’t have much cap room left.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Understatement. We have NO cap room left. Makes me scared for next off-season.
I think the QO they sent out to Versteeg will hold up. We’ll get draft picks if someone signs him to a larger deal. NHLPA won’t win this battle.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
I hope they do
Pittsburgh has enough cap room to sign him!
July 6th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
Why does Hampton own the Pirates? They have 1 fucking hit tonight, and he’s 3-0 with an ERA under 1 against us this year.

Yeah I don’t see how Kane stays, even if Campbell is moved (someone will be dumb enough to take that deal).
Next offseason is gonna be the tits, there are gonna be so many firesales.
July 6th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
If Kane does leave, it will suck. But, they need to get that kid in a weight training program this off-season. There are games that he goes out there and just looks lifeless.
He’s SO much smaller than everyone on the ice.

It’s not a joke, I know of at least 3 HOAs in my area that ban basketball hoops over garages. Also, a good HOA doesn’t exist. Sure, the rationale for a HOA is good, but HOA’s only function to enable the sanctimonious, retired pricks of the world to drown working people in technicalities. My brother’s HOA banned charcoal grills…gas only. Seriously, wtf?

You can’t buy a handgun from any licensed gun dealer if you are under 21. She must have either gotten it from a ‘black market’ dealer, or someone reallllly fucked up at a gun shop.
