Yardwork: Even Bud Isn’t Baffled Going Into The Break
Baseball July 13th. 2009, 11:15am
Heading into the All-Star break, the Dodgers have the best record in the NL, the Red Sox have the best record in the AL, the Yankees lead the AL Wildcard and the Nationals have fired their manager. Crazy! One story that sticks out for me — even with Barry Zito being Barry Zito, the Giants are leading the NL Wildcard by two games and have the second-best record in the NL.
Red Sox 6, Royals 0: Josh Beckett gifted his bullpen with an extra day off in the form of complete game dominance (9 IP, 3 H, 7 K) going into the break.
Dodgers 7, Brewers 4: The Dodgers cruise into the break having won seven of their last 10. They’re 24 games over .500. I will now pick my nose in honor of Joe Torre.
Tigers 10, Indians 1: Verlander won his 10th and Clete Thomas, who might very well be the owner of the best profile pic in baseball, drove in five runs.
Cubs 7, Cards 3: Zambrano went yard in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
Cards 4, Cubs 2: Ryan Ludwick hit two homers, Wainwright went eight strong and Ryan Franklin struck out the side to save it. His facial hair and ERA continue to be tremendous.
Mets 9, Reds 7: Frenchy is batting .444 since becoming a Met!
O’s 4, Blue Jays 2: Marc Rzepczynski, an up-and-coming student at the Doug Mientkiewicz school of spelling, pitched decently in his second start of the year, but the Toronto bats couldn’t do much against Brad Bergesen and the O’s bullpen.
Twins 13, White Sox 7: The Sox, and Mark Buehrle in particular, received a beatdown at the hands of Denard Span, Brendan Harris and Carlos Gómez, who combined for all 11 Minnesota RBIs.
Angels 5, Yanks 4: The Yankee heading to Anaheim for three before the All-Star break reeked of an Angels sweep, and that’s exactly what happened.
Phils 5, Pirates 2: Pedro Feliz hit a grand slam in the first and the Phils never looked back. J.A. Happ improved to 6-0 with an ERA of 2.90.
Rockies 8, Braves 7: Brad Hawpe hit a walk-off RBI double to win it for the Rockies, a fitting way for him to head into the All-Star game. Ryan Church is batting .111 since becoming a Brave.
Padres 10, Giants 4: Barry Zito gave up 10 hits, 9 earned runs and two homers in 4 1/3 innings of ‘work’. A rather fitting way for him to go home for the All-Star break.
Marlins 8, D-Backs 1: Josh Johnson has been insanely consistent this year — he’s given up three runs or less in 18 of his 19 starts.
Astros 5, Nats 0: The Nationals have 26 wins.
Nothing tonight will come close to topping the jheri curl mullet sported by Juan Gonzalez in 1993:

Nice to see the AL got the lineup right. Ive given up my Ichiro shouldn’t hit leadoff stance, too much effort is required in that one.

When the Yanks beat the Angels I’ll die of shock. Lost 17 of the last 22 in Anaheim or something similar.

juan gone might have been on the juice but he sure was fun to watch.

“But fetch, he has SPEED! He can hit homers, but he choses not to!”

That entire Rangers team was on the juice.

I think the Giants are going to make the playoffs. They have a solid staff and wouldn’t be surprised to see them make some more moves closer to the deadline.

MLB Network showed some classic AS Game highlights. They used to have a skills competition in addition to the HR Derby. They had a Hit for Accuracy and Catcher Throw for Accuracy. It was pretty cool, and something they should bring back.
The HR Derby has been ruined for me. It’s just as long as a regular game, and nobody cares once the first round is over. They should either just cut it down to one round and be done with it, or at the most one round and then the finals.
/I’ll still watch tonight though, at least until I fall asleep on the couch

fucking reds suck ass
July 13th, 2009 at 11:41 am
i thought burrell would start coming around. hes notorious for having a horrible half a season and a really good other half.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:44 am
Is Pedro to Philly a done deal? That has “worst move of the season” potential.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:45 am
blazers – i was thinking this weekend that the Reds would be my team in 2010. potential rotation: Arroyo, Volquez, Cueto, Harang. That’s a pretty good 4-some. and what about homer bailey?
The bats are touch and go – will Encarnacion ever get it together? – and the minor league system has some decent talent.
cincy in 2010?
July 13th, 2009 at 11:45 am
i should add that it’s going to be tough to overtake the young cards and cubs. both spend $

Rosenthal said during the Fox Saturday Game that all Pedro had to do was pass a physical. He also said it wasn’t for all that much. I don’t have a lot of hope for Pedro either, but it’ll be hard to be worse than the Phillies fourth and fifth (and Cole HAMELS!) starters have been.

How is that? It’s not like they have to give up any prospects, it’s just money and the current staff is sucking right now. I think it is a shot and if it doesn’t work, cut him and walk away.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:50 am
yep. here he comes irish. he is going to be your favorite ray in the 2nd half.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:51 am
I doubt it
July 13th, 2009 at 11:51 am
dont get me wrong TBL, I agree with you. Im just frustrated as hell. Bailey will be in the rotation next year, and he will be very good. Im still wondering if they will have enough offense. Encarancion is a basket case, Wily Taveras sucks major ass, and we dont have a SS
July 13th, 2009 at 11:52 am
@Sparty
I hope so because my fantasy team needs some help in the HR department.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:52 am
potential rotation: Arroyo, Volquez, Cueto, Harang. That’s a pretty good 4-some.
Is that not the same rotation they have now?
and what about homer bailey?
He can’t throw strikes. Walks tend to catch up with pitchers in the show.
The bats are touch and go
They’re 14th in Runs and play in a sandbox…
July 13th, 2009 at 11:52 am
@ st bear. i think they scrapped the skills comp. after barry larkin got hurt participating in it.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:53 am
helloooooooooo? soriano? hello? hit the fucking ball!!!

Ryan Church is batting .111 since becoming a Brave
Reality will trump your small sample. At the very least they will soon both suck together.

Never underestimate the ability of Dusty Baker to ruin a young pitcher’s career.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Knew you’d love those stats.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:55 am
The city of St. Louis heartily disagrees with you about the spending money part. And overtaking the Cubs for what fourth place in the central?
July 13th, 2009 at 11:55 am
I Say 2011-2012 TBL. They have the pieces, but experience is key when talking about pitchers.
July 13th, 2009 at 11:57 am
Is Pedro to Philly a done deal?
As what? A mascot? Is he bringing the smallest man in the world with him?
Oh wait, as a pitcher?
July 13th, 2009 at 11:58 am
How do you give up nine earned runs to team that is so bad it was just no hit by Jonathan Sanchez?
July 13th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Both of them suck, not really sure what the braves or mets were thinking. At first, I was excited to get Frenchie the F out of ATL… but now I see no benefit at all, I was just full of spite.
July 13th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Jeff friggin Suppan has better numbers than Pedro the past 3 years. Pedro is D-O-N-E. Every start at the Bank will be a HR derby.
July 13th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
He’s not a better option than Rodrigo Lopez, in other words.
July 13th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
As a Phils fan, I’m not a fan of the move. Would rather see a AAA call up or Rodrigo Lopez at this point, than Pedro.
Would really rather see them concentrate on a Roy Halladay trade.

Obviously, TBL is not familiar with Cards owner Scrooge DeWitt. Spending money is not in his lexicon.
