Florida Fans, Just Be Aware Urban Meyer’s Pulled This ‘I’m Not Going Anywhere’ Stunt Before
College Football July 15th. 2009, 11:30am
You probably don’t remember this, but Urban Meyer once coached at Bowling Green. And back in December of 2002, he was a rising star in the coaching ranks, and Utah was interested. Here’s what Meyer told the media at the time:
“Everybody’s worried about those other places; nothings going on,” Meyer told the media last week in his final media gathering of the season. “I was contacted by one, but I’m not interested. I love it here. We have a lot of work to do. That’s the bottom line. The future is fantastic here . . . I’m proud to be the football coach here.”
Within days, Meyer bolted for Utah. This happens regularly in college football, and the coaches can’t be faulted. At the first hint that a coach might jump, rival coaches (and assistants, and players) plant stories with recruits in an effort to win them over. It’s probably not personal – though it might be if Lane Kiffin is involved – just business. Which is why our friends at Notre Dame scoffed at Meyer’s “I’m never going to Notre Dame, ever” comment the other day.
We’ll now put this story on the shelf (but in a visible spot!) until the Irish lose to Michigan or Michigan State and Weis’s head is on the chopping block once again.
Will he leave? Meyer receives permission to speak with Utah (BG Views via Crain’s Cleveland)

it’s harder to leave florida than BG or utah.
/haven’t we been over this already?

NFL > Florida > Utah > BG, not complicated.

Al Davis will swoop in and get him before the Irish.

Jerry Jones will swoop in and get him before the Irish.
/unless he gets Gruden first
//Most of NFL > Florida > Raiders

Well, I guess at least the mindless specualtion and making up shit is about college football.

Comparing FL to Bowling Green, eh?
He’s a God in Florida, with his pick of any recruit in a state loaded with football talent. If he goes to ND he’ll get a little more fame, but doesn’t ND also have a strict academic policy?
And again, the buyout for Fat Charles is huge.

There’s an easy way to solve it.
Is Jimmy Sexton his agent?
If it is, he’s gone. If Notre Dame offers him one dollar more than Florida.
/too lazy to look

I’m starting to think that even Pete Carroll, Jim Tressel, and Mack Brown would be convinced to leave their jobs by their agents if Middle Tennessee offered them more money.

I don;t want anything in common with Paolo….
ND would hate, and I MEAN HATE, to fire Weis. He should have been gone last year. I wanted him out, that’s for damn sure. But he cares about the community and the students there way more than the last 2 coaches. He is the perfect guy to be a ND football coach, except for, you know, winning games. I’ve talked to some of my friends from school. We don;t want Urb anymore. We’re vain like that. If Weis puts it together, fine. If not, we’d rather have Gruden. Shame we couldn’t get Gruden the first time.
/Still going 11-2 this season.
