Yardwork: Jason Marquis Has More Wins Than Roy Halladay
Baseball July 20th. 2009, 11:15am
Rockies 6, Padres 1: Jason Marquis is the majors’ first 12-game winner and the king of Jersey Shore necklaces. This is usually the type of season a guy like Marquis has that allows him to earn an absurd deal with a team like the Rockies where he then comes crashing back to reality. I can’t figure it out.
Rays 4, Royals 3: Pat Burrell was 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. He carried a man-purse to the plate for his third at-bat, and used a mini pool stick for his last at-bat.
Cards 2, D-Backs 1: Joel Piñeiro is a magician and should really be 17-0 instead of 8-9.
Braves 7, Mets 1: Mets starter Fernando Nieve left in the second inning after he was viciously attacked by a lion at first base. Javy Vázquez went seven and allowed one run on six hits.
Blue Jays 3, Red Sox 1: Roy Halladay dominated Boston on route to his fourth complete game of the year. The trade deadline is a week from Friday. Expect 637 Halladay updates on MLBTradeRumors between now and then.
Phils 5, Marlins 0: J.A. Happ improved to 7-0 after going seven scoreless innings and allowing just five hits. In his last five starts, he’s gone at least seven innings.
Yanks 2, Tigers 1: The Yankees swept the Tigers behind impressive back-to-back one-run wins over Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson. With that said, expect Baltimore youngster David Hernández to dominate them tonight. Oh, and the fist pump was back in full form yesterday.
Rangers 5, Twins 3: Ian Kinsler went deep twice, including a two-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the 12th. Still, he’s batting just .251 versus the .319 average he finished with in ‘08.
Giants 4, Pirates 3: Matt Cain improved to 11-2, has won nine of his last 10 decisions and, sadly, will never experience the joy of growing a beard.
Dodgers 4, Astros 3: LaTroy Hawkins hadn’t lost a game in over a month, it was bound to happen.
Angels 1, A’s 0: Brett Anderson, the living legend who many people on this site poured their heart out for when he shut down the Sox at Fenway, had a perfect game into the seventh before Bobby Abreu broke things up with a two-out single. Abreu spoiled things again with a homer in the top of the 10th.
Scary moment for San Diego’s Edgar Gonzalez, who was drilled in the ear hole of his helmet by a Jason Hammel fastball:

Bombers one game back of the sox…
July 20th, 2009 at 11:21 am
Eh, wins for a pitcher are about as meaningless a stat as rushing TD’s for a running back.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Does anyone else ever watch the Yahoo Sports Minute? Good God, this Ashley Russell is hot.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:24 am
Pat Burrell was 0-for-4 with four strikeouts
pathetic
Rays swept the Royals. White Sox up next
July 20th, 2009 at 11:25 am
I’ve never been big on wins vs. losses in any sport.
And Ashely Russell looks like a doll.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Oh jesus bsanders… she almost gave me a heart attack with those eyes.

I was at Sox/Jays game yesterday. There’s a petition being circulated by season ticket holders basically saying “If you trade Halladay, no matter what the return, we’re not renewing”. I spoke to one guy who was signing people up and he said they’re over 1500 signatures.

First off, I am shocked that there were 1500 season ticket holders for the Blue Jays. Secondly, like they are really going to do that. Of those 1500, do you really think that they won’t renew?

Tigers got exposed this weekend. The Central is really going to come down to the last weeks of the season.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:42 am
@irish. has burrell always been bad? i remember the rangers one year talking about trying to acquire him to play cf.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:47 am
I’m assuming there has got to be a Mike Vick post coming soon. I mean, the man is free today right?
July 20th, 2009 at 11:47 am
Sounds like the DH would’ve saved him.
I wish more of these injuries to the Mets would happen to the Phillies. Jesus.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:47 am
CF???? Burrell couldn’t play CF for a high-school team.

Tigers were 1-26 with RISP!!! @#$%@^*!

Burrell isn’t this bad, but he definitely isn’t earning his pay. Dude will never hit for .300, but has consistently hit over 20HR and 80 RBI past couple years.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:48 am
@shawn- no. I rip him because he isn’t producing for my fave team. It doesn’t help that he makes $7 mill a year
July 20th, 2009 at 11:48 am
he could have never played centerfield, his range is god awful
July 20th, 2009 at 11:50 am
Please replace Erin Mandrews with her immediately.

2001- 2008. A lot of people are saying it is the American League pitching. who knows. He sucks
July 20th, 2009 at 11:53 am
its true they can now make life like robots. little too much of a resemblance to joan rivers.

There’s a fairly solid season ticket base in Toronto. As for whether people follow through, who knows? Even if half of them do, that’s significant because there won’t be anyone lining up to take their seats.
It was a bi-polar experience yesterday. Fans were all positive in rooting Doc on throughout the game. On the flip side, people were foaming at the mouths about Ricciardi & ownership not being able to surround the (arguably) best pitcher in basesball with a competitive team.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:56 am
could just be the fact he has millions of dollars and a world series win and has little to no drive left in him.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:57 am
@bsanders: I know what you mean. Still shocking to me he’s found any kind of success with the Rockies.
July 20th, 2009 at 11:57 am
cubs 4 in a row. gonna make it 5 today!
/whoooo!
//high five!

I suspect getting booed every night for two years is motivation enough to be functional if you can be functional. No one wants to be Andruw Jones circa 2008.
Listening to these people probably not the best way to build a winning baseball team (not that Riccardi has proven he can do this while not listening to these people).
July 20th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Ricciardi is apparently out of the picture in terms of the trading or not trading Halladay decision. Ricciardi is out of here at the end of the season. Ricciardi might be taking the offers from other teams but the decision on whether to accept is coming from above him (Paul Beeston). This is a good thing.

There is so much faith in Jason Marquis that I was able to pick up in my fantasy league 2 starts ago
July 20th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Marquis a FA this year. Will be funny to see who gives him a contract.
July 20th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Not as funny as when the Cubs gave him that last contract.
July 20th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I hope he goes to the AL so he can have a 6 ERA
July 20th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I wish there was one more week of interleague and that fat shit was batting so he could take a fastball upside the head like that Padres guy. Joba can go eat another swiss cake roll and choke on it.
July 20th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Paging Mr. Dombrowski: Somebody had better be looking to pick up a freakin’ bat for the team. The pitching is back in good form, the hitting absolutely sucks. Goodbye, Mr. Ordonez, once upon a time we loved both you and your lovely locks.

“Not as funny as when the Cubs gave him that last contract.”
He was overpaid, but a very serviceable #5 starter. Cubs, this year, miss his bat more then anything else.
