USA Today’s Christine Brennan on the Erin Andrews Situation: “Women sports journalists need to be smart and not play to the frat house.”

With the exception of a few male journalists, very few media members have spoken out about the creepy Erin Andrews hotel videos that have made ESPN sideline reporter a fixture in the national media for the last 48 hours. Last night, via twitter and facebook, USA Today’s award-winning sports columnist, Christine Brennan, weighed in:
On the Erin Andrews situation, a quick thought for those who have asked: There are hundreds of women covering sports in this country who haven’t had this happen to them. I wish it didn’t happen to Erin, but I also would suggest to her if she asked (and she hasn’t) that she rely on her talent and brains and not succumb to the lowest common denominator in sports media by playing to the frat house.
That entire message was posted on Brennan’s facebook; some of it was captured on her Twitter.

They bust their asses as barely-attractive or even unattractive women in a world where they know they will be treated like dogshit, only to know that they are just blazing the trail for the next generation of pin-up babes that are replacing them.

Of course, she wasn’t asking for it, but anyone who thinks she doesn’t use her sexuality to her advantage is being naive. It’s the largest portion of her meal ticket, why wouldn’t she? But you gotta expect their to be a downside of playing that up.
As for her curling her hair naked, I don’t think it’s that uncommon. Some women — usually the hot ones — are quite comfortable with their bodies. I’ve seen quite a few do their entire morning routine in the nude. Sure, if you have tucks and folds you’re not going to want to see that reflected back at ya.

The only thing i disagree with Jay about is that Erin Andrews does not compare to Brennan Tafoya or MacMullen. They are reporters. She does puff pieces in cute outfits.
She may like sports, but she’s not a reporter. She may appear at sports, but she’s not reporting sports. She’s a hottie with a microphone (and a curling iron).

There is a huge pocket of lust that exists for Erin Andrews, and it is not new. She’s never toned it down, even a bit, to try and play to her professionalism. She’s still out there, as recently as a few weeks ago, in clothes that you couldn’t wear to work on casual friday, “reporting” the big stories.

i find it a bit funny that a person like Brennan, who put Augusta in the spotlight for not having a lot of female members, and as someone who writes about women’s sports issues, would actually suggest EA should tame her appearance in the future so that she doesn’t “ask for it”, as bbryan pointed out.

a number of thoughts:
1) it’s a visual medium, this tv thing. as howard stern so eloquently said once, “people like to look at pretty girls, what can i say?”
2) this is nothing new in tv. nothing. if those women you cited are so angry, they can give up their mid- to low-six-figure salaries for, say, teaching at mid-five-figure salaries.
3) life’s a bitch; life isn’t fair. suck it up girls.
4) if the women you cited didn’t know this day would come — erin andrews has even confessed she too will soon be too old for tv — then i caution that those women are beyond naive and far dumber than their diplomas would suggest.

EA’s yellow sun dress at the Cubs game nearly sent Rick Sutcliffe to rehab with David Duchovny. She definitely plays up to the male audience.

As pointed out in several posts, 1. Nothing excuses the secret videotaping of EA in her room, and 2. How exactly does EA play to the frat crowds? As a female who works in sports, EA is one of the sideline reporters that I do enjoy hearing from and don’t feel like she is an annoying sidebar to the event. She is knowledgeable, asks smart questions, and doesn’t make herself look like a fool.
Christine Brennan, in my opinion, is an embarrassment to female journalists and stands on her soap box for all the wrong reasons. There is nothing remarkable about her writings and her opinions are ignorant. I have never understood how Christine Brennan became an award-winning journalist.

Such questions overlook both the obvious and desireable. I would think usually it’s hot chicks! I see no problem with what Andrews does in privacy at all. In a corporate setting, no matter what you say as a dude around ninnies, you are a chauvinist and guilty until proven innocent. You probably are shown the door before any “trial” for that matter. It’s a massive American double-standard, but it won’t last for long the way things are going.

What is telling however is in the UK apparently there are a few attractive chicks who know more comparatively of their sports than do their US peers; TBL Godfather has a thing for British chicks, and he’s mentioned it here before, and I keep asking him to put more of them on here.
If EA is the best the US can do, sorry with five times more folks not counting all the illegals we have far, far to go here. I bet if the likes of ESPN had an honest audition without some ninnie bitch having some say, they could find at least 10 replacements for Andrews.
