Are You Ready a Three-Day, Primetime NFL Draft?
Baseball, College Football, Mike Vick, NFL, Video July 23rd. 2009, 6:16pm
Put it on the calendar: April 22-24 2010 (that’s Thursday through Saturday), the NFL draft will spans two nights and three days. The first round will be Thursday in primetime – will it conflict with the Office? – and ditto rounds two and three Friday. Saturday will be an all-day affair.
If you couldn’t already tell: Football’s back.
From Mike Vick – he met with Goodell Wednesday, apparently – to Ben Roethlisberger to a busy SEC media day (Tebow! Saban! Meyer!), football’s nearly upon us. We hope to begin our NFL previews next week.
Oh, and there was the small matter of a perfect game – the first in MLB since 2004 – by Chicago’s Mark Buehrle. DeWayne Wise preserved it with what has to be one of the best catches in save a perfect game in MLB history.
It’s official — 2010 draft moves to prime time (Pro Football Talk)

This has the feel of a PM Roundup.
July 23rd, 2009 at 6:34 pm
so pissed i sat washburn. was worried about him on the road against Division-leading Detroit … and he gave up 0 runs and 2 hits in 7. four straight great showings by him.
July 23rd, 2009 at 6:42 pm
They need to trade him now. His value will never be higher.
July 23rd, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Stupid NFL.
July 23rd, 2009 at 6:52 pm
I kind of liked the original early Saturday start.
July 23rd, 2009 at 6:53 pm
It’s so great. So, so great.
July 23rd, 2009 at 6:54 pm
That catch was amazing.
July 23rd, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Good I like this, saw that they were talking about this idea back after the draft via the NFL pr guy’s twitter
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:06 pm
good god, i think i just gave myself hypertension. i burried my fajitas in fajita seasoning and it was wayyyyyyyyyyy too salty. dont try this at home!
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:08 pm
That catch is pretty nasty…cant say I’m a fan of the first round being on a Thursday night. Should have made it Friday night rounds 1 and 2 and the rest saturday
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Don’t get too excited about Washburn, lately the Tigers can make a piece of shit look like Cy Young.
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:11 pm
I think the first round should be one pick every day for the entire month of April. Flood the Zone!
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
They need to trade him now. His value will never be higher.
Agreed, especially considering that in the preseason he was considered almost unmovable because of his contract (and certainly unmovable as anything more than a straight salary dump). That said, Jason Grey said he’s doing something differently that he believes is repeatable, so this might be more than a hot streak.
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Buster Olney reporting Cards 50-50 on a Wallace for Holliday swap. Have the razor blades poised over the wrists if this occurs.
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:33 pm
For what is usually one of the slowest weeks in sports, this has been a hell of a week.
July 23rd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Thank you NFL, I can enjoy a weekend in April now.
July 23rd, 2009 at 8:21 pm
The rumors around him will go into August. He’ll clear waivers no problem.
July 23rd, 2009 at 8:56 pm
It’s been awhile since I’ve been to the movies, but has anyone seen a preview for the movie District 9? It’s coming out in August and it looks fucking awesome!
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:09 pm
Hey, along with the site running ridiculously slow this week my anti-virus program has been randomly getting tripped once or twice a day. Anybody else having this happen?
And yes, very excited about District 9.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:10 pm
ugh. another hoops loss. not going to win when you give up 63 points. defense was the issue. tired. somewhat bitter.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Same here. Two or three times today.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:21 pm
That movie doesn’t look too bad. More stoked for The Last Airbender though.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:23 pm
a 32 year old who had been on the job 21 days as mayor of hoboken got arrested on corruption charges. new jersey – awesome.
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/07/massive_nj_corruption_sting_ta.html
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Never heard anything about that movie either. What’s it about?
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:29 pm
I guess I’m retarded and it’s not out until 2010, but it’s based on a cartoon series. Id definitely recommend watching it though.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Airbender
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Fetch, what the fuck? That movie doesn’t come out until 2010 and it’s about some stupid asian thing! District 9 comes out in like three weeks.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:31 pm
When did your rec league join the Big 10?
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Ohhh, swing and a miss!
I saw a trailer for District 9 the other day and it looks kind of interesting. Is Peter Jackson even directing movies anymore?
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:37 pm
stupid asian? That’s racist. And two words that have probably never been said back to back.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Last Airbender had a trailer on Potter, as did GI Joe. Both received rather mocking responses from the crowd, and rightfully so.
Shyamalan could make a movie out of the Book of Judges and it would be boring as shit, that guy is insufferable.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Great timing by the WSJ.
Came out with this story this morning.
Then, over the past 10 days our new drug czar was busy…$1.2 billion busy.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:45 pm
triston – it’s only 2 20 min halves, running clock. i think if you hold a team to under 50, you should win.
looks like everyone is reporting 4 games for vick. seems excessive, and seems unlikely anyone is going to jump at the guy.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Interesting read there MU. The whole federal raids on states where medicinal pot always seemed to me to be one of the grossest misuses of the Commerce Clause. I’m glad Obama is fulfilling that promise.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:49 pm
I’ll say it again, if my team needed a QB (and at least half the teams in the league do) I would definitely want Vick. He did his time. If he gets signed somewhere and people protest, they’re assholes.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:49 pm
*where medicinal pot is legal
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Again, just like the Big 10.
Just giving you shit.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:52 pm
mole, owners aren’t worried about a vick investment from a playing standpoint. They’re worried about fan backlash.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:53 pm
This is the movie I’m excited for. Has the feeling of a 1990s action flick.
How can you miss at least being entertaining with that cast? Obviously not going to be thought provoking, but entertaining. And yes, 2010 release date.
Finally, the Yankee game is underway.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:53 pm
I prefer not to root for sociopaths, but then the Rams have lost so much that maybe I’ve forgotten what winning was like. I wouldn’t protest because that’s sad, but I certainly don’t want him anymore than I want Little on the team now.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Yeah Expendables is going to be the shit, just like Rambo 4. God I loved that movie.
July 23rd, 2009 at 9:55 pm
How can you miss at least being entertaining with that cast? Obviously not going to be thought provoking, but entertaining. And yes, 2010 release date.
So Austin’s gonna be able to pay his tax debt? Seriously, that cast is amazing.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:01 pm
It will be interesting to see if Vick is even close to being the same player as he was before. Durability has to be an issue, but it’s a cheap gamble for a team that doesn’t have any other immediate options at QB.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:11 pm
The Expendables doesn’t look anywhere close to being as cool as District 9. Sylvester Stallone is like 300 yrs old. I’m totally over him as an action hero. Although I did hear Tom Arnold say he and Schwarzeneger are doing a True Lies sequel. I would definitely go see that.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm
The Expendables sounds like a Stephen King novel to me.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 pm
65 year old the star of an action movie? must be a comedy.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:22 pm
anyone read the police report from the Harvard professor arrest?
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2009/0723092gates1.html
strange.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:30 pm
huh. If I understood Whitlock properly today the black community is gonna be pissed.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:32 pm
I read it TBL. My two cents are that Gates yelled at the co because he’s this foremost racial profiling guy and assumed the cop just happened to stop by. Yelling at a cop “Because I’m black” isn’t the proper way to go about anything.
The more I hear about this story, the more I side with the cops. Granted it was the man’s house but he’s being hostile and yelling at police for no reason? The cops didn’t barge in they got called. Then he tries to go over their head and call the police chief? He escalated the whole situation needlessly. Maybe he shouldn’t have been hauled off to jail, but maybe he should relax. Calling a cop racist because he was following up a civilian tip? What a dick.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Would be a lot funnier if the cop were black.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Hey, along with the site running ridiculously slow this week my anti-virus program has been randomly getting tripped once or twice a day. Anybody else having this happen?
Same here.
I saw a trailer for District 9 the other day and it looks kind of interesting. Is Peter Jackson even directing movies anymore?
I believe he is making The Hobbit now, but that is something I heard months ago and could have fallen through.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:37 pm
i thought the same rs. as a prefessor of african american history, he is wading through all of the racist shit that has happened in this country every day. he is going to view everything as an extension of that, not as an unconnected event.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Nope. He’s involved in the writing and production but Guillermo Del Toro is directing.
I knew Jackson for his horror movies back in the day, and when he got announced at the LotR director I was shocked. Still I think anyone could have done a good job with those movies, and considering how bad King Kong was, I’m kind of glad Del Toro is doing The Hobbitt. He’s this generation’s Henson.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:43 pm
I agree with one thing, I’ll never understand/support anyone who yells at a cop in almost any situation. No good is EVER going to come of that and along with not helping your situation you just look classless.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:44 pm
This is true, but wasn’t one of the neighbors the one that called? They don’t know what the people who live around them look like?
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:46 pm
By the way here is Gate’s version of events. I find it laughable how accounts vary so heavily. By the way Gates loses a lot of points with me after finding out the Officer teaches a race profiling course to new police academy students.
Not to mention there’s a picture of Gates with his mouth open in handcuffs and with a black cop in the foreground. I’m sure he got arrested for “no reason”.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:48 pm
i read that there had been a series of break-ins in the neighborhood. it even stated in the police report that his door wouldn’t close correctly because of a break-in.
i know obama is friend’s with gates, and was basically standing behind his friend when asked, but that was a fuck-up on his part
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:48 pm
I wish it had been Cornel West. The interviews on that would have been excellent.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Yeah I don’t get that. Maybe she was just walking by? I don’t know. I know I don’t know all my neighbors, but how about getting on the lady that assumed that an old black man with a cane was breaking into a house at noon. Maybe thats who Gates should be attacking for being racist.
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:56 pm
TEIXEIRA ON A BITCH!
That was a SHOT!
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:59 pm
Pineapple Express is on soon. Is it worth me staying awake and getting 6 hours of sleep?
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:00 pm
if the yankees blow a 6-game skid to a guy named Vin Mazzarro …
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Only if you can follow along… if you pick up what I’m puttin’ down.
/you need to get really high
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Will drinking suffice?
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Show me 6 hours of sleep!
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:03 pm
definitely not. I’m not even sure if it’s worth if if you do get high.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:04 pm
Pineapple Express is hilarious. I didn’t realize it was going to turn into an action movie in the last act, but man it was pulled off perfectly. McBride steals the show towards the end.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:06 pm
I’ll show you 6, and raise you 2.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:07 pm
Pineapple Express was as disappointingly eh as Zach and Miri was surprisingly good, but then maybe I had just gotten really low on Kevin Smith.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:08 pm
My GOD Garret Jones is irrepressible!
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:10 pm
he’s the exact opposite of laroche, mole.
and doumit just went yard.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:12 pm
Hey TBL, just to give you an idea of how wrong you’ve been thus far on the Pirates trades of McLouth and Morgan.
Morgan’s replacement, Garrett Jones: .343 with 9 homeruns and 13 RBI through 18 games.
McLouth’s replacement, McCutchen: .294 with 3 homeruns 24 RBI (from leadoff) and 9 swiped bags, in 43 games. And he’s only 22.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:13 pm
I’m following on gamecast as I don’t have a tv, my roommate has informed me that he crushed it.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:14 pm
It went a LOOOONNGGG way Mole.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:16 pm
I wonder if Hernia stuck out the rain delay…. and do they serve beer during a delay, do they push up the cut off point?
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:16 pm
i’m watching on gamecast as well. wondering how deep the mccutchen and jones doubles were. they showed them as to the fence.
the numbers don’t matter to TBL, he has his mind made up that they were bad trades because he had heard of mclouth
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:17 pm
Doumit has some serious pop. Not much of a catcher … I hear he botched a pitchout earlier. The nickname of ‘no mitt’ really fits.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:18 pm
And not to jinx Morton, but let’s just say he has been a HUGE upgrade over Snell.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:18 pm
Im happy for Garrett Jones as a former Twin, even if he’s going right back to mediocrity next year.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:19 pm
yeah, he can’t field the position, and doesn’t stay healthy, but there’s no where else to put him. even though he wasn’t terrible terrible in right, he’s blocked by future HOFer garrett jones
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:19 pm
Speaking of McCutchen, did the 8 year old get banned?
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:19 pm
Oh no doubt. But Morgan wasn’t exactly swinging for the fences and they got value for him off of his first six weeks of the season.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:20 pm
Is Pearce gonna hit? I’ve picked him up in acouple deep NL only leagues.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:21 pm
I always wanted the Twins to give him a chance, but he sucked when he was up with them. Oh well.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:21 pm
Morgan has been really good for the Nationals, if really good is defined as stealing an insane amount of bases.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:22 pm
Plus they desperately needed an at least somewhat real center fielder.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:22 pm
he’s always hit in the minors, but not in the majors. never really given a chance before now (which they say they’re going to give him). he, moss and jones are playing for 2 spots next year.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:22 pm
I think so. Once he gets settled in he could be a solid .270 hitter with good power.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:24 pm
This season that is.
I miss Craig Monroe. Whenever he went yard I would scream ‘COME ON CRAIG!’ and that never got old to me.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:24 pm
that’s why the deal made sense for the Pirates, taguchi. they didn’t need morgan in center, and his bat negates any defensive advantage you get from him in left.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:25 pm
I thought that trade made sense for everyone involved.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:26 pm
I thought that trade made sense for everyone involved.
agreed
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:27 pm
aaannnnnddd the d-bags tie it. fuck shit bitch
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:27 pm
wow, since the trade morgan’s hit .329 with a .368 onbase and stolen 11 bases.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:28 pm
As bad as the Pirates have been, they really have been unlucky with two of their top prospects going down with TJ surgery. I think they should hold on to Duke, and Dorf Goes Fishing is a solid if not spectacular option in the four slot. They just need a real fifth starter and some pen help, to get to the level of ‘acceptable MLB pitching staff’.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:29 pm
Some more TEX!!!!
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:30 pm
Morgan is a good contact hitter and is fast as shit. But he has absolutely zero power, and you cannot have that in right field when you have a speed and contact guy in centerfield. They had several guys raking the ball in Indy (Jones got the call) and they wanted power. Plus they got two guys with big upside for a guy who probably won’t replicate this season’s performance (hey just like McLouth with last year!).
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:30 pm
Since there are two Pirates fans on here, I’d just like to make fun of them for drafting Tony Sanchez 4th overall this year.
And cause Pedro Alvarez apparently doesn’t give a shit about being a pro baseball player.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Hey fetch could you make scott baker remember how he pitches the first few innings later in the game, because this has gotten tiresome.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:32 pm
i’m encouraged Mole. Lincoln has thrown well this year, so has Gorzo. if they can get anything for Wilson (I think he’ll clear waivers, so he may not go this week), Sanchez and/or Snell, they might have something.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:33 pm
They didn’t want to pay the pitchers available the money they wanted, and seeing as they dropped down to the bottom of the first round and later, they weren’t alone. Plus they needed money to pay the latest 25 year old Latino teenager. Any movement on that yet?
What happened to Alvarez? Last I saw he was playing well for Altoona.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:36 pm
I have Haren pitching tonight. That makes me happy. I need the win and many, many Ks.
And the Yankees are on FI-YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Theo is wearing out the carpet in his office he’s pacing so much right now. There’s gonna be a blockbuster in the next two days I bet.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:36 pm
Since there are two Pirates fans on here, I’d just like to make fun of them for drafting Tony Sanchez 4th overall this year.

The more I thought about Sanchez, the less problem I had with it. even if you think there are better guys there, if they won’t sign for what you think they’re worth, why draft them? you still need to value them independent of what baseball america says. and sanchez figures to move quickly through the system. no idea what you mean with the alvarez thing.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:40 pm
I don’t know what he can do. Neyer’s right about both them and the Cubs. They have too many skilled players underperforming you can’t sit and can’t trade. They come back if those guys play better, not with some big trade.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:41 pm
Alvarez came into extended spring or whatever last August overweight, then came to spring training this year overweight as shit, and has knee problems because of it. I guess he’s been striking out a shit ton too.
Sanchez? Meh. They didn’t even save money on him, even though if they wouldn’t have taken him he wasn’t going to the Mariners at 27 or whatever their 2nd pick was. If you’re gonna take him 4 overall, at least save enough money on him to make it worth your while.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:42 pm
Oh good, I jinxed Morton.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:44 pm
He’s striking out over once a game, but he’s also only played like 25 games at AA level. He’s been hitting great lately and I’m fairly certain he played in the Futures game. I’m not worried about him panning out even remotely, I’m more worried about Tabata.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:45 pm
kind of amazing that the pirates have these fans who seem to blindly agree with whatever the franchise does. are you just excited about any sign of improvement? it reminds me of the shapiro shills.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:46 pm
I guess he’s been striking out a shit ton too.
yeah, he has a lot of k’s, but i think they partially attribute it to being overly agressive because he’s frustrated about being pitched around. and he’s hitting ~.275 with 19 homers in his first year of professional ball. really not too bad.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:46 pm
The Futures Game isn’t really the “best of the best” thing that it claims to be. Every org. has to be represented, and no more than 2 players per org. Freaking Scott Sizemore was in the futures game, Angel Villalona had to go cause otherwise the World team wouldn’t have had a 1B and as a result Posey couldn’t go, etc.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:47 pm
You’d be hard pressed to find anyone who agreed with the moves Littlefield made towards the end of his reign of incompetence. The new regime has actually made some pretty smart moves. I don’t agree with moving Sanchez at all though, I said that before.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:47 pm
Oh yeah, and there’s probably a 5% chance Alvarez plays 3B in the majors.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:48 pm
kind of amazing that the pirates have these fans who seem to blindly agree with whatever the franchise does.
a lot of fans aren’t happy. i hated pretty much everything that bonifay and littlefield did, but this front office has a plan, they explained it, and they are executing it.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:49 pm
ok, new regime is there. that makes sense. hopefully ill be like you in a few months.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:49 pm
It’s not really that. The fact of the matter is, they are not winning anytime soon with the roster they have had the past few years. They needed to blow it up and trade for prospects because the ownership won’t pay for any free agents that are actually good. Certain people acting like they’re stupid for trading flashes in the pan like McLouth are just blind to the fact that this team has to be rebuilt. There was a good point made in the Post Gazette this week: the end of an era isn’t always a bad thing.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:49 pm
you’re right, fetch, he’s moving to 1st, but he has the bat for it.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:50 pm
The one thing I totally disagree with is that sanchez pick. I think the worst thing a small market team can do is skimp on the draft. You should be spending ALL your money on the draft if your the Royals/Pirates/Marlins/etc. The value of hitting on an elite prospect there is far more than the mediocre free agents those teams end up spending that money on. And I know the Pirates story is they are spreading that money around, but when you pick four you should take (and pay) an elite prospect.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:50 pm
You realize this organization’s third basemen the past two years have been Joey Bautista and Andy LaRoche right?
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:51 pm
I hope so. I actually really hope the Pirates can get better. It’s such a great baseball town and a really great park. Plus as a Pens fan I’ve always been interested in the Pirates.
But I must admit I’m pretty worried about Pedro Alvarez, though it is way too soon to tell.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:53 pm
The only ‘elite’ prospects left in the draft at that point (it was a STEEP drop from the top three picks) were pitchers with serious injury concerns. And as their two highest drafted pitching prospects of the last five years both have had TJ surgery since getting drafted … yeah, they made the right move.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:55 pm
I think the worst thing a small market team can do is skimp on the draft. You should be spending ALL your money on the draft if your the Royals/Pirates/Marlins/etc.
but they aren’t skimping. the new management has gone over slot on guys committed to college in the later rounds to get them sign. they loaded up on tough sign, high school pitchers in the first 10 rounds this year with the commitment to pay them and get them signed if possible. did it last year too. they paid grossman $1 million last year out of the 6th.
it was all college arms rated around 5-10 in the draft, and i think the organization wants to move away from paying those guys big money, because they are often abused by their college coaches
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:58 pm
Matzek is elite, but he wants Rick Porcello money. Alex White is elite, but the Indians are dumb and turning him into a reliever.
Crow, Green, Borchering all would have been better picks. Well maybe not Crow seeing as the Royals have a shitty training staff.
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:59 pm
the only time college pitchers really get abused is in the postseason. Which is too bad cause it’s the only time the spotlight is on college baseball.

I actually would have preferred Green, if memory serves he was the SS right? They just were not going to go pitcher at that spot, I think that was the right call all the way. But they really needed a SS in the system because Raccoon Jack is gone and Bixler is fucking garbage.

Yeah Green was the shortstop. Says he wants 6 million, but he’ll probably only get 3 or so.

And after the horseshit they got put through with Alvarez last summer, I can’t blame them for not wanting to deal with someone who wanted a ton of money.
