2009 NFL Preview: Dallas Cowboys
2009 NFL Previews July 29th. 2009, 1:45pm
What an awesome summer! Terrell Owens was released, the practice bubble collapsed, Martellus Bennett rapped again (Black Olympics!), and Tony Romo broke up with Jessica Simpson (allegedly at an IHOP, he might have banned her from his property, and some photographers are spreading a rumor that he hooked up with Blame it on Rio’s Michelle Johnson). Topping all that – doughy Wade Phillips opened training camp by getting serious – he banged his fist on the table and proclaimed, “It’s time to win.” If all of this doesn’t add up to an underwhelming 7-9, then wait until we get to the offseason losses!
Obligatory non-sequitur video: Come on, you can totally see Romo and Witten and their boys blaring this while on the prowl in Texas.
Coolest player: Miles Austin. Only because we covered him when he was a multi-sport athlete in high school. Real nice kid. 2nd place – Tony Romo. A writer who covers the Cowboys told us about a year ago that Romo was a reader of this blog. We will continue to try and get an interview with him. A former colleague had breakfast with him once and said he couldn’t be a nicer guy. From undrafted to QB of the most popular team in the league? Dating Sophia Bush and Jessica Simpson? What’s not to like? 3rd place – Marion Barber, who is the toughest RB to tackle in the NFL. There isn’t a better stiff arm in the league.
Schedule: It’s difficult. First two home games are against playoff teams (Giants, Panthers), but the first three road games are against teams with new QBs and new coaches (Tampa, Denver, KC). We’re not kidding when we say Dallas might not win a road game after the bye (Eagles, Packers, Giants, Saints, Redskins). In December and January, the only two teams that visit Dallas are Super Bowl contenders – Chargers, Eagles). By our count, that’s 17 losses.
Vegas: The Cowboys over/under for wins is nine in some places; here, it’s 9.5.
Odd Roster Observation, I: The Cowboys have four players on the roster from Florida State: S Jerome Carter, OL Montrae Holland, WR Willie Reid, S Pat Watkins.
Felix Jones is Underrated: Record last year with rookie sensation Felix Jones from Arkansas in the lineup: 4-1. The loss was an overtime defeat at Arizona … when Jones left injured in the 1st half.
The Cowboys as Fast Times at Ridgemont High Characters: Martellus Bennett as Spicoli. Wade Phillips as Mr. Vargas. Jerry Jones as Mr. Hand. DeMarcus Ware as Charles Jefferson. Tony Romo as Mark Ratner. Jason Witten as Mike Damone. Patrick Crayton as Judge Reinhold.
Offseason Losses Outweigh Offseason Gains: Dallas lost DE Chris Canty to the Giants, LB Greg Ellis to the Raiders, DT Tank Johnson to the Bengals, LB Zack Thomas to the Chiefs, WR Terrell Owens to the Bills, and S Roy Williams to the Bengals. Gains? LB Keith Brooking from Atlanta and DE Igor Olshanksy from San Diego. The only way that offseason grade is a C is if you think getting rid of Owens is an upgrade.
Draft: Had 12 picks. None in the first two rounds. And none are expected to crack the starting lineup.
Odd Roster Observation, II: With Roy Williams now the team’s No. 1 receiver, and with Jon Kitna as Romo’s backup … yup, those two hooked up in Detroit on that 2007 Lions team that opened 6-2 and then lost seven of eight to end the season.
Prognosis Negative: Everyone hearts the Giants and Eagles in this division. The Redskins picked up Albert Haynesworth. For the first time in two seasons, we’re not picking the Cowboys to reach the Super Bowl. While they play a tough schedule, here’s the optimist in us: There’s no way the secondary is that bad again, the backfield of Barber and Jones has the potential to be one of the best in the league, and with Romo freed from the incessant demands of Terrell Owens, he’ll be relaxed and confident in the pocket. Though it’s more of a hunch than anything, we think the Eagles or Giants are a surprise letdown, and the Cowboys win 10-11 games and get into the playoffs.

Regarding Cowboys losses: Ellis was pretty good but kind of a wildcard, Canty was average, Tank was expendable, Thomas is done, TO is TO and Roy Williams is addition by subtraction. TO is a big loss, and Ellis kind of is. Brooking is a big upgrade over Thomas at LB. That’s not THAT bad.
But yeah, their WR situation is almost as bad as the Bears.

July 29th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
the grand hyatt san antonio dallas cowboys ad on top of this article makes me hate the fucking cowgirls even more
July 29th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

I don’t see them making the playoffs with that schedule. The division schedule alone will prevent them from getting to the postseason.

Garfield and Lodi kids were def the coolest kids to hang out with back in high school
July 29th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Fuck the O/U on wins… What’s the O/U on games before Wade Phillips is cooked and Garret takes over? My guess, 7.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
A healthy Jones and Barber are a great RB tandem. If Roy Williams plays up to his potential the offense will be strong. But I think the Cowboys implode this year, finish in 4th place in the East and Phillips is fired before the season ends. However, DeMarcus Ware will solidify himself as the best defensive player in the NFL this year.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
a buddy of mine is a shit head cowboys fan and i have been saying this for months just to fuck with him. ill smile everyday for the rest of the year if this happens
July 29th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
With those 3, they better be the best running team in the league if Garrett wants to keep his job and win games. That is a running team, letting Romo throw a lot makes no sense… it’s not like they have the Steeler D or anything to back it up.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Win a playoff game first.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
Tony Romo broke up with Jessica Simpson (allegedly at an IHOP, he might have banned her from his property,
my favorite story is Romo’s keeping his birthday present

So is this 3 NFC east winners?
it’s kinda tbl’s personal homage to the epic Hakeem Nick’s draft extravaganza
July 29th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
I’ve already said my piece about how playing for the right team and fucking celebrities does not make you an elite quarterback, but thanks for your consideration.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Wade Phillips will be fired mid season. book it
July 29th, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Ha, hadn’t seen that one. I’d keep a $110k boat, too. He’ll just wait until the playoffs to turn it back over.
I’m sure he used it a lot in the off-season… probably drives it a lot better than the Cowboys offense.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
/fixed
//the Saints have been to an NFC Championship and the Cardinals have been to a Super Bowl since the the last time the Cowboys have won a playoff game
///and the Houston Oilers still existed
July 29th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
he will be fired, but Jerry won’t do it midseason.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
o/t – Yes, aware of phillies trade. will save it for later in the day.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
All it takes is one fluketastic run – like Eli a couple of years ago.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Wade Phillips looks really pregnant this year.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
Wade Phillips will be fired mid season. book it
he will be fired, but Jerry won’t do it midseason.
I think after the season also, and Garrett will not be the replacement either, unless the Cowgurlz offense look like the Bills K-Gun circa 1992. Anything like last year, and he’s out also
July 29th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
TBL – not a math blog.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
It’s amazing how fast his star fell. Heh. I made a pun.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
he was built up by Dallas and their media after Peyton left. they knew that was a big hit.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
(Martellus Bennett has just had a pizza delivered to practice)
Jerry Jones – “Am I hallucinating here? Just what in the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Bennett – “Learning about Cuba, and having some food.”
July 29th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
They will promptly go 3-6 to finish the season if that happens.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
O/T
@TSH – Your prediction of Cubs losing 3 of 4 is hurtin’ right now. Hampton’s line so far: 0.2 IP, 6 ER, 7 H, 1 HRA.

I love hearing stories about big athletic stupid people. Without the big, athletic part, he’s saying, “Welcome to Wendy’s, would you like to try our new Asian chicken bites?”. Instead, he’ll make $10 million in his lifetime.
/what a country
July 29th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
It’s one of those things that makes me glad to live hear, but makes me look up at God and get angry for not blessing me with natural athletic ability
July 29th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
hear=here… I’m ready to go home
July 29th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
jpq1999 – I’m with you 100%. However, I’m not saying Bennett is big and dumb. I’m just a big fan of Fast Times…

jersey: don’t forget: long snapping!!
July 29th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
re: long snapping: 2nd time today that quotelink thing didn’t work (#139)
@vitale: It’s OK. I’ll say it. He’s big and dumb (and the FTARH reference went right over my head, unfortunately-lol)
July 29th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
I got it, I got it. But dammit, I want my kid is going to be bigtime qb for a hs football team in Texas dammit.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
I think rich pop music stars that have no talent and are only famous because of the high-quality production pisses me off more than the rich athletes do.
July 29th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
I want my kid is going to be bigtime qb for a hs football team in Texas dammit.
Texas? wouldn’t you want him to get a good college education, and a chance to be an NFL QB???
July 29th, 2009 at 3:02 pm

agree w/ you, in fact yesterday LeBatard said the same thing w/ respect to movie actors compared to athletes (multiple takes, not as physical, no pressure of live audience, etc)
July 29th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
He will, after he wins 4 straight state championships at say, I dunno, Southlake Carroll, he’s going to ND.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
And hey none of those teams ever won a superbowl!
/neither have the eagles
July 29th, 2009 at 3:05 pm

if he’s a little more technically-oriented, send him here

Well professional sports is the only job where you can fail at your job half the time and still make millions. Shit in baseball, if you do your job 1/3 of the time your a fuckin hero.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
So the answer is that you don’t want him to be an NFL QB?
July 29th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
UT is a better school than Purdue. According to US News, anyway.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
What if you sell millions of albums based on 2 good tracks on a 15 track album??
That’s a .133 batting average.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
/truth’d
July 29th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
UT is a better school than Purdue. According to US News, anyway.
UT’s a great school, no doubt. I was just kidding jersey about combining it w/ the NFL QB thing (plus, also throwing Graham Harrell in there-Texas schools)
July 29th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
What if you sell millions of albums based on 2 good tracks on a 15 track album??
How is that true? Just because those 2 tracks are singles doesn’t mean that’s the only reason the album sold millions. you bought the album because you liked those 2 songs and want to hear the rest of it. that’s a homerun. Plus, who says those are the only 2 good songs? that’s an opinion
July 29th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Felix Jones will make more of an impact on special teams. They’re already talking about him returning kicks and punts. It’s tough to put him in on 3rd down since he can’t block worth a fuck. Choice will be in on those plays, and if Jones is on the field, he’ll be flexed out in the slot. I agree with MATTRYAN though. Run the damn football. They’d be much better if they did.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
And the saints, and bears, and panthers, and cardinals. The NFC sucks, it doesn’t take much to put together a run through the playoffs.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
truth.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Keep on disrespecting the Giants, all of you. Please!
July 29th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
As for the Cowboys I think they’ve got the best chance of anyone of winning that division. For all this talk about the Eagles moves, their receivers still suck, Maclin isn’t changing that, and Westbrook will still be injured. Eli without Plax is a below average QB, and Coughlin will return to being a hated ass of a coach. The Skins offense will still be painful to watch.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
I just want my kid to not top out at being a decent high school safety… and do it somewhere where people care about football. Nothing else in the next 30 years matters to me more than that.
/Still only 23 and single by the way
July 29th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
The NFC may suck but the NFC East is still the toughest division
July 29th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Being for serious, I think both East divisions are going to be pretty tough this year, but NFC East is def the hardest.
July 29th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Of course it’s an opinion. But let me offer two words to solidify my argument that worthless pop stars are the least deserving of big money: Ashley Simpson
July 29th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Gotta love the Tech guys pissing themselves because one of thier boys have a decent 4 games in the NFL. I get that Choice was good in a fill-in roll but with a healthy Barber and Jones he will touch the ball twice a game on 3rd and 18’s.
July 29th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
The analysts like him too. And Felix Jones might as well be wet tissue paper when it comes to pass protection.
