2009 NFL Preview: New York Giants
2009 NFL Previews July 27th. 2009, 3:00pm
Last year they were the World Champion New York Football Giants. New Jersey’s favorite sons were coming off one of the biggest upsets in football history and started the season 11-1. They looked like a team hungry to repeat. Then Plaxico Burress wore sweatpants in public.
You may have heard about this. Those sweatpants created a butterfly effect that saw the Giants drop 3 of their last 4 regular season games and then get bounced from the Playoffs in the divisional round by the rival Eagles. And then this happened. (Language NSFW)
Yeah, it was pretty awesome.
SUNY Albany – This might be the Giants’ last training camp in upstate New York. While it is nice that they’re in town late in the summer (I saw some players at The Cheesecake Factory. AWESOME!!) they take over SUNY where I regularly play basketball. Damn Giants.
Plaxico Burress – Again, you may have heard about this. There are rumors starting that the Giants want to resign Plax. (Huh?) The DA wants to send Plaxico to jail. For a long time. He’s not officially a Giant anymore, but we’ll still hear plenty about him in the NY media. Stay tuned!
Offense – Plax and all-time leading receiver Amani Toomer were cut this off-season. (For slightly different reasons.) Obviously, priority number one this season would be finding new quality receivers to help make Eli Manning appear proficient. Enter Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden. Those two, along with Dominik Hixon, will be in charge of catching Eli’s ducks this season. Unless Eli actually gets his accuracy badge this summer.
The running game will be two-thirds the same as Derrick Ward left via free agency for the greener pastures in Tampa Bay. I’m not sure if he was “Wind” or “Fire,” so the Giants will need a new running back combo nickname. Leading rusher Brandon Jacobs resigned with a 4-year deal and Ahmad Bradshaw also returns. The offensive line returns intact and they should again be near the top of the league in rushing.
Jacobs on Romo -
“I think if you were to keep Tony Romo in the pocket, he’s not that effective. That’s what I think,” Jacobs said. “But if you let him run around and everybody thinking ‘Is he gonna run? Is he gonna pass?’ then I think he’s effective. Because he is athletic and he can run and he can beat you there. But if you keep him in the pocket, I don’t think he can beat you from the pocket. I don’t think he’s that great of a passer, to be honest with you.”
Face!
Defense – Last season they were the 5th-ranked scoring defense at 18.3 points a game. This season they hope to be better. (Who doesn’t?) Osi Umenyiora returns after missing the entire 2008 season due to injury. They also signed former-Cowboy, Chris Canty to help the 6th-ranked pass rush. Justin Tuck and the rest of the gang also return. The defense alone should keep the Giants in most games.
Big Fan – In Patton Oswalt’s new movie he plays a Giants fan who gets beat up by his favorite player. It looks awesome. It’s inspired me to get beat up at The Cheesecake Factory this summer.
Outlook – Barring injury and self-inflicted gun-shot wound, the Giants should win their second-straight NFC East title. They’re the best team in the division. How far they go in the Playoffs depends the passing game. The young receivers will need to mature quickly and Eli will have to take care of the football. Two years ago, he protected the heck out of the football. Last post-season, he threw two interceptions. Bad Eli!
The Giants should get it done with the classic football formula: Good Defense + Good Offensive Line + Strong Running Game = Success.

Oswalt is, by all accounts, fantastic in the movie. Even exceeds his work in the best Pixar movie ever made.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
hakeem nicks?
July 27th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
Still, a futile effort, as he will never top his most important work on King of Queens.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
fuck em’
July 27th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
offensively too one dimensional to win the division. maybe wild card, but I like Philly and even Dallas over NYG this year.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
i thought it was the new jersey fagball flukefrauds…seeing as they play in new jersey and whatnot.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
If Westbrook decides to stay healthy all year for once, Philly’s coming outta the NFC as your super bowl favorite. Too many weapons.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Those Girl Scouts can be such little bitches sometimes.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
No more nice Tom Coughlin. He’ll be an asshole, again.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Even exceeds his work in the best Pixar movie ever made.
That movie grossed me out to no end. I’ll take every other Pixar movie before that one. I couldn’t get past the premise.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Eli should go to shit right after they break the bank on his next contract.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
no NFC team is a super bowl favorite. NE, pit, indy, baltimore and SD would all be favored over any NFC team.
im assuming you mean they’re NFC favorites.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
If Westbrook decides to stay healthy all year for once, Philly’s coming outta the NFC as your super bowl favorite. Too many weapons.
Every year with this Iggle bullshit. Has there ever been a worse big-game QB in NFL history than McNabb?
July 27th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
im assuming you mean they’re NFC favorites.
Correct, my bad
July 27th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
romo of recent vintage. maybe jim kelly? boomer esiason?
July 27th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
Every year with this Iggle bullshit. Has there ever been a worse big-game QB in NFL history than McNabb?
Tony Romo will prove that status belongs to him once again this year.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
romo of recent vintage. maybe jim kelly? boomer esiason?
I would argue all finish close behind. At least Kelly was against the same dominant team. McNabb’s lost 4 NFC title games and a SB in 8yrs, all to different teams and more often than not, as a favorite.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
The NFC East is going to be about which offense can actually score. Washington and the Giants made major upgrades to already good defenses. The Eagles will be good as always and Dallas is, well, who the hell knows. I think the Giants offensive line gives them a slight advantage but its razor thin.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
But talking toys didn’t bother you?
July 27th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
ill…yea, i’d have to agree. those were the only ones in my lifetime that i could really remember as being truly shitty in big games.
peyton was up there for a second, but he’s had a bunch of great big games, just some memorable flops.
could we put jake delhomme in there?
July 27th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Romo hate is overrated. He won’t be that great in any big game this year because they are going to ride their running backs.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
needs more cheesecake factory mentions.
/eli is still a fag.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
I think the Giants offensive line gives them a slight advantage but its razor thin.
With the addition of Peters, i think Philly has a small edge on the line now. They’re younger as well.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Keep on disrespecting the Giants, all of you. Please!
July 27th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
and stacy andrews.
eagles have the best OL in football.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Vick reinstated
July 27th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
could we put jake delhomme in there?
Sure, why not? Jake’s most recent performance was too painful to watch. Let’s make it a worst five, with McNabb on top. Though, Romo is really putting together a convincing resume lately.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Ryan > Big Benny > Tony Homo > Eli “franks and beans” Manning
July 27th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
will do.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
I fucking hope so.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Yes…
July 27th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
link?
July 27th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
i’m getting a boner with all the NFL talk, can’t get here fast enough
July 27th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Breaking News on the WWL. No link sorry.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
i can’t wait for those cool late september/early october sundays when i’ve got nothing else to do but watch football, drink sam octoberfest and eat wings.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Giants playing the disrespect card? ha please
July 27th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
I dont get this, does this mean he’s suspended for the first 5 games or what?
July 27th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
But talking toys didn’t bother you?
I didn’t say I couldn’t suspend my disbelief, I can’t get past the premise of disgusting, disgusting rats cooking food for human consumption.
My hope with Philly is that Jason Peters, now that he finally has his money, will play like a piece of shit. I doubt it though; that line looks great.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
i think it just means he’ still suspended indefinitely, but he’s witholding a decision for some odd reason.
either way, disappointed.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
At least Kelly was against the same dominant team
NYG, Wash, Dallas, and Dallas
July 27th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
I dont get this, does this mean he’s suspended for the first 5 games or what?
It means he’ll be back around the time Romo starts falling apart.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Just a weird way to state it, ‘you’re reinstated! but you can’t play till week 6.’
July 27th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
i agree, it’s sending a mixed signal. apparently Goodell is trying to make TO happy and make everyone else happy.
just grow some balls and make a decision and deal with the backlash.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
I just don’t get the 5 game suspension.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Vick reinstatement conditional
July 27th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Funny.
So who signs him??
July 27th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
So who signs him??
The Saints.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
minnesota
July 27th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
Never has someone gotten to as many Championship games with so little. If McNabb had half the talent around him that Kelly or event he overrated Marino had, he’d have around 3 rings by now. McNabb has also been the victim of the worst big game coach in memory.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Imagine a Vick-Bush WildCat. That could be sweet.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
this is wrong. mcnabb never played for marty schottenheimer and there HAS NEVER been a worse big game coach than marty schottenheimer.
tough shit…mcnabb is partially responsible for TO getting out of town and they had westbrook then and a still effective lj smith. the eagles fucked themselves by fucking over TO.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
+7 for the funniest comment of the day.
McNabb has had talent around him, and still failed. And when is the last time Andy Reid threw up in the huddle like a Bourbon Street rookie?
July 27th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Absolutely.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
So who signs him??
Jacksonville
July 27th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Imagine a Vick-Bush WildCat. That could be sweet.
Sean Payton is crazy enough to use him, and that owner WANTS to be run out of town on a rail, so he can move to San Antonio, anyway.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Where would Brees go?
I think Dallas may just do it.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
that was a fuck up by everybody involved. that team could have been great, and they knew it, but they still got rid of him. they are either retarded or smart, can’t tell since they haven’t won shit w/o him but didn’t win a title with him.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Philly managemnet really fucked up the TO situation in hindsight. They could have kept a leash on Terrell very easily. Could you imagine Philly these days if the Eagles had won a super bowl in the past 5 years.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
So who signs him??
Jacksonville
please allow me to translate. He said anyone but Buffalo, for the love of God.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
mcnabb is partially responsible for TO getting out of town
How?
July 27th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
It’d almost be as bad as Boston.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
i bet he goes to the 49ers.
July 27th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
Where would Brees go?
I think Dallas may just do it.
For the love of God, anywhere but Dallas!@
July 27th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
TO, the cancer? Played great, but can only last in one year in each place before wearing out the welcome wagon.
Count me in the McNabb corner here. They’ve won and won and won without a running game…. or at least a coach that occasionally calls a running play.
The Eagles defense let them down in several of those big games by not being able to get the other teams off the field.
And in those 4 championship games and 1 SB, how many times were the Eagles favored? (I really don’t know… I can’t imagine it was more than 1 or 2 though).
July 27th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
by acting like a petulant little bitch when TO simply said the truth about mcnabb puking in the huddle during the super bowl. instead of acting like a man and admitting you tightened up like a scared child.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
I prefer to live in a world where the Eagles still have not won a superbowl
July 27th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
McNabb had talent around him 1 year and made it to the Super Bowl.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Giants over Pats, again. That is all.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
not this shit again…
key word…PLAYED GREAT. he isn’t paid to get along with his teammates.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Who the fuck is going to sign him to “maybe” start playing in Week 6, if Goodell-Almighty happens to feel like it? Yeah, Dallas could use him to work construction in the mean time, but shit…
July 27th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
god help us all if the cubs and bears win within a few years of each other.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
by acting like a petulant little bitch when TO simply said the truth about mcnabb puking in the huddle during the super bowl. instead of acting like a man and admitting you tightened up like a scared child.
That’s not even close to all the story. He, TO, was playing chicken with the management of the Eagles because he was in the 2nd year, the absolute cheap year, of his contract. He was only technically the 13th highest paid wide receiver, or something. He forgot that the prior year, he’d made like 14 million.
When Dallas signed him (the first time), they laid out a 3 year deal that was a salary, then an offseason roster bonus, then a salary, then a roster bonus. He needs to see big $$ on the horizon, or he freaks out. He really freaked out when he couldn’t get open in Dallas, they panicked, and brought in R. Williams, who technically made more than him. It drives him crazy.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Didn’t they score a TD on that drive? TO was pissed because McNabb didn’t speak up on him when management reneged on a deal to extend his contract.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Just ’cause they sign him doesn’t mean it will be for big $. I think a few teams are already looking at numbers right now.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
OF COURSE HE DOES!!! he’s not an idiot…he kills himself the entire year, risks his CAREER to play in the SB and gets rewarded with what? a salary that doesn’t match his production? he needs to get his money while he can…
July 27th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
by acting like a petulant little bitch when TO simply said the truth about mcnabb puking in the huddle during the super bowl. instead of acting like a man and admitting you tightened up like a scared child.
If you’re McNabb and the face of the franchise in Philadelphia of all places, you cannot admit you were scared and choked or else you are etching your own fucking gravestone. So McNabb didn’t want to admit he froze up, ok i get that. T.O. destroyed that fuckin locker room and responded like a man by doing sit ups in his driveway when he was told to get the fuck out of town. T.O’s a punk bitch who has never made a locker room fan his whole career. His best friends are his publicists, i guess that shows ya how well liked that asshole is with his co-workers.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
training camp plus 6 weeks of the regular season to get in great shape is the best possible scenario vick could ask for. if he was allowed to play immediately he would be pressured to perform.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
funny…because there’s a lot of people who played with him that say otherwise.
philly’s front office is just a bunch of cheap assholes. they want all the talent in the world, they just don’t want to pay for it. fuck that front office, and fuck that team and city forever and ever.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Vick should go to the Cardinals
July 27th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
A little harsh, but I agree. Phuck the phillies while were at it.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
A little harsh, but I agree. Phuck the phillies while were at it.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
funny…because there’s a lot of people who played with him that say otherwise.
yeah, a lot of sycophants revere his ass. That happened in Dallas, too, even as he was destroying that offense. You can’t possibly defend TO’s repeated public bashing of Jason Witten.
It’s funny to have seen all those shitty interceptions that Romo threw on first down, at TO, after having watched TO berate Jason Garrett on the sidelines to get him the ball.
He can’t get open quickly against press coverage anymore, at least he couldn’t in Dallas.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
of course i can’t.
but again, as i’ve said during every single TO debate on here…these guys get paid to play sports, not to get along.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
he isn’t paid to get along with his teammates.
And technically you are, cuz if he doesn’t, he doesn’t get paid. He was ran outta Philly and Dallas because he can’t get along with his teammates. If T.O. had the brain the size of a peanut he would get along with his locker room peeps
July 27th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
technically you get paid for your onfield performance…teams don’t hire players to be popular in the locker room, but to play on the field.
and those teammates must really not appreciate the 80 catches, 1200 yards and 10+ TD’s he gets per year. damn…what an asshole.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
FAIL. They are supposed to get paid to WIN GAMES. Winning is more than talent. Being an asshole to anyone and everyone doesn’t help WIN GAMES.
TO is the epitome of the ME generation. Get me MY money. Throw ME the ball. How good did I look in the end zone?
July 27th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
again…wrong.
they get PAID to PLAY. if they got paid to win games, all the lions players would be playing for free.
doesn’t hurt either…right michael irvin? dennis rodman? etc, etc, etc?
July 27th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Yeah, the guy only stabbed a another person in the neck with some scissors and that team STILL won championships. TO is not as big of a problem as people think he is. He is only vociferous when he feels he is getting under utilized (which he did in Dallas) or when he is getting fucked over (Philly def fucked that up)
July 27th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
As big of a freak as Rodman was, he never bitched about his teammates and made life uncomfortable for them.
As much stuff as Irvin snorted, he never called Aikman gay or demanded the ball thrown to him 30 times a game.
For as much shit as Randy Moss has taken for being an ass, he has been a great player in New England, who can handle being a decoy as long as they win.
It doesn’t matter how much money you make. Money, alone, doesn’t make you happy. Getting beaten down by a teammate or having to deal with that kind of tension affects everyone around. That type of stuff wears on anyone regardless of whether you are working a $15 an hour desk job with a douchenozzle next to you or whether you make $5 mil a year dealing with a TO ripping your every move.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
T.O. has B.O.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
how the fuck did you schmucks turn a vick convo into a t.o. convo? spence you got baited you’re better than that. t.o. isnt paid to shake babies and kiss hands he is paid to catch footballs and score tds. if he was brought on my team i would be fucking happy and so would cutler.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
no, he just went to vegas and had a charter flight get him to the game while he was still drunk. WAYY better than TO.
never called him gay…JUST STABBED TEAMMATES and, yes, demanded the ball.
as long as they win, but the minute they don’t, who knows if he’ll just go back into sulk mode like he did in minny and oakland.
hey, you don’t like a coworker…get a new job. as long as that person is producing, that’s all that matters. you don’t HAVE to play in the NFL…you don’t HAVE to be a QB if you don’t want to handle that kind of pressure.
i work with a fuckton of assholes here, but guess what, if it came down to it, they’d stay because they produce.
bottom line = production, and few WR’s in HISTORY can match TO’s level.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
mrejr…TO’s my boy and mcnabb is a bitch. one of my many hot button topics.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
You must have forgotten about Rodman’s last years in Detroit or his time in San Antonio.
I don’t know about the gay part, but all great receivers demand the ball, even Jerry Rice. They feel like they’re open on every play.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Everyone needs to quit bringing up Irvin and Rodman as comparisons to TO. It was the 90’s. The WWL didn’t blow shit up the way it does now with over coverage.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
TO even said he learned all his behavior from jerry rice. when TO came into the league he was painfully shy.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
T.O. needs to cry on Roy Firestone again.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
“chris” everett needs to go on jim rome again.
July 27th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Man, that was great. Jim Everett should’ve been in Naked Gun. How did the Zucker brothers miss that?
July 27th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
TO’s my boy and mcnabb is a bitch.
one of the few times spencer and I agree on something. McNabb is a douche
July 27th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
too bad the Giants O-line can’t catch passes in the red zone.
