giants-fanLast year they were the World Champion New York Football Giants. New Jersey’s favorite sons were coming off one of the biggest upsets in football history and started the season 11-1. They looked like a team hungry to repeat. Then Plaxico Burress wore sweatpants in public.

You may have heard about this. Those sweatpants created a butterfly effect that saw the Giants drop 3 of their last 4 regular season games and then get bounced from the Playoffs in the divisional round by the rival Eagles. And then this happened. (Language NSFW)

Yeah, it was pretty awesome.

SUNY Albany – This might be the Giants’ last training camp in upstate New York. While it is nice that they’re in town late in the summer (I saw some players at The Cheesecake Factory. AWESOME!!) they take over SUNY where I regularly play basketball. Damn Giants.

Plaxico Burress – Again, you may have heard about this. There are rumors starting that the Giants want to resign Plax. (Huh?) The DA wants to send Plaxico to jail. For a long time. He’s not officially a Giant anymore, but we’ll still hear plenty about him in the NY media. Stay tuned!

eli_abby_manningOffense – Plax and all-time leading receiver Amani Toomer were cut this off-season. (For slightly different reasons.) Obviously, priority number one this season would be finding new quality receivers to help make Eli Manning appear proficient. Enter Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden. Those two, along with Dominik Hixon, will be in charge of catching Eli’s ducks this season. Unless Eli actually gets his accuracy badge this summer.

The running game will be two-thirds the same as Derrick Ward left via free agency for the greener pastures in Tampa Bay. I’m not sure if he was “Wind” or “Fire,” so the Giants will need a new running back combo nickname. Leading rusher Brandon Jacobs resigned with a 4-year deal and Ahmad Bradshaw also returns. The offensive line returns intact and they should again be near the top of the league in rushing.

Jacobs on Romo -

“I think if you were to keep Tony Romo in the pocket, he’s not that effective. That’s what I think,” Jacobs said. “But if you let him run around and everybody thinking ‘Is he gonna run? Is he gonna pass?’ then I think he’s effective. Because he is athletic and he can run and he can beat you there. But if you keep him in the pocket, I don’t think he can beat you from the pocket. I don’t think he’s that great of a passer, to be honest with you.”

Face!

Defense – Last season they were the 5th-ranked scoring defense at 18.3 points a game. This season they hope to be better. (Who doesn’t?) Osi Umenyiora returns after missing the entire 2008 season due to injury. They also signed former-Cowboy, Chris Canty to help the 6th-ranked pass rush. Justin Tuck and the rest of the gang also return. The defense alone should keep the Giants in most games.

Big Fan – In Patton Oswalt’s new movie he plays a Giants fan who gets beat up by his favorite player. It looks awesome. It’s inspired me to get beat up at The Cheesecake Factory this summer.

Outlook – Barring injury and self-inflicted gun-shot wound, the Giants should win their second-straight NFC East title. They’re the best team in the division. How far they go in the Playoffs depends the passing game. The young receivers will need to mature quickly and Eli will have to take care of the football. Two years ago, he protected the heck out of the football. Last post-season, he threw two interceptions. Bad Eli!

The Giants should get it done with the classic football formula: Good Defense + Good Offensive Line + Strong Running Game = Success.
