NFL Players and R&B Singers Take You Into the Night
Athletes and Celebrities, Music, NFL July 28th. 2009, 6:30pm

Vibe magazine departs with an NFL/R&B spread. And we’re close to the ESPN the Magazine “naked athletes” issue. Big fun!
From left to right above:
Will Demps and LeToya Luckett
Osi Umenyiora and Chrisette Michele
Dwight Freeney and Teairra Mari
Darren Sharper and Melanie Fiona
That’ll be all for today, folks. We’ll spend our evening trying to help the Yankees push the Rays 8.5 back in the AL East. One wonders if a loss tonight makes trading away Scott Kazmir, Carlos Pena and/or Carl Crawford more or less likely.
The Redskins aren’t tomorrow’s preview. That least one other NFC East team.
RIP, Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson.

Good stuff today TBL. Only one NBA Post! (not bitching about content)
Lots of football and baseball. And a SBTB ref.
July 28th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Red Sox close to getting Cliff Lee and a bunch of prospects.
July 28th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
you can write off the Rays of the Yanks win tonight and Boston gets cliff lee.
a rotation of Beckett, Lee, Lester and Wakefield/Dice K (if he’s back) is strong.
(still like Sabathia, Burnett, Pettite, Joba a bit more)
July 28th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Osi is da shit!!!
July 28th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
that’s very… homer of you TBL.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
@Souvenier City: check this out
That’s Rob Bradford, who updates the Twitter you posted.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
Beckett, Lester, Lee better than any three the yankees could throw out, all that matter’s in a playoff series. And the back end of Boston’s rotation stronger as well. Only real argument, maybe, could be, that Yankee’s 1-2 (Sabathia, Burnett) are better than Boston’s (Beckett, Lee) and I don’t even think that’s true. Conclusion: think you’re wrong there TBL.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
Problem is that Joba is pitching only 150 innings this year… Yanks brass swears he is not pitching anymore than that, no matter what.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Well, not true, he is going to the pen after that. Stupid, but thats the policy.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Well… that’s a buzz kill. That’s like when Rich Eisen told me he was horny.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
It’s good news for Phils fans. Yesterday, JP Ric tried to tell the Phils that he might send Halladay to the Sox. Which I knew was bullshit, but this just confirms it.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
I say it’s good news because even though the Twitter was supposedly “hacked”, it’s probably true and going to happen.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Rays talked to the Mets about taking Kazmir, his 7 million/year contract and broken arm. Shockingly the Mets turned it down. I wish they would have done it. Full circle and all that jazz.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
and as we all know rich eisen was most definitely horny.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Very sad about Jim Johnson.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
I’ve never heard of any of those chicks.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Eagles DC Jim Johnson passed today, they will win the super bowl now because of that, not because they are good or anything.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
During Jim Johnson’s last year with the Colts, they beat up on the Eagles with half of his defense missing. So the Eagles scooped him up the following year. /Andy Reid
July 28th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
I’ve never heard of any of those chicks.
thought the exact same thing, KC, except that Melanie Fiona (top right) looks like Amy Winehouse after a 5 day coke binge and 30 dood gangbang
July 28th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
Will Demps cannot fucking believe he’s Will Demps.
July 28th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Why didn’t you just say she looks like Amy Winehouse?
July 28th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
I feel like I should have, but I haven’t either.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
That photoshoot is a blatant excuse for one massive orgy.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
Hey did anyone see the video of Stephon Marbury crying? I’m in the press box so I can’t watch, but damn I think this dude’s gone off the deep end.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
Twins or Giants apparently close to acquiring Freddy Sanchez. Hopefully don’t have to give up too much.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
contract the Pirates!
July 28th, 2009 at 8:25 pm
Just plowed through Simmons’ two part Almost Famous column. I feel like I’m back in college and just got finished with finals. I might need a nap.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
he called “white light white heat” “white light hot heat” in a column that was supposed to be picking the best quotes. I’VE LOST ALL RESPECT FOR THE MAN.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
I saw that, NDub. I would make fun, but I’m no racist.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
care to summarize for us all in a few tidy sentences?
July 28th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
I’ve never heard of any of those chicks.

Ha! I almost tagged that…

//Me too’d
… but I figured you were getting tired of all the old guy crap people throw at you.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Just plowed through Simmons’ two part Almost Famous column. I feel like I’m back in college and just got finished with finals. I might need a nap.
care to summarize for us all in a few tidy sentences?
He took 50 quotes from the movie and applied it to the NBA. I guess that might be interesting to a NBA fan. It was long and well, maybe NBA and Almost Famous fans would appreciate it. I thought Almost Famous was ok, but to call it the best quote movie of the aughts, was way off. That title goes to Best In Show or the younger folks might say Anchorman.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
LaTroy Hawkins placed on 15-day DL.
Reason: Shingles.
Gross.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
Me neither, Gonzo. I didn’t watch so I’m not sure the context. But I do know this… why would some shirtless dude film himself bawling? It baffles me. Marbury is close, if not already, in the deep end.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2. The Royal Tanenbaums 3. Almost Famous 4. The Wrestler 5. Memento
July 28th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
It’s a 2 part simmons article…the summary alone would be 3,000 words.
And yes, I slogged through it just to see if he’s still got it. Definitely lost a few mph off his fastball, but not quite at the level where he needs to be Glavine’d.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
is Jeff Francoeur killin it or what? on fire since the trade.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Never seen Almost Famous or Best In Show, but the best quote movie for me is Dumb and Dumber. I think that puts up a pretty strong argument.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Well, Simmons has watched that movie far too many times, first of all. Also, he annoyingly uses quotes from the director’s cut, which you wouldn’t know if you haven’t seen it (like me). Other than that, he does a pretty solid job of shoehorning offseason NBA goings on into scenes/quotes from the movie. He likes the Celtics for the 2010 title (shocker), likes the direction that the Thunder are headed, and thinks it makes sense for LeBron to go to the Clips next summer. He’s talked himself into this. And it’s long. Very very long. Good read, but clear your schedule.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Best in Show>>>>Anchorman.
/fact
July 28th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
not a will ferrell movie, maybe old school but I would much rather quote apatow stuff.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
Road beef alert in Tampa
July 28th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
Marbury is close, if not already, in the deep end
This is a topic for another day, but I think all this new streaming/twitter/blogging done by athletes will prove what we already knew… a lot of athletes are lucky they get paid to play ball. Some of these guys are insane. While the most social media’d I get is Facebook, I approve of this. I’m thinking about signing up to Twitter just to get these guys’ posts. I bet a bunch of athletes really start screwing up and critizing refs/teammates/coaches.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
Dumb and Dumber was great. I think Wedding Crashers is quotable, but only because I say the “I can put it wherever I want to” line and the Daquiri timeout line all the time.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Simmons isn’t arguing what the best quote movie is (though Posnanski IS having a poll on his blog about that right now, Lebowski not winning as handily as it should) he’s arguing that Almost Famous is the best movie of this decade.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
You wanna talk some jive?
July 28th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
i dont think this is a movie quote list
July 28th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
Wedding Crashers rules all.
anchorman is great for quotes, though.
guess i gotta rent this best in show flick …
July 28th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Simmons hit on that in his opus as well. He’s dead on, though. Facebook is social networking, and twitter is a marketing engine. Couldn’t be more accurate.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
What a fucking homer. He’s also a Clippers season ticket holder, so of course it makes sense for LeBron to go there. And he’s been on Durant’s dick since Day 1 of college, so it makes sense why he’s in love with the direction of the Thunder. Good lord, Simmons, could you make it any more obvious?
July 28th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Never seen Almost Famous or Best In Show, but the best quote movie for me is Dumb and Dumber. I think that puts up a pretty strong argument.
Simmons was just talking about 00’s movies.
Best in Show>>>>Anchorman.
/fact
tall guy
You can add several more >>>>>> from me. Tall Guy, Best in Show is one of the funniest ass movies ever.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Can we expect a screengrab Hernia? Please?
Already happened.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
I think I could literally do the entire movie.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
lebowski,dumb and dumber, naked gun
July 28th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
I always thought Saving Silverman was a great movie in terms of grabbing quotes from it. Dazed and Confused, too.
“Hey man, you got a joint?”
“No man. Sorry, not on me.”
“It’d be a lot cooler if you did!”
I like that one even better than, “That’s what I love about these high school girls… I get older. They stay the same age.”
July 28th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Chris Paul’s tweet about the trade.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Oswalt just left after hurting his groin.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
The Thunder are going in a good direction though, it’s not like he’s going on a limb though.
I used to be able to rattle off Bull Durham verbatim but I doubt I could do it anymore.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
i want to get the barack obama chia pet
July 28th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Lloyd Christmas might be the greatest name in the history of cinema.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
You don’t need a quadrophonic Blaupunkt. What you need is a curveball.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Here’s Chris Paul’s three-part tw**t about the trade.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
Well if anyone would know you were pulling your hips out early it’d be Annie
July 28th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Yep I’m changing my vote for most quotable movie to Bull Durham.
“The rose goes in the front, big guy”
July 28th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Dumb and Dumber was great. I think Wedding Crashers is quotable, but only because I say the “I can put it wherever I want to” line and the Daquiri timeout line all the time.
Erroneous! Erroneous on both counts!
July 28th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Ya lollygag the ball around the infield. Ya lollygag your way down to first. Ya lollygag your way in and out of the dugout. Know what that makes you?
[Lollygaggers]
Lollygaggers. What’s our record?
[8 and 16]
8 and 16. How’d we win 8?
[It's a miracle.]
It’s a miracle.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
This has gone from most quotable movie of the 00’s to most quotable movie of all time. In that case… Blazing Saddles/Naked Gun/Big Lebowski/Best In Show/Dazed.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
You just got lesson number one: don’t think, it can only hurt the ball club.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Saving Silverman is a very good quote movie. A vastly underrated movie overall.
Anchorman, Superbad, Wedding Crashers, Old School…all bring funny quotes that can be used in every day life, which is what truly defines a great quote movie.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
“Relax, all right? Don’t try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they’re fascist. Throw some ground balls. It’s more democratic.”
or
“We need a live rooster to take the curse off Jose’s glove and nobody seems to know what to get Millie or Jimmy for their wedding present.”
“Okay, well, uh… candlesticks always make a nice gift, and uh, maybe you could find out where she’s registered and maybe a place-setting or maybe a silverware pattern. Okay, let’s get two! Go get ‘em!”
/now you’ve got me started…
July 28th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.
July 28th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
LeToya Luckett was one of the original members of Destiny’s Child. Rumor has it that she slept with Beyonce’s boyfriend* right after “No, No, No” came out.
*I possibly made that up

July 28th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
You do it, jpq. I got your back.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
NDub have you been following Marbury on twitter? It’s just as confusing as that webcast deal. Talks about love a lot. Then sends messages @ himself. Confuses the shit out of me.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
After this Yankees game jpq… I might need to take someone out… It’d be a pleasure
July 28th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
I tried for like 3 minutes to follow him… It made me hate him more than I already did.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
younglefty – I saw a little bit ago that he had an account. Started reading and got really confused so I clicked away. Still considering adding him. The guy isn’t just an oddball. I think he’s going a little crazy.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
fark. no win for jurrjens tonight. and sabathia gets battered while kaz enhances trade value. PLUS boston winning.
night would be capped with washburn getting pummeled.
i’ll wake up angry
July 28th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
It’s worth following him for a bit. He goes on these long diatribes that are like five updates long, but they’re all spaced out, so they show up in your feed really far apart. It’s kinda fun. It’s like a game called guess what the crazy person is rambling about now. Kinda makes me sad though. 13 years ago he was my favorite player on the planet.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
JPQ – You want me to take our Favre or Florio? Or ESPN? Continuing to talk about it and ask the man questions isn’t helping the rest us in the sanity department.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Randy Johnson has a torn rotator cuff.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
After this Yankees game jpq… I might need to take someone out… It’d be a pleasure
what are the Stankees doing? I’m watching Colin Powell on LKL (you know, old guy TV). I wish Colin Powell would have run in 2000, goddamnit!!
July 28th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
I wish McCain had won.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Mark Buerhle has set a major league record by setting down his 43rd consecutive hitter, he has not allowed a base runner through 5 innings.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Heard him speak in January of last year, JPQ. He’s never wanted to run. He spoke at an event for the company I was working for. His speech was outstanding though, even held a Q&A where he was quite candid.
Another commenter might have been there as well…
July 28th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
there’s a certain pitcher that is pitching quite well thru 5 innings tonight…
July 28th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
JPQ – You want me to take our Favre or Florio? Or ESPN? Continuing to talk about it and ask the man questions isn’t helping the rest us in the sanity department.
SC: judging by this poor clown’s tw++ts, I’d say Fahrvrhvre
July 28th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Pierzynski told Buerhle what the record was in between innings. This is fascinating. A guy that tops out at 87 is dominating Major league hitters.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
He’s been pretty perfect so far you say?
July 28th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Wasn’t there SC. Got screwed out of going to that. This year’s too (George H.W. Bush). I did hear second hand about Powell saying the thing he missed most about being Secretary of State was the plane he got to use.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
I wish Colin Powell would have run in 2000, goddamnit!!
I wish McCain had won.
yeah, I woulda taken either of them back then over GWB & Gore. I just think Powell could have been to the country in 2000 what Obama was in 2008, but with more conservative economics & military policies, which I would have felt a lot better about
July 28th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
there’s a certain pitcher that is pitching quite well thru 5 innings tonight…
He’s been pretty perfect so far you say?
No, I am NOT saying that. I don’t care if Buehrle dispells superstition, I fully believe in it and refuse to say your words.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
show a little respect for Ed Harris
July 28th, 2009 at 9:39 pm

He almost gave up a homer, Pods should have made that catch.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
well i think this sums up mark buehrle the best
July 28th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Obviously you don’t follow the commenter sportsgal on twitter. Let’s just say there were some provocative promises made should Buehrle throw two perfectos in a row.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Buehrle is a nice guy. But as I’ve said on here a million times: Fuck the White Sox.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
what, the fact that he holds the record for consecutive retired batters?
July 28th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Garrett Anderson on a bitch? Can you say that about him? Either way, he just homered to put the Braves up one in the top of the ninth.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
now i have to start stalking you people on twitter? its hard enough keeping up on all the other blogs i dont comment on
July 28th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
Just saw the Twit… Sportsgal… you floosie!!!
July 28th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
They just showed the NFL films version of the Pats regular season game against the Giants in 2007 to complete the perfect regular season.
Hilarious to hear Belicheck tell Vrabel he made a championship play and Seymour crow “Heart of a champion, heart of champion.”
Whoops.
Hilarious.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
late to the game, but Pee Wee’s Big Adventure is the most quotable movie ever. I quote that movie once a day, minimum, 20 years after it came out.

How does he do this? What, exactly, is his career at this point?
judging by how he left both the looks and the careers of Jessica Simpson and Vanessa Minnillo in tatters after be broke up w/ each of them, I’d call him The Cooler
July 28th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
I always asked myself what I did wrong when I see stuff like this. My kids are working for disney or better have really good jumpshots.
July 28th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
Two words for you my man: long snapper. Best job in the NFL. That was the consensus of the guys I worked with for the Falcons. To a man, they said they were going to teach their sons to be long snappers.
July 28th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Uh oh, KU-Mizzou game from last year on one of the fox sports channels…

Two words for you my man: long snapper. Best job in the NFL. That was the consensus of the guys I worked with for the Falcons. To a man, they said they were going to teach their sons to be long snappers.
funny you said that, lefty. I heard Golic a couple of months ago say his son (the ND center) already is one, and his ND TE son has been taught how to be one. He said the same thing about NFL career potential
July 28th, 2009 at 11:26 pm

And, even as a Twins fan, I have to take my hat off to Mark Buehrle. He’s always been the only player on that team I could ever stomach. Hell of a job by him, and I have no idea how Alexi Casilla is the one who broke it up.

I may be crazy, but I thought Zoolander was exceptionally quotable.
Nick Lachey has “it”. That’s all that matters. Chicks don’t think sensibly about thinks. They just want “it”.
Red Sox blew the game a few times tonight. They certainly don’t have “it”.
St Louis is taking it to the Dodgers right now. Just like they did last night. The Dodgers could use a little bit of a wake-up-call right now. Maybe they’re not the best team in the NL.
I’m personally hoping my boy is left handed. That makes the sports decisions a whole lot easier.

Disappointing …it’s like they filled four orders of “One Mad Bitch To Go Please” for those photos.

RIP Jim Johnson. Just got off work and saw the news. Very emotional for me. I loved that man, one of the greatest defensive coordinators of all time, and even more importantly, A GREAT MAN. very sad
