Bill James on Steroids
1-liner, Baseball, Steroids July 30th. 2009, 11:15amBill James on Steroids: “Steroids help the athlete resist the effects of aging … If you look into the future 40 or 50 years, I think it is quite likely that every citizen will routinely take anti-aging pills every day. How, then, are those people of the future—who are taking steroids every day—going to look back on baseball players who used steroids? They’re going to look back on them as pioneers. They’re going to look back at it and say, ‘So what?’” Most disarming voices in baseball: Vin Scully, Bill James, Bob Costas. (KC Confidential)

Agreed.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:18 am
Jose Canseco for president in 2048!
July 30th, 2009 at 11:20 am
Steroids are not HGH. Steroids are also not “anti-aging pills”
July 30th, 2009 at 11:27 am
my thoughts exactly magglio
July 30th, 2009 at 11:28 am
Over/Under 2018 before they just start allowing athletes to be chemically tuned machines?
I just got finished reading the comments from the last post last night and it seemed like there was a little bonding going on around this parts. JPQ is like the Archie Bunker (little less racism) around the parts fathering all the little tikes along.
Dinner party analogy cracked me up too. Spot on.
Carry on!

fixed

Well, right before they drop dead from a “Anti-aging pills” related heart attack I’n sure they will say ’so what?’.

Agreed. Lest people forget that one of the symptoms of steriod and HGH use is the body begins to break down over time and joint injuries become more common. Steriods and HGH may make a person bounce back easier from a workout, but they don’t make the bones more durable, the joints function better, or tendons more elastic.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:31 am
that’s a symptom of STEROID use…HGH has no known, long term side effects as of yet.

So the commercial where the stone statue breaks down isn’t true?

You’re right spencer. Mea culpa.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Well shit, if everybody wants to cheat, including the fans, it’s okay.
Whatever. We need to draw the line on moral relativism somewhere.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:37 am
we speak ‘merican round here, none of that french bullshit, lawya.
/spits
and if we pay to watch and attend sporting events, we should DEMAND our athletes take HGH.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:37 am
Canseco essentially said the same thing in his book. Although he is an idiot Juiced turned out to be pretty accurate
July 30th, 2009 at 11:42 am
SC: I guess I should start calling you “Meathead”. He was from Chicago also
July 30th, 2009 at 11:44 am
I’m not sure if this article is a joke or not. Fucking retarded.
@ Spence, HGH does have short and long term side effects already known. High blood pressure, joint problems, irregular heart beats, etc…

A lot will be told by examining how long these guys live. If Barry Bonds is wheeling out in a golf cart at an all star game in 30-40 years a la Musial/Williams, that will go a long way towards raising awareness of whether “steroids” really have significant long term impact on people.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:47 am
PROTTEEEEIINNNN, HGGGGHHHHH!!!!
July 30th, 2009 at 11:48 am
yet they’re minor and can be counteracted with other supplements, diet and exercise.
compared to steroids? shit…no contest.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:51 am
one more thing…those are all side effects OF ABUSE, not use. steroids can have effects even with regular dosages approved by doctors.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:52 am
@BetBot: What sucks is we wonlt know the long-term effects of the synthetic stuff Balco is putting out for a while now. It would be really interesting to find out athletes persevere after taking the newer synthetic drugs.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:54 am
truf… if you mean anabolic. Those things will tear your body up.
WHERE’S THE GODDAMN PROTEIN, MA?! FUCK!!
July 30th, 2009 at 11:55 am
id be willing to be that shit’s safer than your garden variety steroid stacks. the more expensive and controlled the substance, the safer and more effective it will be.
considering i don’t know jack shit about the stuff they were using, i could imagine it would take lower dosages than your common testosterone boosters, et al, and would be a much more chemically consistent compound than what kids or amateur athletes would get their hands on.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:57 am
so spence how long did it take you to become an expert on all things HGH?
July 30th, 2009 at 11:57 am
MUSCLE MILK!!! POWER BARS!!!
Does that make mrejr Gloria? I guess MATTRYAN or spencer or Taguchi would be Edith, since you’re constantly telling them to stifle themselves.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:57 am
@spence: Whatever it takes for me to live forever man. That’s all I care about.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:59 am
so spence how long did it take you to become an expert on all things HGH?
Not long after Tiger started using it

Most people break down and their body goes to shit after they’re 70 if they’re lucky to get that far. So instead of 10 years of that, I can take pills that can give me 30 years of that?
Fucking brilliant!
July 30th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
my soph year in college, i lost 110 lbs. and became a health nut and workout freak. got up to 225 lbs with 5% bodyfat after making eating and working out my life (290 lbs to 179 the bulked back up) so, naturally, i considered taking steroids and shit just to see how far i could take it all.
did a TON of research while not paying attention during class and, well, i guess that’s it really.
July 30th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
lefty…..good one. but i will pay you back oh yes i will
July 30th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
if you are not a professional athlete and take hgh chances are you were a huge nerd in high school and lack any self-esteem (nice popcorn muscles)or you are ugly as sin and look about 10 years older than your actual age
July 30th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Does that make mrejr Gloria? I guess MATTRYAN or spencer or Taguchi would be Edith, since you’re constantly telling them to stifle themselves.
watch yourself, lefty. You’re angling to be the guy in the top right corner
July 30th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
james is right as usual.
why take something that makes one bigger, stronger, faster, heal quicker, look younger and prevent aging??? why would one ever do that???
