Canseco Claims There’s a Dirty Hall of Famer, Scary If True
Baseball, Drugs, Steroids July 31st. 2009, 1:00pm
Shockingly, since they did so much thorough, proactive reporting on performance enhancing drugs, the BBWAA may have been duped by a doper.Ā Jose Canesco told ESPNās Pedro Gomez that baseball had a Hall of Famer who used performance enhancing drugs.
“When you tell me something I didn’t already know, I’ll be surprised,” Canseco told ESPN. “And I’ll tell you this, Major League Baseball is going to have a big, big problem on their hands when they find out they have a Hall of Famer who’s used.”
“It’s not about naming names,” he said. “I’ve never had anything against the players. It’s always been against Major League Baseball. I know who’s on that list, but like I said, it’s not about attacking the players. It’s about the machine that allowed this to happen. What I speak out of my mouth is the truth. It burns like fire. Just remember, I have never lied about this subject.”
Canseco said the player used, not that he tested positive in 2003, which would eliminate everyone except Henderson.Ā Assuming the āSteroid Eraā stretched from the late 1980s until now, here are the 20 Hall of Famers who played during the era.Ā Those with an asterisk were teammates with Canseco.
1993: Reggie Jackson*
1994: Steve Carlton
1995: Mike Schmidt
1999: Robin Yount, Nolan Ryan*, George Brett
2000: Carlton Fisk
2001: Kirby Puckett
2002: Ozzie Smith
2003: Eddie Murray, Gary Carter,
2004: Paul Molitor, Dennis Eckersley*
2005: Ryne Sandberg, Wade Boggs
2007: Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn
2008: Rich Gossage*
2009: Jim Rice, Rickey Henderson*
Henderson seems like a plausible miscreant.Ā He stood out and won an MVP with Canseco on the āBash Brothersā Aās teams.Ā Henderson also would have been fresh on the brain, having just been inducted.Ā Though, Canseco told Mike Missanelli he had “no knowledge” of Rickey Henderson’s steroid use.
For what itās worth now, Henderson has denied it.Ā In a 2005 interview, he also mentions discussing drug use with Canseco.
“When I talk to Jose (Canseco), I tell him, ‘I played with you. You kept that secret from me. That wasn’t right,’ ” Henderson said. “I’m glad it didn’t come my way, but I think they cheated me out of it. When you see how much success people have had, I probably would have been Superman.”
Canseco said Henderson was not the Hall of Famer.Ā If he is truthful and you move down the list, it gets scary.
Cal Ripken played on Oriolesā teams with Rafael Palmeiro and Brady Anderson.Ā The two combined for 89 home runs in 1996, the year all seven Oriolesā hitters who played full seasons hit more than 20 HR.
Tony Gwynn, who hit 10 HR just twice from 1984 to 1996, hit career highs of 17 in 1997 and 16 in 1998 (at 37 and 38), as a teammate of known steroid-abuser Ken Caminiti.
Kirby Puckett from 1984 to 1985 hit 4 HR in 1,248 AB.Ā In 1986, he hit 31 HR.Ā It is a bit early, but perhaps Bill James had a point.
We know there are about 100 names from 2003 on the list yet to be released.Ā Some steroid users retired before 2003.Ā Some , presumably, stopped in 2003, scared of any testing.
The league, teams, players and media members profited from the steroid era.Ā It was exciting, insane and lucrative.Ā No one, including those whose explicit responsibility it was, stepped forward to stop it.Ā The resulting climate has invalidated common sense about innocence.Ā Speculation will be rampant, frantic and, sadly, fair.

Why will it be scary? How is finding out a baseball player — or any athlete for that matter — who is the hall of fame and used steroids remotely scary?
July 31st, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Tony Gwynn? Since when do Steroids make you fat?
July 31st, 2009 at 1:05 pm
My first reaction to, and then I remembered Mariotti columns.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:06 pm
My money is on Nolan Ryan.

It’s scary because of the ramifications… if you already have one in the hall, do you kick him out? If not, then what would the case be against bonds et. all? The idea is that the hall is pure, and free of steroids, thus all the talk about keeping them out. it the hall is already tainted, well it makes it difficult to keep others out
July 31st, 2009 at 1:07 pm
why no asterisk by wade boggs? boston?
July 31st, 2009 at 1:09 pm
ryne sandberg…and im a cubs fan
July 31st, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Boggs and Canseco were teammates in Tampa
July 31st, 2009 at 1:11 pm
But thinking people already know the hall isn’t pure, and even if it was the idea of it not being so is only scary to people whose sense of morality hinges on things that fundamentally don’t matter.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:11 pm
that was my point irish
July 31st, 2009 at 1:12 pm
I love that he claims he’s not about naming names. Except when he’s pushing another book
July 31st, 2009 at 1:12 pm
I’m overcome with trepidation trying to assertain whom the plausible miscreant may be
July 31st, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Tony Gwynn, who hit 10 HR just twice from 1984 to 1996, hit career highs of 17 in 1997 and 16 in 1998 (at 37 and 38), as a teammate of known steroid-abuser Ken Caminiti.
A jump from 10 Home Runs to 16 is not a huge one. It’s a little suspicious, I’ll grant, that it occured when he was in his late 30s, but that’s not the sort of statistical outlier that just screams “PED use” to me.
He’s not in the Hall yet, but you could just as easily throw Craig Biggio in there using the same argument: He only hit 20+ HRs 4 times before the age of 35 and then did it 3 years in a row from ages 37-39. He also siginificantly changed his batting stance at age 37.
He also played with Caminiti in the early 90s and again in the early 2000’s. Are all those things coincidence?
July 31st, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Ryan was a freak of nature. The only thing he took was Nuprin.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Yeah I have a feeling that idea is gone, if not now, then soon. You cant pick and choose anymore, we have an incomplete list of who was doing what so let em all in.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Ryan was a freak of nature. The only thing he took was Nuprin (and names, after kickin’ ass)
/yee ha’d!!
July 31st, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Itās scary because of the ramifications⦠if you already have one in the hall, do you kick him out?
Are the kicking Gaylord Perry out for flagrantly violating the rules of baseball virtuallly every game for his entire career? I mean if they knew then what they knew now about that guy, there is no way they would have voted him in…wait what?
July 31st, 2009 at 1:15 pm
I thought everyone assumed Biggio and (especially) Bagwell were roid guys. Is this not the case? Astros fans obviously might be biased here.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Ooh, sorry - we should’ve explained that we were looking for players that actually deserved to be in the HOF.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:16 pm
But thinking people already know the hall isnāt pure,
Exactly. Ty Cobb was well known to be a dirty player. Bob Gibson allegedly threw a spitball during his outstanding 1968 season. Mickey Mantle was noted as a being an occasional user of greenies in the 1950s. The list goes on. So I do not see that this is ’scary’ that a person used and is in the hall. If those allegations above are not considered ‘cheating’, then I suppose I can see where this naivete comes from.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:16 pm
well said
July 31st, 2009 at 1:16 pm
if griffey’s name comes out i would lose all faith in humanity. actually i wouldnt because nothing is really shocking. i guess i could say that about maddux though. smoltz’s naame wouldnt be that shocking at all
July 31st, 2009 at 1:16 pm
unfortunately, it’s gotta be rickey.
im praying it’s cal ripken tho…that’d mean i win the “cal ripken is the most overrated ’star’ ever” argument without any debate.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:17 pm
That response is even more specious than the headline itself. Of all those HOFers listed above, at least 50%, most likely closer to 75%, roided. You know it, I know it, the whole world knows it. More effin steroid nonsense.
Good gawd, I’ll be glad when pretty much every player has been outed as a steroid user, and we’ll never have to hear about this crap again. And that day will come.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Nolan Ryan is an admitted pill popper.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:19 pm
I’m an astros fan and I think Bagwell juiced. Not sure about Biggio
July 31st, 2009 at 1:19 pm
cal ripken is a selfish bastard who refused to let poor minimum salary guys ever play
July 31st, 2009 at 1:20 pm
I thought everyone assumed Biggio and (especially) Bagwell were roid guys. Is this not the case? Astros fans obviously might be biased here.
I am biased, but I do not believe that they were. It’s not a common assumption amongst Astros fans. But, as I said, we are a biased lot.
Bagwell’s shoulder injuries late in his bareer are suspicious and appear to be the type of injury symptomic of steriod use over time. I’m holding out hope that that’s not the case for either one of them. Bagwell was my hero growing up and Biggio is now the head baseball coach where I went to high school in Houston.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Cal Ripken’s “accomplishment” causes people to think he’s overrated, but his numbers at shortstop (especially early in his career) show that he deserves the adulation. That said, I really don’t like him so I am also rooting for his fall.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:21 pm
until someone would bring up manny ramirez who has been busted twice for steroid use.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Astros fan here… and that whole team was ‘roided up for years. Including Bagwell and probably Biggio. A look at the mid-90s Astros roster is a litany of suspected users, most notably Caminiti (and yeah, don’t overlook Luis Gonzalez either).
July 31st, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Iām an astros fan and I think Bagwell juiced.
I spoke too soon I suppose.
Oh and bareer=career. Typing is not my strong suit.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:23 pm
yea griffey is the guy who would probably end my mlb fandom if his name comes out
July 31st, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Duffy owes us an asterisk next to Wade
July 31st, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Cal Ripken Jr. bangs d00ds.
/True Story
July 31st, 2009 at 1:25 pm
manny’s not overrated at all. that’s simply retarded.
two really good years, and three good years out of 20+ does not a hall of famer make.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Looking at some old Yankees Classics on YES absolutely suggests that Reggie Jackson in no way, shape or form, used any PEDs (at least at that time). He might have been as wiry a slugger as Guidry was a power pitcher.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:26 pm
apparently, the media is working on going after the guy, and he is on this list. would be a big story, considering the city he starred in
July 31st, 2009 at 1:26 pm
please let it be cal.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:26 pm
A look at the mid-90s Astros roster is a litany of suspected users, most notably Caminiti (and yeah, donāt overlook Luis Gonzalez either).
Gonzalez and Steve Finley both had surprisingly good numbers after leaving the Astros.
Hakeen, grungedave, you guys might be right. I might have been living under my own cloud of fan naivete for years. Wonder if this will drop the value of my Jeff Bagwell autographed ball. I was always more of an Alan Ashby fan anyway.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:26 pm
Bagwellās shoulder injuries late in his bareer are suspicious and appear to be the type of injury symptomic of steriod use over time.
I remember reading a story about Bagwell during Spring Training near the end of his career. He had apparently lost 20 pounds or so and said that it was because his shoulder couldn’t take the heavy lifting. This was during the beginning of the PED drama, so it wasn’t questioned in the media.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Astros fan here⦠and that whole team was āroided up for years. Including Bagwell and probably Biggio. A look at the mid-90s Astros roster is a litany of suspected users, most notably Caminiti (and yeah, donāt overlook Luis Gonzalez either).
I’ve seen Luis Gonzalez referenced as a steroid guy quite often, he seems pretty likely, same with Bagwell obviously. I don’t know how your media plays the Cardinals/Astros “rivalry”, but the St. Louis media loved to say during the late 90s/00s that the teams had “a great mutual respect for each other” and Larussa would always go on about how they “play the game the right way”. I’ve always assumed this meant that since LaRussa obviously doesn’t frown on steroid use he was complimenting the astros for sharing his perspective.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:28 pm
You know who didn’t juice?…Frank Thomas.

How cryptic. What do you know TBL, and what aren’t you telling us?

another name that would hurt…because i always liked the big hurt. even if he was supposedly a diva but i wouldnt be surprised because he was/is a big dude.

Luis Gonzalez’s career stats…his 2001 season just seems to scream PED: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gonzalu01.shtml

I still fondly remember the day when the Cardinals built up a 11-0 lead on the Astros in the Dome, but then we came back to win 13-11. It was on Joe Torre’s birthday too, so it was an extra special fuck you on that day.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Ripken’s OPS+ seasons over 110.
1982 115
1983 144
1984 145
1985 124
1986 123
1988 128
1990 114
1991 162
1998 143
And he was well over 100, again, at shortstop many of those other years.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:36 pm
what he knows is it was ted williams(thousands of boston fans just searched for my i.p. address ..im a dead man)why he isnt telling us is because he doesnt want a big red b painted on his car.

I remember when he did an interview and someone asked him what he used and he said, “just creatine”. bullshit.

I remember watching that game in disbelief. Bill Brown was so happy
July 31st, 2009 at 1:41 pm
If it’s Ripken, he should be booted from the Hall, not for cheating, but for putting up those shabby numbers while on the juice. What a waste of steroids.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:41 pm
take it easy jack lalanne
July 31st, 2009 at 1:42 pm
My only beef with Ripken is his homerun in his last all star game in Seattle. It really looked like the pitcher threw him a meatball on purpose.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:42 pm
I remember watching that game in disbelief. Bill Brown was so happy
I was listening to it on the radio, so I got plenty of “Holy Toledo”’s from Milo Hamilton. Good times.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:44 pm
that was when the game didn’t count, when it was treated as you know, an exhibition. stupid selig.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:45 pm
It really looked like the pitcher threw him a meatball on purpose.
I think it was Chan Ho Park, and he admitted to throwing him a meatball. But this was before the All-Star Game counted

I did not know this
July 31st, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Thomas was always a big dude. Played TE at Auburn when Bo Jackson was there.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:51 pm
It’s not Ripken. Everyone of these guys spent time on the DL while taking roids because they pushed their body too much. Whether Ripken’s numbers are HOF worthy or not, his durability should be his best defense.
And just take one look at Ricky Henderson’s physique at the ripe age of 45 and tell me he never took roids.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:52 pm
They discussed this on M& M this morning. Greeny said in a more recent interview on a different station, I think this morning, that Canseco backed off the stmt and implied he wasn’t referring to one specific player, just that as a group there will likely be someone in the hall who used PED’s. So, unless something more recent than what they said at about 9:30 this morning, that headline is not accurate. The initial stmt by Canseco was ambiguous which I believe he has since clarified.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:53 pm
And the argument for Griffey not being a roid guy is he wasn’t durable because he didn’t take roids. There is no body type/ethnicity/skill set that proves or disproves steroid use. No one is automatically exempt and no one is automatically guilty.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Also, in that same interview I referenced, he apparently said he had no knowledge regarding Rickey Henderson.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:54 pm
He never took Roids.

July 31st, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Olney is now anouncing his scoops on Twitter? Doesn’t he get paid to do that stuff for ESPN? And if it isn’t up to snuff for an ESPN story, they surely can’t be happy having his name attached to it.

July 31st, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Agree 100%. If a blogger did that he would be skewered, but if it is Olney it’s okay. The real question is this: what would have happened had Olney written that on a blog? Marinate on that gents.

July 31st, 2009 at 3:15 pm
The HOF has admitted racists, spitballers, adulterers, drug abusers and everything else under the sun. It’s supposed to reflect the history of baseball and baseball has, for the last 15-20 years, been on a steroids and PED binge. Let them in and let it be known that any player in this era played under the cloud of suspicion.
The only people who care about the “purity” of the sport are 85-year old baseball writers.
