Tiger Wears Red On Sundays
Bill Simmons, Golf August 2nd. 2009, 3:45pm
Tiger Woods actually made the cut at this week’s Buick Open. Was he more motivated to kick some ass because Buick is one of his favorite sponsors? He was leading when he teed off this morning and he usually wins when he leads entering Sunday. Maybe Nike should look into some advertising at the ‘10 British Open. Just a suggestion. Surely the most influential man in Oregon sports can make that happen.
Anyway, talk Tiger or the Bridezillas marathon on WE. (/nttawwt) Or you can go vote for the EssGee’s. Help Simmons proove that Almost Famous is the best movie of the decade. (Um, no.) If anything pops up, send it along.

It may not be the “best” movie, but it is probably my favorite of this decade.
And I hope Tiger wins, because that’s the only way we find out who wins. It’s unbearable to see all the sports site headlines that read “Tiger shoots 68, 4 strokes back in (insert tournament here)” and they don’t tell you who’s winning the damn thing. That’s how far it’s gotten with him.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:13 pm
That would be a fine theory if Buick were still sponsoring Tiger. That ended in lat 2008. I guess when you’re in bankruptcy, it’s hard to afford Tiger Woods.
Here’s a list of the companies who can.

That video gives me chills every time i watch it TBL

That’s how far it’s gotten with him.
That’s because Tiger is bigger than the sport.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Sweet, another youtube video not showing a leg getting taken off. That photographer ruined the whole thing!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:24 pm
Sure, but how fricking hard is it to insert the guy’s name in the headline, or insert 10 seconds of video of him making a shot?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Very few things make me cry. One of those things is AI: Artificial Intelligence. Why am I watching this movie again?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:40 pm
At least Tiger still wins on a regular basis as to justify it, as opposed to the Yankees or Cowboys, who couldn’t win anything on the winningest day of the year with an electrical winning machine.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Well judging by your ‘best concert’ post I’d say it’s because you have horrific taste.
BOOM!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:45 pm
You mean you don’t approve of the “Yankees Nearly Swept by Some Team” headlines we’re bound to get today?

bill simmons is completely retarded if he thinks almost famous can hang with any of those movies.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:27 pm
I’ve never seen Almost Famous, don’t really plan on it either, not sure why.

I’ve had three different people tell me how much they love that movie after they read that column.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:32 pm

I should have included that I thought Almost Famous was little more than a novelty movie

Ban over
August 2nd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
people: Is Aaron Hill for real?
the bluejays 2b has 26 hr and 76 RBI with 55ish games left.
his previous career highs: 17-78 in 2007.
his slugging is up by .140 and his OPS is up by nearly .200
what is going on with this guy? he was a 19th round pick in fantasy, and i want to keep him, but only if people think this isn’t a freak year.
August 2nd, 2009 at 7:28 pm
when i read ban over i was thinking pet rose was reinstated
August 2nd, 2009 at 7:47 pm
Kevin Gregg is awesome.
August 2nd, 2009 at 7:55 pm
TBL, I’m biased because he’s an LSU product. All I can say is that there have been about a dozen LSU middle infielders who were supposed to do this, and none of them ever came close to being good in the bigs. Todd Walker was the closest up to now.
I’ll just say he was a former first round pick, but I don’t think anybody predicted this power explosion.
August 2nd, 2009 at 8:17 pm
I think TBL banned everybody but me.
August 2nd, 2009 at 8:20 pm
hitch on TBS. never been a fan of kevin james; this is a straight up romantic comedy, and i dont mind it.
August 2nd, 2009 at 8:51 pm

You nailed it. It was fine or whatever in the theater, but I’m not at all intested in ever seeing it again. And I hate Goldie Hawn’s daughter.

/I’m not commenting.
//Might get a ban’d.

Wire season 1 completed…going to try and keep from starting season 2 until next week.

Almost Famous is a very solid movie, but it is fascinating predicting the results to these EssGee’s before you submit your answer. Think what would the “punk over-entitled frat boy” select and I assure you that will be the most popular answer. It shows how SG readership got younger, stupider, and lamer – and why his writing has deteriorated so rapidly. With such a predictable readership, there is no point in trying harder – they wouldn’t notice.
August 2nd, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Yeah I was pleasantly surprised. Eva Mendes makes everything good.
August 2nd, 2009 at 9:34 pm
truth.
August 2nd, 2009 at 9:45 pm
somebody say eva mendes?
August 2nd, 2009 at 9:56 pm
I guess I’m different. I liked almost everything about Almost Famous, including Kate Hudson (I know she’s mostly unbearable). The only thing I didn’t like was the “Tiny Dancer” scene.
“We hate each other. The lead singer is a dick. We almost blew our big opportunity. Oh wait, an Elton John song is on the radio. Let’s all sing it together and everything will be okay.”
Another aside: I liked Kevin James in The King of Queens, but I have zero interest in seeing Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Pretend it’s the year 2029. Tiger is about 53 years old, and let’s say he’s been retired for 5 years. I am trying to imagine what the hell he does besides sleep on a mountain of $100 bills. What’s the most likely:
a. GOP Senator from the Sunshine State.
b. embroiled in trying to prevent the release up his ex-wife Elin’s tell all novel about his crazy fetishes
c, sweating out 12 senior tour events a year because the course looks good, his swings feels good, he likes his chances
d. recluse, owns a chain of islands in hawaii, plays the Masters, hosts his tourney, and is invisible the other 50 weeks (not including commercials)
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:14 pm
when tiger retires, we’ll never hear from him again. he’ll play at the masters the longest, and play the other majors, but i got a feeling once he hits 19…he gone.
and red sucks…tiger goes out and wins wearing red, i get a 91 and dent my 5 iron in a fit of rage. i want my money back.
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:22 pm
spence what track?
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Tiger disappears forever that long from now. Completely. Like howard hughes.n
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:24 pm
thunder hill
granted, the place is known as a torture track, but i still suck.
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:27 pm
pretty funny episode of hung, didnt think id laugh at it but it was watchable.
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:27 pm
I know it, and avoid it. The haul out to Madison is a bit much for me as well, If I am going to hoof it I’ll go Little Mountain, but typically play Highland Blue a lot, some Manakiki and a slew of other places.
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Maybe he’ll replace Johnny Miller
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:31 pm
spencer – Taking a look at that site, they have some pretty reasonable rates. Any truth to this claim:
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:33 pm
yea…it’s way the fuck out there, but we did last minute golfer and paid $22.75 for 18 and a cart and figured it was more than worth it.
little mountain and manakiki are fucking awesome. ive gone to manakiki four times this season and it’s been in much better condition than the last two years. i used to do the blue at highland all the time because it’s close to my office, but just got sick to death of it.
you ever head out to fowler’s mill?
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:38 pm
lefty…there’s a few that are just awesome, but ohio has way too many quality golf courses to say something that retarded.
but it’s easily one of the most absurd tests of golf in the NE ohio area. it’s deceptive as hell and there are multiple holes with blind water hazards…not much rough because there are trees everywhere and some severe greens.
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Yeah I’ve played Mill. When I’ve played there, I’ve noticed there is no graduated rough so it’s pretty penal a foot off the fairway (fair enough, I know why they call it the rough) and there is no chance for recovery shots anywhere. I like the risk/reward nature of LMCC more, being a 14 handicap it helps me out.
Lefty – this is why Little Mountain is a solid course.
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Looks like Tennessee is gonna pimp Eric Berry for the Heisman.
August 2nd, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Nice. The best part of my job in the golf business was interviewing prospective beverage cart girls.
August 2nd, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Hitch is on my list of movies I always watch when its on.
I’ll show myself out now.
August 2nd, 2009 at 11:34 pm
moving SUCKS, 12 hours left on my lease and I’ve barely started.
August 3rd, 2009 at 1:07 am
yes it does. i just re-upped my lease in this shithole so i didn’t have to deal with moving again. best of luck to you, and i hope when it’s all over you get drunk as shit to celebrate.
August 3rd, 2009 at 2:55 am
I hope you don’t have much stuff. Get rid of as much as you can, including especially many books that just sit on a shelf.
I just finished my move for all of 7 miles locally. Other than prep and shipping out stuff, it was six days since last Sunday afternoon plus before and after work on an evening shift. By Saturday, I spent the whole damn day as a vegetable in bed. It would have been like working more than two full-time jobs I think. Now I don’t want to look at an empty box with clear tape for a good long while.
Now everything is included in a furnished though smaller place with no lease and no utility bills, so I am a “free agent.”
Sure tradeoffs in space, but it is worth it.
You don’t need as much stuff as you think you do I have learned until finally you buy yourself a nice house hopefully in a spacious place without too many annoying asshole and ninnie couple neighbours and avoiding the soon-to-be-antiquated scam of homeowners’ associations.
