2009 NFL Preview: Atlanta Falcons
2009 NFL Previews, Video August 7th. 2009, 2:00pm
It’s not happening again. The Falcons are not going 11-5. They are not making the playoffs. The schedule’s too difficult, a below-average defense lost its best LB (Brooking), the secondary’s too young, and Roddy White’s holdout, coupled with No. 3 receiver Harry Douglas being lost for the season has the team scrambling for alternative options at WR. How desperate are they at wideout? Marty Booker. He was released by the Bears, who only have the weakest WR corps in the NFL. (But you know a photo of this sick grab is hanging above his fireplace.)
Now that our Debbie Downer portion of the preview is over, let’s say some nice things about Atlanta.
We hear the strip clubs are phenomenal. The city is clean. The people are friendly. The hotels are pretty sweet. How tight is this 1987 Hawks jersey? The airport has a bevy of really tasty food options. Remember the Brian Oliver-Dennis Scott-Kenny Anderson trio that reached the Final Four? Good times.
As you can see above, Tony Gonzalez has arrived. Even though he’s 33 1/2, we’re pretty sure he’s going to catch around 65 passes. And that’s with or without Roddy White. (Also, his wife is wonderful to look at.)
Michael Turner will probably rush for 1,500 yards, but fantasy football owners, beware of the curse of 370! We got that in ESPN the Mag’s fantasy football preview. Basically, it says that “running backs who cross the 370-carry threshold one season tend to see their stock tumble in the next … In the history of the NFL, 27 RBs prior to Turner have amassed 370 or more carries in a season, and all but one of them (LT in 2002) declined in terms of total fantasy points the next year.” In real football, even if Turner struggles, Jerious Norwood isn’t a bad backup. Both are better than Jamal Anderson, who is still living off that one great 1,800 yard season.
[Ahhh, Madden and Summerall. Those were the days.]
Matt Ryan’s backup isn’t Steve Bartkowski (love that helmet), but rather Chris Redman. As far as backup QBs go, that’s akin to buying tickets to a Chris Rock show and then him calling in sick and having to stomach Louis CK or something. Wait, why are we talking about backup QBs? Here’s what matters: Vegas has Atlanta’s over/under for wins at 8. The vaunted football outsiders have the Falcons going 7-9. We’ll say this about the brutal schedule – if they can somehow manage a 6-6 mark after 12 games, the playoffs will be within reach because they close at home against New Orleans and Buffalo, and on the road against the Jets and Bucs. Four very winnable games. Getting there, though, won’t be easy.
Go ahead and chalk up road losses to New England, Dallas, Carolina, and the Giants. Philly and Washington both visit the ATL. Yup, start thinking about 2010.
And despite the first paragraph, we like what the Falcons are building in Atlanta. But this year, we’ve got them going 7-9.
NFC East: Dallas Cowboys | Philadelphia Eagles | New York Giants | Washington Redskins
NFC North: Chicago Bears | Detroit Lions | Minnesota Vikings | Green Bay Packers
NFL South: Tampa Bay Bucs

Agree with everything, Falcons are doing good things but they aren’t winning more than 6 or 7 games this year.

second or thirded…or whatever.
two steps forward, one step back.

Here’s the problem I have with FO’s little theory — isn’t a HUGE reason for their fantasy points going down have to do with the simple fact that they don’t get nearly as many carries (opportunities) to produce the same numbers?
Of course they’re going to go down.

Gonzo should have a really good year with teams trying to stack it up to stop Turner.

true story – someone once said the thing about dave coulier

I got sick when I saw that there was an Anderson video embedded in this post. I don’t even have to click it to know that it is from the NFC championship game. I has been 11 years and I still get pissed about that game.
Oh and yes the Atlanta Falcons will come back to earth this year.

Tough division where everyone fights like dogs and a tough all-around schedule.
They’re going to do what the Saints did in 2006 — take a step back, take some lumps and try to build a tougher, better team that can compete every season as opposed to once every 5 years.
Foulc*nts go 6-10
August 7th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
cut. it. out.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
I love this site. Never in the history of the Falcons have they made the playoffs in back to back years.
/Falcons suck
August 7th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
I’m a big believer in FO’s “Curse of 370 Theory.”
August 7th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
have you ever actually watched keith brooking play? he has been absolutely terrible the last 3 years. addition by subtraction. it’s trouble for dallas if he gets any significant run on their team.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
7-9
August 7th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
370 is so random. has anyone crunched the stats at 350 or 360 or 325?
August 7th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
ATL’s schedule is brutal. I believe they play every team in the NFC east this year after the teams have their bye. Douglas going down is HUGE. He is going to be a great slot WR. Atl could have had White, Douglas, Jenkins and Tony G as WRs/TE with Norwood coming out of the backfield for a scary offense. I see 8 wins as the best-case scenario, but I also think the division is going to struggle this year, so 9 wins may win the title.
I laughed when I read this. If you think Brooking was the best anything on the falcons you are retarded. Loften, as a rookie, was head and shoulders better than him. Hell, losing Boley to NYG was much worse than Brooking. He lost it 3 years ago and has since been stealing money. Leave it up to jerry jones to pay a has-been.

all i know is if its 4th and long throw it to jenkins
August 7th, 2009 at 2:33 pm

i think that’s the point of their argument…it’s a threshold, and through their research, 370 seems to be that number.
FO is all about proving that things AREN’T random.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Probably because 370 fit their argument the best.

They’re not perfect, but they’re the best at what they do.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
is brooking what he was in his 20s? nope.

but are you thrilled with the mike peterson pickup?
and do you really like nicholas and lofton?
August 7th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Duder, you’re right i just youtube’d it cuz i knew i fucked up, ha
August 7th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
What’s funny is had Douglas not gone down I would have said Ryan would be a Pro-Bowler this year for sure. Teams are going to stack the line and make him win games and if he had 4 legit options every time he dropped back it would have been nasty. Tony G should have a good year this year nonetheless. Atl simply has too brutal of a schedule to get to 10 wins. 9 wins would be badass, but I just don’t see that happening.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
basically any 4th down hes cool

Drunkards, Light Posts, and the Myth of 370
August 7th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
hells no im not volunteering. i dont need stats to tell me turner wont come close to duplicating last year’s #’s.
like some of what FO does. eager to see what happens with this Rams prediction. ESPN whiffed with its Texans prediction last year.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
nice find, mike. that kind of stuff is fun. wonder how the FO will counter (or if they will)
August 7th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
A’s release Giambi.
exhibit A as to why guys take steroids.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Lofton yes!! He is going to be a very good, solid LB. Peterson is better than Keith. I’m not saying he is great (at all) but he is better than KB. Nicolas is too. You simply don’t understand how bad KB got so quickly. He is a great man. Great character and very friendly, but he is not a good LB any more.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
probably not considering they always disclaim that it’s nothing more than a guideline.
FO is the bestest.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
big ben back to the pistons for 1.3 mil.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
that’s low.
Louis CK = hilarious
August 7th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
dave coulier took creepy uncle to a whole new level
August 7th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
I agree that they have a tough schedule. And I sgree that the playoffs will be tough to grab this year, and I’m being realistic going 8-8.
But other than that, this post is off-target. The only negative on offense is Harry Douglas tearing his ACL. That sucks bad, he was going to be a big part of the 3rd down set this year IMO. Our offense improved slightly by adding TG as a red zone target… and wait to see Norwood on many more top 10 play lists this year.
And the defense improved… Keith Brooking is a nice guy as Gods said, but the best LB?!? Wow. The defense is very young, but it is a better squad than last year. Doesn’t mean they will have a good defense by any means, but on paper the prediction has to be that they are better.
August 7th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Agreed. TBL never mentioned Matt Ryan was poo-poo against real defenses last year. And he’ll be facing a lot more of them this year than last year.
/file that under the bad news section.

I didn’t get the chance to get into a TBL fantasy league so I’m making one.

Go against the FO guys at your own peril when drafting your fantasy teams. I certainly wouldn’t risk a first round pick on Turner this year.
And Louis CK is not funny. I regard Louis CK much in the same way as I regarded Napoleon Dynamite. I want to understand why everyone thinks it’s funny, but I just don’t see it.
August 7th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
I’ll second that Louis CK is funny. Uproariously funny. Unabashedly funny. But you have to relate. Obviously, if you’re 20, or 25 and some fat old guy with two daughters is talking about how shitty it is to be a fat, unhealthy old guy getting yet another pathetic handjob from his poor wife, it’s not funny to you.
What makes him funny is how painfully real he is.
August 7th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
To be fair, that catch was against a jr. high school team…
