Sizing Up the NFL’s 8 QB Battles in Training Camp
NFL August 7th. 2009, 11:45am
With a nudge from the LA Times, here are the eight best training camp QB battles. Our early decision in italics.
New York Jets: Kellen Clemens vs. Mark Sanchez.
Bizarre situation in which two players with the same agent are vying for the top job. For a variety of reasons – new face of the franchise, jersey sales, financial investment, etc – Sanchez has the advantage. Actual play on the field? Clemens might make more sense, seeing as how he’s been with the team three years. The guess here is that short of injury, Sanchez starts on opening day. And when he’s locked in as the starter, CBS can make it official – Nantz and Simms will call the Jets’ first game in Houston. The pick: Sanchez.
San Francisco 49ers: Shaun Hill vs. Alex Smith
Smith was the No. 1 pick in 2005. He’s been dreadful (blame the coaching situation or his small hands if you want). Hill has started 10 games with San Fran, and won seven of them. This one’s a no-brainer. The pick: Hill.
Cleveland Browns: Brady Quinn vs. Derek Anderson
We’re bullish on Quinn. Anderson had one successful year (2007) against a joke of a schedule. The franchise foolishly sunk a lot of money into Anderson, but we’re of the opinion that Quinn does everything better and if they don’t start him, the year will be a disaster. The pick: Quinn.
Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford vs. Daunte Culpepper
Culpepper’s shed some weight from his bulky frame and presumably still throws a great deep ball. Do you give Stafford half a season before starting him? If you throw the $41 million man into the mix early, can you shatter his confidence? Stafford’s obviously the future, but there are some fierce defensive teams on the schedule early (Minnesota, Chicago, Pittsburgh), so we’d name Culpepper the starter and ease Stafford during the Cleveland, Green Bay, Cincinnati stretch. The pick: Culpepper.
Minnesota Vikings: Sage Rosenfels vs. Tarvaris Jackson
Probably the biggest toss-up. Jackson knows the offense and knows the players. He took the team to the postseason (where he was terrible against Philly). Rosenfels has a better arm. He’s had his moments in Houston (good and bad). What we’d really like to see happen is Minnesota get Mike Vick and throw him into the mix midway through the season when he becomes eligible. Week one? All you want is a QB to manage the game and let AP and the defense do the rest. The pick: Rosenfels.
Oakland Raiders: Jeff Garcia vs. JaMarcus Russell
Absolutely no debate here. We haven’t heard one compelling argument for Russell (and winning his final two games of 2008 doesn’t count). Garcia’s a proven winner and based on the schedule, he’s got enough moxie to get these guys to 5-2 going into San Diego prior to the bye week. The pick: Garcia.
Denver Broncos: Kyle Orton vs. Chris Simms
Surprised this one’s even listed as a ‘battle.’ Orton had some success in Chicago. Simms was a high school legend in New Jersey, underwhelmed a bit in Texas, and hasn’t done much to impress in the NFL (ouch!). The pick: Orton
Tampa Bay: Byron Leftwich vs. Luke McCown vs. Josh Freeman
Is there a less sexy competition? A portly guy whose best days are behind him; a guy who we also confuse with Josh McCown, and a rookie from Kansas State who the scouts love, but has never impressed us. We’d toss Freeman into the fire and have him become best buds with Kellen Winslow, who should be his top target this season. The pick: Freeman.

$13 mil guaranteed isn’t a ton of money. and he’s been paid most of it already and the browns still have some decent cap room so…whatever.
DA has the MUCH MUCH MUCH better arm. im not the biggest quinn fan because while DA is inaccurate with an absolute cannon, quinn is inaccurate with a pea shooter.

but we’re of the opinion that Quinn does everything better and if they don’t start him, the year will be a disaster.
the word regardless fits somewhere in here, near disaster.

I’d go the other way. Raiders can only piss off whatever chance they have left with Russell by naming an aged QB as the starter for what, maybe 1 or 2 years. Give Russell the shot with the early schedule advantage hopefully helping him build confidence. If that fails, pull the plug on the entire project and start over with another rookie next year.

Orton was named the starter months ago.
August 7th, 2009 at 11:53 am
I was reading somewhere yesterday that a lot of Broncos fans showed up and booed Orton at the first practice. Long year coming up in Denver.

Sounds like Clemens is going to lose. He has been throwing way too many picks. Sanchez has operated the second team offense against the 1st team d with fewer problems.

You know who’s not fighting for his job? Eli Manning.
/ducks

Really? How about Al Davis being the owner? He will see Russell throw the ball 70 yards, look at how much he pays him and once 5 words come out of Gey-Jeff’s mouth he will choose Russell.

Tavaris Jackson is absolutely going to be the starter. I don’t think he should be, but Childress is going to give Jackson the job.

I also think Russell has to start. I think you can pull the plug on him, if he stinks, but not before the bye week. Garcia is what you do when you’re trying to salvage 6-10, so you don’t have to pay your next QB project 35 million guaranteed $$$.

Jets’ first loss in Houston
fixed

Freeman would get eaten alive, thats a guy that needs to sit for a year or two. I’m no Jamarcus fan, but you have to give him the chance, there’s no playoffs for the Raiders this year, may as well see what you’ve got.

Did not think PSU would be #8 – I was expecting mid teens.
Damn – have to leave for the rest of the day (site visit). Would love to talk NFL/CFB the rest of the day.
August 7th, 2009 at 11:59 am
Jets: Sanchez – good team, won’t ask for a lot
Niners: Hill
Browns: Quinn – time to make the job your own
Lions: Culpepper – if Stafford starts he could get Carr’d quickly
Vikings: Jackson – unless he sucks in camp
Raiders: Garcia – they can make noise in that division now
Broncos: Orton – but no one should be happy
Bucs: Leftwich or McCown – the leap for Freeman may be too much right now

Tavaris Jackson is absolutely going to be the starter. I don’t think he should be, but Childress is going to give Jackson the job.
Fetch are you on crack? What the fuck are you talking about? Sage is going to be the QB hands down.

who in the world thinks that T-Jack is going to win a competition where the criteria are quarterbacking skills? Only an idiot..oh, wait, Brad Childress is judging? Never mind.

Hall of Fame Game Sunday!
Bills and who else?

Agree with this. Rosenfels throws way, way too many picks, but he’s a lot better QB than Jackson. Only thing Jackson does better and run (and, uh, not get ‘Coptered when he does).
August 7th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
oh, how this pains me, because it is true.
sucking like he did most of last season should be reason enough not to start him.

I am of the opinion that a qb should sit out his entire first year. I think too many qb’s are ruined when thrown into the mix too early.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
I cannot believe the Browns didn’t pull off a trade for DA yet, he’s no Montana but Orton & T-Jack have jobs?
From what I’ve seen in camp Quinn is check-down charlie though …
August 7th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
reminds me of david carr his last year in houston. 70% completion rate but still a shitty qb
August 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
He throws a really mean 5yd out TexansFan.
//shades of Tim Couch.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
pkiguy: dirtheavy makes my point for me.
I don’t think Sage would be too bad. Just give it to Peterson and Percy
August 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
He threw 2 picks and a few bad passes. He deserved it.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
included playing the Biker in the training camp rendition of YMCA. he simply sizzles.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Very long…
August 7th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
No matter who it is the play calling will be the same: just hand it off and get out of the way.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
These camp battles are no brainers.
You don’t start a rookie QB cause they are not gonna take you to the superbowl anyhow. Slowly work them into the rotation. So that means Leftwich, Culpepper, and Clemens start the season.
You play Russell over Garcia. News flash: the raiders are not making the playoffs let alone winning the superbowl with Garcia starting. So you play the QB you drafted to be your franchise.
Quinn starts over DA. Jackson starts over Rosenfels. Orton over Simms.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Part of me hopes that the Vikings just have a terrible season which would mean Childress would be fired. On the other hand, aside from the QB position, this team is at it’s peak right now and is poised to do some damage. It’s a shame this guy has the keys to the machine.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Frozenfels, T-Jack, Orton, McCown possibly starting …
And Brian Griese picked this year to retire??
August 7th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
No Triston, it’s just because Broncos fans suck compared to Bears fans. Good to see Cutler still knows how to act/look like a dickwad.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Let the Kellen Clemons era begin
August 7th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
JaMarcus Russell almost HAS to start for the Raiders this year or they are wasting their time with him.
Tavaris Jackson will never be any better than he is right now. And right now, he is pretty terrible. The Vikings have to go to Rosenfels to have any shot in the playoffs.
Also: There is nothing to be gained by starting Matt Stafford on Day 1. Let Culpepper get his ass kicked in the beginning of the year before handing the reins over to Stafford.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
Seconded, shit or get off the pot and throw the forty million or whatever you paid him and flush.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Brady Quinn will be a Pro-Bowler within the next three years.
