Cry Us a River
Uncategorized February 24th. 2007, 5:12pmA flurry of emails popped into our mailbox shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, and it was in regards to the above video. Seems our favorite show on ESPN, PTI, elected to dedicate a minute in the mailbag segment to a baseball player’s quest for some early-morning, discreet, Spring Training action (no mention of the Cincinnati Reds or Ryan Freel, who our tipster claims was the beaver hunter). All’s fair in love and the internet, but damn, fellas, couldn’t you have thrown any love our way for unearthing the gem? After all, you haven’t arrived on the pop culture scene until you’ve been mentioned on PTI.
Crazy, silly, solid props to Leave the Man Alone for loading up the video.

PTI is thieving you, TBL. You should be equal parts honored and upset.

A truly disappointing decision by the PTI production team (I really doubt TK caught the story on his RSS).

Craig’s List is the bizness when it comes to hooking up and just getting together with so-and-so for a little one-on-one. What is wrong with that? Play safe and PARTY. There is nothing wrong with Craig’s List. NOTHING. I know so many Chelsea Pier queens who’ve found their HUSBANDS on Craig’s List. Crai’gs List is one of the biggest sites on the net. I’ve found furniture and odds-n-ends on there, JUST AS MILLIONS OF OHTERS HAVE.
Stop hatin on Craig’s List!
I first saw this story on Big Lead and there are about 950 blogs that link from mine (I am NOT sports-related but still…) and did a search on Technorati.com. NONE of them reported this story…

Nobody was ripping Craigslist. It was just a funny ass story.

ESPN doesn’t believe in crediting bloggers for their work. Sal Paolantonio quoted Big Daddy Drew verbatim on Countdown this season, but gave him no love. Rat bastards.

Um, how do you know they got it from you?! This whole “credit me” stuff sounds silly. And oh, you didn’t unearth it either, someone did it for you, so how do you know that this guy didn’t give it to someone at espn either? Or that he wasn’t the only guy that spotted it? It was on friggin’ craig’s list, so isn’t it public domain anyways? You can’t really “break” a story when its on a free and open website anyways.
Quit Crying, you just want retribution

Valid points, Justin.
Majorly nerdy of us … but we asked the person who sent us the tip, and they didn’t say the send it to PTI. But Stat boy does probably prowl the Sarasota wanted ads, looking for action before PTI tapes … we kid … like a guy making 900k a year has to do that …

I absolutely think what PTI is despicable and I say this with the utmost respect, because I love the site, but what are the chances you think that craigslist ad is real? 2%?

I agree–nobody should borrow creative material without citing the source!
Could you please direct me to the photo credits for any of the pictures you cut and paste?

I’ll jump in here . . . I was the person who sent the craigslist ad to The Big Lead. I’d rather not go into how it is that my ex-girlfriend found it and sent it to me (because I’m trying not to think of her browsing in casual encounters) but after getting this text from her, I sent it to TBL and no one else. I’m not going to suggest that I was the only one who saw the ad but the ad itself had been posted on 2/17 so it seems like a HUGE coincidence that I would forward it to TBL on 2/21, they would post it on 2/22 and then it would run on PTI which was probably recorded 4 hours after the post.
As for if the ad is real, I have my doubts. One the one hand, it’s just creepy enough to be legit. On the other, if it’s a clubhouse prank, it was a fabulous one.
So to recap, to my knowledge, there was no reporting of this craigslist ad anywhere – TV, Internet/Blog, radio – prior to the TBL post on Friday and the information from that post came directly from me.
While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I think it’s sad that some of you are doubting TBL here. Seems to me that this site goes out of its way to give credit where credit is due and specific to this post, offered to credit me any way I chose. Not to mention the fact that in the face of doubters, my identify as the source was never revealed. This kind of journalistic integrity is missing these days. Embrace it people.

Looks like they did show you some love. During the errors segment Reali had a sign next to him that said, “Thanks to our friends at thebiglead.com” or something like that.
Congrats!
