Yardwork: Unassisted Triple Play and The Return of Smoltz
Baseball, Video August 24th. 2009, 10:30am
Phils 9, Mets 7: The first inning of this game featured Ollie Perez surrendering two three-run bombs to Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth before getting the embarrassing hook after throwing three straight balls to the dangerous Pedro Martinez. The game ended on an Eric Bruntlett unassisted tripe play. Only the Mets, only the Mets. Unfortunately, we left about 43 seconds before this happened. Gary Cohen could not believe the runners were going. His call is after the jump.
Cards 5, Padres 2: John Smoltz struck out nine over five scoreless innings, further proving that pitching in the NL is really easy. Pujols hit his 40th. Also, is Smoltz auditioning for something here?
Rockies 4, Giants 2: The Rockies got to Tim Linceum with runs in the sixth and seventh, and Ubaldo Jiménez settled down for the win after giving up an early two-run shot to Renteria. Colorado leads the wildcard by three games. Still in utter shock that there are three teams over .500 in the NL West.
Rangers 4, Rays 0: Scott Feldman gave up just three hits and struck out 11 in seven innings of work. He’s now 13-4 and just yesterday I was saying how Texas has no pitching. David Price certainly pitched well enough to win, but he was much more fun as a reliever, just like Joba.
Braves 7, Marlins 5: Brian McCann had a three-run homer in the first inning on his way to a 5 RBI afternoon. Both Lowe and Nolasco were shaky, but Atlanta’s relieving trio of Kris Medlen, Peter Moylan and Rafael Soriano threw four scoreless innings. Where’s Wes Helms when you need him?
Twins 10, Royals 3: Carl Pavano got his 11th win. It’s kind of amazing that he’s pretty much made it through a full season. To sum things up for the Royals, Bruce Chen is one of their relievers.
Those Amazin’ Mets:

Carl Pavano. I never thought Id say this but: Nice trade Bill Smith.

Everytime you deny this (even to yourself) it makes Baby Jesus cry for dying for someone so willfully ignorant.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:38 am
not really disagreeing, but it also helped that he was pitching against the padres in san diego.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:38 am
Holy crap, the NL is a flaming pile of dog poo.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:38 am
Twins are 4.5 games out. In any other division, this team would have been a seller by mid June.

John Smoltz struck out nine over five scoreless innings
I happened to catch him on Dan Patrick this AM and he said the Cards noticed he was tipping his pitches when he was throwing in the bullpen. Something w/ his glove position for each type of pitch.
I think I’d fire the Red Sox pitching coach this morning
August 24th, 2009 at 10:41 am
Smoltz is my favorite player of all time, but I’m not doing back flips now that he’s “back.” The Padres suck.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Every time the Cardinals acquire a pitcher who has been shitty Dave Duncan “discovers” he’s been tipping his pitches. Either every pitcher in the majors is tipping their pitches and the Cardinals know it or this is some type of mental boost they like to do: “It wasn’t you that sucked John, it was just that your were tipping your pitches.”
August 24th, 2009 at 10:44 am
and you guys left early from the game?
August 24th, 2009 at 10:45 am
for you Mets fans this morning from an article in this morning’s paper:
The Mets come to South Florida on Tuesday and provide a good foil to the Marlins’ story. The Mets are sunk this year despite a $149 million payroll, while the Marlins are still in it with their baseball-lowest $36.8 million payroll.
Yes, the Mets are struck hard by injuries. So let’s expand the view. In the eight years under owner Jeffrey Loria, the Marlins have spent roughly $600 million less on players than the Mets ($901 million to $293 million) and won slightly more games (634 to 626). They also won a World Series.
ouch, babe

AL postseason is set
NYY vs. Detroit
Boston vs. Anaheim
NL postseason best guess:
Dodgers vs. Cards
phillies vs. rockies (rematch from 2-3 yrs ago?)
August 24th, 2009 at 11:00 am
This directly contradicts TBL’s theory on payroll and winning.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:02 am
Rangers are only a game behind the Sawx for the WC
August 24th, 2009 at 11:02 am
His formula neglects the existence of Steve Phillips.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:06 am
He drafted David Wright!
August 24th, 2009 at 11:07 am
TBL even if today were September 24th, the AL postseason would not be set.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:07 am
TBL,
The AL Central is so bad, that even the Twins have a shot at winning it. Plus, as mentioned above, the Rangers have a shot at taking the WC and Boston would be out in the cold.

I thought the last 38 GAMES counted?
August 24th, 2009 at 11:08 am
The White Sox are still the best team in the Central, even though it pains me to say.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:11 am
by the way, Smoltz had tons of swinging strikes and great command last night. That has nothing to do with Petco. With the offense he was facing yes, but not with the park.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:12 am
The White Sox are fucking gay.
O/T: Real or fake?

what’s my theory on payroll and winning? i have stated many times there is no direct, 100% correlation. but clearly, the more money you spend, the better your chances of making the postseason.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:12 am
Does this mean the Mets have won the NL East the past 2 years?
August 24th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Don’t be surprised if the Braves win the NL wild card.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:14 am
AL postseason is set
Is it possible to be a troll on your own site?
August 24th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Yanks have won the AL East.
Boston is very, very likely going to get that wildcard, barring Beckett going down or something crazy.
Anaheim has the AL West.
The only question is the Central, and i think detroit’s superior to chicago, and will pull it off.
would you have preferred ‘virtually set?’
August 24th, 2009 at 11:17 am
are you asking the same question about vinatieri’s ability to kick a satellite out of space?
August 24th, 2009 at 11:18 am
Fuck philly. Why can’t they lose a game?
This Smoltz hate is astounding… you guys are talking about a living legend.
Fantastic.

Have you been watching the same Boston team I have? Texas can easily go on a tear and win the WC.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:21 am
based on past trends, we can expect a detroit boston ALCS being that NYY can’t make it into the second round if they were spotted two games in the ALDS and Anaheim shits the bed against the sox in the postseason.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:22 am
It’s your stumping for a salary cap more than anything.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:22 am
he sucked horribly for one team got released signs with a another team and looks pretty fucking good. there is bound to be a smidgen of hate for the guy. even if he is a “living legend”
August 24th, 2009 at 11:22 am
I think Boston fans have a reason be pissed off at the guy.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:24 am
Are you effin kidding me? Why in the phuck would you have been leaving early?
We must be watching two different RedSox teams.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Also if the Sox sign Billy Wagner they are all but giving Texas the Wild Card.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:29 am
Oh, and after watching the Yankees vs Sawx game last night, I realized A-Rod sucks at defense along with Jeter. Who doesn’t cover 3rd base when you play 3rd base and the ball is in left field?!
August 24th, 2009 at 11:31 am
Boston 16 Games against teams with record above .500 rest of season.
Texas: 12 Games against teams with record above .500 rest of season.
Those 4 games could be a huge difference.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:31 am
Did you see who was selected as 3rd baseman for the Sunday Night Baseball 20 year Anniversary Team? Larry Wayne Jones, Jr.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:32 am
Your theories intrigue me.
By the by, is there going to be a post about TBL, Inc. Family Picnic ‘09?
August 24th, 2009 at 11:37 am
Did Paolo set this up?

They called it the SuperAndy Memorial

What odds would you lay for Boston to win the WC, and are you interested in action?
August 24th, 2009 at 11:47 am
I still think Tampa can steal that wildcard. They get Boston 6 more times and Texas 3 more times.
As for the Mets. Jesus. Running on a 2-2 count with a guy (Franceour) that swings at everything. That had disaster written all over it. I don’t think it cost them the game though because Bruntlett was standing right there and wasn’t running to cover the bag so he would have caught it anyway and they probably double up Castillo with how hard it was hit.
Either way it was embarrassing. Great Oliver Perez signing! He only has 24 million left on his contract! yippee!
By the way regarding the Met payroll. They’ve had Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, Maine, Billy Wagner and JJ Putz out for most of the year. Take those guys out of their payroll and they’re behind the Royals! Sometimes you have to look an the entire picture.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:48 am
Be VERY, VERY surprised if the Braves win the NL Wildcard. The best pitching staff in the NL is going to win that.
The Rangers also have a better chance at winning the AL Wildcard since they play the A’s 9 more times. The rest of their schedule has 5 total series against winning teams.
TBL is right about Detroit though. The White Sox start an 11 game road trip against BOS, NYY and MIN this week. Unless they come back 6-5 or better, there is a 0% chance they win the Central.

The Cubs didn’t get swept! Yaaaaayyyyyy
August 24th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
that = Braves
August 24th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
JPQ- I saw that. My only beef with that is that the last 3 years before this debacle the Mets are 274-212. The Marlins are 233-253. So we can cherry pick years all we wants. the Marlins were better from 02-05 but the Mets have been much better from 06-08. Most of that due to the Mets spending money out the ass.
August 24th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Yep. Lowe, Vazquez, Jurrjens, Hanson, and Kawakami > Lincecum, and….
August 24th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Re: MLB payrolls- as some wise man once said(I think it was Gene Simmons), it’s not always how much money you spend, it’s how wisely you spend it that counts.
August 24th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
No statistical support for that argument.
I like the Braves’ staff don’t get me wrong…but they rank behind the Dodgers and Giants in pretty much every pitchibg stat, and that includes 2nd half splits as well…where they rank behind the World Champs as well.
August 24th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Ruiz, not Howard hit the 3 run bomb off of Ollie
