A Cheating Comparison: Derrick Rose and Memphis in 2008 to Corey Maggette and Duke in 1999
College Basketball, Shady McShady August 24th. 2009, 3:00pm
Just when you thought you’d never hear the name Myron Piggie again in college basketball circles, Gary Parrish of CBS Sports asks a question that will surely invite an avalanche of angry rants from Durham fanboys:
if Memphis can be penalized for playing Derrick Rose even though the NCAA initially cleared Rose and to date has never accused Memphis of playing a role in what caused Rose to be ineligible, then why wasn’t Duke penalized for playing Corey Maggette under slightly different but mostly similar circumstances?
There’s no defense for the NCAA here. None. Maybe Coach K has friends in high places.
Hopefully, at some point this summer, when ESPN’s Dick Vitale gives up hope on his Tampa Rays, he’ll address a question like this, and even tackle one about two other coaches he’s relentlessly promoting: John Calipari and Rick Pitino, each of whom has had a scandal-filled summer.
Selective enforcement? NCAA failed to admonish Duke (CBS Sports)

1. Weren’t you complaining that the NCAA didn’t actually punish Memphis at all because taking away wins is meaningless? You can be such a fucking hypocrite.
2. Taking money and having someone take the SATs for you are in no way the same or ‘mostly similar’.

Have to agree with Mole here. How is Magette getting money from a booster the same as someone taking a test that qualifies you for college for you?
I actually think the SAT thing is worse only because everyone is getting money anyways.
August 24th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Please explain. Don’t they both invalidate amateur status and thus, eligibility?
August 24th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Duke should have been penalized for the Maggette incident. And of course Vitale, ESPN and others will never publicly comment on it.
However, what is a much bigger issue is that Calipari walked away from the Memphis situation and can coach Kentucky this year with no penalty at all. The NCAA should also not turn a blind eye to Calipari’s association with Worldwide Wes who seems to have connections with recruits, agents, and the NBA which are dubious at best.
As much as I cannot stand Duke they are for the most part (aside from Maggette) a clean program. I don’t know if the same can be said for Calipari.

Memphis knew about Rose having a test score invalidated.

So is it ok then, j.sears, to get a recruits parent or relative a job with an alumni in order to get the recruit to come to your school?

Memphis knew about Rose having a test score invalidated
they did?
August 24th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
I’m gonna go ahead and continue not caring until something meaningful is done about the USC/Reggie Bush scenario.
August 24th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
USC will not be charged with anything, lefty, so I guess you’ll have a while to yourself ha.
DA NEW AMERIKAS PROGRAMMM!
August 24th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
yes, as did calipari, as did rose. regardless of what any of them claim.
August 24th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Pretty sure, or they knew he failed it several times before passing it, they knew something. Not to say Duke didn’t know Maggette got 2000 bucks, but we don’t know that.
August 24th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
what’s up everyone…longtime no post….saw this and couldn’t resist. Who the fuck cares? THe NCAA is so broken that nobody should really give two shits about what penalties are handed out. Someone over at Foxsports.com tackled this topic: http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/9963158/NCAA-vacates-all-reason-with-Memphis-ruling
The NCAA thinks that vacating wins is actually going to fix something, when really, it’s jsut a pussy way out. We all remember the games, the video still exists…players are still playing. So they didn’t really accomplish anything. When the NCAA decides to get fixed I might decide to care about what rules are broken. Until then, if you ain’t cheatin’ you ain’t tryin’.
August 24th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
yes, as did calipari, as did rose. regardless of what any of them claim
thanks Mole

As long as Derrick Rose sees no penalty on the Chicago Bulls I do not mind.

Okay, I’ll be the one Duke fan to take the bait.

Sampson’s trouble and penalties followed him to IU from Oklahoma, why can’t they do that to Calipari? Because he didn’t make too many phone calls instead of likely knowing about a fraudulent SAT score? The NCAA is a joke and Miles Brand sucks dick for coke.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Because no one made an allegation against Calipari, the NCAA didn’t look into him. At least thats what the NCAA is claming. Also, since there isn’t an obvious direct link between Calipari and the guy who took the test it would require some work. The NCAA obviously isn’t interested in real punishments.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
The NCAA is saying that because no allegation was made against Calapari that they didn’t look at him. Total BS. If they are only going to investigate half assed, they should just throw the fucking rule book out.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
welcome, dick.

August 24th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
agree with you 100 percent diesel.
By the way, Seth Davis said the ncaa is looking into world wide wes and the test, also looking into John Wall. Only a matter of time before UK gets what is coming to them.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Shatners ghost that is certainly not ok and very dirty. But I am not sure what incident or which program you are refering to?
August 24th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
but does Calipari?
August 24th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Probably not he has mastered staying at least 2 to 3 people away from a violation so he can deny anything.
As an Indiana fan Kentucky getting busted will be enough for me, but a show clause for calipari would be icing on the cake.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
The comparison is bs, because at worst Maggette would’ve been forced to sit out games in the next season, a la JaRon and Kareem Rush (who got 17k, opposed to the 2k Maggette got). It’s also telling that Doyle conveniently forgot to add the disclaimer that he has a public axe to grind against Duke that he normally does whenever he writes something about Duke.
But hey, go ahead and pile on Duke, because everyone knows that they’re dirty. I mean, Coach K gets the best non athletic white boys money can buy, amirite?

is it odd that i was thinking of moleman, tallguy, and the other guy who HATES ME for the scheyer post (2 years later) while crafting this post?
and yes, i received your emails about this, duke fans.
i will post your links.
August 24th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
I assume the other is Coack K, and not really odd considering we’re the 3 main Duke supporters in the commenting ranks.
And I still can’t believe you actually believed that Scheyer is a D3 talent. I mean, you can call a guy overrated, whatever, but when a guy is offered by Duke, Illinois, and Arizona, and logs regular minutes on a top 20 team, your assertion was just plain silly. Not to be an ass, but Coach K and Bruce Weber make their money by evaluating high school basketball players; you don’t.
August 24th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
j.sears I was talking about what Duke did to Randolph in order for him to join the team.
