Mysteries: What Did Byron Hout Say to LeGarrette Blount Before Getting Punched?
College Football, Race September 9th. 2009, 9:15amThe Oregonian is on a quest to get to the bottom of what Boise State’s Byron Hout said to Oregon’s LeGarette Blount last week prior to getting knocked out. There are two popular rumors circulating, and Boise State hasn’t come forward to deny either of them.
The most circulated and not denied by those inside the Boise State program is that Hout asked Blount how his dead family member was doing. The one he buried just a few weeks ago … The second rumor not denied by Boise State’s program is that Hout dropped the N bomb. Did he? I don’t know. They won’t say because Hout doesn’t have to be accountable for his actions.
Zidane’s headbutt all over again? Unless Hout gets paid by some talk show to tell the truth, we might never find out what he said. We imagine SI, ESPN, and a host of other media outlets have dispatched reporters to Eugene in an effort to land the first story with Blount, the suspended senior … but what about Hout, the guy who triggered the punch?
Boise State has decided not to suspend Hout. Fine. But is nobody going to force the issue to find out what was said? Will perceptions of Blount change if one of the two rumors from above are confirmed? His chances of getting drafted in the NFL next year could hinge on it.
Blount? Good for Oregon. But what about Hout? (Oregonian)

He was probably a fourth rounder before this incident. Now? Late-round flier, I’m guessing.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:20 am
lets get this quote Hout in the open.
/rimshot
//be here all week
///try the fish
September 9th, 2009 at 9:24 am
It doesn’t matter what he said, he’s not the one that threw the punch. You’re taught throughout your entire athletic career that it’s not the instigator that gets caught, but always the retaliator. Sad, but true.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:24 am
sanders, where do you see 4th rounder?
here he’s listed as 2-3rd
http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=81967&draftyear=2010&genpos=RB
if the preseason hype was warranted, what if he went for 1400 yards? could he have been a 2nd rounder?
September 9th, 2009 at 9:24 am
I think he called him as Islamic terrorist…or maybe it was about Mom. I don’t remember

September 9th, 2009 at 9:25 am
Well, no matter what was said, Blount is going to have to learn to lock it down emotionally. If he can be shown to be rattled over whatever it is that Hout said, he can be guaranteed to hear 20x worse at the Pro level.
That said, I want to know what Hout said. It won’t excuse what Blount did, but it would at least allow folks to put the incident into some sort of perspective.
If either of the two proposed theories are correct, I think some of Hout’s teammates ought to line up to take shots at Hout at practice.

The Retaliator
Michael Bay movie, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, with a 150 million CGI budget. TBL heard is was gonna be awesome.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:29 am
No to call out the link but there is NO quote from anyone of substance in that ‘reporting’ (somehow I do not think his father-in-law has any inside information). Why not ask Blount what was said or ask Hout or coaches or one of the 10 players in the area?
September 9th, 2009 at 9:30 am
He’s somewhere between the 15th and 2oth best RB that will be coming out this year. You really think 15 RB’s are going to be drafted in the first two rounds?
September 9th, 2009 at 9:30 am
It says here that he could go 1st Round in 2010
September 9th, 2009 at 9:30 am
No lie… got me really excited… does it involve flaming objects out of the sky destroying stuff?
September 9th, 2009 at 9:31 am
McShay had him listed as the #2 RB and #56 player overall I believe.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:34 am
I heard he whispered that Kobe > Lebron.
/too soon?
September 9th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Yikes. Diller, Dwyer, McKnight, Best, Royster, prolly both the OU guys, most likely Devine after Slaton’s rookie success, Scott from LSU would all be ranked ahead of him I’d imagine.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Why does everyone want Hout to get in trouble for this? Very simply, if Blount hadn’t jacked him up, this would NEVER be something that people would be screaming for him to get suspended over (unless one of the two comments above are true).
Why should the guy get reprimanded because Blount made it a national scene? Smack talking happens all the time…
September 9th, 2009 at 9:36 am
Considering this isn’t his first incident, and he ran his mouth before the game, no. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that Hout said something in regards to Blount’s trash talk in the weeks leading up to the game. If it were either of the two theories posited above, Blount or Oregon (or a mouthpiece for either, most likely) would’ve said something by now.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:36 am
Hout told him he looked gay in that white uni with the little flower petals on the shoulders
/NTTAWWT
September 9th, 2009 at 9:38 am
You pop off about one of my family members that I just buried… you’re gonna get punched. I think all of us here would do the same.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:38 am
I can’t imagine a white guy playing college football with at least 50 black teammates would be stupid enough to drop an N-Bomb loud enough for another guy to hear. At least I fucking hope not.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:38 am
I know Dwyer’s a junior, what about the rest of the guys? Maybe Blount was the #2 senior?
September 9th, 2009 at 9:40 am
I can’t decide which of those theories is worse, of course I’m white so WTF would I know about it.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:42 am
Whatever it was he sure thought it was amusing, although the reaction from the coach looked to me like he crossed the line.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:42 am
I really don;t care for this story. Except for Hout’s douchey smile right before getting dropped. This pic someone linked makes me laugh every time.

September 9th, 2009 at 9:44 am
i think boise states head coach’s reaction, who was standing right there, says a lot. he didn’t even looked suprised that hout got punched in the face and before he got punched he was looking at hout like what the fuck is wrong with you. so maybe he really did say something as crazy as the two options above
September 9th, 2009 at 9:47 am

September 9th, 2009 at 9:48 am
So because Boise State doesn’t deny a rumor then it must be true? That’s beyond weak. And if Hout dropped the N word on Blount, I’d expect Blount would have done more than just sucker punch him and run away like a pussy.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:50 am
I thought his name was Toby.
/Hout’d?
September 9th, 2009 at 9:51 am
Being that Blount did neither, it must mean that Hout must have.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:51 am
I think the racial slur is off the board considering number 41(marshall, black), hout’s teammate, is next to him when he said what he said. Dirt hinted at it earlier, if he dropped the bomb, with a black teammate nearby, he’s nuts. Or a huge Blazing Saddles fan.
And wouldn’t Oregon make a huge deal of the racial slur? Alienating Hout on his own team?
September 9th, 2009 at 9:52 am
Regardless of what he said, you just have to walk away. As for Hout, if you are going to drop N-Bombs or dead family jokes do it with your helmet on.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:53 am

I think leaders like Hannity, Limbaugh and nameless emails would be all over Eugene attacking that Blount the animal and defending Hout’s right to free speech.

Why doesn’t someone ask Blount? Hout punished though he started the fire.

I think leaders like Hannity, Limbaugh and nameless emails would be all over Eugene attacking that Blount the animal and defending Hout’s right to free speech.
I think that if I was Blount/Hoyt I’d keep any racial issues to ourselves so we wouldn’t have to be simplified and caricaturized by the liberal/conservative media sects as Lefy and Darrell have helpfully demonstrated.

If you have a theory state it but stop trying to make Blount into some innocent victim. No matter what was said he could have walked away and been 1000% more respected. What Hout did was wrong and what Blount did was wrong.

September 9th, 2009 at 10:14 am

September 9th, 2009 at 10:15 am
I still can’t believe all the people that want hout’s suspended, so lets say we do that, now is that precedent to suspend every player that talks shit during a game, because you won’t be able to field a team after one game. Although BYU might become national champs then.

Ugh. Not completely, but you do a very nice job of distilling thoughts and sentiments down to the point that they’re not relevant. My point is that if he had said something racial, the story would’ve broken already. The Al Sharpton thing was hyperbole (I took spencer’s class, too). So, there is my opinion, clearly laid out.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:24 am
They do both beleive things that are patently uncorrect, Al Quaida… well, choose one, and Notre Dame that it’s still a relevant college football program.

When’s the last time anyone defended someone using the n-word? Granted I don’t watch any of the people you referenced, but surly I would’ve heard the shitstorm that comments like that would’ve caused.
Sharpton on the other hand, would’ve been there if the guy used the slur, period. So either he made a joke about the dead family member (unlikely) or he just asked Blount how his balls tasted.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:25 am
So, the proof of whether Hout said anything is Al Sharpton’s reaction? Logical.
Darrell: It took you six minutes to join this conversation when you saw the name Al Sharpton. It’s better than 50/50 that the same time limit expires for Sharpton to react if a white person drops an n-bomb anywhere in the US
September 9th, 2009 at 10:26 am
In their defense Colt Brennan was on that team though.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:26 am
You should know that I didn’t necessarily root for OSU against ND a few years ago, but I wanted them to win. Take solice.

September 9th, 2009 at 10:27 am
no he wasn’t.
and i was talking about ND, not Georgia (because georgia also applies).
September 9th, 2009 at 10:28 am
fine…if we’re playing nice today, i actively rooted for michigan to beat florida and tebow in the capital one bowl two years ago. yes, rooted.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:29 am
The only reason Hawaii even got into a bowl game last year was because it has a bowl named after it. We could’ve rounded up 30 TBL commenters and beat that abomination of a team.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Blount was not an innocent victim; but there is a thing called mitigating circumstances and that didn’t come into play. The facts are Blount was walking off of the field on his way to the locker room, minding his own business when Hout (a)invaded Blount’s personal space and (b) said something provactive. Should Blount have capped Hout in the jaw? Nope. Should Hout have gotten in Blount’s face and said whatever he said? Nope. Yet Blount bears all of the bad publicity and reprecussions from this. Should Blount have gone after the fan in the stands? Nope. Should the fans be allowed to say whatever they want just because they spend their money? Nope. That’s the gist of the problem right there; people talk tough and provactively, and then turn int pacifists as soon as you step to them.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Oh shit forgot about that.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:30 am
September 9th, 2009 at 10:31 am

September 9th, 2009 at 10:43 am
If Blount rushed for 300 hudred yards but O still lost does it happen?
There are hundreds of scenarios in which nothing happens. Blount can control his own actions. he did not.
Nice response but two things. He punches his own teammate when he could have been walking off the field if it was just a sput of the moment thing. It is ironic that you calling the football players pacifists. I think the gist is that they could play the game to decide who wins and loses and punching is not part of the game. If not like Blount took off his own helmet and challenged him to a fight. He cold cocked him.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:43 am
fine, just don’t come crawling back here when both get hurt later because they’re not equipped to take a beating from actual, legitimate college football defenses.
and i think i saw my old grade school team that i used to coach running a more advanced version of rich rod’s offense. i mean, if it can beat catholic grade school teams in ohio 3 times out of 9 games, it certainly can beat college football teams, right? right?
September 9th, 2009 at 10:43 am
How was this a sucker punch? A sucker punch is when you hit someone who’s not expecting it. If Hout didn’t expect a reaction why the fuck did he come over to trash talk in the first place? Head on a swivel son, especially if you are running your mouth.

I think I’ve decided that my least favorite part of this whole saga is that people keep saying “he got knocked the F out! lolol”.
No. He dropped down almost to the ground for all of half a second, never looking unconscious, and popped up immediately afterward. That’s not getting knocked out, it’s called half-falling down when someone sucker punches you in the jaw.
I’m just an advocate for accurate reporting.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:49 am

September 9th, 2009 at 10:52 am

September 9th, 2009 at 10:53 am
ND is already defeated…at life.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Maybe the big east isn’t college footbal, but West Virginia was one game away from a national championship game and ranked #3 in the country if I remember correctly. Also, they steamrolled the Big 12 champ in the bowl game, so yes, I would consider that college football.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:55 am
No. He dropped down almost to the ground for all of half a second, never looking unconscious, and popped up immediately afterward
Jonesing must be Hout’s mom. That kid got knocked the fuck out. For the rest of his life, he’ll see that video, and he’ll know he got knocked the fuck out. If that coach hadn’t been there to help him and his glass jaw up, he would have stayed down.

There’s a difference between what you do at work/in an official capacity (as Blount was) and what you do in a bar/at a party/ in the street, both in the consequences of violence and the controls to stop that violence from escalating. I don’t disagree that Hoyt “deserved” what he got, but at the same time Blount deserves the consequences of his actions, which rightfully should be severe.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Huh? What? I can’t hear you… Michigan sucks.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:56 am
All of this trash talk has got me hungry.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:57 am
Did Charlie sit in your head?
September 9th, 2009 at 10:57 am
not to take all the air out of WVU’s “big bowl wins,” but a non-BCS NC game was a MUCH bigger deal to WVU than it was to the sleepwalking Georgia team they faced. because we all know rich rod wasn’t coaching against Oklahoma.
and the only reason they were in the NC picture? well, when you face such a boisterous conference slate like…um…cincinnati and…uh…rutgers, it’s not exactly hard to roll up a gaudy record.
but hey, at least michigan added another play to their two play playbook from last year! instead of bubble screen and zone read, they now have a downfield passing play! yay progress!
September 9th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Oh, no doubt. Still very awesome. Just not a KO.
Yup. After any football game, if a guy tapped my shoulder pads and yelled something unintelligible, then turned to talk to his coach, I knew he was a threat to fight me. That’s why I would punch them in the face and then retreat, then punch a few of my teammates, then go after some fans, then act like a subhuman monster from a fantasy movie for the next 5 minutes. That shit happens all the time. Let him play! Let him play!
September 9th, 2009 at 11:00 am
I know, exciting isn’t it.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:02 am
/accuracy
September 9th, 2009 at 11:02 am
very.
it took tressel until year 4 to get his third play installed. well, fourth play if you count “punt.”
September 9th, 2009 at 11:03 am
Dont let him play but dont let the other guy go unpunished. Problem with this is that the NCAA has not gotten involved. They left it up to the schools. Oregon did what they are supposed to do. Boise St. youre on the clock.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:03 am
If Football people are in each others faces for literally hours at a time. NO ONE expects punches to be thrown. There are specific rules preventing this in fact. Blount was not protecting a robber from entering his house and in no way does it seemed his life or anything else (besides maybe his ego) is being threatened. I understand sometimes tempers flair, and athletics, especially football, condone this but your need to be under control.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:05 am
We should have just asked Jonesing what was said on the field since he was there.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:05 am
I was being sarcastic, man. Anything less than the full season would’ve been a joke. I can maybe understand popping Hout for a game or two, since this was supposed to be the year they stress “sportsmanship” and he definitely didn’t show much of it.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:06 am
Ok, Im’, spent… we’ll do this again this afternoon… back to work
September 9th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Not if I take the high road.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:11 am
I was assuming it was unintelligible since it was said (1) by a defensive lineman and (2) right after a big football game. Of course, I’ve only presumed to know what was said on the field, while you apparently know what was going through both of the players’ minds. So I guess you’ve got me beat there.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:16 am
This had probably been said on here once before but,
I was surprised when Blount popped Hout in the mouth, but I was actually more surprised when Hout’s teammates just kinda watched him get decked and then watched Blount back away.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:19 am
So why are you referring to it as a sucker punch?
September 9th, 2009 at 11:19 am
so hout should be punished because blount’s feelings were hurt? or because the damage done to blounts shoulderpads because of the tap they received from hout? fucking please blount was in the wrong BIG TIME. if an NCAA football player got suspended for what hout did every time then there would about 2 players to each football team. that shit happens during the game all the time.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:20 am
because it was.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:20 am
fail
September 9th, 2009 at 11:22 am
you apparently know what was going through both of the players’ minds. So I guess you’ve got me beat there.
Jonesing: I’m not sure, but I think it was some socio-economic thing that caused it
September 9th, 2009 at 11:23 am
this would have never happened if we had free healthcare.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:26 am
failer
Shit, that was easy.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:27 am
I guess because I watched a video where a guy turns and talks to someone else, then gets hit in the face by someone off to the side.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:37 am
Hout should have gone out and bought some duct tape. Everyone knows duct tape is the best defense against the type of terrorist attack Blount inflicted on poor Hout.
September 9th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Good one, Abraham Linking.
September 9th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
And if you watched the video you would see that Blount threw the punch immediately. That’s Hout’s fault for turning away (well probably his coaches fault). Head on a swivel if you are talking shit.
Blount got what he deserved, but lets not glorify the situation by acting like Hout was innocent in this. He talked shit, turned away and got dropped. Hout was the one who engaged first.
September 9th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
I’m not sure how true that is. Georgia had just come off thrashing LSU in the SEC title game and was playing in their back yard. That game meant something to Georgia and they got spanked for about 45 minutes. The only thing I’ll say is that the Big East gets very favorable bowl game matchups. They top end squads in the Big East get to face teams 4, 5, and 6 in other conferences so of course their record will be better.
I’m a Big East supporter but by god does that conference stink this year. Way to show up Rutgers. Its hard to defend that conference any more with Boise State, BYU, and Utah putting up wins like they’ve had the last 3 or 4 seasons.
September 9th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
It is interesting that Hout’s coach was pulling him away… so clearly whatever he said it was enough to get the attention of everyone nearby.
If he did say something about a recently buried family member, I hope Blount gets re-instated, because I would have done the same thing. However, it seems unlikely that he wouldn’t have mentioned this by now.
