Curtis Granderson’s Blog Snatched By the 4-Letter
Uncategorized April 5th. 2007, 4:18pm
Last week, we interviewed Curtis Granderson of the Detroit Tigers. He started up what we thought was a fairly cool blog at MLB.com. A few days later, a couple of our readers wanted to check out what Granderson was up to, and next thing you know, POOF! His blog disappeared like a drink in front of Tony LaRussa.
Where does it pop up? ESPN.com, of course.
Here’s the trajectory we’re hearing: Granderson’s blog was first offered to Yahoo, which passed (talk about a brick); then MLB.com scooped it up. Guess maybe ESPN saw the interview we did with the outfielder, because within 72 hours, the .com had secured the rights to his blog. This is a good thing, for sure; it adds a non-white face to its ample blog roster. (Interesting twist - nearly all ESPN blogs are neatly tucked behind the pay-to-view insider wall, but Granderson’s will be available to the general viewing public.) And supposedly, this is just another (remember Paul Shirley’s NBA blog?) in what promises to be a long list of athlete blogs that the .com will be acquiring. Having seen the success of Gilbert’s blog at NBA.com, and Curt Schilling’s 38 Pitches, the .com supposedly will be making a push to lock up any athlete with the ability to type coherent sentences.
We’ve joked about it, but folks, we’re less than five years away from players eschewing 90 percent of press after games so that they can go home and blog about the game. You know it’ll happen - wealthy athletes charging a small fee for fans to read their musings on the 2-1 slider, the subtle art of making 14-of-14 free throws, or what it feels like to botch a snap on the game-winning field goal attempt in the playoffs. It’s bound to happen.
Any ideas as to whom ESPN should add to its blog roster? Other than the obvious ones, like Joey Porter, Candace Parker, Steve Nash and Ron Artest.
