Because It is Never Too Early For Notre Dame Coaching Speculation
College Football, Media Gossip/Musings September 14th. 2009, 4:45pm

From left to right: Skip Holtz (East Carolina), Brian Kelly (Cincinnati) and Jon Gruden (Monday Night Football).
Not pictured, which is not to be confused with “eliminated:” Urban Meyer and his paltry $500k buyout. For the record, we do not (yet) think Charlie Weis is on his way out. But the suspect play-calling in the 4th quarter in the Big House was enough to have more than a handful of restless ND alumni email us that the South Bend natives are restless. Weis has no room for error, meaning he beat Michigan State and Purdue prior to the USC game.
Skip Holtz: We hadn’t thought of Skip Holtz until this tweet from Pete Thamel of the NYT: “I think Lou Holtz’s insane NDame national title prediction was made to increase pressure on Weis to help Holt’s son, Skip, get the ND job.” Was he joking? Perhaps. But for a brief moment early last year, Skip Holtz was a hot name after knocking off Top 25 teams Virginia Tech and West Virginia. He signed a six-year extension last September. His buyout is a mere $100,000.
Brian Kelly: Went 10-3 in 2007 in Cincy; followed that up with an 11-3 record last year including a BCS berth. Started this season with an impressive blasting of supposedly-decent Rutgers on the road. Signed a lucrative 5-year deal in January. His buyout is odd: “… is tied to the University securing an on-campus indoor facility and practice fields in the next two years to by used by all of Cincinnati’s athletics teams.” According to a variety of reports, Tennessee and Washington were interested earlier this year.
Jon Gruden: Works on Monday Night Football. If we had to guess, he’ll be coaching in either the college ranks or the pros next year. (We wouldn’t put the mortgage on it yet because we’ve got to see what jobs become open.) The way people are beating down Lovie Smith in Chicago, you have to wonder what happens if the Bears start 1-4 and don’t rebound to make the playoffs. Is the Bears job more attractive to Gruden than the Notre Dame gig?

Gruden – OSUs OC next year, as hes groomed to become HC in 5 years.
Lou Holtz will come back for a year to compete as figurehead of the year against JoePa.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
The buyout thing is a nonissue. Also, this doesn’t seem to jive with today’s earlier post that had Notre Dame ranked way too high.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
You commentmongering son of a bitch!
September 14th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Please. I hope that’s tongue-in-cheek.
Gruden would go to the NFL before college, I’d believe.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Bring back Bob Davie!
Would be just as good as the first two on this list.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Skip Holtz is a nice guy, and pretty decent coach…but no way is he the next ND coach unless everyone else on this list and a few others turn ND down. Which, of course, is a decent possibility.
Again, he’s a pretty nice guy. Between him, Grobe, and Cutcliffe, the state of NC has 3 of the nicest coaches in college football.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
I find it hard to believe a school would get rid of the coach of a Top 15 program.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
I actually think Gruden’s schtick will work better with college kids over the long haul.
That said, Gruden never has been particularly adept at developing young talent, so I’m not sure if his actual coaching skill set would lend itself to the college game.
But that whole Chucky schtick, where he’s super intense? That’s got college written all over it.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
damn you KC, that was my comment
September 14th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
I believe that, too, but I just dont believe he want to coach in college.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Gruden is coming to the Texans next year.
/Please god
September 14th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
George O’Leary.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Jeff Garcia an Eagle now.
September 14th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
The Eagles signed Garcia? The hell?
September 14th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
@Sponge – ok…so what happens when Vick comes back? Will Garcia even be ready for next week?
September 14th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
2009 Notre Dame football is irrelevant, so let’s blow off the season and start talking about 2010 Notre Dame football!
/I hate the MSM’d
September 14th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
If Weis loses this week (please, please, please) he will be in a shit storm. We know ND will lose to USC, so right now 10-2 is the absolute best they can do. One more slip up and 9-3 puts them out of the BCS talk.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
@ Jay – it’s like that because “Lets Talk About Utah!” doesn’t put asses in the seats. I hate it too, but they have to do it.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
No idea, he knows the system, well enough anyways. My guess is this is just a quick fix.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
8 wins guarantees ND a BCS game. It’s in the contract.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Kelly has been quietly building a freaking juggernaut in Cincy… much better than his cross-town, professional rival is doing, anyway. Hell, he might have the best football team in Ohio, college or pro.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Maury has all new graphics and set. Same trashy people, though.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Something is going to die
September 14th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
John Fox is a moron.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Pretty sure that’s 9.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Ohio St. is still in Ohio, Double P.
/we love ya though.

He’s a hell of a coach and he will be at a very big school in a year or two. I think Penn State would be smart to hire him, but I’ve heard that JoePa’s successor has pretty much been chosen. If I were Colorado I’d try to get him (though I would say no if I were him).
September 14th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Shatner, if they shoved Utah down our throats, we’d care. Or maybe I’m mistaken. People asked ESPN to give us more Brett Favre stories. And people were buying Sunggies before they saw them on television.
I really believe this.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
Uk should try to take him. Although we have Joker waiting in the wings.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
I gotta think this is temporary, too.
Either that, or Reid is channeling Jon Gruden and just collecting quarterbacks.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
I don’t watch ESPN because they try to build up stories. I only watch ESPN if there’s a game on. They need something to talk about for the 18 hours of non-sporting events. That being said, their college gameday is the best sports show on TV.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:10 pm

September 14th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
So I’m guessing the Eagles have no faith in Kolb. At all.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
who knows, but what i do know is kolb is awful
September 14th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Exactly. And if 17 of those 18 hours are dedicated to Notre Dame football, then they will by default become a household name and people will think they’re important.
How many new people are going to watch Jon & Kate now that the media has force-fed them to us all summer?
/the medium is the message’d
September 14th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Puffs fans are freaking out about Hawkins, true, but he’s not going anywhere, I don’t think–not because he doesn’t deserve to, but because the AD is roped to him like a mountaineer. Hawklove just got an extension…
September 14th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
TBL just taking a huge piss over midwest college football today.
McNabb hurt, Vick chomping at the bit to play (too easy), and Kolb sucking, recipe for a philly meltdown.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
uhhhh, yeah.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
McNabb is going to play this week.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
I’m a big Gameday fan, too. It also goes without saying how one can spend a good half hour looking over Herbie or Fowler’s shoulders to read the signs.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Madison’s a lovely city, we’d be happy to have him
September 14th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
If I see this Calipari commercial for Windstream one more time I’m going to find a way to block his shot.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Kolb is horrible, but they need three QBs until Vick is reinstated or McNabb can play.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
Completely false. The ONLY guarantee that ND has is that they make a BCS poll if they finish in the top 8 in the BCS standings. They are eligible if they finish in the top 16. No other guarantees.

September 14th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
I’m still trying to figure out how an independent school gets BCS consideration as it is.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Alright Jay, I get it now. It took awhile, but I got there.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
so philly is trying to make mcnabb as uncomfortable as possible? is that the plan in philly? make donovan think he could get benched any minute so he plays well? thats what it seems like. if it works more power to them.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
We’re talking about a mass media “machine” that turned Susan Boyle into the most famous person on Earth over the span of 48 hours people…….
ESPN could make Utah relevant if they wanted to. They just choose not to.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
That should read BCS “bowl” not poll. In any event, I do recognize that ND is pretty much going to make a BCS any time they are eligible. So the reality of the matter is that if they finish in the top 16, they will get in. But it has nothing to do with wins…if a 9 win ND team is outside the top 16, they can’t go to a BCS poll, period. As for an 8 win ND team, no 4 win team has EVER been eligible as an at-large team.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
I take it you’ve seen his Paul Miller commercial, the one with King Rich Brooks?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_iUCtO0xg0
Lots and lots of cheese, although, Brooks continues to rule the known universe.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Oops, make that 4 LOSS team.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
John Fox is a moron.
Yea, but the Panthers signed…….hold, hold, wait for it…… A.J. Feeley!!
September 14th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Good Lord, I’ve never watched that before P. Still better than the Gillispie bank commercials.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
A.J. Feeley – remember when he was supposed to save the Dolphins?
September 14th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Fed isn’t even getting 50% of his first serves in, yet is still up a set and a break.
September 14th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Brian Kelly is awesome, but it’s not like Cincy was that hard to turn around. All they needed was someone to recruit the Cincy area. Dantonio started it, and Kelly is keeping it going. Cincy/Dayton/Northern Kentucky is a freaking goldmine when it comes to football recruits.
September 14th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
they dont need a big name that wants a pro job. they need a solid coach whos a tireless recruiter. kelly is the guy
