ESPN Hires Bonnie Bernstein
1-liner, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings September 15th. 2009, 1:30pmESPN: “With an eye on starting ESPNNewYork.com, ESPN last week hired Bonnie Bernstein, who most recently has done studio and sideline work for the network, to write for the site and contribute to Michael Kay’s radio show that airs on ESPN’s 1050 AM in New York.” Really? Bonnie Bernstein is supposed to anchor ESPNNewYork.com? We’d have thought ESPN would have gone after a big-time NYC columnist to stir up interest in their new venture, not a former TV sideline reporter. [SBJ]

Well, for starters, if they’re currently employed, their paper isn’t gonna let them “run” a website that will compete with their own for content. A one-off Sports Reporters or First Take appearance isn’t the same thing as spending your time working for a new “competitor” for your market’s eyeballs

though i doubt he’d go for it, this would be a brilliant move by bspn.
think about it: mushnick would pull hits far more than most other slobs they have on staff plus bspn gets to put a leash on him.
also, muchnick would have so much to write about, he’d have multiple strokes like dr. z and become a vegetable and unable to write again.
subtraction by addition.

Nope. You cant have Yankees coverage without Red Sox, Giants coverage without Cowboys, Jets coverage without Patriots, and Knicks coverage without your daily LeBron rumor.
I would be okay with “ESPN without Brett Favre and NASCAR” though. Jets fans are over Brett, right?

I don’t know what New York columnist they could have used.
Mushnick does bring in page views, when he rips ESPN and media coverage. So that’s out.
Lupica would bring too much baggage, too much expense and too much of a headache. I’m not sure how many true eyeballs he, or any other columnist would bring anyway.
Would seem to make much more sense to just pilfer beat writers who would break news.
