After a friend helped us post video of Mario Williams flying like a bat out of hell in North Carolina earlier this week (previously, the video was on YouTube, but it was quickly yanked), we wondered if the Houston Chronicle would question the Texans No. 1 draft pick about his need for speed. We even emailed a couple writers there to alert them to it, just in case they were too caught up with the demise of Brad Lidge or the Texans draft quandary.

Never heard back from anyone, but they ended up asking Williams about it anyway. He apologized.

Williams says he was not racing or driving much faster than the posted speed limit on Interstate 40.

“It was a stupid thing to do, and I apologize to the fans, the organization and my teammates for not being smart,” Williams told the Chronicle on Thursday night. “I shouldn’t have put myself in that situation, and I have definitely learned my lesson.”

In the last section of the tape, his female passenger — who operated the video camera — screams for him to slow down as the engine revs loudly. Williams said the noise is exaggerated because the two-seat sports car has a rear-mounted engine.

Likely story, Mario!

A reader directs us to yet another video of Mario that makes him even more likeable: dude knows how to Make it Rain. We kind of hammered Williams last year for not producing and generally being an all-around bust, but between his penchant for attempting to break the sound barrier in a $300,000 car and showering the hoi polloi with cash, he’s kind of growing on us.
