mark_alarieDuke basketball has not been able to lure elite recruits for the last six years. We checked the Rivals database, and the Blue Devils have only nabbed two Top 10 recruits between 2004-2009 (Josh McRoberts in 2005 and Kyle Singler in 2007). In contrast, UNC has landed five in that same time period. According to Gary Parrish at CBS Sports, Duke’s recruiting during its Final Four drought (last appearance: 2004) is even more bleak when you look at Scout’s rankings: “the program’s past five recruiting classes … have been nothing short of terrible.” Which is why the coming weeks are so crucial for Duke basketball.

The Blue Devils supposedly have the inside track on two top-tier recruits in the class of 2010: point guard Kyrie Irving and SG/SF Harrison Barnes. (Nice read on Barnes here; he’s already being pegged as the No. 1 pick in the 2011 NBA draft.) Duke will struggle this year because it doesn’t have any backcourt depth. Irving and Barnes almost certainly would start in 2010, with Barnes probably moving to SF and transfer Seth Curry starting at SG in place of Scheyer, who graduates.

Irving is also considering Kentucky - where he’ll be for midnight madness - Georgia Tech, and Seton Hall (he’s a Jersey kid); Barnes has one-and-done written all over him and is also thinking about Kansas, UNC, and the school closest to him, Iowa State. Just how pivotal is it for Duke to land these guys?

Duke’s past five recruiting classes have produced more transfers than NBA players, more busts than All-Americans. It’s a stunning statistic — particularly when you consider that North Carolina’s past five recruiting classes have produced at least eight NBA-level players (Tyler Hansbrough, Danny Green, Brandon Wright, Wayne Ellington, Ty Lawson, Tyler Zeller, Ed Davis, John Henson). Meantime, Kansas’ past five classes have produced at least seven NBA-level players (Brandon Rush, Julian Wright, Mario Chalmers, Darrell Arthur, Sherron Collins, Cole Aldrich, Xavier Henry), and that’s why UNC and KU have consistently remained in contention for national titles.

If Irving and Barnes pass on Duke … ah, let’s not go there. [CBS Sports]
