Red Sox-Angels Open Thread: Brought to You By Kevin Youkilis
Baseball October 8th. 2009, 9:00pm
For this post, I headed over to ESPN Baahston to assess the fuss. Here’s what I gathered.
The Red Sox’ stats are impressive, but can’t compete with their unprecedented chutzpah levels. Jon “Beat Cancer” Lester has tremendous poise. Cagey scenester Dustin Pedroia is an irrepressible gamer.
The Red Sox are better at pretty much every position.
Chris Forsberg looks like a wild and crazy guy!
As for The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim California, expect wee Chone Figgins to try to run on the Red Sox.
Was it really necessary to use Nick Adenhart’s untimely death as promotional material to get people to watch the playoffs, MLB?

I think Youk had the same portrait artist as Napoleon.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
Where is the game? This Dodgers game could go late…
October 8th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

NDAMUKONG SUH!!!!!!!
October 8th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
Buck Foston … Let’s go Halos!
October 8th, 2009 at 9:28 pm
It looks like a biblical rain in Missouri tonight. Soft B12 teams have to hate playing in this shit.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Too bad he won’t get the heisman because he is by far the best college football player this year.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
It’s like SEC teams playing in sub 55 degree weather.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
It’s not the temperature…it’s the sloppy conditions. The spread passing attacks that the B12 runs does not do well in this type of weather.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
He is such a beast. He is also real big into education. He is going to wow the scouts in the NFL in the interviews and on the field.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
You have got to be fucking kidding me? Taguchi said something about Brenly calling the Cards game last night… I think that’s fine.
BUT WHY THE FUCK IS DON ORSILLO CALLING THIS GODDAMN GAME?
I hate the Red Sox even more now for this crock of absolute bullshit. This would be like Michael Kay calling the fucking Yankees game! Well, that would be worse, BUT YOU GET MY POINT!
October 8th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
thanks for the new post announcement!!!!!!!!
It’s not the temperature…it’s the sloppy conditions. The spread passing attacks that the B12 runs does not do well in this type of weather.
Crabtree will eat up that wonderful SanFran fall weather. How long before Singletary sends him for a mid-game shower?
October 8th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
It’s not too horrible for these teams because they don’t typically throw it further than 10 yards. Neb should be able to run it. It affects the Big 12 south more than the North. I think one of the bigger problems is the no huddle they all run. It’s tougher to get a dry ball on the field and the refs can’t stand there with a towel keeping it dry because they’re calling the play at the line.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
I just don’t know about him. He was so good at Tech, but I don’t know about him in the pros. I wanted to like him, but he came off like a dick after all of this. I do like the Niners and I love Singletary. I just hope they suck this week against Atlanta. That defense will Willis is scary.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
Why is NEB not running the ball on first and second down? Why run a QB keeper? Run the ball with Helu 30+ times today.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
NEB is playing like a team that just isn’t ready for prime time…again.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
I just don’t know about him. He was so good at Tech, but I don’t know about him in the pros. I wanted to like him, but he came off like a dick after all of this. I do like the Niners and I love Singletary. I just hope they suck this week against Atlanta. That defense will Willis is scary.
I feel the same way. I want Singletary to excel, but I HATE Crabtree. I couldn’t believe they drafted him in the 1st place (talent-wise, they had to, but he is NOT a Singletary-type player)
October 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
I just cannot imagine walking into a room and saying I should be paid more than a player taken 3 spots before me and actually expect to get it.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
The fact they rarely have to do this themselves almost certainly causes it to happen more often.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Not a winner? Nate Clements became a Mike Singletary player, I think Crabtree can learn.
He is from the Big XII though………..
October 8th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
when Ryan Franklin walks into any bar in St. Louis, the bartender should have this eminem line from ‘8 mile’s’ rap-off cued up …
“this guy’s a choke artist …”
October 8th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
NE is trying to give this game up. Unreal.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
and yes, even though Holiday fucked up, all he needed to get was an out
October 8th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
“this guy’s a choke artist …”
he’s been terrible for over a month. Smoltz. I wanted Smoltz.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Very true.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Hey, leave Don Orsillo out of your Boston jealousy. The man calls a good game.
October 8th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Not a winner? Nate Clements became a Mike Singletary player, I think Crabtree can learn.
SC: Toast Clements is an 8 year pro who’s gotten paid. This kid is a diva who’s done nothing. He’s coming in with a huge bullseye on him. He doesn’t seem like the type who’s going to take well to being tied up to the goalpost and paying about $40K for dinner
October 8th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Won’t dispute his abilities, Duffy. But this is beyond homerism.

Bob Brenly and Tom Verducci have been voodoo cursing my team. With Dick Stockton’s body. You heard it here first.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
this missouri qb is horrible
October 8th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Do you want my blood as well?
October 8th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
office had like 9-10 LOL moments
such a great show
October 8th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
He messed his ankle up in the first. Both QBs have looked like shit and NEB’s special teams have been abysmal.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
dwight schrute was a better closer tonight than ryan franklin
October 8th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
@tbl, what did you think of ending?
October 8th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
oops, of the Office–
October 8th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
I cant believe I have to defend Mizzou but Gabbert is pretty frickin good.

So… there’s that.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
what a lunatic. guy came in like 3 seconds late
October 8th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
pft had a link to the UFL, which is streaming online. I watched one series: JP LossMan screwed up just like he did with the Bills. That was enough for me.
They’ll be lucky to make it to Novemeber and the end of their season

October 8th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
The Office is still funny. People who say it isn’t can go f themselves in their a. the episode had a couple internet shoutouts. one was good the other was kinda lame
October 8th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
so this week was good? last week did suck.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
no UFL open thread?
October 8th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
@duder, it was funny. The Andy character makes me howl.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
I think Crabtree’s agent had more to do with the holdout than he did. He WILL become a Singletary guy because the Niners will keep winning.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
youkilis owns that scene
October 8th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Jon Lester is another of the few pitchers I’d pay money to watch. Excellent
October 8th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
no UFL open thread?
see comment #40
my last UFL comment probably ever:
The refs are dressed exactly like Tiger Woods on Sunday: red golf shirt, black pants, black cap. Very strange looking

October 8th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
I thought it was game over after that bogus check swing call on Casey Blake.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
jpq, your avatar changes are making my head spin…
v4l: my sports teams have let me down, so i pulled this out of inventory. I used it once for about 2-3 days a long time ago. I’ll probably keep it for awhile
October 8th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
They just interviewed the UFL commish and he states that he knows there are dudes at home kicking themselves for not coming to play in the league.

October 8th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
what a great episode tonight
October 8th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
suh is as advertised though. had not seen him before.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
@jpq – understood. The Stones are always appropriate.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
For what it’s worth, he’s done the Divisional Series since ‘07. If this was homerism, Eck would be his color guy.
/NESN’d
In all seriousness, seeing how badly Caray and Stockton have been, why would you complain about having to listen to Don and Buck?
October 8th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
Too bad he is being wasted by NEB’s shitty QB. NEB is about to be down 9-0.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

October 8th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffith at UFC 106. that fight will put butts in the seats.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
they review the knee down in a fucking nebraska mizzou game but not usc osu?
October 8th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

/overstated, but still true
October 8th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Always sunny and fringe deliver again.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Bob Costas, Matt Vasgerian, and others from the MLB Network are all available to call games. Have Orsillo do a game that’s NOT the Red Sox.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
yeah theres been a ton of penalties tonight
October 8th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
wow forgot that and office were on. what day is it?
October 8th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Neither Caray, Stockton, Darling, Brenly, or Martinez work for MLB Network. Why would they break stride on the case of Orsillo? Obviously, TBS and MLB Network didn’t feel the need to share talent.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
I’ve muted the tv audio and listening to the radio play-by-play with Shulman and Campbell. Slightly more balanced.
By the way, Shulman and Martinez were the shit when they used to do Jays games together.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
The fact is that a home announcer should not be announcing nationally televised playoff games*.
*Unless said broadcaster also does national games ala Vin Scully.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
What Wally said.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
And whose fault is that? That’s on TBS/MLB. You really think the Red Sox had any say in that whatsoever?
October 8th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Can some one explain why nebraska must always choke on the national stage. Shit like tonight makese think they will never be ready for the big time. They have to run the ball. I’d like to see them use Cody Green inthe second half.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
To finish my point that I started when the Dodgers so rudely interrupted by stealing game 2 (sorry taguchi)…
The Former Tribe can field an entire lineup (and not a sorry one either) made up of players in this year’s post-season:
C Martinez
1B Thome
2B Belliard
SS DeRosa (a bit of a stretch, but that’s the only one)
3B Blake
LF Manny
CF Francisco
RF Ludwick
SP Sabathia
SP Lee
RP Bettencourt
October 8th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
I think Orsillo has been really good. As long as you’re a good announcer I don’t care if you’re biased. If Michael Kay was any good Id let him do the game tomorrow.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Defensive much? Never said who’s fault it was. I also know that Bert Blyleven never would have been asked to do the Yankees/Twins series.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
could add izturis if you want
October 8th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
No. But it doesn’t change the fact that I hate them and now TBS for doing it.
Next question.
/Rosenhaus’d
//I’d let Harry Kalas call a Phillies game if he were still alive
October 8th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Apparently it’s just not my year for football. Maybe the Falcons can pull an Arizona and make the super bowl.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Defensive? No. The comments insinuate that because it’s a Red Sox announcer that is doing a Red Sox game, that’s why you have an issue with it. If it was any other (read: non-Boston) team, I can promise you that no one would bat an eyelash.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
They are a mediocre program; nothing more. I think Lee has proven that he is just not the guy. Green has already played so it’s not like a redshirt is in the cards. Get him out there and see what he can do. Lee just doesn’t have it.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:05 pm
What would Yankee and Red Sox fans do if they couldn’t pull the ‘you all hate us’ card every time someone says something remotely critical of their team? It’s amazing that they can soldier on in the face of such persecution.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
ironically this usually leads to everyone hating them
October 8th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
If Hawk Harrelson were calling a White Sox postseason game, people would be writing letters, making phone calls and sending pipe bombs to TBS for making them endure it. Same if Len Kasper did a Cubs game, Caray did a Braves game, Duane Kiper did a Giants game or any other home commentator did a NATIONALLY TELEVISED POSTSEASON GAME.
It’s dumb. It shows favor. It’s completely avoidable. And, it’s TBS’s fault. Duffy is the only Carmine fan allowed to been an arbiter from the soap box.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
First, you didn’t say anything critical against the team. You seem to have an issue that TBS/MLB tapped the Red Sox play-by-play announcer to call their games. That is their issue. It has nothing to do with the Red Sox. I will guarantee you that if any of the other playoff teams had one of their announcers calling games, that no one on this site would care. You’d be naive to ignore the anti-Boston bias on this site.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
I can honestly tell you, I really don’t give a shit who calls any games. I’m upset we can land a man on the moon and give audrina nice fake tits, but we can’t create 29 vin scully clones. We are a failure as a society if you ask me.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
Christ. The AGONY of being a Red Sawk fan.
Give it a rest. This site is wayyyyyyy better than that. Teams, networks, media types, and others get roasted here on a daily basis for things less egregious than having a hometown announcer do play by play for a playoff game…
October 8th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
That’s cause he’s terrible.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
You’d be naive to ignore the anti-Boston bias on this site.
There’s an anti-everything bias on this site. Everybody who likes something is sure that this site is biased against it, all the time.
Jets bias, Boston Bias, the U bias, Ohio Bias, etc, etc, etc. Everybody bitches. Everybody’s right.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
C’mon. If it’s not a Red Sox site, then there’s anti-Boston bias. No one outside of New England actually likes the Red Sox.
Are they? I probably missed the boat on that one but I always thought they were real and spectacular?
October 8th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
I forgot the Len Bias Bias.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
Ok. I take it all back. Listening to Don express “joy” or “excitement” on an Angels 3 run blast there makes me feel better as someone who despises the Red Sox.
Carry on.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
Damn it SC, I’m trying to make a point here. Save important discussions such as Audrina’s bewbs for when the Yankees are blowing out the twins tomorrow.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
Pretty sure you started the discussion about Orsillo. If, as you say, there are “Teams, networks, media types, and others get roasted here on a daily basis for things less egregious than having a hometown announcer do play by play for a playoff game…”, it shouldn’t be a big deal, right?
October 8th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
That was a stereotypical Orsillo call. If you sub in Sox players instead of Angels players. Anyone else want to say he’s not objective?
October 8th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
they should let tommy heinsohn call the game
October 8th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
Every ball a foot of the plate would be a strike. And if it wasn’t called, we’d be subjected to 3 minutes of why it should have been a strike.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
nebraska should have 6 or 7 INTs
October 8th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
Seriously, those are some athletic linemen.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:37 pm
Atta boy Big John!
October 8th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
These pretzels are makin’ me thirsty.
October 8th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
Anyone disagree that both of those calls at first should have gone Boston’s way?
October 8th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
about time for a gabbert pick 6
October 8th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
haha close enough
October 8th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Nope but paybacks a bitch
October 8th, 2009 at 11:48 pm
you have got to be fucking kidding me
October 8th, 2009 at 11:48 pm
amazing that the mizzou coach would even attempt to throw with that qb
October 8th, 2009 at 11:50 pm
No. And Tito should have gotten tossed.
Turn up your sarcasm detector. Where’s JPQ when I need a good “know your role, rookie” type line? And what is this objectivity you speak of?
October 8th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
this is gonna be an easy cover for nebraska
October 8th, 2009 at 11:52 pm
Lackey is dealin’
October 8th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
Worse call at 1st. C.B. Bucknor is the worst umpire in the game
October 8th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
worst qb ever
October 9th, 2009 at 12:01 am
Lackey is always money in the playoffs … It’s always been the offensive thats been worrisome
October 9th, 2009 at 12:06 am
wtf? I watch less than a period of the Jackets/Sharks game and Nebraska has thrown up 20?
October 9th, 2009 at 12:50 am
so Bob Brenly was still okay? right?
